West Coast Berbice (WCB), Region Five (Mahaica-Berbice) labourer is now dead after he and his son were beaten by a group of persons from their village on Saturday night.

According to the young man, the suspects told him that his father had stolen silver and gold chains, along with eight silver rings and that he must face the consequence.

The teenager told Guyana Times that he was on his way to his sister’s home when he was confronted by the group of men. They subsequently started dealing him several lashes to his head, face and back.

during his attack. He said during the beating, he recognised two of his attackers, and called out to them for mercy, but to no avail.

“They chain me down and then beat me with cutlass and I call two person name so that could ease off beating me.”

At the simplest chance of escape, Persaud made a run for his life, and ended up at his teenage sister, who contacted her father.

After receiving news of his son’s attack, Evans rushed to the scene with his son, and began enquiring about what had occurred. It was then the suspects turned their attention to him.

The teenager said his father was asked about the whereabouts of the jewellery and he responded by saying he knew nothing of it.

“They start beating he and beating me and blood start falling out from my head and they bus up my father face.

They throw water on we and beat we again,” the teenager recounted.

According to him, during the ordeal which lasted for more than 30 minutes, his father continued to deny knowledge of the missing jewellery.

see,” the teenager added.

In fear, the teen started to scream which alerted persons in the area.

A few minutes later, Evans became motionless, and his son was told to collect his father and take him home.

The young man said he suggested that he be allowed to go and get help to remove his father but his request was denied.

Police said that the victim was wrapped in a rice sack and placed 300 feet into another street on a grass parapet.

He was later taken to the Fort Wellington Hospital

where he succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment.

The body remains at the Fort Wellington Hospital mortuary, awaiting a post-mortem examination.

Meanwhile, two suspects, aged 23 and 27, were arrested and placed in custody pending investigation. Up to press time on Sunday, checks were being made for the other suspects.

Evans was only released from prison in May of this year after being indicted for a 2015 murder. He is the second of eight siblings to have been murdered. (G4)

Ex-soldier who beheaded uncle appeals life sentence

wayne Tappin, 30, the ex-soldier who was found guilty of beheading his uncle, has filed an appeal against his conviction for murder and life sentence at the Guyana Court of Appeal.

In 2019, Tappin was found guilty by a jury of the August 6, 2017 murder of his 51-yearold uncle Randolph Seenauth.

Justice Sandil Kissoon sentenced him to life and set his eligibility for parole at 40 years.

It was reported that on the day in question, Seenauth’s head was found lying between the living room and kitchen of his Better Hope, East Coast Demerara (ECD) house. His body was later found in the bedroom. The gruesome discovery was made after Police ranks were summoned to the scene by neighbours who heard a loud commotion in the man’s home which he shared with his nephew.

During a sentencing hearing for Tappin, the now dead man was described as a very joyful and hardworking individual. The court heard that the two men would normally fight, especially when they were both drunk. Seenauth, despite suffering from epilepsy, did odd jobs around his neighbourhood to sustain himself. A probation report

noted that Tappin, who was not academically inclined, left school in the tenth grade.

Thereafter, he held several jobs before enlisting in the Guyana Defence Force (GDF).

Up to the time he murdered his uncle, Tappin did farming. In sentencing the convict, Justice Kissoon considered the fact that he professed his innocence even after he was found guilty by a jury of his peers and gave a confession statement to the Police. The Judge ordered that the convict be exposed to programmes that will aid in his rehabilitation. (G1)

ExxonMobil will step up financially in case of oil spill – Project Manager …says mitigation measures make oil spill unlikely

revailing concerns have been expressed during oil giant ExxonMobil’s scoping meetings as to what will transpire in the event of an oil spill and according to the oil company, they are willing to step up to the plate and meet the financial cost in that event.

ExxonMobil recently held a public disclosure meeting for the Yellowtail project, which they are looking to start up in 2025. The meeting, a virtual one, was hosted by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and discussions centred on the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for the project.

During his presentation, Esso Exploration and Production Guyana Limited (EEPGL) Project Manager Steve Laws acknowledged the concerns Guyanese have about oil spills, in particular the financial repercussions on the country. He assured, however, that Exxon would take care of its fiduciary responsibility.

“Our first priority with all parties is to put in place the mitigation. What we showed in the modelling, if something was to happen, that’s unlikely.

Now if something did happen, we’d take that responsibility and pay the cost in that event.

We have the financial capacity to meet that responsibility… [both] under Guyanese law and the petroleum agreement as well for the Stabroek Block,” he explained.

Laws went on to note that insurance is only one source of financing that can be used, noting that it will not prevent or delay a response to an oil spill. According to him, the purpose of insurance is really to recover any costs after the fact.

“We do have insurance for those sorts of issues. But as I said we have the capacity and responsibility to pay the cost for any incident. And we are here for the long term.

So, it is in our interest and the Government’s interest to tackle any incidents that do occur.”

Meanwhile Anna Sunby, who was one of the Environmental Resource Management (ERM) consultants that participated during the call, explained that Exxon is focused on keeping its mitigation measures as transparent as possible.

“In terms of mitigation, we’re really focusing here on transparency, sharing information and having that continued engagement both around the project activities in general and around oil spills response programmes and the measures that will be in place for emergency preparedness and response. Including also the fishing communities along the coast,” she said.

Todd Hall, another member of the ERM consultants present during the meeting, added that the EIA Exxon submitted contains details about the mitigation measures Exxon will pursue in the event of an oil spill.

“The EIA has got an oil spill response plan provided with it. It has all the processes and procedures that will be implemented. There are a

number of tools that would be used to respond to the spill.

Some of the comments we would see during scoping were related to compensation for losses that occur during the oil spill. The EIA does have a claims and liability mediation discussion in it, which addresses that compensation.

Additionally, EEPGL and its partners do maintain insurance coverage, which includes coverage for liability.”

ExxonMobil has said it anticipates at least six projects offshore Guyana will be online by 2027, with developmental drilling recently starting on the second one, the Liza Phase 2 project. Back in May 2019, EEPGL was granted approval by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to go ahead with its Liza Phase 2 Development offshore Guyana.

The oil company had said that the project will have the capacity to produce 220,000 barrels of oil per day. Exxon had also revealed that the Liza Phase 2 development

was funded at the cost of some US$6 billion, including a lease capitalisation cost of approximately $1.6 billion, for the Liza Utility FPSO vessel. For the Phase 2 Development, six drill centres were planned, along with approximately 30 wells – 15 productions, nine water injection and six gas injection wells.

The US$9 billion Payara development, the third development, will meanwhile target an estimated resource base of

about 600 million oil-equivalent barrels and was at one point considered to be the largest single planned investment in the history of Guyana.

The Yellowtail development, which will be oil giant ExxonMobil’s fourth development in Guyana’s waters, will turn out to be the single largest development so far in terms of barrels per day (bpd) of oil, with a mammoth 250,000 bpd targeted. (G3)

Climate change commitments

T

he Glasgow 26th Conference of Parties – COP 26 – of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCC) to achieve the goal of its predecessor Paris Accord of 2015 – to have the countries of the world agree to take actions that would limit global warming to 1.5°C above preindustrial levels – ended last Saturday, one day past its deadline. But even with the frenetic last-minute efforts to achieve its goal, we have to concede that it ended in failure. This does not mean that there were no positives, but that global warming will not be headed off and we should, therefore, expect a continuation of rising sea levels and violent weather patterns that have now become the new and dangerous norm.

Unlike some past COPs, there were no serious reservations expressed about climate change not being pushed by human activity – especially from fossil fuels usage that produce CO2.

But the fly in the ointment was expressed candidly by India’s representative to COP26 Bhupender Yadav: “How can anyone expect that developing countries can make promises about phasing out coal and fossil fuel subsidies when developing countries have still to deal with their development agendas and poverty eradication?” On the last day, he insisted and received acceptance through support from most other developing nations like Nigeria, that the target on the use of coal – the “dirtiest” but cheapest fossil fuel – be “phasedown of unabated coal and inefficient fossil fuel subsidies” rather than “phase-out”.

The finessing of the target signals the fundamental dilemma facing all countries: how to balance collective versus individual needs. This dilemma always creates the “free rider” problem: each person will try to benefit from the public good without paying for it. In the instance of global warming, the problem is further exacerbated because it was created mostly by the rich counties of the world over the past two centuries through their use of fossil fuels. The rest of the world that want to improve their citizens’ standard of living find it difficult to accept the false equivalence in present carbon emissions and view it as stymieing their development.

One answer would be for the developed countries to accept their inordinate contribution to global warming and to make contributions commensurate with that contribution, but this has been rejected. They argue disingenuously that while the world should pivot away from fossil fuels, this should not hinder their development since they can utilise “renewable” or “green” sources of energy. These include hydroelectric, wind, solar and geothermal power. While these efforts are being intensified by large polluters like India and China, the latter argue - as articulated by India’s Yadav - that the phasing out must be extended from the original COP25 targets.

In the meantime, there was early agreement on the need to incentivise deforestation and this will definitely impact Guyana positively since we are part of the Amazon ecosystem that forms the largest forest system that acts to sequester carbon. Trees and plants – like all living things – are mostly made up of carbon compounds. As with the Norway Agreement crafted in 2009, countries or companies that are net emitters of carbon can pay countries like Guyana not to cut down their forests to continue acting as “carbon sinks”. While there have been concerns expressed as to the mechanisms for this arrangement to work, Guyana can also be paid for advising other countries since we now have a vast reservoir of knowledge in this area. This is especially true for the insistence that Indigenous Peoples, who live in these forests and are as such their “guardians”, benefit from the “carbon credits”. Another positive development was the strengthening of the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS), to lobby for assistance on measures to mitigate rising sea levels.

Alok Sharma, President of COP26, summarised its deliberations: “We can now say with credibility that we have kept 1.5 degrees alive. But its pulse is weak and it will only survive if we keep our promises and translate commitments into rapid action.”

It’s time to end the pandemic emergency at the border

resident Biden took office pledging to rescind the Trump administration’s deliberately harsh policies toward migrants who show up at America’s doorstep. But as Mr. Biden’s first year in office draws to a close, his administration continues to lean heavily on one of those policies: Title 42, an emergency public health order that allows the government to turn away migrants at the nation’s borders during a pandemic.

The Biden administration says that border patrol agents are simply following orders from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that were put in place to keep the country safe from Covid-19. But there is little doubt that the administration has used the policy as a stopgap measure to quickly remove migrants who are gathering at the southern border in large numbers, pushed by the economic fallout from Covid in South and Central America and pulled by the rumors of lenient treatment under a more welcoming American president, among other factors.

On Friday, congressional investigators released excerpts from testimony by a former senior C.D.C. official who admitted that

there was little public health rationale for instituting the policy, since the virus was already spreading in the United States by the time the Title 42 order was signed.

Border control agents have had close to two million encounters with migrants at the border so far in 2021, nearly twice as many as in 2019 and almost four times as many as in 2018. More than a million of this year’s encounters ended with migrants being deported or turned away under Title 42.

Although the Biden administration has carved out some humanitarian exceptions to Title 42 — unaccompanied children, for instance — its continued defense of the policy has horrified activists, international agencies and even some officials serving in the administration.

Two left their posts in recent months after making scathing critiques. That’s because the use of Title 42 essentially makes it impossible for migrants who fear for their lives to claim asylum even at ports of entry and returns many to squalid camps in Mexico where they are vulnerable to violence and threats from smugglers and cartels.

Under U.S. law, anyone who sets foot on American soil is entitled to express a fear of violence and perse-

cution in their home country, setting off a process that can take years to resolve in backlogged courts.

Title 42 short-circuits that process and allows for immediate removal.

Meanwhile, many people in the Department of Homeland Security are frustrated that a large number of migrants who are caught sneaking across the border are simply sent back to Mexico, where they regroup and try their luck another day.

Both the Trump administration and the Biden administration used Title 42 to quickly expel unlawful border crossers instead of arresting and prosecuting them. Under the policy, there’s little cost to trying to sneak across again and again. As many as half of single adults expelled under Title 42 try to cross the border unlawfully again.

That’s one reason the number of encounters has been so high.

Still, many border agents consider Title 42 a powerful tool to control the unusually high number of people trying to cross the border unlawfully, and they are not eager to relinquish it.

The result has been the worst of both worlds. The Biden administration finds itself under fire from both the left and the right for its handling of migrants at the

border. The chorus of criticism reached new heights in September, when images surfaced of more than 10,000 Haitians camping under a bridge in Del Rio, Texas, and getting chased by border patrol agents on horseback. Polls suggest that the Biden administration is particularly mistrusted on immigration, with one showing that 34 percent of Democrats and 73 percent of independents disapprove of how the southern border has been handled.

What is broken at the border didn’t break in the past few months. It has been broken for years. It will take time — and help from Congress — to fix.

But the administration must work harder to turn a system that is too often chaotic, arbitrary and even deadly into one that is more orderly and fair.

The American people want a secure border where people enter lawfully, where criminals are arrested and where people who are in genuine fear for their lives are afforded a chance to apply for asylum. Dear Editor, Guyana received its independence since 1966, and one would have hoped that concerns about racial insecurity would have dissipated over the years, but they have not. Two political parties, the PPP and the PNC, have been in Government since then, and it is for another article to discuss this failure and aberration in our society.

Guyana had its elections in March 2020, and it was only in August 2021 that the results were finally announced by the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM).

We are all aware that this inexcusable delay was as a result of the numerous court matters that were filed and had to be determined.

GECOM, whose responsibility was to prepare, conduct and announce the results, must take a major share of blame for the fiasco that followed after the polls were closed. It is my humble view that the root cause must lie as a result of the composition of the members of the Commission, and this needs to be changed in order to avert any future recurrence of the events of March 2, 2020. The members of the Guyana Elections Commission comprise the Chairperson and

six members. Three of the six members are appointed by the Government, and the remaining three by the majority Opposition Party in Parliament. The Chairperson is appointed by the President of Guyana, with the concurrence of the Leader of the Opposition.

The members of the Commission should be objective in the performance of their duties, and have the best interests of Guyana and the ensuring of elections that are free and fair. Have they been loyal to the oath they swore and to ensure that they are objective?

Have they, when acting as GECOM Commissioners, cast aside their respective party loyalties? Have they been able to satisfy the electorate that their decisions were fair, and that the electorate can have confidence in the electoral process and the results?

You decide. Perspective is so important!

What had occurred is that the Commission is divided along party lines, with the Governmentappointed members on one side and the Oppositionappointed members on the other side. It was left to the Chairperson, on the crucial matters, to cast the deciding vote. When this occurred, according to the matter decided, the

members of the public who supported the side that had the vote in their favour were elated. The other half was not, and questioned the impartiality of the Chairperson, Madam Justice (retd) Claudette Singh.

GECOM now has another important task to conduct, and that is the appointment of the Chief Elections Officer and several other important positions in the machinery, for the conduct of elections in Guyana. If it fails in this duty, and appoints persons who do not portray objectivity, or those who have a political party loyalty or can be perceived to have such loyalty, or are not competent for the respective positions, then this will be a further blow to our democracy, and the acceptance of future elections’ results may also be questioned.

It is imperative for the respective political parties to understand that it would be in their interest and the greater good of Guyana for us to have a GECOM which we can feel and believe is objective and fair. If this is achieved, they can be at ease that no mumbo-jumbo, or abracadabra, or incorrect addition will be sprung on them in the future.

We/Guyana have too

much to lose now with the wealth that we have and will get from the oil and gas sector. I call upon the GECOM Commissioners to cast aside their political loyalties and show to the citizens of Guyana and the world that they have the will and determination to appoint persons who can have the confidence of all the electorate. The respective political parties must inform their appointed members that they also expect this perspective from the persons whom they have appointed.

But, in my heart, it is hard to see them doing this, and perhaps we are all to blame, as we have to a great extent remained silent and not championed our desire to see fair play, objectivity, and the banishment of race in our society and elections.

GECOM has to show us that the process in the appointments will be fair and acceptable. It has to inform us how it would achieve this, and we should accept nothing less. I do hope that all the appointments would not be by the Chairperson casting her majority vote, as that would not be comforting or acceptable to me. Perhaps you too, also!

Renewable and clean energy will play a pivotal role in fostering economic growth, energy security, job creation, and poverty alleviation in a cost-effective manner while contributing to climate change mitigation in Kwakwani sub–Region Two. Our Government’s comprehensive, clean energy plan to guide our transition to sustainable energy generation. A plan that will enable us to receive renewable and reliable energy at a reduced cost for households, industries and

hinterland communities.

It will remove our dependence on imported fossil fuels; it will result in foreign exchange savings and it will insulate our economy from the impact of rising petroleum prices As more and more communities and utility companies like Kwakwani Utilities Inc adopt to “solar farms” the community solar industry will blossom from a few innovative “pilot” projects into full-fledged countrywide programmes across the country. Now, several of community solar projects are operational or in development, supported by hinterland electrification company and the office. The office of the Prime Minister mandated the Government of Guyana to consistently deliver the benefits of solar and other renewable energy projects to individuals and communities.

During a recent meet the community, we quickly learned how much con-

sumer demand there was to support renewable energy. At the same time, many of the same people who actively supported solar did not know where to begin the process themselves. This is especially true if they were in the vast majority of consumers who could not “go solar” themselves with a rooftop system.

Rooftop solar is a great option for the people that can utilise it, but many residents and businesses cannot. Community PV solar farm serves anyone who cannot benefit from rooftop solar, making it a great option for renters, apartment dwellers, homeowners, or businesses without the right kind of roof.

Kwakwani resident and investors will receive a big boost in electricity supply with the construction of a photovoltaic solar farm, here in sub-Region 2.

One of the biggest challenges in Kwakwani still remains the sourcing and

availability of fuel and the overall cost to always have fuel readily available. With solar energy, this will definitely cut cost for our Government, since electricity in Kwakwani is subsidised and residents do not pay for it. However, with this photovoltaic solar farm in place, Government subsidies will continue but if a payment system will ever be enacted, it will be on par with the cost of electricity in Linden.

This is not first time the People’s Progressive Party/ Civic Government will be investing millions into improving the electricity supply at Kwakwani; the construction of a modern solar farm in Kwakwani sub-Region 2 will be a welcoming investment made by the PPP/C Government that will further enhance Kwakwani Utilities Inc electrification expansion project in Kwakwani and the Berbice River.

violent criminals

Dear Editor, I would like us to focus our attention on a recent video post in which the Police were confronted with a violent criminal as they attempted to make an arrest.

In that video, we see two lawmen engaging in a violent struggle with a belligerent individual. In the ensuing fracas, they were met with some stout resistance; in fact, the lawmen were physically assaulted, being punched and tossed around as the criminal gained the upper hand.

This caused one Facebook commentator to ask why the officer who was armed didn’t use his weapon. Why didn’t he use his weapon, a common practice used here when subduing belligerent offenders? However, in this instance, the officer chose not to resort to his weapon because he probably was cognisant of the legal and political repercussions he would have had to face.

But the question still lingers: Why suffer bodily harm by a criminal? Should an officer rather suffer blows and humiliation than react with subduing force?

Well, the lawmen chose the passive role in this case, which was a welcome spectacle to a crowd who gloated in the idea of an officer being beaten by a criminal.

And this has been a problem facing law enforcement ever since: how to react in such demanding circumstances?

Now, this brings into question how well our law-

men are equipped to deal with violent criminals. Are they well trained, or properly equipped to deal with such situations? I think not.

Some may say the Policemen should have shot the criminal - a move that could have caused him irreparable harm. we are all too familiar with these situations.

So, let us see what is the most sensible and proper way we can deal with violent persons when making an arrest.

It is my firm belief that the Police should be equipped with tasers. That device would have brought a quick and tactical end to that violent confrontation.

A quick application of some electrical power would have immobilised the criminal and put everything in order.

If I should add, there are instances when the Police, in their bid to make an arrest, were met by a hostile crowd gathered at the scene; for instance, the mob that became active participants in the obstruction of justice, pulling and tugging, even throwing in punches to defend their criminal comrade. This sort of behaviour must be curbed immediately if we are to make any headway in crimefighting. So, I am again making the suggestion that the Minister get our lawmen properly equipped with tasers to adequately deal with such situations.

How it works[JD1]: The oil floats on top of the water because it is less dense or lighter than water. The food colouring has the same density as the water so it sink through the oil and mixes with the water. When you add the tablet, it sinks to the bottom then starts to dissolve. As it dissolves it release a gas, carbon dioxide. The gas is lighter than water so it floats to the top as air bubbles. The air bubbles bring some coloured water with them to the top. When the air comes out of the coloured water blob, the water gets heavy again and sinks. It does this over and over again until the tablet is completely dissolved.

ith the race for the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) leadership on, candidate Dr Richard Van West-Charles on Saturday officially launched his campaign in Linden, Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Berbice), where he told supporters that this is now the time to rebuild the party and ultimately work towards a better Guyana.

Van West-Charles’ campaign launch came one day after the PNCR held its Nomination’s Day activity ahead of its 21st Biennial Congress slated for December 11, 2021. He will be running against Opposition Leader

Joseph Harmon and PNCR Executive Aubrey Norton, who is leading the race, to become the party’s new leader. Incumbent leader, former President David Granger, is not running for a third term and was not nominated to return to the post.

During his campaign launch, Dr Van WestCharles, who is the sonin-law of founding leader of PNC – Linden Forbes Burnham, told supporters that the party is a political machinery has the power to achieve a better Guyana for all. He noted that the PNCR had done this before and can do it again but only if it is in “safe hands” with him at its helm.

“Comrades, this is a task for all of us. I cannot do it alone and neither can you.

But together, yes! We can.

This is our moment; our time and we must do what we must. The future of our party is at stake, the future of our members and supporters is at stake and so is the future of our beloved country,” he stated.

We must fight for change and fight to rebuild the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) as a potent political force capable of taking on the tasks we have identified pertinent to our peace, stability and growth as a nation,” he stressed.

If given the opportunity to serve the party, Dr Van West-Charles, who headed the Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) under the previous APNU/AFC coalition regime, said he will bring the renewed vigour and spirit to move in a man-

ner not seen in the recent past. He added that under his leadership, there will be a level of organisation which will make the PNCR one of the most organised forces in the country.

Inclusionary politics

He went on to outline the importance of inclusionary politics not only within the party and the need to address ethnic insecurities. All this, the candidate pointed, must be done with peace.

“Our leadership must be seen in the vineyard working with our comrades to have them emerge out of the grassroots environment where their elderly and children have a better quality of life, where their youth can have new vistas and hope to open new doors to the creation of wealth. Our leadership must be ethical in its operation at all lev-

els with respect for all even when we differ. Differences of views and opinions must not breathe hate but respect for alternative views, perhaps different thought processes and intellectual competence, and maybe opportunities for teaching and/ or learning,” he stated.

Moreover, Dr Van WestCharles further posited that as the campaign moves closer to the December Congress, no stone should be left unturned in meeting party supporters, especially at the grassroot, to explain how each member will be involved and according to him, no attempt should be made by anyone to interrupt this process in the coming weeks.

Only last month, Van West-Charles had called for PNCR General Secretary Amna Ally to recuse herself from the post to allow for transparency and account-

ability in the election process. He had also alleged there were efforts by some to sway the PNCR membership to vote in a particular manner. At Friday’s Nomination Day process, he told reporters that “The party has to focus on development and development at all levels… I am speaking about how the groups are reorganised in the first place to show leadership and development in communities where the groups exist. That comes back to reorganisation of the secretariat and the party as a whole.”

Nevertheless, he committed to working with all party members who are elected via a democratic process.

At his campaign launch, Dr Van West-Charles was endorsed by several PNCR members including prominent leaders in Linden, former Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Berbice) Chairman Sharma Solomon and former parliamentarian Vanessa Kissoon.

The PNCR – the leading party in the A Partnership for National Unity faction of the APNU/AFC coalition Opposition – has been embroiled in an internal divisive power struggle since the party’s loss at the 2020 General and Regional Elections.

Hence, there was mounting pressure for congress to be held to elect new leadership. (G8)

“My passion for law stemmed from the injustices I’ve seen”– new attorney

T

he injustices in the world bothered her since childhood and she always looked at ways to help the people around her and make a difference.

For 24-year-old Merisa Johnson, it was her calling to pursue a career in law.

After all, to her, the law is the bedrock of society that maintains order.

After completing her Legal Education Certificate (LEC) at the Hugh Wooding Law School (HWLS) this year, Johnson was admitted to practice law in, and before the courts of Guyana last Wednesday. Her petition was presented by lawyer Beulah Williams before Justice Jo Ann Barlow at the Victoria Law Courts.

Johnson is a former student of the Christ Church Secondary School where she attained 10 passes at the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC). She obtained eight passes at the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE) after completing sixth form classes at the St Joseph High School.

From 2016-2019, she completed a Bachelor of Laws (Distinction) at the University of Guyana (UG).

Having placed sixth in her class, she gained automatic entry to the law school in Trinidad. In presenting her petition to practice, Williams described Johnson as being a very determined and studious young woman.

Johnson told the court that law was not always her first choice since she had been placed in the business stream and had developed a love for accounting.

She, however, said that after writing CSEC, her parents advised her to register for sixth form in order to kick start a career in the legal profession.

While attending St Joseph High School, she confessed that it was her CAPE law teacher who made her fall in love with the subject. But it was not only that; an issue in her neighbourhood further sparked her interest in this field. She recounted that there was a problem in her community about a coconut tree that was hanging very low in another neighbour’s yard.

“I recalled trying to be a mediator between the neighbours in order to re-

solve the issue since I had already been enrolled in the law programme at UG and had knowledge of nuisance and abatement,” she said.

Unfortunately, she was not able to make peace because the owner of the coconut tree was reluctant to cut it or have the neighbour in whose yard it was hanging, cut it.

According to Johnson, she saw this as an injustice since at any moment a coconut could have fallen and hit someone. “This made me realise that justice can only be done if persons are aware of their rights and the law.” This experience made her work even harder to be among the top 25 in her LLB class.

While the new lawyer expressed that she is truly humbled and blessed to be part of this noble profession, she said that her journey to the Bar was no walk in the park.

She shared, “There were many challenges and hurdles to cross along the way.

There were many sacrifices and doubts about whether I had chosen the right profession. Through it all, God has been ever so faithful.

Indeed, with hard work, determination, and faith in yourself, and faith in God success is inevitable.”

Johnson credited her success to her family and friends. Their unwavering love and support, she added, brought her through, not only as the latest admission to the Bar but as the very first lawyer in her

immediate family.

The young lady related that at one point, she was unsure if she would be able to attend HWLS due to her family’s financial constraints. But when all seemed lost, she related that her mother reminded her that “God did not bring you this far to leave you; he will make a way.”

Honour, integrity, and humility

She vowed to wear her robe with honour, integrity, and humility and perform her duties to the best of her abilities. “I endeavour to be respectful to the court, my colleagues, and clients. I endeavour to always uphold the high standards of the profession, the rule of law and to always remember the code of ethics.”

“Since my passion for the law stemmed from the injustices I’ve seen over the years, I wanted to make a difference. So, I will ensure that justice is not only done but seemed to be done,” she said while adding that after a much-needed break, she intends to pursue an LLM to contribute meaningfully to the region’s jurisprudence.

For her part, Justice Barlow told Johnson that the practice of the law has become a very popular profession. “There are many of you, so the task is yours to so distinguish yourself so that you can rise above the others. I am not saying to you that you are better than anyone else, we are all equal.”

“But in our equalness,” Justice Barlow advised the new lawyer that she owes it to herself and to those she represents to present herself in such a way that those who look on, leave not with some sense of distaste or disgust but be able to convey to others a positive word.

“As you seek to represent your clients, you bear in your mind your duty to them and you keep foremost in your mind your duty to the court. If your client comes to you with an unmeritorious case, feel comfortable telling them, that you will not bring it to the court. Not only because it will make you look bad but because it wastes precious judicial time,” said the High Court Judge to Johnson.

Besides that, the Judge reminded her that she is joining the profession when the COVID-19 pandemic and all its dangers have forced the courts to resort to blended hearings (virtual and in-person). She, therefore, urged Johnson to present her best self, whether she appears in-person or virtually.

“Whatever you do, it must not be something that receives from counsel opposite a negative comment, and worst from the court, a negative comment. Let not your absence from the four walls of the court make you feel that you can so relax yourself that you no longer present as an attorney,” the Justice added.

Justice Barlow told the young lawyer, “Only you can determine what type of lawyer you will be perceived by your colleagues and by the court”. She informed Johnson that she is new to the profession, and in every court, she may have to earn the respect of that court. But this, the Judge noted, is easy as she went on to give the young lawyer some guidance.

“When you come to the court, prepare, when you come to the court appearing as if you know your client’s case from cover to cover, you earn the respect of the court win or lose.” In charging Johnson to reach for the stars, she said to her, “Whatever path we choose to take there is room for us to rise above the others”. Looking back with anger…

…at EXXON audit he PPP’s being hauled over the coals – that’ve been set alight, even! – for not auditing the US$9 billion Exxon claims it spent on developing the Stabroek Block up to now. Now, of course, this should never have happened. Which Guyanese would accept his carpenter’s figures on how much it cost him to buy materials to build their house?? And when it comes to padding bills, Guyanese carpenters – no slouches at this game – could learn more than a thing or a hundred from all companies that extract resources from Third World Countries!! The “extracted resources” don’t all come out of the ground!!

But we gotta be fair in this finger pointing. Exxon and its partners –- remember Hess and CNOOC? – have been piling up those expenses since 2015. Not so coincidentally, that’s the exact point in time when the PNC coalition slid into office! Don’t we remember the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) saying that it’ll be building its capacity to conduct just such an audit??

Didn’t the PNC Government – through the now very loquacious Winston Jordan –- also say they’d be facilitating such capacity building? Might’ve been locking the stable door after the horse had bolted through the efforts of the now invisible Raphael Trotman! – but what the heck?? A principle is a principle, no?

No! At least not to TIGI – in the form of its head Fred Collins - -who came out swinging after he returned from COP26. Must’ve been miffed at how the developing world was steamrolled by the big and bad (and rich) “developed world”! But why take it out on the PPP when he knew fully well that the PNC sat on their haunches for five years on developing our auditing capacity! Shouldn’t they) and their lapse) have at least been mentioned?

Why doubt VP Jagdeo’s answer that - -being in office for less than a year and a half – the job just couldn’t be done!! Did Collins hear about the folk wisdom, “Wha’ rain na full dew cyaan full”? Or “Yuh cyaan buil’ latrine when you gat fuh sh*t”? Well, Collins had an answer for that! How come the PPP didn’t ask some local accounting types to hook up with some furriners to do the job!?

Sounds reasonable. But does he remember the last time the PPP tried that to fulfil their campaign promise to “review” the Trotman oil contract? Not having the capacity, the Government went for a Canadian who’d been involved with contract negotiation in oil-rich Alberta.

And does he remember the furore that was caused by this move? The woman’s past was dredged up and she was pretty much accused of being a fake and a thief!

The PPP just can’t win!! …at Burnham and 303 Committee Other daily ran a piece on how the PNC plotted to rig the elections back in 1968 and 1973 – while being aided and abetted by the Americans via their omnipresent CIA! The Cold War was very hot!! The funding was provided by a “303 Committee” that kept careful notes of who got the money – US$5000 – and when. While US$5000 might now seem small – Burnham had asked for US$10,000 – it went a long way back in the day. And then again, Guyanese always came cheap!!

But all this is old hat, isn’t it? Apart from a few hardliners in the APNU – like David Granger – few would demur. But why would the daily reveal this just when the PNC’re insisting they’re the most democratic party around – by publicly electing their new leader?

Is it because Burnham never did build a proper party structure and just ferreted away the money?

So, the new guard will have to start all over again?

Like poor Sisyphus!!? …at COP 26 How much can we poor natives take? Our erstwhile colonial masters expect us to keep fetching them on our shoulders, even though the water’s up to our necks from their profligacy?

Enough! Let’s drown together!!

“We are forever indebted for supreme sacrifice of veterans for peace and freedom” – President Ali C

ommander-in-Chief, President Dr Irfaan Ali on Sunday paid homage to the sacrifice made by the men and women who laid their lives down in service to the Commonwealth during the two World Wars in order to ensure peace and freedom around the world.

The Head of State attended the Remembrance Day wreath-laying ceremony at the War Memorial Cenotaph Monument in Georgetown. He noted that this Sunday of Remembrance, an annual commemoration, is in honour of those men and women of the armed forces whose sacrifices will never be forgotten.

“We are forever indebted to them for their supreme sacrifice in the cause of peace and freedom,” he posited.

According to President Ali, this day is also to recall, with gratitude, those who have made personal sacrifices in their struggle for human dignity, social justice and freedom from all oppression through the years.

The Head of State added that their examples should strengthen everyone’s resolve to maintain efforts for a world at peace with justice and prosperity for all its people.

“On this solemn occasion, we, the citizens of the Co-operative Republic of Guyana, rededicate ourselves to the search for

peace everywhere and renew our commitment to the development and well-being of our beloved country,” the Commander-in-Chief stated.

President Ali led the charge in laying the wreath at the War Memorial on Sunday, followed by Prime Minister Phillips, COS Bess, GVL’s representative and diplomats.

Remembrance Sunday is commemorated on the second Sunday of November.

Remembrance Day, or Poppy Day, is observed on November 11 annually by Commonwealth countries to honour those who died in the Wars. British Guianese soldiers served and fought in Egypt, France, Belgium, and East Africa.

Remembrance Day or “Poppy Day” is observed each year on the second Sunday in November to pay tribute to the fallen soldiers from the two World Wars (1914-1918 and 19391945).

However, this occasion is commemorated on November 11 annually by Commonwealth countries around the world to honour those who died in the wars There are currently less than 10 surviving World War veterans in Guyana including a centenarian.

resident of the Upper Corentyne Chamber of Commerce Krishnand Jaichand is calling on the Police in Region Six (East BerbiceCorentyne) to take a more proactive approach to prevent persons from illegally entering Guyana from the Corentyne River which borders Suriname.

He made the call on Saturday while speaking at the launch of the Police Christmas Security

Campaign at Central Police Station in New Amsterdam.

Jaichand noted that several areas along the Corentyne Coast are used as illegal entry points into Guyana.

“When the Police go to one spot, they come in at another spot,” he pointed out.

M e a n w h i l e , Corriverton’s Mayor Winston Roberts, who also spoke at the same event, suggested that there should

be more regular presence of officers at the port which is used for illegal entry as he also called for those officers to make half hourly contact with the Springlands Police Station.

“That location is very close to the Police station.

A policeman told me that he had no cell phone signal to communicate to the Springlands Police Station.

I cannot accept that. The Police Station is about five minutes’ walk away from the Back track port,” Mayor Roberts said.

He called for the Police to establish frequent road blocks along the Corentyne Highway, noting that persons enter the country not only form Springlands but also from Linepath and villages along the coast.

Commander, Senior Superintendent Jairam Ramlakhan had earlier pointed out that in Region Six, 42 foreign nationals have been charged and placed before the court for illegal entry this year - 14 Cubans, 12 Haitians, 10 Chinese, four Indians and two Colombians. (G4)

69-year-old pensioner who is currently serving a 19-year prison sentence for raping an underage girl has appealed against the severity of his jail term. Back in 2017, George Robin of No 3 Village, West Coast Berbice, was found guilty by a jury of engaging in sexual penetration of a girl under 16 years.

He committed the offence on February 6, 2017. A probation report revealed that Robin, who once served in the Guyana Defence Force (GDF), was a well-respected elder in his community. However, investigations done by a probation officer found that he displayed perverted behaviour towards young girls.

It was disclosed that whenever young girls visited Robin’s shop, he would usually make sexual remarks that would make them uncomfortable. Similar incidents, according to the report, also occurred at schools, where Robin worked as a vendor.

Meanwhile, the young girl, in a victim impact statement, said that ever since she was raped, she has been suffering from depression and emotional trauma.

“I feel depressed and angry.

I would like for him to go to jail, he deserves to be punished. I would like to forget about it but I don’t know if I ever can.”

34% spike in rape in Region 6 …as overall 1% decrease in serious crimes recorded in region

R

egion Six (East Berbice-Corentyne) has recorded a one per cent decrease in serious crimes, but a breakdown of the figures showed that various categories such as armed robberies involving firearms went up by 16 per cent.

This was revealed on Saturday by Regional Commander, Senior Superintendent Jairam Ramlakhan, during the launch of the Police Christmas campaign in Berbice.

Murders decreased by nine per cent while there was a 50 per cent decrease in robbery.

During the period under review, January 1 to November 9, 2021, 10 murders were committed against 11 for the corresponding period last year – presenting a nine per cent decrease. Breaking and entering and larceny dropped by 22 per cent.

However, increases were recorded in other serious crimes such as rape, with a 34 per cent spike; robbery with violence – 25 per cent; larceny from persons – 29 per cent; and robbery under arms involving firearms – 16 per cent increase, that is, 22 cases as against 19 last year.

The Commander pointed out that while the figure stands at 22, the last reported gun robberies were as a result of two instances. In one case, two persons from one house were robbed and in the other, five persons were robbed when armed bandits broke into the home.

For the year so far, some 15 firearms were recovered

by Police in the region compared with 23 for the corresponding period last year.

Gangs

Meanwhile, Commander Ramlakhan noted that in recent months, several notorious gangs have been intercepted with quantities of narcotics. Among these were members of the “Amphibian Crew” from Sheet Anchor

Village, East Canje, who were busted and charged.

Those gang members before the court are Adrian Hetmyer, 43, Kenson Charles, 29, and Hemish Bell, 24. They are all before the court on arms, ammunition and narcotic charges.

He added too that several gang members are now before the court following efforts by the Police to demolish these groups.

One such crew is the “Deportee” gang known for committing robbery under arms on foreign nationals.

The gang, he said, has been causing havoc on the Corentyne.

“The ring leader of this gang was recently nabbed with narcotics on the East Coast [Demerara]. We have evidence that connects him with these robberies – the ‘Deportee’; he will be brought here so that he can answer to these charges.”

The Commander pointed out that most of the serious crimes committed in the region were solved within a matter of days.

“With intelligence we have been able to go and arrest the right persons and charged them and most of them have confessed to the crimes they committed,” he said.

According to the Commander, Paul Kirton, 38; Hembraj Singh, 16; and Tulshwar Narine, 34, who are all on remand for armed robbery, are members of the “Deportee” gang.

Meanwhile, as part of the 2021 Police Christmas Campaign, known characters will be monitored.

Ramlakhan said the aim is to provide a safe environment for all citizens, visitors, business entities and communities during the festive season.

Traffic

As it relates to the traffic situation, the Region Six Commander disclosed that from January 1 to October 24, there was a 46 per cent decrease in fatalities on the road, that is, seven for this

year as against 13 in 2020.

However, as the Christmas periods approaches, regular rigorous traffic enforcement will be conducted on a 24-hour basis so as to reduce and mitigate accidents in Berbice.

Ramlakhan added that adequate traffic management will also be adopted to mitigate traffic congestion during the holidays.

Intensification of roadblocks and raid operations can also be expected throughout the region along with stringent enforcement of the COVID-19 regulations.

The Commander further pointed out that the Police will be using vehicles, motorcycles, bicycles, foot patrol, mounted and marine patrols to ensure that the region is safe with heightened presence at the major markets and the commercial zones during the upcoming holidays.

One of the concerns of Commander Ramlakhan is the frequency at which persons are illegally entering the country through the Corentyne border Guyana shares with Suriname.

For the year so far, a total of 42 foreign nationals have been charged in the region and placed before the court for illegal entry.

They include 14 Cubans, 12 Haitians, 10 Chinese, four Indians and two Colombians. (G4)

oise nuisance is a continuing problem in Guyana especially in public transportation, according to Commander of Region Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara), Errol Watts.

Persons are now being encouraged to video record these cases via their mobile phones and other devises, and report them to the Guyana Police Force (GPF).

The Commander made this comment while he was being interviewed on the Environment Matters monthly programme, that is being hosted by Guyana’s Environmental Protection Agency.

The programme was curated to resolve environmental complaints, and include public awareness and education.

According to the Commander, once the video evidence is submitted to the Police, they will take swift action. “… bring forth those things as a form of evidence so we can make successful prosecutions. We have seen that this has been working very successfully, and we are encouraging persons to continue to bring forth evidence for us to act upon,” the Commander said.

Commander Watts further encouraged that while taking recordings of such incidents, passengers should try their utmost best to be safe.

“If anyone is in a minibus or a hire car and music is being played, when they are out of the minibus, they should take a video of it to include the mini-

bus number or the hire car number… they should be safe…” the Commander said.

The Division Commander said the laws of Guyana requires that minibuses and hire cars should not have any instrument of music within the vehicles, since it can serve as a form of distraction to the drivers while on the roadways.

“It is dangerous to have music in the minibuses, especially when it is being played loudly,” he explained.

In addition, Watts said that there is some flexibility where the regulations were modified under the Road Service Act, for the drivers to have very small speakers just for the purpose of having a radio and a cassette deck.

“With the modern technology, these same small instruments can make a lot of noise. So, we have included on the Road Service clause, which was approved by the Ministry of Home Affairs, that they should have two or three very small speakers, and be very considerate how they use them.”

Even with this small change, the Commander said the situation is being abused by both the drivers and the conductors, and continues to pose as a matter of concern for the GPF. Over the years there have been several complaints by passengers who travel in public transportation, expressing their dissatisfaction, especially when travelling in minibuses.

“In addition to that, we have the Police hotline at headquarters which is 225-6411… an officer will always be there to answer that phone. It is at Force control so when these calls are made, on a daily basis, a return of these calls are forwarded to the Commissioner of Police, who will review them and ensure that action is taken,” he said. uyana possesses a great deal of creative and talented individuals throughout the length and breadth of its ten administrative regions.

Adaiah Fyffe, 27, and Crystal Charles, 20, are the two most recent young talented entrepreneurs that have taken up the mantle of sharing their value-added ideas at the Caribbean level, and have given Guyana that bright neon light of recognition. Not only have they represented Guyana, but they did so in a major way by jumping on the bandwagon of creating and sustaining healthy and environmentally friendly products that are bound to become the new trend of our nation.

These two young vibrant Guyanese are second and third place winners of the recently conclud-

ed Vision2Reality start up challenge, a collaborative project between Nestlé Anglo Dutch Caribbean, as part of the company’s Nestlé Needs Youth initiative, and Junior Achievement (JA) Jamaica. The project targeted youth aged 18-29, with the goal of supporting budding entrepreneurs across the Caribbean.

The project ran for eight weeks, from July 8 to September 14, 2021, and included 279 participants (groups and individuals) from Barbados, Jamaica, Guyana and Trinidad and Tobago.

“WILD Rupununi”

Adaiah, whose start-up product is called “WILD Rupununi”, copped second place with his business initiative that is focused on producing dehydrated tropical fruits that are indigenous to the Caribbean, including mangoes, guavas, papayas, pineapples and pumpkin, just to name a few, all naturally healthy and delicious.

He was awarded a grant of

US$2000 to fund his business.

Adaiah hails from Perseverance, East Bank Demerara. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from the University of Bedfordshire (UK) and is the founder of Muse Holdings Inc. Adaiah shared that business is something that runs in his family and has been instilled in him from a tender age, therefore, the motivation to start his own business came naturally. He stated, however, that even though he grew up in a family that is into the construction business, he has always been drawn to agriculture.

His agricultural journey began when he attended the Guyana School of Agriculture (GSA) where he did a programme in agro-processing. During his time there, he realised how

Adaiah learned of the competition though his community WhatsApp group where a flier with details about the Vision2Reality start-up challenge competition was shared. He decided to take a leap of faith by signing up for the competition where he gained an experience like no other.

“It was very informative and then I got paired with a great mentor, Ms Hazel Marshall. She helped me to elevate everything that I already had done to the next level,” Adaiah explained.

He further explained that apart from boosting his confidence in his initiative, the lessons he was exposed to over the duration of the programme was a game-changer for him

My name is Adaiah Fyffe, and I’m the owner of Muse Holding Inc and we’re about to share with you why supporting ‘WILD Rupununi’ is the way forward.”

He then went on to share the plans of his company and the variety of fruits persons enjoy that would aid in making his venture a successful one.

Referring to the venture as his brain child, Adaiah stated that he is in no rush and intends to take his time to perfect his product.

“I know that I will have a

“I will try my best to get in contact with supermarkets, the Guyana Marketing Corporation (GMC) to take part in having my product displayed and sold and I will utilise the media to get it sold. But the next step is definitely bringing this viable product to the market,” he assured.

Crystal Charles, on the other hand, wowed the judges with her ENBIO initiative.

Crystal’s ENBIO Environmentally Friendly and Biodegradable, gained third place in the competition.

Her venture produces and exports the sisal plant (sisal fiber & agave syrup), intercropped with quinoa.

Crystal received a grant of US$1000 for this not only unique, but also environmentally-conscious initiative.

“I’ve always been interested in sustainable agriculture and biodegradable products and just bringing something of value into the market. That’s why I decided to go along with sisal because it is basically a natural fibre that is 100 per cent biodegradable and it has so many uses.”

Crystal, who hails from Diamond, East Bank Demerara, is currently a senior at the University of Guyana, pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Agriculture. She graduated from the St Stanislaus College in 2017 after completing sixth form, where she earned an Associate’s Degree in Natural Science.

Growing up, large-scale productions and working with farmers always piqued her interest and this was also continuously nurtured by her father who was in the sector himself. Crystal has always sought to be the best version of herself and is inspired to give back to not only her community but also the planet, that’s why she has vowed to make all her productions carbon-neutral and sustainable to the environment.

“And so, my business is really aimed at producing syrup – from the sisal plant – agave syrup and also producing natural fibres and we want to process these natural fibres into various products. But that’s a longterm plan because that is still in the works,” she explained. Her long term plans include producing containers and using the sisal as a fibre in the making of sustainable products since Guyana is moving away from the single use plastic concept.

For Crystal, joining the Nestle competition was not exactly her intention, but after she kept seeing posters of the compe-

tition on her social media ever so often, she took it as a sign that the universe was telling her to take that step. She got what she described as “a brain wave” and signed up for the competition at the very last moment.

She began writing down her ideas which she confessed did not seem great to her, but still pursued it since it was something that has always interested her.

Crystal explained that the lessons were extremely informative and helpful for her since she was able to grasp what she wanted the outcome of her business idea to be like, adding that mentorship played a significant part in her business.

In regards to her idea that was pitched to the judges during the competition, Crystal said she believes that the judges were drawn to her idea due to the fact that she was producing a product that was environmentally friendly and biodegradable, especially with our current climate crises.

“I think that they really loved the idea that the product that I was producing is biodegradable and its carbon-neutral and all of that. So, I think they really loved that idea in general,” she revealed.

The name “ENBIO” was created due to Crystal’s desire to create products that were environmentally-conscious. “I always wanted to make sure that the product I produced was environmentally friendly while also being biodegradable so I basically joined together the two words and came up with the name ENBIO which is short for environmentally friendly and biodegradable.”

Crystal shared that as it relates to the next step of getting her product on the market, she intends to do more extensive research so as to get the best out of the idea and produce quality items for consumers.

She also intends to work on procuring the sisal plant and quinoa. “The plant is new to the Guyanese market and right now I am procuring that plant. I want to start transplanting it and you know, just the whole cultivation process in general with the sisal and also with the quinoa.”

Crystal shared that in regards to garnering assistance in finding a market for her products, Innovate Guyana has already reached out to her, along with her mentor who encouraged her to reach out to her after the cultivation process of her plants is completed.

2 unvaccinated persons latest COVID-19 deaths …76 new cases recorded

GUYANA COVID-19 DASHBOARD NOVEMBER 14, 2021 UPDATE

T

he COVID-19 death toll in Guyana has gone up to 959 after two more persons who tested positive for the novel coronavirus died.

According to the Health Ministry on Sunday, these latest fatalities are a 51-year-old female and a 71-year-old male, both from Region Four (DemeraraMahaica). They were both unvaccinated and died on November 13.

With these two fatalities, the total number of persons who have died from the pandemic so far in November is now 33.

Meanwhile, another 76 persons have contracted the deadly virus, taking the total number of confirmed cases in the country to 36,817.

There are currently 2354 active cases in Guyana including 15 patients in the COVID-19 Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and the remaining 2339 persons in isolation, that is, 57 in home isolation and the other 2282 in institutional isolation.

Additionally, 12 more persons are also in institutional quarantine, according to Sunday’s COVID-19 dashboard.

To date, some 33,504 persons have recovered from the life-threatening virus – 22 more recoveries than the previous day.

Moreover, a total of 372,235 persons have been

tested for the novel coronavirus thus far and of this, 17,349 males and 19,468 females were found to be positive.

Of the 76 new cases detected on Sunday, two were from Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam), six from Region Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara), a whopping 41 cases from the DemeraraMahaica region, another two from Region Five (Mahaica-Berbice), 20 cases from Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne), two more from Region Eight (Potaro-Siparuni) and the remaining three cases from Region Nine (Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo).

There were no new cases recorded in Regions One (Barima-Waini), Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni) and 10 (Upper Demerara-Berbice) on Sunday.

The Guyana Government launched its COVID-19 vaccination exercise back in February and continues to roll it out across the various regions in order to achieve herd immunity and reduce the number of COVID-19 infections.

So far, over 390,000 persons of the adult population have received their first dose of the vaccine and more than 259,000 persons who are 18 years and older are fully immunised.

As it relates to adoles-

cents, over 19,000 children between the ages of 12 to 17 are fully vaccinated.

Persons are encouraged to get immunised since the COVID-19 vaccine provides a layer of protection against severe symptoms of COVID-19.

Nevertheless, as more people continue to get vaccinated, authorities are urging the public to continue observing all COVID-19 preventative measures, particularly masking in public, social distancing and frequent hand washing and sanitising.

The measures also include vaccination requirements to access any public building such as restaurants, places of worship, schools as well as Government buildings.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), some 251,788,329 confirmed cases were reported globally along with 5,077,907 deaths.

The WHO also reported on Sunday that in the Region of the Americas, that is, Latin America and the Caribbean, the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases has increased to 94,820,509 while the death toll in the region has gone up to 2,315,823.

Recent figures show a total of 7,160,396,495 vaccine doses have been administered worldwide.

Unemployed man nabbed with cocaine olice arrested a 45-year-old man on Saturday after he was found with a quantity of cocaine at John Street, New Amsterdam, Berbice.

The arrest was made at about 14:25h.

It was reported that a whiteish rock-like substance suspected to be cocaine, which was wrapped in plastic, was discovered in the left side pants pocket of the suspect who was contacted by a party of Police ranks.

Following the search, he was told of the suspicion and the offence committed and arrested.

The illegal substance, when weighed in the presence of the suspect, amounted to two grams.

He remains in custody as the investigation continues.

This discovery comes less than two weeks after a 72-year-old male was ar-

uyana is targeting 2023 as the commissioning year for its very first on-grid solar farm.

According to the recently launched and expanded Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS) 2030, the farm will have a total capacity of 10 megawatts-peak (MWp).

“This solar PV [photovoltaic] farm will generate one per cent of the total energy demand in [Demerara Berbice Interconnected System] DBIS,” LCDS 2030 states.

This farm will be financed by the GuyanaNorway partnership.

According to DPI, Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo said that fund currently stands at US$84 million.

Advertisements were already done by the Guyana Power and Light (GPL) Inc for consulting services, for topographic surveys, flood risk assessments and geotechnical investigations of the site earmarked for this farm, and seven others. These farms will be built under the Guyana Utility Scale Solar Photovoltaic Programme (GUYSOL).

According to the DPI report, the Government’s solar agenda is wide-reaching and comprehensive, as part of President Dr Irfaan Ali’s plan to deliver 500 MW of new power by the end of 2025.

In addition to the farms to be funded through Guyana’s forest preservation funds, the Government

also intends to power the homes of 30,000 hinterland families using solar PV units.

Senior Minister in the Office of the President with responsibility for Finance, Dr Ashni Singh made that announcement on September 29 when he signed a US$7.2 million line of credit from the Indian Technical Economic Cooperation (ITEC) programme.

Further, solar farms will be built at Bartica and Lethem, using some of the proceeds of a loan from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) under the Energy Matrix Diversification and Institutional Strengthening of the Department of Energy Project.

The executing agency, the Guyana Energy Agency (GEA), has already sought bidders to supply and install transmission lines to accommodate them.

The solar farms, in addition to the other energy sources which will be implemented, will result in a cleaner energy mix that will reduce emissions and provide cheaper energy for businesses and families.

uyana, which is already considered one of the world’s new oil hotspots, could well be sitting on 20 billion barrels of oil equivalent in just one oil block. At least, this is according to projections from analyst Americas Market Intelligence (AMI).

In a recent report titled “5 megatrends in Latin America’s energy sector for 2022 and beyond”, AMI delved into developments in the Guyana-Suriname basin, which it labelled as the most appealing oil frontier market in the world.

It noted that the total projected reserves in the Stabroek block is 20 billion barrels. Additionally, natural gas is also present. It was also estimated that the Stabroek Block would produce nearly 1 million barrels per day by 2027, from seven vessels.

The analysts further noted that the Liza Destiny Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessel has a break even cost of US$35 per barrel and for the Liza Unity US$25 per barrel.

AMI also noted that Guyana’s neighbour Suriname, where oil has been discovered by Total and Apache in block 58, will have

a smaller break even cost than Guyana. Production is expected to start by late 2025. It was also noted that 10 of the world’s leading oil companies are present in the Guyana-Suriname basin.

In Guyana, oil giant ExxonMobil has made more than 20 major discoveries as the operator in the Stabroek Block. In all, six ExxonMobil-operated Guyana producing projects are predicted by 2027, with plans for an eventual 10 in total.

While AMI is projecting up to 20 billion barrels of oil in the Stabroek Block, the current official estimated resource potential in the Stabroek Block, where all the discoveries are sited, is 10 billion barrels of oil.

Noble Corporation currently has four contracted deep-water drill ships active in Guyana. One, the Tom Madden, has a contract that runs until January 2027.

In addition, Noble recently inked a deal for a drillship

with APA Corp in Suriname for one firm well and two well options. In addition, Maersk is currently running one deep-water rig in Guyana.

Guyana, with ExxonMobil as the operator, began producing oil on December 20, 2019, in the Stabroek Block. Guyana’s oil revenues are being banked in the New York Federal Reserve Bank, where it is earning interest.

Developmental drilling has started on Exxon’s second development, the Liza Phase 2 project. Back in May 2019, Exxon was granted approval by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to go ahead with its Liza Phase 2 Development offshore Guyana.

The oil company had said that the project will have the capacity to produce 220,000 barrels of oil per day. Exxon had also revealed that the Liza Phase 2 development

was funded at the cost of some US$6 billion, including a lease capitalisation cost of approximately $1.6 billion, for the <<<Liza Unity>>> FPSO vessel. For the Phase 2 Development, six drill centres were planned, along with approximately 30 wells – 15 productions, nine water injection and six gas injection wells.

The US$9 billion Payara development, the third development, will meanwhile target an estimated resource base of about 600 million oil-equivalent barrels and was at one point considered to be the largest single planned investment in the history of Guyana.

The Yellowtail development, which will be oil giant ExxonMobil’s fourth development in Guyana’s waters, will turn out to be the single largest development so far in terms of barrels per day (bpd) of oil, with a mammoth 250,000 bpd targeted.

Extension officers to benefit from updated training at GSA in 2022 …as Agriculture Ministry aims to better serve farmers

number of extension officers attached to the Agriculture Ministry are expected to receive training from the Guyana School of Agriculture (GSA) in 2022, as the Ministry works towards revamping the operations of its extension agencies.

Officers will receive training on how to properly carry out their functions to better cater to the needs of the nation’s farmers.

This was disclosed

by Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha during a commissioning exercise at the New Guyana Marketing Corporation’s (New GMC) Central Packaging Facility at the Sophia Exhibition Centre last Wednesday.

Minister Mustapha stated that the Government has been working to improve the services being offered to farmers and agro-processors across the country.

He further stated that officials from the Ministry and the Guyana School of Agriculture have been advised to develop a curric-

ulum offering additional training to the Ministry’s extension officers.

“Our senior officers were already informed and very soon they will commence working on a curriculum to offer training to our extension officers.

This programme should be ready before mid next year. Extension officers will be able to receive training through the GSA to improve the services offered to our farmers and agro-processors. This is one of the steps we are taking to revamp the sector so that quality service can be delivered. Agriculture is once again at the forefront of our economy and we have to ensure that our extension personnel are well equipped and informed on how to deliver the calibre of services that were promised to citizens during our 2020 elections campaign trail,” the Agriculture Minister said.

quality of services being offered by the extension arm of several agencies which form part of the Ministry.

After receiving similar complaints during a number of outreaches, Minister Mustapha disclosed that the entire extension arm of the Ministry would soon be revamped. He also said that extension officers who are not willing to work to execute the mandate of the present Government will be relieved of their services.

As it relates to the courses that will be offered to the extension offi-

cers, the Minister said that the curriculum will serve as both a refresher course and teach officers about updated methods of services as Guyana moves towards more technologically advanced approaches to doing agriculture.

The courses are expected to include best practices for proper animal husbandry, artificial insemination techniques, shade house development, a “six-point” method for rice cultivation, post-harvest handling of perishable produce, and smart agriculture practices just to name a few.

s Guyana continues to recognise the need to restrain noise levels from typical offenders such as nightclubs, live music venues, and raucous neighbours, ranks of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) want officials to provide decibel meters to officers in order to assist them in noise ordinance enforcement.

While noise nuisance laws exist as a weapon to combat disruption of the peace, enforcement is usually conducted by officers’ subjective assessments of unreasonable noise levels using only their ears.

Adding to this, Commander of Region Three, Senior Superintendent Errol Watts said that there should be some amendment to the laws of Guyana that cater for quiet zone areas.

A taxi carrying one passenger pulled up just before 11:00 GMT - as a national two minutes' silence for Remembrance Sunday was due to begin - and exploded.

The passenger was declared dead at the scene and is yet to be formally identified.

The male driver was injured and is in hospital in a stable condition.

Detectives from Counter Terrorism Police North West said three men - aged 29, 26 and 21 - were detained in Sutcliffe Street in the Kensington area of the city.

They said they were continuing to keep an open mind about the cause of the explosion and were working with Merseyside Police as the investigation continued "at pace". The security service, MI5, is also assisting.

Armed officers have carried out raids on a property in Rutland Avenue near Sefton Park, and also in Boaler Street in Kensington. Police have not confirmed if the raids are related to the blast at the hospital.

"My partner is really shook up to be honest," he said.

"We were so close and she was feeding the baby when it happened. We heard a loud bang and looked out of the window.

"We saw the car on fire and someone jump out... screaming, and there was someone inside the car.

"The hospital shut down, no-one in or out, so they said, but people were using the back entrance."

Prime Minister Boris Johnson said on Twitter: "My thoughts are with all those affected by the awful incident in Liverpool today.

"I want to thank the emergency services for their quick response and professionalism, and the police for their ongoing work on the investigation."

ntigua and Barbuda Prime Minister and Caricom Chairman Gaston Browne has urged Caribbean leaders to let go of the fear of repercussions and pursue a legal path to climate change funding.

Browne made the call during the final show of “COP26 – Now or Never” on CNC3 on Friday night.

His Government has formed a commission on climate change based on international law seeking to introduce a legal pathway to complement the voluntary efforts of large polluting countries to become legally responsible for their emissions. Tuvalu, an independent island in the South Pacific, was one of the early signees, but the Antigua Prime Minister called for support closer to home.

“We do not believe we can depend exclusively on their random acts of charity whenever our countries suffer the adverse effects of climate. They must be made to pay,” he said of high pollut-

ing nations.

In his address at the COP26 Summit in Glasgow on November 1, Browne told the world: “The difference between Small Island Developing States and industrialised nations is the capacity to respond. It takes a single storm a few hours to destroy the economy and infrastructure of an entire small island State which lacks the necessary financial and other resources to rebound and rebuild.”

Browne said regional leaders must take a stand and not act out of fear that the international community would victimise them.

He explained: “I have to tell you that I’m a little disappointed that none of my colleagues within the Caricom region would have volunteered so far to join, but I remain hopeful that they will because if we do not have this type of harmonised approach in defending our interests and to utilise all the tools available to us, including the legal

Jamaican PM announces SoEs in several Police Divisions

rime Minister Andrew Holness has announced several States of Emergency (SoEs) across the island.

The SoEs were declared in the Police divisions of St James, Westmoreland and Hanover, and in the corporate area in the St Andrew South, Kingston West, Kingston Central, and Kingston East Police Divisions.

Holness said all of these divisions have seen increases in crime ranging from 16 per cent to 57 per cent.

“All have murder rates per 100,000 in excess of the regional average, which is 15 per cent. In fact, the murder rate per 100,000 in these divisions range from a low of approximately 47 per 100,000 to 190 per 100,000,” the Prime Minister said in an emergency

press conference.

“We have decided to recommend the declaration of SoEs having regard to the increase in murders compared year on year both in the communities in which we have declared them and nationally, and these increases we consider to be of an extensive scale such that they threaten public safety,” he added. Argentina votes in midterms amid pressure on President Fernandez

rgentines headed to the polls on Sunday in midterm legislative elections that could see the party of centre-left President Alberto Fernandez lose its Senate majority.

Nearly half the Lower House Chamber of Deputies seats were up for grabs in Sunday’s elections, as well as a third of the Senate seats in a vote that is mandatory for 34.3 million people.

Polls closed at 18:00h (06:00pm) on Sunday.

Fernandez’s Frente de Todos (Everyone’s Front) party is already a minority in the Lower House and analysts believe it risks losing its Senate majority.

“We ask the Argentines to make their will known so we can build the country that they want,” Fernandez told reporters after casting his vote, accompanied by First Lady Fabiola Yanez.

“Today is a congressional election, nothing more.”

The two major parties in the election race – the People’s National Movement (PNM) Tobago Council and the Progressive Democratic Patriots (PDP) – are contesting all 15 electoral districts, but it remains to be seen whether the Dr Denise Tsoiafatt Angusled Innovative Democratic Alliance will present a full slate. The party confirmed 12 candidates earlier this week.

The other political entities contesting the election, thus far, are the Unity of the

People and the Class Action Reform Movement.

T&T records 2nd highest number of COVID deaths over weekend

ealth Minister T e r r e n c e Deyalsingh has revealed that the country’s vaccination programme has stalled. This comes as the country reported 22 deaths from the COVID-19 virus – the second-highest in 24 hours – on Friday. The highest number of deaths, 23, was recorded on May 18.

The Minister, who spoke at a COVID-19 media briefing at the Diplomatic Centre, St Ann’s yesterday, said: “Over the past two weeks, we have been averaging roughly about 1200 per day between first doses of a two-dose regime and the Johnson and Johnson one shot.”

He added that doctors and nurses are burnt out and tired because people were not following health protocols.

Hinds said that every county has seen an increase in COVID-19 cases.

“Previously we saw where some have an increase and some have a decrease and that kept the numbers the same week to week. We have seen now an increase across the board from one week to the next,” he said.

He said with the spike in cases over the last few weeks, there had been an accelerated increase and

upswing in the rolling average.

“There has been a steady week-on-week increase, at first smaller but getting larger from one week to the next as we move from week 40 to week 45.

This is a cause for concern and it is also reflected in what we call the percentage positivity, meaning the COVID tests that were done that come back as positive.

In 2019, the country in the Americas with the highest age-standardised mortality (excluding chronic kidney disease) due to diabetes was Guyana with 82.6 deaths per 100, 000 population.

Several Caribbean countries were in the top 10, including Trinidad and Tobago (third), and Haiti (fourth) at 69.6 and 68.2 per 100,000, respectively. (PAHO 2019) The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted services for the

prevention and treatment of NCDs, affecting global efforts to control diabetes. Persons living with diabetes are at a higher risk of developing severe COVID-19 symptoms and are among the most impacted by the pandemic.

resident Joe Biden's Administration should tap into emergency petroleum reserves to lower rising gasoline prices as Americans go into the holiday season, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said on Sunday.

"We're here today because we need immediate relief at the gas pump and the place to look is the Strategic Petroleum Reserve," Schumer, a Democrat, said at a news conference in New York.

Soaring gas prices and car sales drove a solid increase in US producer prices in October as oil prices hit more than US$80 a barrel, with OPEC and its allies rebuffing US pleas for the producers to pump more crude.

Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm said last Monday Biden could act, but there was still no word on whether he would authorise a sale from the US Strategic Petroleum Reserve, which is held in a series of caverns on the Texas and Louisiana coasts.

Analysts have warned a release from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve would only produce a short-term effect, as it would not increase US production capacity.

As the US economy reawakens after the coronavirus pandemic, supply and demand cannot keep up, especially with supply chain disruptions, Schumer said.

"No industry is spared. But fuel gasoline is the worst of all," Schumer said. "Let's get the price of gas down right now.

And this will do it."

Last week, 11 Senate Democrats urged Biden in a letter to tap the SPR and ban crude oil exports to lower gas prices, citing OPEC constraints on supplies and US exports.

US bank robber identified after decades-long hunt

he fugitive behind one of America's most notorious bank robberies has been identified after a 52-year search, law enforcement officials have announced.

Ted Conrad was working as a teller at the Society National Bank in Cleveland, Ohio when he robbed his employer in July 1969.

He disappeared with US$215,000, worth US$1.7 million (£1.2 million) today.

Investigators from the US Marshals Service said he subsequently lived a quiet and unassuming life.

Conrad, who died in May from lung cancer, was just 20 years old when he pulled

off the heist. He reportedly took advantage of the bank's lacklustre security, walking out with the money stuffed into a brown paper bag as the branch closed on a Friday evening.

By the time other bank employees realised the money was gone two days later, Conrad had disappeared.

He sparked a manhunt that would last for more than half a century, and went on to feature on television shows like America's Most Wanted and Unsolved Mysteries.

s a geopolitical conflict continues to simmer, people are dying in the forests on either side of the border between Poland and Belarus.

This weekend, the body of a young Syrian man was found in the woods near the Polish border village of Wolka Terechowska. The cause of death was not immediately known, according to Polish officials.

The restricted zone near the border is a forbidden space for reporters and aid workers, with no one except local residents allowed to enter.

What happens inside the restricted zone is impossible to fully verify because soldiers and police turn journalists away at every checkpoint. Outside, blankets abandoned on the edge of thick woodlands are often the only reminder that some people have made it through the heavily fortified border.

Now, thousands of people are camped at the Belarusian border as Poland, a European Union member, has denied them entry amid a standoff with its neighbour.

Maurice Stierl, from activist network Alarm Phone, said European countries have not found any other way to deal with the issue of migration “than to see it as a gigantic political problem, which it, of course, is not. Europe has the means to accommodate a couple of thousand people from the Belarusian forests.”

Stierl said it was crucial to emphasise the agency of people on the move.

COP26: China and India must explain themselves, says Sharma

hina and India will have to explain themselves to climate-vulnerable nations, COP26 President Alok Sharma has said as the summit ended.

It comes after the two nations pushed for the language on coal to change from "phase out" to "phase down" in the deal agreed in Glasgow.

But Sharma insisted the "historic" deal "keeps 1.5C within reach".

It is the first ever climate deal that plans explicitly to reduce coal - the worst fossil fuel for greenhouse gases.

The summit, which was initially due to end on Friday, had to go into overtime before a deal was agreed late on Saturday following the late intervention from India to water down the language on coal.

Sharma said the deal struck in the Glasgow climate pact was a "fragile win" and urged China and India to "justify" their actions to nations that are more vulnerable to the effects of global warming.

He told BBC One's Andrew Marr Show: "I am going to be calling on everyone to do more.

"But as I said, in relation to what happened yesterday, China and India will have to explain themselves

Marsh's finest hour leads Australia to glory

M

itch Marsh’s finest hour in Australian gold has seen his country break their men's T20 World Cup title drought as Kane Williamson’s masterclass went in vain in the tournament decider in Dubai.

Opting for skill over powerhitting, Williamson made Australia pay dearly for an early life as he crunched 85 off just 48 deliveries to fire New Zealand to 172-4, the highest total set in the final of the tournament.

But a 92-run second-wicket partnership between Playerof-the-Match Marsh (77 not out from 50) and Player-of-theTournament David Warner (53 off 38) broke the back of the run chase. Australian players stormed the field after Glenn Maxwell (28 no off 18) hit the winning runs, with an overawed Marsh seemingly shocked and delighted in equal measure.

It is vindication for Australia’s decision to promote him to number three earlier this year and then keep him in that spot even when Steve Smith returned to the side for this tournament.

Warner's crowning as the T20 World Cup's leading player meanwhile marks a significant achievement for the opener after he had entered the tournament under a form cloud following a rough Indian Premier League (IPL) campaign.

Hamilton takes victory in Brazil after stunning drive from P10 and pass on title rival Verstappen

ewis Hamilton won the São Paulo Grand Prix after a sensational battle with his rival Max Verstappen in an absolutely enthralling return to Brazil for F1.

Verstappen finished runner-up ahead of polesitter Valtteri Bottas.

Hamilton enjoyed a terrific start from P10 on the grid and was clearly on the charge, team-mate Bottas – who lost the lead to Verstappen at the start – letting him by for P5 on Lap 5. Hamilton then took P2 off Sergio Perez in a duel that began on Lap 17 and culminated in a Lap 19 pass at Turn 4. The first stops took place around Lap 25, but the action built up to a terrific crescendo after Verstappen took a second stop on Lap 41, Hamilton on Lap 44.

tafanie Taylor became just the third woman in history to score 5000 OneDay International (ODI) career runs, as she made a magnificent seventh century to lead West Indies Women to a superb victory. The star Captain finished on 102 not out as the visitors reached 226-4 to secure the win in Sunday’s third and final match and sweep the series 3-0 over Pakistan Women.

Taylor played the ultimate Captain’s knock as she added a West Indies all-time record for the fifth wicket with Chedean Nation. The pair came together with the score at 98-4 and stayed together until Nation struck the winning run. They added an unbroken 128 in 23 overs. Nation found great confidence batting with her inspirational leader and made the highest score of her career – 51 not out off 67 balls with seven boundaries.

It was a day of records for Taylor. When she reached 42, she joined Mithali Raj of India and Charlotte Edwards of England as the only players in history with 5000 runs. She moved on to notch her seventh ton – and second of the year – another record for West Indies.

It was the second century in the series for West Indies – following the career-best 132 by Deandra Dottin in the first match last Monday.

Earlier, Hayley Matthews played some stunning shots as she made 49 off 58 balls with eight fours, as she added 83 for the fourth wicket with Taylor.

10 students benefit from Patron educational programme as BCB hosts 2nd social skills seminar

T

he Berbice Cricket Board (BCB) on Saturday hosted the second of four social skills seminars for youths in the county. The seminar was held at the Fort Wellington Secondary School and attended by 35 youths drawn from clubs in the West Berbice area.

The event was organised under the Board’s Patron Trust Fund, with the first one being held in New Amsterdam last weekend.

Over the next two weeks, a total of 80 youths in Upper and Lower Corentyne will benefit.

BCB President Hilbert Foster, who was present for the entire six hours of the seminar, urged the attentive youths to take full advantage of the opportunities being presented to them by his Board as they were investments in their future.

Youths in West Berbice, he noted, are given the same opportunities as their counterparts in the other sub-associations and they must work hard to improve themselves.

One of the basic problems in the county the Board had observed, Foster stated, was the lack of basic social skills among players who go on to play for the county or Guyana.

The idea for the seminars was conceived by Foster and Board Patron, Natural Resources Minister Vickram Bharrat during one of their regular meetings on the development of Berbice cricket. The seminar was conducted by four graduates of the Tain Campus of the University of Guyana – Seeta Dallo, Marissa Foster, Denica

Henry and Junior Blair, alongside veteran sports administrator Levi Nedd.

Among the topics covered on Saturday were life skills, leadership, basic mannerisms, conflict resolution, table etiquette, balancing of sports and education, and public speaking among others. Foster also spoke of the benefits of being a professional cricketer and the expectations of the BCB for the next set of county cricketers.

He cautioned them to not only focus on their cricket but also on their education as only a few of them would go on to play professionally and as such, having an educational background was very important. He pledged that the BCB would always be a friend of youths and would continue to invest in their future.

West Berbice Cricket Association (WBCA) President David Black expressed thanks to Foster for his commitment to the overall development of cricket in West Berbice, and urged the youths to go back to their clubs to share their new knowledge with their peers. Each of the participants of the seminar was presented with a Certificate of Participation from the BCB. Ten of the youths also benefited from an educational grant of $10,000 each from the BCB under its Patron Educational Trust Fund. The funds would be used to purchase muchneeded educational materials from Metro Office Supplies.

Under the programme, a total of 40 youths would

benefit from grants during the month of November. The youths were also involved in a one-day cricket academy on Sunday at the Cotton Tree Ground under the watchful eyes of a battery of coaches including Leslie Solomon and Travis Harcourt.

Fisherman Masters and Regal Legends successfully defended their titles, while in the open category, Ariel All-Stars were crowned the new champions at Providence Stadium, walking away with the title in emphatic fashion.
