…Chairman anticipates similar growing trend towards year end
Despite global events, the Guyana Bank for Trade and Industry (GBTI) has recorded anoth er stellar performance with a whopping 84 per cent in crease in its net profit after tax during the first half of 2022.
This was reflected in the bank’s mid-year financial report for the period ending June 30, According2022.to a statement from GBTI, its net profit af ter tax totalled over $1.1 billion during the first six months of 2022, reflecting an 84 per cent growth. The commercial bank’s total assets also increased by 14 per cent to $159 bil lion with deposits reaching a record $135 billion. In addi tion, the GBTI Mutual funds has recorded improved re sults as well. In light of this, GBTI Chairman Robin Stoby, SC, said in his report that they anticipate this continued trend in the second half of 2022.“The bank’s improved performance is influenced by an improving loan port folio, favourable market con ditions and stabilisation at the national level… We an ticipate a similar trend for the rest of the year as the local economy continues to grow,” Stoby Moreover, stated.thecommer cial bank further detailed in a subsequent statement that given this performance, it has increased interim divi dend to $6 per share as com pared to $3.5 per share in 2021.But despite these per formances, GBTI, which is Guyana’s largest indig enous bank, says that the sharp rise in cost of living worldwide has not escaped Guyana.“The war in Ukraine has triggered a costly humani tarian crisis that demands a peaceful resolution. At the same time, economic dam age from the conflict will contribute to a significant slowdown in global growth in 2022 and add to inflation. Fuel and food prices have increased rapidly, hitting vulnerable populations in low-income countries hard est. Global growth is project ed to slow from an estimat ed 6.1 per cent in 2021 to 3.6 per cent in 2022 and 2023,” the Chairman outlined. Cushioning impact Nevertheless, GBTI de clared its commitment to cushioning those impacts here. To this end, the bank said it is now providing ready and affordable ac cess to financing. This facil ity – accessible at all GBTI branches across Guyana – is increasingly the preferred route for Guyanese to a high quality of life and making their dreams a reality.

Pushing for urgent action to accomplish food se curity in the Caribbean Community, President Dr Irfaan Ali has contended that the Region does not have the “luxury of time” to address this topicalPresidentcrisis. Ali is on a State visit to Trinidad and Tobago. At a joint press conference on Thursday with Prime Minister of Trinidad, Dr Keith Rowley, the two leaders updated on a se ries of discussions and progress that was made in areas of re gionalFocalimportance.pointsofthis GuyanaTrinidad engagement have been energy, agriculture, tour ism and youth development. Carrying a strong agenda to slash the food import bill and drive agriculture in the region, the idea is to disrupt the mod el of relying on imported goods. The Guyanese leader ex pressed that these “weighty” discussions are not only geared at increasing the food produc tion or getting people involved in agriculture. It is about hav ing the right policy framework in place to cushion incoming in vestments to support farmers, regional trade and the logistics hub in advancing food security plans.Dr Ali outlined, “Make no mistake. We don’t have the lux ury of time to advance this is sue of food security. Food secu rity is not only important from a price perspective. You can have the money but you don’t have the food. We’re seeing even in developed world, many empty shelves. One of the things that we don’t normally address is access to fresh water. Our food production system requires freshAliwater.”said supply chain dis ruptions and shortages brought on by COVID-19 and the Ukrainian war, paint the pic ture for the Region to act with urgency. Removing barriers In the area of food security, Guyana and Trinidad are work ing to combine efforts, policies, commitment to removing bar riers, technology and research into an integrated plan to ad vance food security between the two“Wenations.will be part of the glob al leadership on food security. You [Trinidad] have a very so phisticated manufacturing and agro-processing industry. You already have the advantage in terms of the cost of energy. What we are working on now is building the productive capacity to ensure that the input is there to optimise the production.” In looking at the transition to a food secure region, Ali said it is not hinged on creating disrup tion, but rather re-engineering the current apparatus and in tegrating existing distributors. He noted that the Governments will be engaging the private sec tor to foster a win-win situation. “Now would this create dis ruption? No, but in the eyes of some, it may look like a dis ruption. That is why we’re also trying to bring every single stakeholder on the table. The distributors of this region must be part of the answer. We have to re-engineer a reversal of the production chain and the sup ply chain in terms of food,” the Guyanese Head of State under lined.Guyana has commit ted to sending 5000 coconut plants to Trinidad, as the na tion has faced devastation to this resource in recent years. Additionally, shade houses for vegetable production will also be available for the twin-island republic.
FERRY SCHEDULE
Winds: South-Westerly to South-Easterly between 1.34 metres and 4.47 metres. High Tide: 09:37h and 21:55h reaching maximum heights of 2.22 metres and 2.24 metres. Low Tide: 15:26h reaching a minimum height of 1.04 metre.
Energy Guyana and Trinidad have also committed to advancing a series of action to tackle glob al problems. Apart from energy security, President Ali detailed that even though Guyana is a carbon sink, it is still creating the blue economy to target cli mate“Thechange.war in Ukraine is far away from us but the conse quences are right with us. The supply chain disruption as a result of the pandemic is not caused by us but we are faced with the greatest consequence in that supply chain disruption. We, the people of Trinidad and Guyana, must understand that we live in this global context. Unless we are ready and willing to take and make hard decisions that will allow us to confront the challenges in this global en vironment and to put systems in which we will develop the necessary capacity to confront these global challenges, then we will not be leaving a sustainable pathway.”Energy security has been highly discussed between the two leaders, in carving out a policy that will enable reliabili ty and sustainability. This will bring together human and tech nological assets to better equip the entire region with energy security.“We want a strategic ap proach on integrating our ad vantages that we have in build ing out a sound path towards energy sustainability, resilience and reliance for the region. This is a big part of our agenda with the US too...The fact of the mat ter is that we have to very forc ibly look at our bureaucratic structure to see and to ensure that it doesn’t work as a hin der to the decisions and policies and programmes we want to advance. You can look forward to a very actionable platform through which this relationship will advance and develop,” the President detailed. From this meeting, a work ing group with stakeholders from Guyana, Trinidad and Suriname was created to lead the Region’s energy security agenda and the collaboration with their US counterpart. Barriers Non-tariff barriers have proven to be a significant hin drance to free trade within Caricom countries, but efforts have been ongoing to remove all such barriers within the Region. President Ali underscored that progress has been made to return to true free trade in the Region, with the technical task force handling the removal of all non-tariff barriers. “That technical task force, part of their responsibility is to work on the removal of all non-tariff barriers. We already have a complete list of all the non-tariff barriers and you will see the potential that exists.” According to the Trinidadian Prime Minister, resolving bar riers that have been affecting trade in the Region should be done with “fierce urgency”. In relation to the non-tariff barriers, Rowley said this has been a prevalent issue through out Caricom and hinders the Caricom Single Market and Economy (CSME) mechanism. “Once that is in play and is not under strict control or re duction or elimination, then the whole idea of the single market and economy is undermined… Those are impediments to pro duction in the Region and once there are impediments to pro duction in the Region, it in vites supply from outside of the Region,” the Prime Minister outlined.Typically, Rowley pointed out that countries have been banning produce or other goods from entering their ports due to the possibility of pests. Custom officers can also make this call, if the item in question is a sup posedThethreat.Trinidadian PM point ed out that if policymakers in terpret these statues and have a clear outline, it will prevent persons from venturing out side of these interpretations. Moreover, he added that if coun tries are producing but barriers still exist, then the food security agenda will fail. “There are things you can do that are not tariff and those things are subjective…If a Caricom country is producing food or the raw material for making food…and there are barriers between Caricom coun tries, then increasing Caricom production for Caricom coun tries will not succeed,” Rowley contended. resilienceBuildingto risk Dealing with risks has always been part and parcel of the human condition. We are forced to act in a world of uncertainty about whether an event – leading to good or bad outcomes – would occur. As David Hume pointed out centuries ago, we cannot even be absolutely sure that the sun would rise tomorrow, even though it has done so for eons. We can, however, believe that there is a very high probability that it would so rise, because of our experience. So, we measure risks in terms of probability, and if we are prudent, we take efforts to reduce the probability of unfavourable outcomes to our actions and increase the favourable ones. Risk management has always been integrally connected with survival strategies, ever since early hunters figured out it was better for them to hunt in bands. In commerce, insurance was certainly a major innovation that acted to reduce the dangers of taking risks, as was the decision by Governments to allow the formation of corporations as legal “bodies”. The latter allowed risks to be taken by individuals without their personal assets being threatened. Ever since the financial meltdown of 2008 in the developed countries, “Risk Management” has taken on a higher profile, since it is now accepted that the crisis was precipitated by financial firms practising extremely loose credit risk management. Guyanese bankers and businesses should take note. While those man-made risks have brought us low, newer ones, such as global warming, have augmented older risks originating from the workings of Mother Nature. The extraordinary rainfall over the last year led to massive losses from floods. On global warming, last year the COP26 in Glasgow did not actually give much room for optimism. The risks of our coastland, including Georgetown, being inundated from rising seas have increased exponentially. Not much has changed structurally since the “UN Development Report 2014” honed in on “Risk and Opportunity: Managing risk for Development”. The issue of “risk” was placed at the centre of its efforts to stimulate development in the present aura of doubt and uncertainty that pervades the global recovery efforts. There has been, of course, the discovery of over 10 billion barrels of oil off our shores, but that does not alter the fundamental point about managing risks. In fact, Ghana ignored those lessons after they struck oil in 2007, and are still paying for their precipitate excessive borrowing. We might never be able to know the future, but we can reduce uncertainty about it. As the report noted, there are “the missed development opportunities that arise when necessary risks are not taken. Pursuing opportunities requires taking risks, but many people, especially the poor, are often reluctant to do so because they fear the potential negative consequences. Failure to act can trap people in poverty, leaving them vulnerable to negative shocks and even less able to pursue opportunities that would otherwise improve their well-being.” With the world becoming ever more interlinked, leaders in every sphere of activity, but especially those at the helm of States, cannot remain passive in the face of burgeoning risks. They have to change from being “crisis fighters” to becoming “proactive and systematic risk managers”. In our own Caricom, while some countries, such as Guyana, were able to maintain healthy rates of growth even before oil was struck, most of the other members headed in the opposite direction, because they refused to deal with risks posed by their macroeconomic fundamentals, such as debt-GDP ratios. Maybe they will now take the same advice from the UN: “Protecting hard-won development gains by building resilience to risk is essential to achieving prosperity”. That is true whether one is grappling with natural disasters, pandemics, financial crises, a wave of crime at the community level, or the severe illness of a household’s chief provider. Risk can never be completely eliminated. But people and institutions can build resilience to risk by applying a balanced approach that includes structural policy measures, community-based prevention, insurance, education, training, and effective regulation.”
In terms of women, the PM must be aware of the long struggle by domes tic workers to have ILO Convention 189 on de cent work ratified, so that unionised domestic work ers can take their disputes to the Industrial Court. This is another group of mostly women whose cry could be heard, and whose legitimate call to be fully recognised as workers could be met by a Government that had care and respect for wom en, including those who are working-class, labour ing in the informal sector, and probably working in Ministers’ own homes. The State’s approach to understanding and ad dressing women has his torically been welfarist, with women being seen as a beneficiary (or bur den) on the State, rather than as economically con tributing citizens, wheth er through their unequal responsibility for care of children, the ill and the el derly (which is not counted in GDP), or through their productive contribution to national income. It’s like casting wom en as a vulnerable group. Women are not themselves vulnerable; the social, po litical, economic and gen dered organisation of the society puts them at great er risk of violence and pov erty.Similarly, women don’t want to be protected, they want rights, equity, non-vi olence and freedom. The solution is not more cash transfers, nor the ambigu ity of more “respect.” The issues are more complex, and require meeting wom en’s movement recommen dations, and state commit ments and responsibilities. To this day, there is no Cabinet-approved National Policy on Gender, so we can’t hold the State accountable to its own pol icy for advancing women’s rights and gender equali ty. Women would welcome being part of the PM’s sug gested public discussion. We continue to need im provements to laws and policies (and their imple mentation), fiscal plan ning, and social protection. Meanwhile, care and respect require acknowl edgement that the PM vs Michael Annisette mus cle-flexing ironically leaves women unheard, like a stereotypical trophy in a battle between men. B y DR JAMELAGABRIELLEHOSEIN O n Sunday, I was pleased to see Dr Rowley's post on his Facebook page saying, “I am available for a public discussion on caring and respect for women.” Given worsening eco nomic contraction and so cial insecurity since 2015, and in the wake of the pandemic, such public dis cussion, with the Prime Minister listening to unad dressed women’s issues, is urgent and toisationtheirtion’sarenothinggivenbemoanmentmoneylyststywriteindifficultofplanning,decadessibility,theomy,thetainmycostsclaimsersPublicly-paidnecessary.workaremakingimportantinrelationtohigherofliving.Theeconomaynotbeabletosussalaryincreases,butpoorstateoftheeconexportandmoreisGovernment’sresponnotjustbecauseofofpooreconomicbutalsobecausehowbureaucraticallyitistodobusinessTT.Everyweek,economistsaboutthenecessifordiversification,anahighlighthowmuchislosttoprocurecorruption,peoplethelowprioritytoagriculture,andseemstochange.Otheroil-richcountriessittingonageneraworthofsavingsinheritageandstabilfunds.Wearenot.It’spoliticallymachohitbackattheunions, and easy to demonise them as greedy or self-serv ing at a time when tens of thousands have lost their incomes; but this is exactly when and why Governments should be held accountable by work ers, when and why we should not lose sight of the macro-level.Thosewith lower in comes and increasing scar city must now bear the burden of a state creak ing along on rusty wheels, with the PM at the helm for the past seven years and the PNM in power for the majority of this histo ry. To that end, I want to remind the PM, who is senior to the Finance Minister, of calls by the women’s movement for gender-responsive bud geting. Parliamentarians have been trained, as have those in the Ministry of Finance, but the Minister himself seems to have no clue or care about why such a fiscal approach is essential, and why other countries have adopted it already.Again, this is an ex ample of how the macro is failing the society, and how solutions are recom mended and Regardingignored.labour is sues, there’s also a cate gory of Public Servants whose working conditions may be invisible to oth ers. These are employees on short-term contracts of anywhere between one and six months; professionals with experience and qual ifications, but no job secu rity.Historically, women en tered the Public Service be cause it offered stable em ployment, which was good for raising stable families; now there is an entire tier of mostly women who can not access vacation leave, sick leave or maternity leave, nor loans for a car or house. Precarious labour conditions are everywhere.

Haiku is a form of poetry from Japan. It is composed of 17 sounds, or syllables. There is no title for a haiku poem. There is no punctuation. There are no capital letters. But there is a specific form you need to follow: Line 1 has 5 syllables Line 2 has 7 syllables Line 3 has 5 syllables Scifaiku generally follows the haiku format. Because many scientific and technology terms found in science fiction are many syllable words, several scifaiku may need to be written in a series to best make your point. Now mind what I say. This deed of thine shall cost thee all thou art worth.” “Do your worst, and welcome,” said the brute, “What harm can you do me?” and passed on. But the sparrow crept under the tilt of the cart, and pecked at the bung of one of the casks till she loosened it; and then all the wine ran out, without the carter seeing it. At last he looked round, and saw that the cart was dripping, and the cask quite empty. “What an unlucky wretch I am!” cried he. “Not wretch enough yet!” said the sparrow, as she alighted upon the head of one of the horses, and pecked at him till he reared up and kicked. When the carter saw this, he drew out his hatchet and aimed a blow at the sparrow, meaning to kill her; but she flew away, and the blow fell upon the poor horse’s head with such force, that he fell down dead. “Unlucky wretch that I am!” cried he. “Not wretch enough yet!” said the sparrow. And as the carter went on with the other two horses, she again crept under the tilt of the cart, and pecked out the bung of the second cask, so that all the wine ran out. When the carter saw this, he again cried out, “Miserable wretch that I am!” But the sparrow answered, “Not wretch enough yet!” and perched on the head of the second horse, and pecked at him too.

Attorney General & Legal Affairs Minister Anil Nandlall, SC Former Chief Elections Officer (CEO) Keith Lowenfield, his Deputy Roxanne Myers and embattled Region Four Returning Officer Clairmont Mingo
“I’ve had conversations with the DPP (Director of Public Prosecutions, Shalimar Ali-Hack) and the report is that Magistrates within the system are not proceeding with the matter with the seriousness and the expediency with which they should, having regard to the importance of the mat ter and having regard to the length of time that the matters are pending before them.”“Magistrates have made applications to recuse them selves and some are sim ply not determining wheth er the case should be tried summarily, meaning in the Magistrate’s Court, or should be taken indictably before a Judge and a jury. That’s a decision that Magistrates have to make. It’s a proce dural decision that has to be made to determine how the cases will move forward [but] Magistrates have not been making that decision. One Magistrate has made the decision that the matter be taken indictably and that particular matter is being appealed. But that is only one charge out of 32,” the AGNandlallcontended.went on to out line that these matters are of utmost importance to Guyana and its people since the charges on which they are predicated, are grave and serious. He noted that when such alleged acts are committed, then it is the State of Guyana that is un der attack and therefore, the State has a responsibility to ensure, in this case par ticularly, that the charges brought are heard and de termined within reasonable time and in accordance with evidence and the applicable law.To this end, the Attorney General disclosed that he has requested the Director of Public Prosecutions, whose office is prosecuting these matters, to push for the cases to be treated with the type of seriousness and alacrity warranted. In the same breath, how ever, Nandlall clarified that by doing this, he is in no way stepping over any boundar ies. He pointed out that as Legal Affairs Minister and Attorney General, he is an swerable for matters in the justice sector and therefore, has a responsibility to speak out when cases are not being processed, heard and deter mined within a reasonable time as they deserve. “I hope that what I say here is not twisted and mis interpreted to mean that I’m being unduly critical to any Magistrate or that I’m as cribing improper motive to any Magistrate or that I’m bringing the administra tion of justice into disrepute or that I’m trying to in any form or fashion influence the outcome of any case be cause I am doing no such thing. And I want to make that abundantly clear. I’m expressing views that I’m duty bound to express as the Minister positioned where I am,” AG Nandlall asserted. Nevertheless, the elec tion fraud cases were called up last month and have been adjourned until October 6. Given the seriousness of these cases, the DPP Office has recruited sev eral private legal practi tioners to prosecute the matters. The case for the prosecution is being led by Darshan Ramdhani, QC, while Senior Counsel John Jeremie and Attorneys-atLaw Nigel Hughes, Ronald Daniels, Konyo Sandiford, Eusi Anderson, and Latoya Roberts are appearing on behalf of the three accused persons. The recount exercise also proved that Mingo had heavily inflated the figures in Region Four—Guyana’s largest voting District, in fa vour of the then caretaker APNU/AFC regime. In August 2021, GECOM voted to termi nate Lowenfield, Myers, and Mingo. The firing of these offi cials was met with much sat isfaction by the Government, which hailed it as a step in the right direction to re storing public confidence in GECOM. (G8)

AG laments slow pace of electoral fraud cases at Magistrates’ Courts
Attorney General and Legal Affairs Minister Anil Nandlall, SC, has expressed concern over the pace that the Magistrates’ Courts in Georgetown in deal ing with the dozens of elec toral fraud charges that were filed against sever al former Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) offi cials and political activists over their involvement in at tempts to sway the results of the March 2020 General and Regional Elections. “I have expressed my con cern about the pace at which these cases are being dealt with in the Magistrates’ Court, or the lack of pace,” Nandlall disclosed during this week’s edition of his programme, Issues In The News.Stemming from the March 2, 2020 elections, some 32 electoral fraud cas es have been filed in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts against several po litical activists includ ing APNU/AFC’s Volda Lawrence and GECOM of ficials including former Chief Elections Officer (CEO) Keith Lowenfield, his Deputy Roxanne Myers and embattled Region Four Returning Officer Clairmont Mingo. Most of these charges were filed in late 2020 and earlyAccording2021. to Nandlall, he did not raise his concerns in the past because he wanted to allow the system to work but nearly two years later, those matters are still lan guishing in the court sys tem.

Youth shot during argument over female
…(Police) story Everyone in Guyana knows about “provin’ story”, otherwise known as “he seh dem seh” story. In the media, it’s called “allegations”, based on “hearsay” which has come to a point where the person being gossiped about demands that the allegations be proven!! Since we Guyanese mostly talk about people – proving, your Eyewitness understands, that we’re of the “lowest minds”, as opposed to talking about events (middling minds) or, (God forbid!) ideas, which is the domain of the “highest minds” – there’s always a lot of “provin’ stories” making the rounds here, which cause tempers to flare!! To illustrate the point, talking about “what type of governance system is best for Guyana” is talking about ideas. You don’t see people coming to blows over that, do you?? Talking about whether the May 2 elections were rigged or not is talking about an event – and yes…discussions about this do get more animated. But no blows!! However, call some names about who did the rigging and you have scenes of some big one in the society cussing out till “watah na deh fuh wash am!!”, and some pulling down their drawers and beating pots in the streets!! Or filing libel suits!! Yes…the “lowest minds” abound in all strata!! Anyhow, right now, there’s a big “provin’ story” concerning the Police Force making the rounds - and titillating folks from Point Playa to Crabwood Creek!! Police?? Who hasn’t been hassled by these “upholders of law and order” - and shaken down for a fried rice?! And wish they’d get their comeuppance!!? Well, it’s now payback time – with a vengeance and then some!! If it weren’t being reported in our grubby parochial press, you’d swear you were looking at an even grubbier Hollywood gangster flick!! A fella who’s part of the in-crowd of G/town is gunned down in front of the gaudiest night spot in the said town (electric, fake palm trees in the tropics??!!) – and opposite the homes of the President and Prime Minister of our fair land!!!! After a flurry of provin’ stories involving a convicted drug smuggler, the investigation peters out. Until a detective’s busted at the home of a smaller-fry drug smuggler - and his mug shot is plastered across the papers!! Fella then begins to sing over social media better than Skeng – about guns, killings and coverups involving his boss in the GPF!! And that’s where the nasty stuff hits the fan – because he’s now calling names!! Accusations about coverups in the Police Force? Ho hum!! But call a name –especially a “big one” – well that’s a whole new game!! Cause when one name is called, it’s like pulling a loose yarn in a sweater – the whole thing’s gonna soon unravel!! And that’s what’s happening – and with WHAT names!!!

…you’re you Your Eyewitness did just say that folks don’t get their dander up over ideas, didn’t he?? So, is the motion by the Opposition GECOM Commissioners that BIOMETRICS be included in the upcoming deliberations for legislation on electoral reform gonna generate heat?? Your Eyewitness doesn’t think so –even though it’s as relevant as the Police soap opera. So, if they’re smart, should the Opposition be calling names?? Well, they said they’re concerned that folks who shouldn’t have voted did vote at the last elections, and want “biometrics”. Like the fingerprints of all voters be entered on the Register/voters list, so when folks show up to vote they gotta match the records!! So maybe we’ll have some names of the dead and emigrated who voted “called” for some excitement?? Your Eyewitness doesn’t think so. All this is a repetition of the subterfuge that ID’s to be used for voting in the 1997 elections!! The PNC agreed, but then went to Court screaming “Illegality!!!” Who’d they think they’re foolin’?

Do I need to report the results from my COVID-19 self-test? The answer is yes, especially if the result is positive, said Health Minister, Dr Frank Anthony.Heis urging people to register the result of their home COVID-19 test to the Health Ministry as this will help health officials under stand the prevalence of the disease in the country. “…if you have tested pos itive then you should give that information to us so that we can have a better picture of how many persons are positive,” appealed the Minister to those self-test ing.According to him, some people have used these tests, tested positive, and have not reported their pos itive results to the Health Ministry. He explained, “If we don’t get those reports then the numbers that we have would be an underesti mate of persons who are ac tually having COVID.” Guyana introduced COVID-19 home testing in February, and while some people may choose this op tion to know their status, it is not enough to fulfill in ternational travel require ments.Itwas implemented to prevent gatherings of people at testing sites across the country in light of persons rushing to get tested amid a surge in positive cases. In addition to the self-testing, Guyana has adequate testing capacity with the National Reference Laboratory being able to conduct at least 2000 PCR tests within a 24-hour peri od. Moreover, the various re gional hospitals across the country also have testing ca pabilities. Fisherfolk who operate in the waterway along with other boat owners have been asking for the grass to be cut in smaller portions, which would make it potential ly less harmful when it en tangles with their seines or wraps around their fishing pens. The issue, they said, was raised at several levels. In fact, Region Six Chairman David Armogan in June said that Chief Fisheries Officer Denzel Roberts had written to him, asking for the region al administration to meet with the grasscutters. “He said that they are cutting it too big and they are pulling seines and the pens of the fisherfolks. When the grass is coming some times looking like an island, it breaks the pens,” Armogan said.Armogan had promised to have dialogue with the contractors who are cutting grass in the Canje River. The machine is also expect ed to be used in the Canje River.Meanwhile, also in June, the fishers who operate from Rosignol raised the issue with Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo about the improper disposal of grass which flows out of the Canje River and into the Berbice River, thus affecting their trade. The Vice President had promised to focus on a longterm solution to the issue. Some of the fisherfolk say they have been unable to work for the past four months.Ganesh Mootoo of Bath Settlement, West Coast Berbice, Region Five (Mahaica-Berbice), has four fishing boats operating in the Berbice River. He told this publication that the grass continues to affect him. “When you put down the chase, the grass pulling it down and you can’t get the catch because the chase does provide the fish to run into the seine. Economists project recession in Chile as Q2 GDP misses forecasts
Chile's gross domestic product came in be low expectations in the second quarter of 2022, central bank data showed on Thursday, leading econo mists to forecast a potential recession as pandemic-relat ed stimulus is unwound. The Andean country's economy grew 5.4 per cent in the second quarter from a year earlier, but showed no growth from the previous three months in seasonally adjustedEconomiststerms. polled by Reuters had expected a 5.7 per cent increase year-onyear and a 0.3 per cent rise over the previous quarter.
The performance high lighted Chile's struggle to grow as the central bank ag gressively tightens its mone tary policy to tame soaring in flation, which reached a near three-decade high last month. "Chile's economy mere ly stagnated in Q2 and the chances are high that it will fall into recession over the second half of the year," Capital Economics' Latin America economist Kimberley Sperrfechter said in aShenote.also mentioned that building current account risks were set to keep the peso on the backfoot, with the local currency weakening 2.2 per cent against the dollar following the latest economic figures. The central bank said in a report that data were mixed among sectors, with personal care and transportation fuel ling growth in services activ ities while mining and agri culture dropped on a yearly basis in the world's largest copperAndresproducer.Abadia, chief Latin America economist at Pantheon Macroeconomics, said Chile's economy per formed poorly in the first half, reflecting tighter fiscal and monetary policy while domes tic fundamentals deteriorat ed. Petro has promised to reopen largely-shuttered trade across the porous 2219-kilometer (1380-mile) border. Petro and Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro have each named ambassa dors to each other’s countries. "Our business owners are looking for this not to be sub ject to sanctions," Umana add ed, without offering details. A United Nations envoy said last year that sanctions on Venezuela put in place by the US and the EU were wors ening a humanitarian crisis and recommended relaxing them, much to the chagrin of the country's opposition. The reopening will not mean a large uptick in trade in the short term but will be key to re-establishing institu tional control in an area affect ed by illegal economies and smuggling, Umana said. Trade between the two countries this year could total more than US$600 million, he added, after reaching US$316 million in the first half, about the same it reached during all of 2021.Bilateral relations broke down in early 2019 after Caracas objected to members of the Venezuelan opposition, supported by the US Trump Administration, trying to send aid trucks across the bor der from Colombia. A US au dit last year found the effort was not planned in alignment with humanitarian principles. (Excerpt from Reuters)

Team Mohamed’s ve hicles, distinguishable by the display of the Golden Arrowhead on their roofs, may very likely be in a class by themselves come Sunday, as they seek to break into the six-second mark – a feat the Pro-mod car is more than ca pable of achieving, according to reports.Toguarantee that fans get their money’s worth, Team Mohamed’s have, over a month ago, acquired the services of the United Statesbased Brandon Jackson of T1 Race Development to lead the preparation of the GTRs, to ensure that all systems would be in place for Sunday’s show down.A ticket to witness the event costs $2000 for adults and $1000 for kids, while VIP and VVIP arrange ments cost $30,000 and $40,000 respectively.

NEW ZEALAND There is a quick turn around between games, and that might tempt New Zealand to make a change or two. But they don’t get to play with their strongest XI often, so don’t be surprised if they stick to the same group.

Wednesday’s encounter was just Kane Williamson’s third ODI post the 2019 World Cup final. This is also the format that could well give Williamson some breathing space to thrive and get back among the runs. Even though precious Super League points are on offer, New Zealand’s agenda would be to get their first-choice side to fire in uni son.

Series wins in 50-over cricket do not come of ten for West Indies these days. The side have been in transition for a while now, but their recent prom ising performances against India suggest that the batting lineup may be slowly settling down. Those steady strides have finally resulted in a very important victory on Wednesday (August 17) in the opening ODI against New Zealand. That win end ed a nine-game losing streak in this format for the hosts, and another win on Friday would help them pick up a series victory that looked quite daunting 48 hours ago against a full-strength New Zealand outfit. West Indies have won only one of their last sev en series, and that victory came against Netherlands. So, for them to finally clinch a series victory against a top side like New Zealand would do them a world of good with the World Cup scheduled next year. In the first game, West Indies never allowed the New Zealand batters to set tle down. The top order, and then later on Michael Bracewell, got starts, but just before they could cap italise on it, they were re moved. And from West Indies’ top order, Shamarh Brooks put his hand up to get the job done in the chase. As much as the Windies would have loved to add Shimron Hetmyer to the mix, his absence gives the likes of Keacy Carty and Jermaine Blackwood an opportunity to make an impression.
A win today would seal a much-needed series and ODI Super League points for the West Indies
