Welcome to the Diamond Ball Dear Friends and Supporters of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society,

Martin & Janeen Burruano 2016 Diamond Ball Chairs

Thank you for coming together for the 24th Annual Diamond Ball to celebrate the advances we have made in the fight to eradicate blood cancers. Special thanks to our generous sponsors, attendees and the entire community. The progress that has been made to develop a cure for blood cancers would not have been possible without you, and we truly appreciate your commitment to this worthwhile cause. This years’ Service to Mankind Award will be presented to Steven J. Longo of The Benchmark Group for his leadership and selfless dedication to The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Tonight, we will also honor many individuals who are involved in the efforts to find a cure our volunteers, supporters, researchers, physicians, and the many families, friends and neighbors who have been touched by leukemia, lymphoma or any of the blood cancers. Their commitment is truly inspirational. On behalf of The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, I would like to thank each of you for your continued support. I hope you enjoy this special evening filled with wonderful music, food and friendship, knowing that the financial success of the Diamond Ball will continue to advance The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s mission to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma. Together we will continue to fight to improve the quality of life for patients and their families.

Mistress of Ceremonies

Jacquie Walker

Jacquie Walker is celebrating her 33rd year as news anchor at WIVB-TV Channel 4… the only woman in Buffalo broadcasting who has celebrated this milestone at one television station. She anchors News 4 at 5 & 6 and the #1 rated News 4 at 11 p.m. For her outstanding career, Jacquie was inducted into the Buffalo Broadcasters’ Hall of Fame in 2011. The Buffalo Excellence in Media Awards selected her as ‘Television Personality of the Year’ in 2012. Buffalo Business First has named Jacquie among the most influential people in WNY. Jacquie has been a dedicated volunteer for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society for decades. She served as a longtime co-host of the Leukemia Televent and says she has had the true pleasure of watching many of the young patients who appeared on those early telethons grow up to become healthy young adults. It’s a testament to how your donations for blood cancer research are saving lives. Almost from the beginning, Jacquie has been emcee of our annual Diamond Ball. In 1999, her dedication to the fight against Leukemia and Lymphoma was honored with the prestigious Service to Mankind Award. Jacquie truly believes in serving others through community volunteerism. She has received major awards from the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Kevin Guest House, Rotary Club, National Conference for Community and Justice and other charitable organizations. For the past 7 years, the Buffalo chapter of the American Association of University Women has presented a $5,000 scholarship in Jacquie’s honor to a local college student. Jacquie’s work has been recognized with dozens of journalism awards, fifteen Emmy nominations, and the Governor’s Award for Excellence in Communications. She is proud to be on the News 4 team that earned two National Edward R. Murrow Awards for coverage of the tragic crash of Flight 3407 in 2009. In 2012, she anchored live coverage from Canada as Nik Wallenda completed his historic wire-walk over Niagara Falls. Jacquie’s husband, Mike Beato, is an internet and technology consultant. They are the proud parents of two young men: an administrator with the Stern School of Business, New York University, and an attorney with the Washington, D.C. law firm, Wiley Rein. The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society extends a heartfelt thank you to Jacquie for her dedication and commitment to our mission of a CURE for leukemia, lymphoma, and the blood cancers. We are honored to have Jacquie serve as our Mistress of Ceremonies for our 24th Annual Diamond Ball!

In Memory of Bob Koop

November 4, 1947 - January 1, 1995 In Special Tribute to the fond memory of a brave leader who truly believed in, and had a clear vision of, our goal of finding a CURE for leukemia, lymphoma and blood cancers. Bob Koop, who came to Channel 4 as a news anchorman in 1981, truly exemplified the meaning of a dedicated journalist. Colorful on and off the air, he was known for his knowledgeable, caring and professional manner. The impact of his tough battle with leukemia and his generosity in helping others will always be remembered by the Western New York community. The memory of his courageous fight will live on through the dedication of our volunteers, staff and especially our patients as we continue to fight to find a CURE.

IN LOVING MEMORY Dr. Meir Wetzler, MD, FACP 1955 – 2015

Chief of the Leukemia Section and Medical Director of Clinical Services in the Department of Medicine at Roswell Park Cancer Institute

Dr. Wetzler was a very passionate and kind person; a dedicated, brilliant doctor who truly made a difference in every life he touched. He is greatly missed and remembered always.

“Most patients that get cancer feel that it needed to be treated yesterday. I understand it. It feels like an emergency. This cancer can’t keep growing. But the most important thing is not to do surgery tomorrow. To have the right treatment plan is so much more important than doing something now. It’s also critical to know if surgery is even the right first decision. The first step may be to shrink the tumor, or to do some further tests. In fact, surgery first may be the wrong thing to do. So if someone you love hears “it’s cancer”, please ask them to take just one day to talk with us. The treatment path they choose first is so critical to doing the right thing.” — Dr. Boris Kuvshinoff II, Surgical Oncologist

ANNOUNCING: 2016 Light The Night Walk - Buffalo Co-Chairs

Rocco & Debbie Surace What is the Light The Night Walk?

Light The Night Walk is The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) international evening fundraising walk to celebrate & commemorate lives touched by cancer. Participants carry illuminated balloons along the walk course – red for supporters, white for cancer patients & survivors, and a special gold balloon for those who walk in memory of a loved one. Participants can become Team Captains by forming teams of friends, family, co-workers, etc. Each walker is asked to raise funds to help fight blood cancers. These funds are spent locally on blood cancer research and local patient aid & services.

Why Walk?

It’s fun! It’s inspirational! More than a walk, the evening is a celebration that includes music, food, a prize wheel, Chinese auction and other family activities. And you’ll be helping hundreds of thousands of Americans battling leukemia, lymphoma, or myeloma.

Please join us in 2016!

Teams and walkers can sign up now! Committee members are also needed, and sponsorship opportunities are currently available. Please call our Chapter Office at 716.834.2578 or 800.784.2368, e-mail luann.burgio@lls.org or visit www.lightthenight.org/wcny to sign up or for more information. Funds raised from Light The Night will help advance our mission to CURE leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma, and to improve the quality of life of patients and their families.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!

Spare Change and Currency can be powerful in the fight against blood cancers. With service-learning programs like The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) Pennies for Patients and Pasta for Pennies, presented by Olive Garden, students can impact the lives of kids with blood cancer and make a positive difference, simply by collecting spare change and currency. LLS turns these donation into funding for treatments and cures that save lives…not someday, but today. How does Pennies for Patients and Pasta for Pennies work?
