FROM ABANDONED TO "LIVE UP"
Community Center —— Architecture Renewal Project
Academic, Individual project
Spring 2023
Instructor: Xiaoyue Hu, Prof.Minghao Zhou (zhouminghao@tongji.edu.cn)
Located in Yangpu District, Shanghai , this project aims to explore the way to revitalize an old and vacant amenity space in this aging community. The population of senior people over 60 years old in Yangpu District reaches 40.3%, and the government sets an ambitious goal to renovate the abandoned architecture with more than 1.5 million square meters this year. Via key architectural methods of enriching the façade design , inserting new programs , highlighting the central “LIVE UP” space and reorganize the circulations , this project creates an attractive space in both architecture and interior aspects for the local residents.

Elderly Health Community ——Rural Renewal Project
Academic, Individual project
Winter 2023
Instructor: Yanguang Zhu, Prof.Jianlong Zhang (zhangjl@tongji.edu.cn)
Located in Songjiang District, Shanghai, the site is far away from city center. The history of the site can be traced back to the Qing Dynasty, and there is a stone tablet still remains today. But nowadays, most of the buildings in this site are under-use and many problems come out, like aging population, population loss. However, the site carries the memories of many elderly residents. So, I decide to transform the site into a healthy elderly community and remain some “history factors”, which can establish a “garden community” for some old people to live in and enjoy their life.

Metal Pavilion ——Urban Renewal Project
Instructor: Yanguang Zhu
Located in Dessau, Germany , the site used to be an industrial area surrounding by some industry building, like power station. The “red thread” passes through the site and it is an important node along the “Green Ribbon”. There are some famous architectures of Bauhaus in this city. I select the metal as the theme of this project which is one of the curriculums of Bauhaus in history. The project aims to design a metal pavilion , which is not only a museum for the city , but also offer the residents nearby a place for community activities

Two Axes —— Urban Design Project
Academic, Individual project
Summer 2023
Instructor: Siyi Liu
Located in Istanbul, Turkey , the site used to be a prosperous area with many fabulous sceneries. But nowadays it faces many problems, like crowded and narrow streets, lack of vitality along the waterfront space and no playgrounds for local children. According to the Turkey’s city population website, there are more than 15% children between 0-14 ages in the Uskudar area. This project aims to explore the way to improve these urban problems. Via design methods of sorting out street levels, improving the architecture texture and functional distribution, discovering the vitality of waterfront space and increasing child-friendly public spaces within neighborhoods , this project brings vitality back to the area and improves the living conditions of local residents.
