A Brief History of the annual Guyana Institute of Historical Research Conferences


Since 2008, the GuyanaInstitute of HistoricalResearch Conference has been avenueforpeople of allages and backgrounds-Professors, teachers, civil society, students, museum and archive professionals, history buffs, genealogists, and the general public public-to explore and celebrate many facets of our past that shape our community to this day. Hosted annually by the Guyana Institute of Historical Research, this gatheringincludes presentations, and paneldiscussions covering a wide range of topics within the realm of colonial and contemporary history.
The COVID pandemic has changed the dynamics of hosting the annual conference. In 2020, the Conference was held online. It is expected that when the COVID Virus is over, that the organizers will resume face to face presentations, as well as hybrid conferences.

Welcome tothe 2023 featuredspeakers, as well as the presenters. This year we are pleasedto introduce the featuredspeakers of the sixteenthresearchconference. Mr. Derrick Cummings is a seniorPublic Servant. He is the PermanentSecretary of the Ministry of Public Affairs. He will deliver his address at the cultural evening, on Thursday 22 June, in the auditorium of the Critchlow Labour College.

Dr. Mark Kirton is an outstandingAcademic. He has lectured at the University of Guyana, University of the WestIndies, St. Augustine Campus, Georgetown Campus, and undertaken tours with his students to Brazil, the OAS, United Nations,and other international organizations. He is a SeniorLecturerin InternationalRelations. Dr. Kirton is fluentin Portuguese. His most recentpublication is, Building Bridges in the Amazon Guyana-BrazilRelations into the 21st Century.
Day 2 24 June
Dr. Kumar Mahabir is a Senior Lecturerin Anthropology atthe University of Guyana(UG) in the Caribbean, and a Fellow of The Eccles Centre forAmerican Studies - British Library. He is also the Founderand Executive Directorof the weekly Sunday ZOOM program hosted by the Indo-Caribbean CulturalCentre (ICC). Dr. Mahabir is also a former AssistantProfessoratthe University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT). He obtained his Ph.D. in Anthropology from the University of Florida (UF) in the USA, and his M.Phil and BA degrees in Literatures in English from the University of the West Indies (UWI). He is the authorof 12 books to date
