WATER IMPRINT CATCHMENT THINKING AS A NEW APPROACH TO RETHINK URBAN DENSIFICATION STRATEGIES Ph.D. thesis Monash University, Monash Art, Design and Architecture + CRC for Water Sensitive Cities 2015-2019 Urbanisation has always altered the natural water landscape: wet areas have disappeared or become intangible within the human-made urban environment. This phenomenon occurs to an increasing extent due to urban infill developments in growing metropolises. This Ph.D. research looks at the challenges of urban renewal and densification through the lens of water and water catchments. Using speculative architecture and generative design, it envisions alternative cityscapes, where water and nature have an imprint in the artificial urban environment. The research proposes a series of exemplary water sensitive demonstration projects in Melbourne that can serve as adaptable models for other ‘growing water cities’.

Layered analysis of the fabric of urbanised catchments

New, water-sensitive morphologies developed for different urban conditions

Hybrid, water sensitive landscape alternatives for the Elster Creek Catchment in south-east Melbourne

This multi-scalar research represents design projects at various scales.

The large, catchment-scale projects investigate innovative urban planning and policy-making mechanisms that can inform strategic decision-making.

These are complemented by several neighbourhood-scale projects, which demonstrate how water sensitive, catchment-scale densification strategies can inform new urban morphology and architectural quality at smaller scales.

Furthermore, the neighbourhood-scale projects reveal how a variety of missing middle building typologies can be integrated into, and establish interaction with, a multifunctional public space. They represent a diversity of inbetween situations from private to public and between wet and dry.

Finally, the drawings aim to challenge the current image of the city and discuss whether these ‘sponge suburbs’ can be equally Melbournian.

PAVILION ‘GIOCHI DI LUCE’ A PAVILION MADE OF STRAW AND LIGHT Design Architect Follow-up project of international idea competition (International Winner) Cming Engineering Team Caino, Province of Brescia, Italy 2018 This projects is currently in design development phase.

The Pavilion ‘Giochi di Luce’ is the kick-starter project of Promopaglia, an Italian initiative aiming to promote strawbale construction. The pavilion is located in Caino, in Northern Italy, and it is an extension to an existing elementary school building. The multipurpose room will serve as a canteen, exhibition space and a double-classroom. The architectural language of the pavilion is defined by the play with sunlight and materiality.

THE CAMP NUCLEUS A NETWORK `FROM THE DOORSTEP TO THE MARKET BEYOND THE CAMP` IDeA `Place and Displacement` idea competition entry Top 10 Finalist (Kakuma site) In collaboration with Daniel Owuor Nyandega Kakuma, Kenya 2017 This proposal considers the market as an element (nucleus) of a wider and complex network both in the physical and the online space. Expected to be refugee run and owned, the new market network taps into the creativity and entrepreneurial potential of refugees, functioning as an incubation space and a social hub.

ETERNAL LIGHT WORLD WAR MEMORIAL Graduate of Architecture Ernő Bogos Birou Individual de Architectura Miercurea Ciuc, Romania 2014 The Studio of Ernő Bogos was commissioned to design a memorial that commemorates the soldiers of the city who served during the world wars. I was responsible for delivering a design that fits into the historic environment and meets the functional demands of a memorial. Two vertical cuts embrace small, stepped ledges for individual candel lights that unite in an eternal light on the top.

The statue was finally erected and inaugurated in 2016.

ZANGLA SOLAR SCHOOL AND SOLAR COMPOST TOILET IN THE HIMALAYAS Skill-based volunteer Csoma`s Room Foundation Zangla, Ladakh, India 2015 Zangla village, located in the Zanskar Valley, is home for slightly more than 500 people. The harsh weather conditions make it impossible to sustain the local school during wintertime, hence the Hungarian Csoma`s Room Foundation, which also had been renovating the royal palace previously, started to build a new solar school in 2012. In 2015 I participated in the interior works of the school building, along with the construction of a solar compost toilet. Both structures were made from local materials using local technologies in collaboration with local craftsmen.

CHATEDRAL SAINT MICHAEL `CONNECTING HEAVEN AND EARTH` Graduate of Architecture Office of the Principal Architect of Hungary Budapest, Hungary 2014 In 2014 a comprehensive exhibition was opened to present the work of the late Imre Makovecz, Hungary`s most famous architect. As a graduate architect working for the KKE Association, founded by Makovecz, I was part of the team who further developed the plans of his unfinished cathedral. The design was iterated through both CAD and paper models in order to find the perfect form and structure. The final, 3 meter high model was made and assembled

by Limes Model.

HANGOLA STOP. SIT DOWN. LOOK AROUND. TALK. RELAX. MAKE MUSIC Budapest 100 Festival project Architect Club, TU Budapest with the Faculty of Information Technology Budapest, Hungary 2013 The Architect Club is a self-organizing group of curious and proactive architect students, organizing professional programs for their peers and building relationship with various organizations. One example is the Club`s annual participation in the Budapest 100 Festival, the open weekend of 100-year-old buildings. The Hangola is an interactive, pop-up structure, inviting visitors to stop for a minute, to enjoy the old courtyard and thus, to activate the space. Each seat includes a built-in sensor, activating one tone / instrument of a soundtrack. The more people sit down, the more complete the music becomes.
