Planning for National Schools GTCPM Annual Apprentice Road Race 2018 Neil Huston takes top honours Relay Festival continues

Members of the planning committee meet to discuss a successful staging of the event. The planning committee of the National Schools’ Relay Festival met Tuesday as efforts to successfully host the third annual edition of this event that runs off next month (13th & 14th April) at the National Track and Field Facility (NATFC) are being doubled. The meeting was chaired by coordinator Nicholas Fraser and Allied Arts Unit Administrator Lorraine Barker-King, while other committee members in attendance included Aubrey Hutson, Trevor Williams, Gaafari Torrington and marketing coordinator Mondale Smith. Already several corporate citizens and government ministries have signaled their interest in supporting the event via sponsorship while others are being engaged. Some 16

secondary schools and eight tertiary institutions from the eleven education districts are expected to compete for top honours at the event began in 2016 as part of the Golden Jubilee celebrations. Registration forms have been issued to all Regional Education District offices and registration deadline on tomorrow. The relay festival will feature athletes from secondary and tertiary institutions to encourage them to remain active in the track and field disciplines. It is also used to discover new promising athletes. This is the only activity that specifically targets athletes at the tertiary institution level. Admission to the meet will be free of cost. Apprentice Neil Huston was the winner of the annual GuySuCo Training Centre six mile road race, which was held recently for apprentices and guest athletes. A total of 48 runners participated in the event which saw Huston winning in a time of 36 minutes and 52secs. The race began at Adventure on the Corentyne concluded in front of the apprentice hostel at Port Mourant also on the Corentyne. Trophies and medals were presented to

the top ten finishers. Present at the event and seeing the athletes on their way was Manager of the GTCPM Jainarine Sookpaul and Student Affairs Officer Levi Nedd. Speaking with the media, Coordinator Nedd said that the annual event is part of the apprentices’ extra-curricular activities at the institution. The event which was held at the Kennard’s Track at Bush Lot Farm entity saw Settling Star returning to winning ways with a thumping win in the feature E and Lower 7 furlongs race on Sunday. ishing Settling Star was settling any doubts that it had returned to top form. It accelerated down the homestretch to win with ease from a top notch field. The win was worth $700,000 and the Metro Office and Computer Supplies Trophy. Goodwill Boy placed second with front runner Storm Bird third and It’s My Choice fourth. The H and lower event, which had $300,000 and trophy available for the winner, saw a gate to pole win for TNT of the Nand Persaud Racing Stables. Bhojnarine Lallbachan grabbed two wickets and returned to hit a top score of 30 while Corwin Austin hit an unbeaten 28 to guide ‘D’ Division to a 7-wicket victory over ‘B’ Division when the Guyana Police Force (GPF), Commissioner of Police InterDivision and Department T20 tournament continued yesterday at Police Sports Club, ground, Eve Leary.

‘B’ Division batted first and lost the wickets of Philbert Wilburg (08), Hazlim George (01), Rondy David (01) and Kedar Amsterdam (14) with the score on 32-4.
