Businessman and social media commentator,GlennLallhasraisedconcerns over recent comments made by US AmbassadortoGuyana,NicoleTheriotwho said last week that Washington would be uneasy if Azruddin Mohamed wins the upcoming elections or is elected to parliament.
Last year, Mohamed, his father Nazar “Shell” Mohamed, their businesses, and government official Mae Thomas were sanctioned by the U.S. Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) The Mohamedsweresanctionedforallegedgold smuggling. When it announced the sanction OFACsaid:“Today’sactionunderscoresour commitment to holding accountable those who seek to exploit Guyana’s underdeveloped gold sector for personal gain,” said Under Secretary of the Treasury for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence Brian E. Nelson. It added” These actions were conducted in coordination with HomelandSecurityInvestigationsNewYork Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF) Strike Force, Diplomatic Security Service, Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Office of Intelligence –New York Operations, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Miami Field Office, with assistance from HSI Miami, CBP Miami and New York Field Offices, New York City Police Department Intelligence Bureau, and the Drug EnforcementAdministration.”
According to OFAC gold is one of Guyana’s main exports, but it remains a highly fractured industry with small-scale goldminingoperationsinGuyanaoccupying a majority share of the country’s gold production. “These small, family-owned businesses have informal relationships with largerpurchasersandtraderslikeMohamed’s Enterprise. Once mined, Guyanese gold is sold and traded throughout international markets, including the United States, Canada, the United Arab Emirates, and the EuropeanUnion,”OFAChadsaid.
In June 2025, Mohamed launched his political party, We Invest in Nationhood (WIN), which is one of six parties set to
contest the General and Regional Elections on September 1. “Yes, we are concerned. Anytime the US Department of Treasury OFACsanctionedindividualhasthepotential to become a member of government, that is concerningforus,”AmbassadorTheriottold reporters last week. Mohamed’s party has gained traction among Guyanese and would likelyposeabigchallengetothePPP/Cand theAPNU.
In one of his recent social media commentaries, Lall referenced that the current US President, Donald Trump was convicted on 34 felony charges and yet he waselectedbyhiscountry “Notaccused, not sanctioned, convicted in a court of law for fraud. Yet with all that, he ran for President and won,” Lall noted. He added: “President Lula of Brazil was jailed for corruption, released, ran for elections, and won. India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi was once sanctioned by the U.S, he still ran for electionsandwonbyalandslide.”
Lall even mentioned current President, Irfaan Ali, who he noted that before becoming President of Guyana, faced 19 criminalfraudchargestiedtolandgiveaways under Jagdeo. “He ran for office; the U.S. Embassy didn’t say a word back then. But,
Azruddin Mohamed, who hasn’t been charged, never been convicted of any crime in or out of Guyana, was simply sanctioned bytheU.S.TreasuryDepartment,notacourt and suddenly, the U.S. Ambassador to Guyana has a problem with him possibly sitting in parliament. Problem for who? Because it sure isn’t a problem for the Guyanesepeoplewhonevergotavoteonthe decisionsbeingmadeinthiscountry.”
“So, let’s get this straight: a convicted felon like Trump? No problem. A president with 19 fraud charges? No objection, a businessman with no conviction? suddenly, he’s too dangerous to sit in the National Assembly.? Wake up, Guyana. This isn’t about ethics, fair play or Justice—it’s about control,”Lalldeclared.
He noted that Ambassador Theriot, like those before her, “clearly doesn’t want any newpoliticalforcerisinginthisland—unless it wears red, green, or yellow Why?” “Becausethosethreepartiesarecontrollable, already compromised. They have signed away our oil, our gold, our lands, and our future—and in return, what they get to hand Guyanese, acashgrantandtokeeptheirvisa intact. And anyone who dares to challenge that arrangement becomes a threat A problem, andadangertotheirplan.”

One of the main functions of commercial banks is to handle huge sums of money for an array of customers, ranging from widows and pensioners to millionaires and billionaires. With all that having been said, there is a question that hangsovertheheadofeverycitizenofGuyana. It is a questionthat’stesting, aswellastimelyandominous, given whoandwhatareinvolved. Thereareconstitutionalrights, and the involvement of a sanctioned Guyanese citizen in pivotal national elections. DEAREDITOR,
The recent statement by United StatesAmbassadorNicoleD.Theriotis a direct and brazen assault on the sovereignty of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana. Let us not fool ourselves.
This is not merely about Azruddin Mohamed though he stands at the forefront of the conversation. This is about every Guyanese and our right under our Constitution to determine whoisfittorunforthehighestofficein the land. That Constitution is not some decorativeparchment.Itisthesupreme lawoftheland, anditmustberespected by us and by any who reside within or engagewiththisRepublic.

I take this nation back to 2005 and recall the words of former Chancellor andAttorneyGeneralKeithMassiahSC inhisminorityreportduringtheGajraj Commission of Inquiry into the phantom squad killings. In the early 2000s, while this nation wrestled with the consequences of lawlessness and extra-judicial actions, Massiah made clear and timeless what justice demands.
He said: “Killings however reasonableandexpedientintheopinion of many persons of goodwill ought not to be countenanced. Even the alleged serialkillerthepersistentrapistandthe paedophile detestable as those pariahs are enjoying the fundamental right to a fair hearing and the full protection of due process ” What this learned gentlemanwastellingusisthateventhe most detestable among us enjoy the fundamental right to a fair hearing and the full protection of due process. It is also no secret the family has retained legal representation to address the legal battles here and abroad. Let the legal process take its course We must not demand the protection of rights only when it suits us.
Justice is not justice when applied selectively Further, if there are other allegations or infractions surrounding
the Mohameds, let them be dealt with throughtheproperlegalchannels. That is what a civilized society demands. Due process, rule of law and equal treatment.

The USA Appears to Have a Horse in the Race in the Upcoming Elections in Guyana
DEAREDITOR,
History has a way of reminding us that not all alliances are built on transparency or mutual respect. As Guyanaedgesclosertoitsnextgeneral election, whispers of foreign involvement are growing louder—and with good reason. The United States, under the familiar guise of promoting “democracy”and“stability,”appearsto be showing a clear preference for the current administration of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) And that should concern every citizen who believes in the sovereignty and selfdeterminationofGuyana. We would be foolish to ignore the patterns.Across LatinAmerica and the Caribbean, U.S. foreign policy has consistently favored regimes that align with its economic and geopolitical interests, often at the expense of democratic integrity and human rights. From the CIA-backed overthrow of JacoboÁrbenzinGuatemala(1954),to thesupportforChile’sdictatorAugusto Pinochet (1973–1990), the U.S. has repeatedly demonstrated a willingness
tointerfere, manipulate, andeventopple governments in its quest for control. ThenthereisHaiti,Grenadaandothers.
Guyana is no exception to this calculus especially now, as oil revenuereshapesournationaldestiny
TherecentcozyingupbetweenU.S. diplomatic representatives and the PPP government, combinedwithsoftsilence on transparency issues, institutional erosion, and concerns raised by civil society, raisesredflags.Itisdifficultto ignore the increasing presence of U.S.backed “development” initiatives and private contractors across Guyana’s infrastructure, oil, and social sectors. These are not acts of charity; they are strategic investments calculated moves to entrenchAmerican influence in Guyana’s political and economic future. This apparent alignment raises criticalquestions.IsU.S.supportforthe PPP truly rooted in democratic values—or is it driven by the allure of ExxonMobil profits, compliant governance, and convenient silence in the face of rising inequality and weakenedinstitutions?
In Guyana, elections must be free not just from domestic coercion, but fromforeigninterferenceinallitssubtle forms. Guyanese people deserve the right to determine their future without the shadow of external influence—no matterhowdiplomaticallyitisdressed.
Let us not forget: the United States has long supported dictators when it suited their interest. They supported Trujillo in the Dominican Republic, Batista in Cuba, the Duvaliers in Haiti, and Noriega in Panama. They armed and advised brutal death squads in El Salvador and Nicaragua. When the façade of “stability” benefitsAmerican corporations, morality and sovereignty oftenfallbythewayside.
We must not allow Guyana to be reduced to a PR campaign for oil contractsanddiplomatichandshakes. Guyanaisnotforsale.Andwemust remain vigilant to ensure our future is decided by our people not by boardroomsinWashingtonvialobbying firmsandlobbyists.

PPPC government good for regional security?
DEAREDITOR,
The recent letter in the press by President Ramotar in which he states, “let us redoubleourcalltotheU.S. to end its criminal blockade against the children and people of Cuba”, begs the question as to whether a procommunist / communist PPPC government in Guyana is good for regional security? The history of our country helps answer this question. It was the opinion oftheU.S.anditsalliesthata c o m m u n i s t P P P government, whether democratically elected or not, wasadangertoregional security
Thus, the prevention of Jaganfrombeingabletotake thePresidencyandthedelay i n o u r n a t i o n ’ s Independence These are factsthatmostGuyaneseare aware of and President Ramotar who has been in Guyanese politics for quite sometimeshouldappreciate the sensitive nature of the position he continually
pushes on behalf of the PPPC.
Mr Kit Nascimento also reminded us of the swift action taken by the U.S. during the Presidency of President Burnham He stated in his recent letter in the press that “Long ago, Forbes Burnham for differentreasons, undervery different circumstances, when I was a memberof his Cabinet, poked his finger into the eyes of Uncle Sam and Mr Henry Kissinger, thenSecretaryofStateofthe U.S.Government,madehim and the people of Guyana pay the price by ensuring economic collapse of Mr Burnham’s government, when all that Mr Burnham haddonewastoseektodefy the imposition of American and Soviet imperialism as a non-aligned country We learned a bitter lesson then and we should be much wisernow”.
This is good advice that PresidentRamotarandother leaders of the PPPC should
follow Consistently presenting an antagonist perspectivetowardstheU.S. during a time of extremely high tensions between the U.S. and Russia does not help Guyana’ national security and economic development Regional securityfortheU.S.willtake precedence over other considerations as the war with Russia and Ukraine continues and the tensions with China continue to escalate. The ABCE countries must take note of the abuse of power in Guyana
DEAREDITOR,

The last time I checked, USA does not sanction individuals for political involvement or politicalassociation.Guyana is not a dictatorship; people arefreetoassociatewithany partyorideology Andsoare Americans who can freely associatewithanyparty Americans who do business with the Mohamed’s can be sanctioned. Non-Americans who do business with the Mohamed’s within Guyana cannot be sanctioned. They are subjected to sanctions if they engage in cross border business with USA companies Therefore, Demerara Bank should not have cancelled the bank accounts of individuals basedonpersonalorpolitical association.

The electorate must decide if this is a risk worth taking.

T h e C o o p e r a t i v e RepublicansofGuyana
The individuals whose accounts are cancelled are not doing business with the Mohamed’s. And even if they do local business, they are not subject to sanctions. They are simply associating with the party founded by
Azruddin Mohamed The American government has sanctioned the Mohamed’s for not paying taxes to Guyana on gold shipments. The Mohamed’s did not violate USA laws. But the USA sanctioned the Mohamed’s. It is curious how and why they are sanctioned The sanctions came about after Azruddin announced an interest in politics Who in Guyana requestedthesanctions? The behavior of the individual is very Putinesque. He is a vindictivedictator.Thesame individual has directed Demerara Bank to cancel accountsofsomeindividuals politically connected with Azruddin That is not democracy The ABCE countries must take note of the abuse of power in Guyana. Also, the elections cannot be considered to be freeandfairifpeoplearenot freetoassociatewithaparty of their choice The individualwhoispursuinga policy of sanctions by the USAandlocallybythebank must himself be sanctioned bytheABCEcountries.

Todd flays PPP for attacks on professionals
...says Govt. selectively applies the law
Attorney-at-law
a n d A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) candidate, Dr Dexter Todd, has publicly defended his professional integrity following criticisms from the ruling People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C), which he claims labelled him a “mediocre lawyer”.
Addressingsupportersat an APNU public meeting held in Bagotville, West Bank Demerara, on Saturday, Dr Todd, a newcomer to the political arena, used his first political addresstospeakonissuesof injustice, victimization, and politicalretaliation.
During his remarks, Dr Todd recalled what he described as a personal attack by Vice President BharratJagdeo, whoreferred to him as a “mediocre
lawyer” during his weekly Thursday press conference.
Todd believes this insult stemmed from his legal challenges against the government, particularly his involvement in the case of 11-year-oldAdrianaYounge.
“One man called me on his Thursday’s programme, he calledmeamediocrelawyer IdarethePPP/Ctobringthe qualificationsofanyoftheir members, fromthePresident come right down,” Todd said. “In this country, if you are not politically correct withyourmessage, thenyou are an enemy of the governmentandanenemyof thePPP/Candthereforethey come after you. It was an insult.”
Dr Todd defended his q u a l i f i c a t i o n s b y highlighting his extensive international legal experience. “I coordinate forensics for the entire
continent of Africa, over 54 countries.Afewweeksago,I returned from Cameroon, and in a few weeks I will be in Gambia I sit with ministers of government, police commissioners, and I bring experts in legal forensicresearch,”hestated. “Because I tell them the truth, they (PPP/C) don’t likethat.”
He warned of a growing trend in Guyana where professionalsaretargetedfor expressing independent views “The thing about professionals in this country istheminuteyougooutside, qualify yourself, and come back, you’reexpectedtoshut your mouth unless you’re with them Otherwise, they’re coming after you,” he said. Dr Todd assured supporters that such suppressionwouldnotoccur under an APNU-led government. “We must

ThePanAmerican

Organization (PAHO) and Resolve to Save Lives have renewed their commitment to
enhancing epidemic preparedness and response capacities throughout Latin AmericaandtheCaribbean.
This strengthened collaboration follows the recent signing of a comprehensive Framework Agreementbetweenthetwo organizations.
The newly established Framework Agreement
creates a regional partnership dedicated to implementing and institutionalizing the Early Action Review (EAR) methodology using the globally recognized 7-1-7 target. These metrics are crucial for evaluating the timeliness of outbreak detectionandresponse.
“7-1-7” represents the first real-time, end-to-end assessment of a country’s speed in detecting and containing infectious diseasethreats.
It establishes clear objectives: detection within seven days, notification within one day, and responsewithinsevendays.
The simplicity, focus, and clarityofthesemetricshave led to their inclusion in the Pandemic Fund’s results framework and their increasing adoption worldwide.
In May 2025, PAHO signed an MoU with Resolve to Save Lives and this renewed commitment was recently highlighted during the visit of Ms Amanda McClelland, SeniorVicePresidentforthe PreventEpidemicsprogram atResolvetoSaveLives,to PAHO Headquarters in Washington, D.C. During her visit, Ms. McClelland met with Dr Ciro Ugarte, Director of PAHO’s Health Emergencies Department, to strategically plan the implementation of the agreement and explore avenues for deeper collaboration.
T h r o u g h t h i s partnership, PAHO will s p e a r h e a d t h e implementation of regional initiatives, offer technical support to countries, and develop training materials on the implementation of themethodology The Organization will alsopromotetheintegration of detection, notification
respect professionals, we willrespectopinions, andwe will use them for the betterment of our country,” headded.
Dr Todd went on to accuse the PPP/C of systematically undermining professionals and their contributions, claiming the party’s broader motive is to establish a one-party state. “They don’t respect professionals They don’t respect professional opinions.Theyseekinevery attempt, to undermine professionalsinthiscountry, because their motive is to create a one party state. If you’re not PPP, then you’re notright,”hedeclared.
In addition to concerns o v e r p r o f e s s i o n a l victimization, Dr Todd also criticisedthePPP/Cforwhat hedescribedastheselective application of the law. He cited the case involving Local Government Minister Nigel Dharamlall, who was accusedofrapinga16-yearold Amerindian girl, as an example of unequal legal treatment. “There will be no one Guyana when one of themisallegedtohaveraped anAmerindian girl andshe is hidden from the lawyer, fromeverybodywhowanted

PPP running scared
The PPP is running scared.Butit’snotscaredof the opposition. Not really It’s not even scared of the small parties The independents. The aspiring politicians with two Facebook followers and a dream No, the PPP is terrifiedofshadows.Andit’s looking in all the wrong places.Likeamanchecking under the bed for burglars whilethethiefwalksoutthe frontdoor.
ThePPP’sparanoiaisoff thecharts.Itsmellsdefeatin the breeze. Sees sabotage in every side glance. It has become authoritarian in its instincts Intolerant of dissent.Hostiletoscrutiny Ask the private media. They’ll tell you. Sections of the press that once defended democracy now find themselves on the PPP’s blacklist. Why? For doing theirjobs.Becauseevenfair criticism now counts as treason in Freedom House’s book.
But it wasn’t the media that hurt the PPP It wasn’t thecritics.Thebloggers.The letter-writers.ItwasthePPP itself. The party created its own monster And the name of that monster? The revitalized PNCR. Yes. The PNCR. A party that was on lifesupportafter2020.Until Bharrat Jagdeo decided to host weekly press conferences. He thought he was weakening the opposition.Whatheactually did was give it CPR. Jagdeo draggedthePNCRbackinto relevance. He gave them visibility Gave their arguments air Week after week. Clip after clip. Every
soundbitemadeitswayback into the PNCR base. And theylappeditup. The angry base became angrier as Jagdeo became more belligerent The demoralized base became energized And the supporters in PNCR strongholds, from being demoralized became galvanized. In the last local government elections, they didn’trollover Theyheldon to their municipalities and did so handsomely. One municipality was swept clean by the PNCR. And Jagdeo has only himself to blame.Hispressconferences wereagifttotheopposition. Buthekeepsgiving.Hecan’t stop. Won’t stop. And it’s costingthePPPdearly
Now the PPP is in a panic. Again. The PNCR is no longer in the wilderness. It’s back in the game. So every single vote counts. And this is where the PPP’s paranoia gets worse Suddenly, everyone is a threat.ThePPPisgoingafter all potential threats. With venom. Becausetherealthreatis not the small fry It’s not the lone voices or the third parties. It’s the people with money Yes, the PPP’s biggestthreatisnotpolitical. It’s financial. It’s the PPP’s own backers. The business elite. The same ones who fund their campaigns. The sameoneswhosmileintheir faces. Shake their hands. Toast their achievements Then write cheques for the other side Because the
business class doesn’t believeinloyalty Itbelieves in insurance. And when the race looks close, they hedge their bets. They prepare two envelopes. The bigger one goestothePPP Thesmaller one to the PNCR. Just in case.Theywanttobeonthe right side. Whichever side wins. It’s smart. It’s cynical. It’s business And it’s dangerous.
Because that second envelope could make all the difference. It can pay for a g r o u n d c a m p a i g n . B

That’swherethebetrayal lies.Notinsmallparties.Not the independents Not in critics.Notinthemedia.But in the manicured hands of their own financiers. The ones who sip champagne at statefunctions.
Then fund the next campaigntounseatthem. It’s poetic.ThePPPfedthetiger Nowitwatchesthetigerfeed the enemy And there’s nothingitcando.Becauseit needs the tiger too. Because you can’t fight the business class.Youcan’texposethem. Can’t drag them through the mud. Because you still need them Still need their cheques Still need their

Old heads on new failures

It doesn’t matter, whether biological ones or political ones. Just a set of weaklings, men and women of no backbone, no cojones. I could hear Burnham; I am not sparing the women. I could see Jagan shaking his headruefully

It acknowledges, however, that the industry has been suffering by declining global sugar prices, reducedcompetitiveness, therising cost of production, and the shift toward sugar substitutes In response, the party promises to implement mechanisation and

To develop the sugar industry, WIN proposes revising the NationalCaneFarmingCommittee Act of 1965, increasing sugar workers’ wages, and adopt and implement full mechanisation of theindustry Aspartofitseffortsto

Additionally, the party promises to establish a backend refinery for Albion estate and introduc
technology It also aims to reconfigure Rose Hall as a sugar by-productcentre,andprovideland to the tillers as a constitutional guarantee.
In a bold initiative, the WIN party proposes to implement a programme that will gradually leaseortransferatleast10percent of cane lands to interested cane farming groups, under the oversight of the National Cane FarmingCommittee(NCFC).
Thepartyalsoplanstoconduct feasibility studies to assess land suitability and market demand for alternative crop farming Additionally, it intends to offer incentives, grants, and tax cuts to encourage investment in crop diversification.
Meanwhile, thetwoothermajor parties, the PPP/C and the APNU, have focused their plans for the sugar estates and production on diversifying GuySuCo beyond sugar and its by-products, including ventures into other crop cultivation and housing development.
TheAPNU, led by presidential candidate Aubrey Norton, has proposed reducing GuySuCo’s reliance on sugar and repurposing its resources for economic activitieslikeagricultureandhouse construction. Norton stated during a recent interview on GlobeSpan24x7, that GuySuCo needstoberestructuredtostandon its own without subsidies. Meanwhile, the PPP/C government, led by President Irfaan Ali, has already announced plans to diversify GuySuCo’s operations to include crops like rice,corn,andcassava.Atthe77th anniversaryoftheEnmoreMartyrs, Ali emphasised the need to reimagine GuySuCo as a hub of rural economic development. He highlightedGuySuCo’spotentialin

The government also plans to co-invest with sugar workers in new ventures and convert 3,000 additional hectares of land for mechanisationin2025,buildingon the 5,000 hectares already converted.
However, the president’s proposal to diversify the sugar company comes as GuySuCo continues to operate at a loss. The APNU+AFC administration had closed four major sugar estates –Skeldon, Wales, Enmore and Rose Hall, citing unsustainable operations and poor cash flow In opposition, the PPP/C had vowed to revive the industry, and upon returning to power, they injected billions of dollars into the sector However, profitability remains subtle.
Inthe2025nationalbudget,the governmentallocated$13billionto GuySuCo. Finance Minister Dr Ashni Singh projected that the sugar sector would grow by 115.4 per cent this year, with a target of producing 101,000 metric tonnes. Hispredictionwasmadefollowing anotherdeclineinsugarproduction in2024.
