...Glenn Lall says backdoor deals, injustices fueling civil unrest
Guyana is enduring an excruciating pain that, if not swiftly addressed, could see the country “burning inside out.”
This is according to Publisher of Kaieteur News and human rights activist, Glenn Lall. He said Guyana needs a justice system that deliversandleaderswhowill stop repeating failures and beginattackingrootcauses.
During his radio programme “the Glenn Lall Show,” Friday evening, Lall addressedtheprotestactions which erupted in Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo following the traumatic
death of 11-year-old Adrianna Younge at the Double Day Hotel on April 24,andtheshootingdeathof the two Linden youths by police, 21-year-old Ronaldo Petersand32-year-oldKeon Fogenay, on April 7 and 8 respectively
The discovery of Younge's remains in the hotel's pool sparked a massive protest at Tuschen on Thursday The exercise sawtheburningofroadsand tires, and the fiery destruction of the hotel and thehomeofthehotelowner
Younge had visited the hotel with relatives on
Wednesday, and was discovered missing around 14:00 hrs. Despite repeated appealsforpolicetoconduct a thorough search of the premises, family members claimed their cries went unanswered. The GPF also later admitted to issuing an inaccurate statement which claimedthatthechildleftthe hotel in a red and black Toyota Raum the evening shewentmissing. Relatives remained adamant that little Adrianna had not left the hotel as surveillance footage reviewedfromaneighbour's camera only showed her entering.
On the morning ofApril 8,theminingtownofLinden descendedintofierychaosas well, after news of Peters' deathspread.Residentswere livid over the death caused byapoliceofficer, whothey said, should have been protecting him. The police sergeant had claimed Peters was wanted for rape, and in anattempttoapprehendhim, hisfirearmwentoff, causing the fatal shot But surveillancefootageshowed the police officer running after the young father. Eyewitnesses said they also sawPetersbeingthrowninto

Itwasduringthatprotest action that Fogenay, a passerby, wasshotintheeye by another police officer Eyewitnesses stated that theysawtherankpullouthis gunandfireitintothecrowd where Fogenay was, killing him.
According to Lall, what unfoldedinTuschen, wasnot a random act, but the eruption of a longsimmering national crisis, finally giving voice to itself—"a deep, boiling, and dangerous pressure that's been building beneath the surface of this land, far too longthatisbeingcompletely ignored.”
“People are no longer just upset They're not simply angry They are fed up Disgusted Exhausted andFrustrated.Andyes, they are crying out, acting out, andbawlingoutforhelp. But no one in leadership is listening. Aside from being forcedtolivehandtomouth in one of the wealthiest countriesonearthtoday, too much of injustices are flourishing all across Guyana,”hetoldlisteners.
He said the deaths of Younge and the two young
men in Linden should never become symbols of failure. He maintained they should have been protected. Lall said if the system was workinginthewayitshould, theyallmayhavebeenalive.
He said the situation in Linden and Tuschen are not isolatedevents.Accordingto him, theyarewarningsigns.
“They are cries from a broken nation. I feel it. I see it.IheariteverydaywhenI speak with ordinary Guyanese—thereisnomore joy, no more hope, no more trust Because the very people who were supposed to protect us have become ourbiggestbetrayers.”

Serve and protect who?
Last week the government was quick to defend the discreditedGuyanaPoliceForcefollowingthedamning assessment by the United States Government of that organisation's ability to fight transnational crimes as contained in its 2025International Narcotics Control StrategyReport(INCSR).
The usually loquacious Attorney General, Anil Nandlall spared no time in regaling this nation that this country's credentials as a fighter against money laundering and drug trafficking were recently “scrupulously examined over a period, from September 2022 to June 2024, in a mutual evaluation exercise conducted by the most premier regulatory body in this hemisphere–theCaribbeanFinancialActionTaskForce (CFATF)” He said in this process, “every aspect of Guyana's AML/CFT framework was critically scrutinised, including our legislative framework, our administrative processes, our investigative capabilities, andourlawenforcementandprosecutorialcapacities.”
His comment was in direct response to these paragraphs in the 2025 International Narcotics Control Strategy Report (INCSR), where the US Department of State noted that: ”Despite growing oil wealth and the government's increased efforts, the public sector –including law enforcement and customs officials –remains underpaid. Coupled with a lack of adequate resources and shortcomings in the legal system, this allows traffickers to exploit government systems and moveillicitdrugsthroughGuyana.”
The report added: “Corruption within law enforcement, bribery, and nepotism in the public sector andpoliticalentitiesfurthercomplicatethefightagainst drug trafficking.” The report stated: “Authorities often drop charges or never file them and do not conduct serious investigations; traffickers are able to evade prosecution. Additionally, the economic appeal of the drugtradeinGuyana, withitshighpovertyrateandlowpaying public sector jobs, leads individuals to become involved in illicit activities and hinders efforts to curb trafficking. In two separate incidents in July, four GDF officers were charged with trafficking a total of 213 kilogramsofcannabis.“

The system, including the police and Government, failed this family
DearEditor,
Following the Easter celebration, our nation has been grappling with a series of tragic events that have claimed the lives of several women, including an innocent eleven-year-old girl. The brutal murders of a
wife, mother-in-law, and sister-in-law,allegedlyatthe hands of a husband, son-inlaw, and brother-in-law; are shocking These are not normal times in our country It appears we are wrestling against principalities and wickedness in high places.
serveandprotectthem.ConfidenceintheGuyanaPolice Force among citizens has always been low.The Guyana Police Force over the years has been embroiled in numerous allegations of corruption, including involvement in extrajudicial killings, collaboration with criminal gangs, selling driver's licences and firearms, executing political instructions, facilitating the transshipment of illegal narcotics, and covering up murders, particularlythoseinvolvingwealthyGuyanese, politicians, and the politically-connected. Financial crimes within the Force further compound these egregious acts. Such actions fundamentally undermine theintegrityandtrustworthinessofthePoliceForce.

However, God has confused the enemy's camp and is working in favor of the family
Ihavebeenreflectingon the events surrounding the untimely and tragic death of young Adrianna Younge Firstly, I publicly commend the resilience of her parents, family, friends, and the community to which she belonged for their tireless efforts to find her This was not about politics; it was about humanity The entire

Itisclearthatthesystem, including the Guyana Police Force and, by extension, the Government, failed this family Editor,Ihavespoken with many people who are outragedatwhathappenedto Adrianna, and rightfully so. This entire situation has brought tears and anguish. The lingering question remains- Why Adrianna Younge? And for what reason?
WhiletheGuyanaPolice Force is mandated to serve and protect, they failed to assist in locating Adrianna.
Instead, they left her at the mercyofherkillersandtheir enablers. Disturbingly, they seemed more intent on offering protection to suspects than on saving an innocentlife.
Adrianna'sdeathbrought backpainfulmemoriesofthe tragicdeathsofyoungIsaiah and Joel Henry; whose bodieswerefoundmutilated, and of young Naresh Singh. Sadly, the system also failed their families. The Henry family, in particular, was tormented, harassed by law enforcement, and endured theimprisonmentofafamily member who remains incarcerated. Their mothers died without receiving justicefortheirsons.
Many believe that Commander Assistant Commissioner of Police K. Mandall failed the Younge familyandmisledthenation. Such a person should not hold a leadership position. DearEditor,
As Labour Week kicks off, withpreparationsforthe March and Rally on Thursday, May 1st, it's important to reflect on the significant contributions of the Labour Movement to Guyana's social progress
One hundred and twenty years ago, in 1905, a young waterfront worker, Hubert Nathaniel Critchlow, began organising workers for change.
14 years later, at the age of 35, his efforts led to the formation of the first trade
unioninGuyana, theBritish Guiana Labour Union (BGLU), renamed the Guyana Labour Union (GLU) This institution predatedpoliticalpartiesand laid the foundation for the country's labour and social justiceframework.
The Labour Movement's achievements are numerous and transformative. Among the most notable is the introduction of universal adult suffrage (one-manone-vote),whichgaveevery eligibleGuyanesecitizenthe right to vote, regardless of
privilege This milestone empowered the people, shifting the political landscape and providing the electorate with the most p o t e n t w e a p o n o f democracy:theirvote.

DearEditor,

What!Heistellingushe wants to see the footage instead of telling us he looked at the footage and it confirms what is being told. So, the Vice President has not seen the video Apparently, the Minister of Home Affairs, Robeson Bennhasnotseeniteitheror Bharatwouldhaverequested andlookedatit.
This was told to the parents and those who were demandingthepolicesearch the hotel The unfolding factsrevealthatthechildwas stillinthehotelsoobviously the story about footage was blatantlyfalse.
It would be logical that for some reason the police did not want the hotel to be searched.Itisalsoclearthat had the police searched the hotel the child may have beenfoundandwouldstillbe alivetoday
ItisridiculousfortheVP to say he wants to see the footage which by now he wouldknowisnon-existent. He should have been telling

Theeventsthatunfolded including the tale by the policethatthechildwasseen somewhere else were to me pellucidthepoliceconspired to prevent the discovery of whatwastakingplaceinthe Hotel. So, we have a Prima Facie case of conspiracy to commit or aiding and abetting the murder of the child.

this is not to condemn all police.
Not long ago I wrote a lettertothepressurgingthat salariesofthepolicemustbe revised upwards. They have a lot of explaining to do. The death of the child may very well be because of their actions.

Equallyimportantarethe gains related to freedom of a s s o c i a t i o n T h i s fundamental right allows citizens to choose their allies, from trade unions to political and religious groups, without fear of reprisal. It's this right that ensures employers cannot arbitrarily set wages or impose harsh conditions without the consultation of organized labour. From maternity benefits to occupational safety and the establishment of the National Insurance Scheme (NIS), these social protections continue to uphold the dignity of workersacrossthecountry
The Labour Movement also made crucial strides in housing development Initiatives like TUCville in GeorgetownandTUCbergin Berbice, alongside other projectsdevelopedbyunions such as the GLU and GMWU, have provided housing for thousands of Guyaneseworkers.
Labour built this nation, andmorethananyinstitution outside of government, it laid the groundwork for the socialjusticeframeworkthat ensures equal rights for all.
But recent years have seen the movement struggle against a backdrop of corruption, greed, andalack ofrespectforhumancapital. Politicians have become disconnected from the people'sneeds, distractedby powerstrugglesandignoring their responsibility to work towardsthecollectivegood.
While labour remains a key social partner in

governance, enshrinedinthe Constitution at Articles 38 and 149C, it is increasingly marginalised in today's political climate. Too often, the focus is on political parties, rather than on the core issue of ensuring fair livingconditionsforworkers and families Labour's struggle transcends party politics. Regardless of who isinpower, theissuesremain the same: decent wages, soci
, preservationofhumanrights
and dignity, and a commitment to national development.
Itistimeforustorealize a truly inclusive democracy in our political system
Labour demands key reforms to ensure greater collaboration between government and opposition forthebenefitofallcitizens. Specifically, we call for increasing the number of votes needed to pass certain Bills in the National
Assembly to foster collaboration between government and opposition, ensuring broader consensus onkeyissues.
The exploitation of oil andgasresources, muchlike the handling of past natural resources such as bauxite, gold, diamonds, andforestry, must be carefu
scrutinized.Guyana'swealth from these resources should not be an external windfall that leaves our citizens behind.
We must guard against situations where Guyanese are forced to settle for "crumbs" while foreign interestsreapthebulkofthe benefits. It is time for a new approach that guarantees substantial benefits for locals, including addressing the concerning disparity in wages between local and foreign workers doing the samejob.
Politics in Guyana should not be an endless partisan battle that wears down the people and stifles cooperation.Labourcallsfor a return to meaningful parliamentary engagement. Politicians must bring their issues to the National Assembly, debate them, and work through differences in a constructive manner Our people deserve nothing less than a transparent and effectivegovernment.
To GECOM, we express concernwiththefailure, thus far, toprovidetothisnation, free, fair and credible electionsasevidencedbythe refusal to provide a clean voterslistandbiometrics.

WoodMac warns 1.2M barrels of oil at risk if prices fall to US$50
Theglobaloilindustryis onalertasconsultancyWood Mackenzie warns that up to 1.2 million barrels of daily production could be at risk by 2026 if crude oil prices falltoUS$50perbarrel.
This will be driven largely by increased United States output under President Donald Trump's “drillbabydrill”agenda.Ina new report titled Global Upstream Trade War Impacts, Wood Mackenzie outlined what Trump's policymeansforproduction, investmentandcosts.
Head of Upstream Analysis, Fraser McKay, said that the global oil industry is bracing for a crisis. McKay said, “Since crude prices dropped below US$60/bbl for the first time since 2021, driven by concernaboutweakeningoil demand following US President Trump's tariff policies and planned supply increases from OPEC+ for May, producers have been readying themselves to respond in case prices fall further.”
McKay noted that crude price drop will have an impact on upstream spend.
He added that oil and gas companysharepricesfellby an average of 15% from 28 Marchto8April.
“ W h i l e t h e U S administration targets both lowerpricesand'Drill,baby, drill', instead what would happen is 'Delay, baby, delay'.Wenowexpectglobal upstream development spendtofallyear-on-yearfor thefirsttimesince2020,”he stated.
Moreover, McKay noted that current oil prices hurt but don't wound the upstream sector He explained,“US$65/bbldents marginsbutisn'tlowenough to force dramatic budget or development plan changes. Speaking at the 2025 Guyana Energy Conference and Supply Chain Expo, Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo had said he is “not worried” about the US' ramped-up drilling policy flooding the market with cheapoil.
“So, I'm not worried too much about the new environment or the US positioninrelationtotheoil andgasindustryandwhether it would flood the market withcheapoil,”Jagdeosaid, adding, “And if the prices come down, as President Trump wants the price to come down, then it would also make some of the existing operations in the United States, particularly with fracking, it may make themnotfeasible.”

HeadofUpstream Analysis, Fraser McKay
Jagdeo supported his unbothered comment by stating that American oil giant, ExxonMobil Corporation, who is operatinginGuyanathrough its subsidiary ExxonMobil Guyana Limited (EMGL) has recently submitted its plans to have a seventh and eightprojectapprovedbythe Guyanesegovernment.
Jagdeofurtherexplained why he's not worried about Trump's policy, “because Exxon has just started, submittedthedocumentsfor the approval process to start
our seventh and an eighth project They were expandingcapexinGuyana, the United States of America, in spite of what President Trump has said, andI'msurethattheyintend to make the regulatory environment more favourable to the growth of theoilandgasindustryinthe United States of America, butwebelievethatyou'renot goingtohaveamajorsupply responsetothat.”

He went on to state that Exxonstudiestheoilmarket.
“Theyprobablyknowtheoil markets more than any government official, and they're willing to expand theirproductionhere, clearly they see in the future a demand for fossil fuel, and they believe that in Guyana, we have a unique opportunity to supply that market,lowbreak-evencost, the quality of our food is great, so I'm not worried about it,” the Vice President said.
Moreover, Jagdeo said that he believes that the demand for fossil fuel will remain “relatively high” as the growth in demand for fossil fuel will not be displaced in a “major way” byrenewableenergy Nevertheless, the Vice President expressed support forthegrowthoftheindustry in Guyana He also attributed this to the rate at which the government has beenapprovingprojects. However, he highlighted thatthegovernmentwillnot put all of its eggs in one basket.
EMGLis the operator of the prolific Stabroek Block which is estimated to hold 11.6billionbarrelsofoil.To date, Exxon has received governmentapprovalforsix projects in that block, and hastheaimofproducing1.3 millionbarrelsofoildailyby 2030 Currently, oil production offshore Guyana is over 600,000 barrels per day (bpd) from just 3 projects. It happens with every a d m i n i s t r a t i o n i n Guyana like clockwork, like termites in a wooden cupboard or relatives during mango season The governmentgetselected, and outcomesthebums.
Not the homeless, mind you, but a more evolved species: the Political Parasitus Maximus. These are men with heavy portfolios and appetites that defy physics. They don't walk into your life; they ooze.
Now some of these persons, not all, believe that once they get a government post, they've been knighted into the Order of the Eternal Freeness Suddenly, your table becomes their table, your party becomes their party, and your bottle of Grey Goose becomes their birthright.
Some of them walk into yourbusinessandbecauseof theirpositionandstatus, feel they can pick up what they want, have you bag it and walk out without you accepting payment Mind youmostofthemdonotask forittobegivenfreely They do not demand a discount. You just wait until they ask “Howmuch?”andforyouto say, “It is oaky” – the euphemismforfree.
But some of the bums alsolikefreedrinksandfood – and not necessarily at wedding houses They've perfected the art of appearing just as the cork is about to pop or the stewed chicken is being served, lurking near buffet tables like political apparitions, whispering “small piece fuh taste” while securing a heapingplatethatcouldfeed a battalion. These are not
youraveragemoochers;they are tacticians of the highest order, crashing birthday parties, anniversaries, even funerals if the menu's right—anywhere generosity is mistaken for hospitality, and the word “contribution” is treated like a foreign language.
The other night, I'm out with friends, having what I believed was a private drink—though in Guyana, privacy is a theoretical concept, like proper urban planning or affordable air conditioning.
We're sipping quietly, avoiding politics and existential dread, when in slides this human barnacle.
No invitation, no warning—just pulls up a chair with the confidence of a man who thinks “split the bill” is an attack on democracy.
Nobody called him. Nobodypouredhimadrink.
But there he was, summoning the waiter like he was knighted. Orders a d r i n k , t h e n s o m e food—expensive food too, likeprawnsgrowninPerrier
And then, with the shamelessness of a man
raised entirely by government per diems, he laughs and orders another drink. Just for himself. Not even a “what you guys having?” the bare minimum of social parasitism!
I politely informed the waiter that the gentleman at our table is what we call in the business an interloper, and his culinary expedition must be paid for from his owntreasury Igetup, tossa final sip of my rum like it's the last act of Macbeth, and walkedout.

The truth is, Guyana's governments are bipartisan whenitcomestofreeloaders. PPP, APNU, AFC it doesn't matter the letters. Within the ranks of each of them, there are spongers. Some habits never die. Now with Trump's tariffs, some businesses are beginning to prepare for Christmas before the tariffs and the anticipated recessions kicks in And while the businesses are seeking to mitigate the inevitable fallout, the bums are preparing for their favoriteseason:Giftmas.

Conscience of the nation is alive and well
The University of Guyana (UG) saidthishasbeen a "horribilis mensis" (horrible month) in relation to interpersonal violence against the most vulnerable in Guyana as it referenced the recent death of 11-yearold Adrianna Younge who was found dead in a swimming pool at the Double Day Hotel at Tuschen, East Bank EssequibolastThursday
UG said while all deaths are terrible and rob families andthenationoflovedones, and their presence and potential contributions, the death of children are unthinkable and heartwrenching This is even more so, given the circumstances unfolding in therecentheartbreakingcase of Younge. “The university notes that the conscience of the nation is alive and well, through the actions of public-spirited citizens, some of whom are UG alumni, students, and staff working quietly on the ground, along with other organisations, to facilitate respectful grieving support, trauma counselling, legal
and policy guidance, among other interventions within the context of the university's training and community outreach portfolio.”
The country's premier tertiary institution said it stands ready to render any additional support needed within its resources and abilities, including providing counselling and medical services to its own staff and students who have been directly impacted. It also acknowledges the implementation of the new SOPsfor“MissingPersons,” which we think of as the “Adrianna Alert" system, instituted by the leadership of the GPF over the last 24 hours, asanimportantinitial response with expected positiveimpact.
The UG Community is committed to continuing active engagement with the GPF, as far as possible, in helping to address some of the alleged highly questionable operational breaches and behaviours among some of its ranks in the particular case of Adrianna Younge. 'We will be publishing hotline

It continued that the committee takes note of the adoptionofseverallawsand regulationsbythestateparty tocombatcorruption, aswell as measures including the creation of a Special OrganisedCrimeUnitofthe GuyanaPoliceForce.

In this respect, thecommitteeurgesthestate party to: adopt concrete measurestoaddresstheroot causes of corruption as a matter of priority; ensure all corruption cases, including cases of those involved in high level corruption and corruption in police force, are independently and impartially investigated and prosecuted, and that perpetrators, if convicted, aresanctionedwithpenalties commensurate with the seriousness of the offence,

Theorganisationsaidthe government has ignored these recommendations. As a result, injustice and corruption deepen and tragedies like Adrianna's deathcontinue.
“In this dark hour, IDPADA-G renews its call for reform of existing legislation and institutions, like the Guyana Police Force, with a view to amending unjust laws and creating institutions that can be trusted and that treat all citizens equally”. The body is demanding that the police force be dismantled and replaced with a Guyana PoliceService, anentitythat can be trusted, not a police force whose mission, since its founding in 1839, is to protecttherichandpowerful and disrespect and oppress the people. “No one can bringAdriannaback, butwe can ensure that her death is notinvainbybringinganew day and meaningful change toournation,”itstated.

(TRINIDAD GUARDIAN) Big numbers on both sides, hot sun matching the politicaltempodegreefordegree–and some surprises for good measure.
That was the picture on Saturday at the final political ralliesofthePeople’sNational Movement (PNM) at Eddie Hart Savannah, Tacarigua, andtheUnitedNationalCongress (UNC) atAranguez Savannah, as the last stages of the battle for votes unfolded before tomorrow’s General Election.
It’s been a long haul of a campaign, often bitter betweenthesetwomainplayers, now coming down to a finish thatstillseems“thisclose”— but both are optimistic. UNC expecting victory. PNM giving no quarter. And yesterday’s rallies showed supporters of each in a dogged position.
Prime Minister Stuart Young, addressing supporters, focused on projecting confidence and stability, promisingeconomictransformation and assuring there would be no devaluation of theTTdollar.Inhismessage, Youngpositionedhispartyas the safer, more secure choice for the future. Meanwhile, Opposition and UNC leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar defendedherhealthamidpublic concerns, whileacknowledging past mistakes and apologising. She also reiterated her tough stance on crime. Her tone was a mix of personal reassurance, aiming to steady support heading into the polls.
Some “battle” started in the early afternoon on the EasternMainRoadandPriority Bus Route (opened Saturdayfrom10amto10pm)with signs of the National TransformationAlliance’sblueand white motorcade from east to west and UNC “convoys” along the way
At 1 pm, the sun-baking Aranguez Savannah had forced early UNC arrivals to shadedareastotheright, near the southern end where the RisingSun’splatformwasset up. Canadians votes today
(CNN) Canada is heading intofederalelections, wherePrime MinisterMarkCarneyisvyingfora chance to continue leading the country, as tensions grow with its closestneighbor
The former central banker's main competition in the April 28 vote is Pierre Poilievre, Canada's Conservative party leader whose politicalcapitalhasdeclinedasUSCanada relations nosedive amid threats from US President Donald Trump.
Canadians do not vote directly for prime minister – they vote for lawmakers representing political parties in their district or riding. The party with the largest number oflawmakerselectedtoparliament will form the government, and its leaderwillbecomeprimeminister While Carney's Liberal Party and Poilievre's Conservative Party are the frontrunners, other major political parties will also be on the ballot, including left-leaning New Democratic Party (NDP) led by JagmeetSingh, theGreenPartyand the exclusively-Quebec-based BlocQuébécois.
Tradewarandhouseprices
Poilievre was the favorite to win when former prime minister Justin Trudeau stepped down last month.ButTrump'ssteeptariffson Canada, and threats to its sovereignty, dramat

It's a reality Carney has not sugarcoated, warning of “tough days ahead” with pressure on Canadian employment. “These tariffsarefundamentallydamaging to the American economy and by extension to the global economy,”
