‘Americawillalwaysprotectitseconomicinterest’ – opposition parties on

The A Partnership

for National Unity (APNU) and theAlliance for Change (AFC) have voiced their concerns over the United Statesgovernmentrenewing the licence of Chevron to

operate in Venezuela, declaring that America will always protect its own economicinterest.

At their respective press conferences on Friday, both

parties were asked to respondtoChevronhavinga stake in both Guyanese and Venezuelan waters with the bordercontroversyandwhat itwouldmeanforGuyana.

Opposition leader, Aubrey Norton said that issues of this nature have to beaddressedin“apragmatic way.”

“We do not fool ourselvesthatanystatelikes us and will do the things because they like us All states pursue their interest. The United States is no different, it has its interests. The companies will pursue their interests, Exxon Mobil hasitsinterests,Chevronhas itsinterest,”hesaid.

Norton said the task at hand is to examine the dynamicsofthesituationand come up with an approach that will ensure Guyana benefitsandprogresses.

“I do not believe we can determine what the United States does in terms of Chevron and Exxon. What we can do is have a command of what we own andthenuseourintellectual, andothercapacitiestocarve out a niche, to ensure the people of Guyana benefit and that we don’t become a kind of a slave society,” he added.

The politician said further, that it is all about examiningthevariables, and developing strategies to achievetheobjective.

“Venezuela has its interests We have our interests. We have kept the Guyana/Venezuela territorialcontroversyonthe front burner We have it before the ICJ.We intend to develop a proper diplomatic strategy to deal with Venezuela, and so we believe, from a combination of proper diplomatic strategy, a plan and a competent and Foreign Service to implement it, we can keep Venezuela at bay, whilst ensuring the benefit from the oil and gas sector,” Nortonsaid.

C h a i r m a n a n d spokesperson for the AFC on oil and gas, David

Patterson said the renewal of Chevron’s licence to operate in the Spanish speaking by the Trump administrationissomething that very close attention should be paid to as it can either be an advantage or a disadvantage

On the advantage side, Chevron can connect the unhindered with Exxon wherebytheymaybeableto explore the waters closer to the Venezuelan border

However, it can pose a challenge if Chevron decided to prioritise “restarting and refinancing

their operation (in Venezuela) over putting in contributions (in the Stabroek Block), and they would have to put in contributions, I think it’s 25 percenttoanydevelopment, future development again So,wehavetopayveryclose attention to it as a country,” hesaid.

Patterson further stated thatanAFCgovernmentwill ensure that all the oil companies appear before parliamentarycommitteesto explain matters of their operations here, and be held accountablefortheiractions. Additionally, the companies needtobemoreforthcoming with information, as currently while they may share with the government, the rest of the country is in thedark.

AFC leader, Nigel Hughes highlighted the importance of citizens understanding how internationalpoliticsworkin Guyana’s position and the UnitedStates.

He said, “I’ll start with the obvious Henry Kissinger, back in 1972 I think it was said that America has no permanent friends It has only permanent interest The reality of Guyana and Venezuela is that Venezuela has a lot more oil than Guyana.Ithasalotmoreoil.

Hughes said at the moment, Guyana is producing oil at the most economical rates but the realityisthatforexample,if there is a regime change in neighboringVenezuela, then thelevelofinterestoftheUS in Guyana may not be the same.

He said this was one of thereasonswhenthepresent administrationwaselecteda year ago, he had proposed for the political parties to sit andcraft10–15-yearplansin several areas, including foreignrelations.

The attorney believes thatsuchplansarenecessary “because we do have to provide for the possibility that Venezuela, which has a populationofover25million

Even though the crude Guyana produces is considered‘sweetandlight’, unless the country has a superior economic advantage in oil production, it has to face the real possibility that at some stage.

“IfAmerica is balancing its interest in relation to its economic interests, between Guyana’s economic circumstances and those of Venezuela, it will act in its best interest We need to haveaplantodealwiththat,” Hughesstressed.

Citing the position of Venezuelan to not abide by a n y r u l i n g o f t h e International Court of Justice (ICJ), Hughes said Guyanacanbecomfortedby

the fact that the US has and perhaps continues to stand behindit.

However, “as a mature country, weneedtoconsider all options, and we should not be surprised and or disappointedby thefactthat Chevronhasgotalicencein America’s interest It may notbeinourinterest, andwe need to have the appropriate contingencyplans, whichare notcloisteredintheMinistry of Foreign Affairs and the government of the day and the PPP has clearly demonstrated over the last five years that they have no desire or interest to involve anybody else other than themselves in discussing foreign relations,” the AFC leaderlamented.

Highlighting that the government only seeks the oppositionleaderwhenthere isanescalatedcrisis,Hughes said this discussion should b e o n g o i n g i n t h e universities and foreign

service institutes, as every Guyanese ought to be fully a w a r e o f w h a t t h e consequencesare.

“We can’t run around holdingourheadssaying,oh my god, America gave a licence to Chevron in Venezuela If we were a responsible nation, we would expect that it should not be an outlier, and what we should be more concerned about is what plans do we have, collectively as a country, to addressthis,”hesaid.

Be reminded of the duty of leadership

DearEditor,

There are some events, sometroubling, sometragic, thatsomehowremainetched inourmemoriesandhelpus to navigate a world full of evilasitbringsinfocustothe brutal behaviour of man to man.

This is happening at a time when we claim to be part of a modern civilized society.Asociety and world where millions of lives including innocent children and women are slaughtered and property destroyed in every corner of the globe. These events should help us to do what we can to avoid theirre-occurrence.

As a youngster, still in Primary school, my parents relatedtometheMeetingof the BigThree in Potsdam of lateJuly1945andtheuseof a nuclear weapon on our fellow human beings on the th th 6 and 9 of August, where two Japanese cities, were flattened by the dropping of twoatomicbombs.

Athome,Julyisamonth as it draws to a close, we must never forget. Here I think of the community of

Christianburg, Wismar, Mc Kenzie, now known as Linden. On July 6, 1964 a launch carrying all PNC supporters and owned by a PNCMember, wasblownup offHurudiaintheDemerara River, taking 47 lives. I visited the area, and painfully recall seeing bodies including that of a pregnant woman and her fetus ripped from her stomach being taken by the tideintheDemeraraRiverto be recovered and identified by sorrowing relatives and friends.

Today, the pain remains as raw as ever On July 18, 2012, thirteen years ago, what began as a peaceful protest against electricity rate hikes ended in stateinflicted tragedy when Shemroy Bouyea, Allan Lewis and Ron Somerset were shot and killed by members of the Guyana PoliceForce–aforcewhose motto is “Service and Protection. “They were not rioters.

They were not armed. They were citizens exercising their rights to

protest a policy that would have pushed already struggling families deeper intopoverty “ I have forgiven those who cause such anguish and pain in the Linden community but while we forgive, we ought not to forget. In the case of the shooting to death of these three persons, I recall arriving in the community shortly after the police shooting and was told by a person that they have overheard a conversation with the then Commander, and the then Minister of HomeAffairs.

Of interest that Police Officer now occupies the highest position in the GuyanaPoliceForce.

As we see the cruelty unleashedinPalestine,Haiti and other places, we must pray that there is no reoccurrence of this kind in humanity and that Linden and Guyana be made free andsafe.

Asthismonthdrawstoa close, let us all be reminded of the duty of leadership. That all of our leaders be

reminded they are all accountable to a supreme being. That his Laws, direct ustorespecthumanlife.

Guyanese are accustomed to the polarizing nature of our politics

DearEditor,

The claims and counter claims of rigged elections notwithstanding, Guyanese have grown accustomed to the polarizing nature of our politics especially at elections time, during the campaigning period for votes and the tension that surface whenever the announcement of the results isimminent.

What is important to acknowledge, is that on the positive side, while there is a l w a y s r o o m f o r improvement, significant achievements have been accomplishedovertheyears asregardsourelectorallaws and procedures. Those born at the end of the 1980's or early 1990's would hardly know about the days when ourelectionsweredescribed as'fairytaleelections'andas 'crookedasbarbedwire'.

Unless such occurrences are explained by seniors to preceding generations, they mightfindithardtobelieve. Admittedly, it can be argued thattheymayhavehadsome insightsintowhatwastoldto them based on what they themselves would have observed during the March toAugust2020period.

Today, as it was on the

eve of the 2011 and 2015 elections the call for and against 'a change in government' has crept into newspaper editorials, campaign speeches, talk shows and social media platforms It looked as though small blocs of voters were moving away from the parties, they traditionally supported.

From all indications, the clamour for a change in government is being fed by those who seem to be afflicted by red carpet fever and a hunger for political power Contextually, it appearedasthoughGuyana's political landscape was beingredefinedbyaseriesof centrifugal developments due to the emergence of a number of upstarts on the politicalscene.

It was this rapidly developing political situation that raised alarm bells in some political quarters where, on the one hand, thecallforachangein g o v e r n m e n t m a d e principally by the newcomers could be heard; on the other hand, warnings from others were heard cautioning traditional supporters not to 'gamble withtheirfuture',notto'split

or waste their vote' and 'not to succumb to vote-buying.'

From the PPP/C, a strong message was sent to its supportersthat;politicaland other forces 'are working to ensure that the PPP/C does not have a majority in Parliament.'

In the midst of these n e w

ments, some newspaper columnists and social media influencers claimed that the rejection of the call for a change in government was driven by a certain degree of fear over encroachment on turf historically supportive of either the PPP or PNC Voters were told, that the stakes were so high that it had to do with the country's future.

InthecaseofthePPP/C, thepushbackagainstthecall for a change in government was reflected in its warning against vote splitting Supportersweretoldandthat the party needed 55,000 votes from Berbicians in 2025insteadofthe40,000it received in the 2020 elections.

In the final analysis, a well-designedandorganized fight back characterized by defiance, not capitulation wouldbejustifiedinorderto regainlostgroundifany Such actions would make a lot of sense since people, onceconvinced, will easily overcome the a c q u i e s c e n c e a n d submissiveness they might have mistakenly succumbed to.

Moreover, most probably, they would have concluded that should no actionbetakenontheirpart. It would, in the long term, impact negatively their livelihood knowing that the upstarts ought not to be the preferred alternatives to governthecountry.

The party further declared that this time around, ithas'itseyesseton winningNewAmsterdam,'a traditional stronghold of the PNC. For a party to push back against encroachment by another on its traditional support, theformulationand implementation of an effective campaign strategy must assume great urgency Such a strategy, can raise political awareness amongst its supporters and spur them into action to fight off any perceivedthreattoitsbase.

Remembering the heroic combatants of the Moncada!

DearEditor,

On July 26th, 1953, an eventofgreatsignificanceto the people of Cuba, the Caribbean and the world occurred in Santiago de Cuba.Onehundredandfifty young patriots of Cuba stormed the Military Barracks known as the Moncada. They were led by a young barrister, 27-yearoldFidelCastro.

This was the first big attempt to overthrow the military dictator Fulgencio Batista, thedictatorwhohad seized power in Cuba the yearbefore,1952.

That up-rising was put down brutally Most of the participants were killed duringthefightingandsome after they were captured. FidelCastroandafewothers survived.

At his trial, Fidel made what has become known as one of the most heroic defences of himself and his comrades.

Itisknownuniversallyas “History will Absolve me! Those were the words uttered by Castro in concludinghisdefence.

It was a defeat for the young movement The reactionaries rejoiced. What

was not known at the time wasthatthiswasnotalossof the war, but more the defeat inabattleforfreedom.

Castro, his brother, Raul (another giant in his own right)andhiscomradeswere exiled from Cuba The Batista regime could not dare to kill them because of thehugepopularitytheywon amongst the masses. The regime did not want to keep them incarcerated fearing that once on the island they would inspire revolt and revolution, thus deportation wasresortedto.

LedbyFidel, threeyears later the revolutionaries returned They suffered some serious setbacks but resumed the struggle for freedom That victory occurred on January 1st, 1959. Thus, began the work of building a new, free and humanesociety.

Almost from the very beginning the Cuban Revolution faced great hostility from its northern neighbour, theUnitedStates. The hostility developed becausethenewgovernment inCubaremainedloyaltoits promisetomakeabetterlife forthepoorworkingpeople. One of its early acts was to

implementAgrarian reform. At that time 90% of Cuba's agricultural lands was in the hands of a few rich Cubans and foreign capital, mainly UScorporations.

The Cuban Revolution redistributedthelandstothe landless farmers. That was the “original sin” of the Cuban revolutionaries SuccessiveUSgovernments haveneverforgiventhemfor that.

From then the Castro government became a target for regime change The attacks were military, sabotage, and economic sanctions.Since1962,sixtythree (63) years ago, the US imposed an economic blockadeagainstCuba. This is the longest sanctioned countryintheworld.

Just imagine all Cubans, sixty-three years and younger have never lived in n o r m a l e c o n o m i c conditions.

From a military standpoint the government hadtofightoffaninvasionin 1962.Manyterroristsattack. There was the case when dozens of young Cubans involved in a campaign to wipe out illiteracy were murdered by terrorists that

Soesdyke- Linden Highway - That is road!!

DearEditor,

On Monday, June 23rd 2025, I traveled along the HeroesHighway, thenalong the East Bank Public Road before turning on to the Linden Highway as far as Hauraruni.I'msogladthatI rarely have to traverse those roads!Itwasarough, bumpy ride!

Even though some sections of the Linden Highway are now being redone, (hopefully for the better),Ihadtomarvelatthe excellentroadworkthatwas executed there more than fivedecadesago!

The blockade and sabotage have cost the Cuban government billions of dollars. It has created enormous social and economic hardships for the peopleasawhole.

Despite the terrible oppression imposed by the United States, Cuba has made many very important strides.

Today, Cuba is the only country in the world in which every family has its own doctor It is one of the very few developing countries that has made independent discoveries in medicine. During the 20192022 Covid-19 Pandemic, Cuba was able to develop vaccines to fight the deadly disease.

They shared this with manypoorcountries.

Its education system is secondtononeintheworld. The minimum level of education in Cuba is secondary.According to the figures available as of 2023 some forty eight percent of Cubans have a tertiary education.

The education that Cubans received is not just aimed at creating good technicians but to produce p a t r i o t s a n d internationalists, technical personnelgroundedwiththe masses.

That is why Cubans are always on the front lines in helping humanity Recall during the outbreak of the dreadedEboladiseaseinthe Congo in 2014, Cuban doctors, nurses and other medical personnel were the

first on the scene fighting heroically to eliminate the dreadedillnessandtokeepit away from the rest of the world.

The Cuban Revolution has given tremendous support to the former colonies throughout the world. In our own region, Latin America, and the Caribbean it is Cuban medical teams that help to provide high quality service toourcountries.

Moreover, Cuba has generously helped internationally in educating our people in many highly spheres.

They have provided training for our doctors, engineers,ITpersonnel, etc. Cuba has done the most in developing the region's humancapital

The Cuban government is amongst the most generous and heroic in the world.

Today, we are observing the anniversary of the first majorbattleoftherevolution at a time when imperialism continues its efforts to destroy this glorious revolution.

Only recently, we saw the US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, making a swingthroughtheCaribbean and demanding of our

governments to break off their contracts with Revolutionary Cuba The US has no regard for the sanctityofcontracts.

It is rather ironic that many of the sanctions that have been imposed on Cuba by the US were done on the pretext of defending human rights. In reality, they are someoftheworstviolations of the human rights of the Cubanpeople.Theblockade has created tremendous hardshipsonthemasses.

Why, one may ask, is there such a hatred by the United States for Cuba, a country whose service to humanity is plain for all to see.AtthesametimetheUS supports the most barbaric regime in modern history, thegenocidalIsraeliregime?

It seems clear that the fear is because of the great potential of the Cuban system. Indeed, if Cuba has done so much under such great oppression one may ask what more it could have achieved if it had normal conditions. It's example and achievements would have become very attractive to oppressed peoples everywhere.

As we observe the sixty second anniversary of the Moncadaletusredoubleour call to the US to end its criminal blockade against the children and people of Cuba.

Let us call on the government of the region to stand up and say to the blockaders enough is enough! Allow Cuba to breathe and if you so desire compete with her on a level playingfield!

death blow to Africans and Guyana.

As a contribution to enhancing the country's understanding of the politicalengagement.

The PPP and its p r o p a g a n d a machinery/agents long painted me as an African racist, and the majority of their support base has accepted that portrayal of me.

Despite my long history of multi-racial politics and the defense of the Indian community, for which I, Dr DavidHindsandotherWPA comrades spent jail time for our political convictions Today, thismeansnothingto the PPP and its Indian supporters. I make this observation to say I don't expectmyviewstohaveany traction in the Indian community; hence, my target group is the African community If it proves to capture the attention outside ourcommunity, thatisgood, whether those readers agree withmeornot.

African youths are engaging in the upcoming elections, with a political consciousnessshaped, living under the PPP political domination of the country from 1992 to the present (minus the five years of the APNU+AFC rule, 2015 to 2020). As the saying goes, this is the Jagdeo/PPP generation; their lives have been a reflection of this reality Those28yearsofthe PPP rule have reduced our community to economic s e r v i t u d e , s o c i a l degradation, and political vulnerability

E x c e p t f o r t h e Indigenous community, we are at the bottom of the economic and social ladder And,ifwearenotmindfulof what we do in the elections, wewillendupatthebottom of the political ladder; some will say that we are already there.

To date, the WPA is the only party in the elections w i t h a c l e a r a n d

Whiletheuninformedor the politically misinformed and the PPP propaganda agents have attacked us on this matter, the fact is that throughout our existence, the WPA have always been guided by the view that the interest and survival of our ethnic/racial communities cannot be separate from the nationalimperative.

Forus, thedestructionof the African, Indian and Indigenous communities is, inessence, thedestructionof Guyana. To put it another way, the demise of the African Community will lead to the demise of Guyana. Half of the nation hasnoviablefuturewhenits community has less than 10%oftheeconomy

This represents an existentialthreattoAfricans. Ironically, this is despite the UN Declaration Decade of the People of African Descent. And its mandate to member governments is to correct historic injustices to Africans.

Frankly, African youths, like the rest of society, are unprepared for the challenges posed by these elections. Like the rest of Guyana, they will be exercising the franchise How they use or don't use it onSeptember1stwilldecide where Guyana goes in the future. Youngpeople40and under are the largest section of the voting population.

How they vote will determine the election results, whether the PPP or theAPNUcoalitionwillwin. And the fortunes of the s m a l l e r p a r t i e s Unfortunately, too many are not conscious of the power they hold and seem to be engaging in these elections as a choice of personalities rather than the profound challenges facing the nation andinherentintheelections. Simply put, what kind of state will emerge as a result oftheelections?

And its effects on their livesfordecadestocomeare notfullyunderstood.

APNU releases 100-day plan ahead of September polls

agenda, ahead of the September 1 general and regionalelections.

While some of the measures were previously announced by the party, several new initiatives were introduced, including a commitment to ensuring justice for Adriana Younge andothervictims.

In a statement, APNU said if elected, it will urgently begin raising the standard of living for all Guyanese by investing directly in the people and channelling the nation’s oil wealth into their pockets

The party noted that its top priority within the first 100 days would be to pass a supplementary budget to facilitate immediate implementations of its proposed initiatives, many of which are centred on economic relief, social j u s t i c e , a n d g o o d governance.

Among the proposed measures, APNU plans to issue adult cash transfers of

$100,000, raise the tax-free income threshold to $400,000

h, benefiting over 225,000 workers and self-employed individuals, and increase salaries for public sector workers, including teachers, nurses, and members of the disciplinedforcesbyupto35 percent.

Thepartyalsopledgedto increasetheold-agepension

to $100,000 per month and provide a $50,000 monthly stipend to students enrolled in tertiary and technical institutions Stipends for Toshaos, andregional, local, and village councillors wouldalsoberaised.

In response to the ongoing cost-of-living crisis, APNU proposes a range of relief measures, including the provision of

two hot meals daily for schoolchildren and the doublingofpublicandsocial assistance programmes such as school vouchers, family aid, and disability allowances.

The party also outlined its vision for the agriculture sector, promising to implement a sustainable agriculture programme in everyregion.

A significant portion of the plan focuses on oil and gas governance. APNU has pledged to engage ExxonMobilontheStabroek Block Production Sharing Agreement (PSA) to secure greater benefits for the country APNU also stated that it aims to amend the Natural Resource Fund Act to guarantee savings for future generations and “when oil prices are low,” the party said. Additionally, the party said that it is committed to publishing all government contracts related to the oil and gas sector and other major projects, and to establishing a professional and independent Petroleum Commission.

APNU also addressed nationwidecriminalmatters, vowing to pursue justice for thefamiliesofthe20Mahdia fire victims, as well as for Adrianna Younge, Ronaldo Peters, Keon Fogenay, the Henry boys, Haresh Singh, andothervictims.

Additional plans include r e s t a r t i n g p u b l i c consultations on the 2006 Amerindian Act, reforming procurement laws to facilitate a wider crosssection of Guy

Expressingconfidencein its development strategy, APNUstatedthat, bytheend of its first term in 2030, it aims to significantly reduce poverty and among other national crisis “We are confident that, in line with our People-Centered Development Strategy (PCDS), we will reduce poverty significantly, guarantee each household a liveable income, create a comprehensive social protection system, provide top-class social services, especially health care, build bettercommunities, improve ethnic harmony and social cohesion, meet the UN Sustainable Development Goals, and generally lift the quality of life of all Guyanese,”APNUstated.

The party concluded by affirming its commitment to p e o p l e - c e n t r e d development, saying, “We make these pronouncements to the Guyanese people as a party that is committed to serving and respecting the people, and as a party that fully embraces the principle that the ultimate goal of development is not merely about building roads and bridges, but about ensuring the well-being of all the people.”

AFC meets with Commonwealth Observer Mission, reiterates concerns about GECOM's readiness for elections

TheAllianceForChange (AFC) recently met with representatives of the Commonwealth Observer Mission, during which the party raised serious concerns regarding the G u y a n a E l e c t i o n s Commission's (GECOM) readinesstoconductfreeand fairelections.

According to the AFC, G E C O M r e m a i n s unprepared to deliver credible elections ahead of the upcoming general and regional elections, scheduledforSeptember1. In a statement issued on Friday, AFC said its delegation was led by party chairman David Patterson, while the Commonwealth teamwasheadedbyLinford Andrews, adviser and head of the Commonwealth ElectoralSupportSection.

The Commonwealth Observer Mission is currently on a pre-election assessment visit and is expected to observe the

electoral process a few days beforeandafterelectionday

During the meeting, the AFC outlined a number of c o n c e r n s t o t h e Commonwealth team. “The G u y a n a E l e c t i o n s Commission (GECOM) failedtoactoverthelastfour years with regards to implementing many of the crucial recommendations made by the international observer groups following the2020election,”theparty stated.

Among the issues highlighted by AFC were GECOM'srefusaltoaddress the large voter's list, its reluctance to consider the useofbiometricverification at polling stations, and its failure to respond to written queries submitted by the party. The AFC also raised concerns about the current composition of GECOM, wh

independence. Specifically, the party expressed discomfortwiththefactthat thelegaladvisortoGECOM is both a sitting government minister and a senior executive of the ruling People's Progressive Party (PPP), emphasising the matter as a conflict of interest.

"The Alliance For Change maintains that G E C O M a p p e a r s unpreparedtoholdfree, fair, and transparent elections and has done little to build public confidence in its systems, " the party concluded.

(Reuters)-InearlyJuly, the top official at the U.S. embassy in South Africa reached out to Washington asking for clarification on a contentious U S policy: couldnon-whitesapplyfora refugee programme geared towardwhiteSouthAfricans

if they met other requirements?

President Donald

Trump’s February executive order establishing the programme specified that it wasfor“AfrikanersinSouth Africa who are victims of u n j u s t r a c i a l discrimination,” referring to an ethnic group descended mostlyfromDutchsettlers.

Inadiplomaticcablesent July 8, embassy Charge d’Affairs David Greene asked whether the embassy could process claims from other minority groups claiming race-based discrimination such as “coloured” South Africans whospeakAfrikaans.

In SouthAfrica the term coloured refers to mixedracedpeople, aclassification created by the apartheid regimestillinusetoday

The answer came back days later in an email from Spencer Chretien, the highest-ranking official in the State Department’s refugee and migration

bureau, saying the programme is intended for whitepeople.

Reuters was unable to independently verify the preciselanguageintheemail which was described to the news agency by three sources familiar with its content.

The state department, responding to a request for commentonJuly18,didnot specifically comment on the email or the cable but described the scope of the policy as wider than the guidance in Chretien’s email.

ThedepartmentsaidU.S. policy is to consider both Afrikaners and other racial minorities for resettlement, echoing guidance posted on its website in May saying that applicants “must be of Afrikaner ethnicity or be a member of a racial minority inSouthAfrica.”

Chretien declined to

comment through a state department spokesperson. Greene did not respond to R

His century was his 38th in Tests anditground d o w n a p o o r a n d beleaguered India as England reached 544-7 at theclose,leadingby186.

After escaping a runout chance on 22, Root’s latest triumph was chanceless.

He put on 144 with Ollie Pope and after Pope fell for 71 and Harry Brook for three - both to WashingtonSundarinquick succession - Root shared a stand of 142 with Ben Stokes.

Brilliant Root puts Englandoncourse

When Root resumed on 11, England were still 133 behind in a strong but by no means secure position When Brook fell they were stillnineinarrears.

Root benefited from India captain Shubman Gill’s curious delay in introducing Sundar and the injury to Bumrah. India’s premier quick twisted his ankle walking down the stairs from the dressing room and was only able to

The Lancashire crowd stridently cheered each of the Yorkshireman’s three milestones, with Ponting commentating for television whenhishaulwaspassed.

Though some rain is forecast over the weekend, the turn for Jadeja for the delivery that dismissed Root, plus significant low bouncefromoneend, should give England plenty of assistance when their attentionsturntodismissing India.
