Though several local banks have severed ties with candidates of the We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) party, which is led by sanctioned businessman Azruddin Mohamed, theUnitedStates Ambassador to Guyana Nicole Theriot has made it clear that the local banks decisions were taken independently, without any involvementfromtheU.S.

Overthepastfewweeks, accounts belonging to WIN candidates were closed at three commercial banks: firstDemeraraBankLimited (DBL), followed by the Guyana Bank for Trade and Industry (GBTI), and then CitizensBank.

Even the New Building Society (NBS) has cut ties with the candidates over their association with the sanctionedindividual.

Last year, the U S Treasury'sOfficeofForeign Assets Control (OFAC)

sanctioned Azruddin Mohamed and his father Nazar Mohamed, citing allegationsofdefraudingthe Guyanese government of US$50 million in taxes through gold smuggling, as

well as bribing public officials.

Thelocalbankshadcited the sanction as reason the decisionwasmadetoensure the banks comply with internationalfinancialsector rules governing relations withsanctionedindividuals.

However, speaking with reporters on Wednesday, Ambassador Theriot stressed there is “absolutely no association” between the OFAC sanctions and the decisions made by local financial institutions. The ambassador explained that OFACsanctionsaretargeted specifically at the U.S. and apply “solely” to what happensthere.

AmbassadorTheriotalso noted that local banks did not engage with the U.S. Embassy before making their decisions “The decision by the banks was entirely independent We werenotconsulted, wewere notasked.

Notably, she added that she was unsure whether there had been any

OnAugust1,WINcalled for citizens to boycott two commercial banks for cancelling the accounts of their candidates. The party said that the banks and their associated businesses are being used by the government to destabilise and demoralise the twomonth-oldparty.

Meanwhile, the Guyana Association of Bankers Inc. (GABI) in a statement on Saturday reminded that all licensed commercial banks in Guyana operate within a framework of national laws and international standards.

“Banks are guided by strict regulatory obligations, including Anti-Money Laundering (AML) and CounteringtheFinancingof Te r r o r i s m ( C F T ) requirements, as well as global risk management practices.

OnJune23,Ambassador Theriot disclosed that the U.S. was very concerned about the possibility of Mohamed entering government and how that would affect the dynamics between the U S and Guyana. She contended that Mohamed being in government is problematic in multiple ways and explained that if someone sanctionedbyOFACwereto become part of the administration, it would restrict or change how the U.S. government interacts

with that government. She said too that the situation would likely raise concern among U.S. private sector entities already operating in Guyana or planning to invest. I n r e s p

Wednesday, Ambassador Theriot said she stands by her comments and made it clear that what she said was factual. “I was asked what being OFAC sanctioned meant in terms of the U.S. government being able to workwithanindividual, and I simply gave the facts, that have occurred in other countries where OFAC sanctioned individuals have been a member of the government, and how the U S government had to adjust, how we worked with that government,” she explained.

Violations of the Human Rights of People of Haitian Descent in the Dominican Republic

Dear Honourable Heads o f G o v e r n m e n t o f CARICOM

We write to register our deep concern about the current arrests, detention and forced deportation of children, women and men of Haitian descent living in the Dominican Republic (DR) According to the General Directorate of Migration (DMG), a total of 153,144 Haitians, orpeopleofHaitian descent, were deported during the first five (5) monthsof2025.

In 2013 a petition endorsedbyovertwo(2,000) thousandindividualsandcivil society groups from the Caribbean condemned the ruling of the Constitutional Court of the Dominican Republic, which in effect, denied citizenship to thousands of people of Haitian origin living in the Dominican Republic, including many whose parents were brought to work in the Dominican Republic's sugar industry, and who were registered as Dominican. The petitioners calledonthegovernmentsof CARICOMtotakeactionto defend our sisters and brothers in the Dominican Republic. That ruling was estimatedtohaveaffectedup to 210,000 Dominican-born children, womenandmenof Haitian descent, stripping citizenshiprightsofchildren of Haitian migrants born after 1929, making them vulnerable to deportation. Atthattimethevastmajority of Dominicans of Haitian descent living in the DR did nothaveHaitiancitizenship, had few or no ties to Haiti, and in many cases did not even speak Kreyol, the

DearEditor, As Guyana prepares for one of the most critical elections in its democratic history, it is deeply concerning to witness the g l a r i n g s i g n s o f administrative disarray withintheGuyanaElections Commission (GECOM)

The recent scramble to recruit a Legal Officer and now an Assistant Media Liaison Officer mere days beforetheofficialstartofthe elections period is emblematicofacommission that appears increasingly unprepared, rudderless, and reactionary

Despite the passage of a law in 2014 to correct the court decision, and widespread condemnation, including by the InterAmerican Commission on Human Rights, the United Nations and the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (UNHCR), only around 26,000 or 12% of those affected by this Constitutional Court ruling regained their nationality by 2022 Additionally, those whoremainedstatelesswere informedthattheyweretobe denied identity documents, making them unable to access schools or healthcare services.

Even before the 2013 ruling, 68,700 Haitians were reportedly deported from the DominicanRepublicbetween 2011 and 2012, and 10 years later, in 2023 as many Dominicansremainstateless, and are unable to gain Dominicancitizenship

As the CARICOM petition of 2013 stated, "There is a long history of racism, xenophobia and violence directed against Haitians in the Dominican Republic which cannot be disassociated from this latest injustice"

MASS DEPORTATIONS

AMID CRISIS IN HAITI

Unacceptably, thecurrent situation has improved little since2013,andinsomeways hasevenworsenedforpeople of Haitian descent. On October 2, 2024, President Luis Abinader announced a

plan to deport up to 10,000 migrantsperweek, primarily targeting people of Haitian origin By April 2025, over 180,000 people had already been deported, according to the General Directorate of Migration.

These mass deportations are happening despite the deepening humanitarian and security crisis in Haiti putting returnees at seriousrisk, andviolatingthe principleofnon-refoulement, which prohibits returning peopletodanger

AmnestyInternationalon April 22, 2025, issued an Appeal for Urgent Action to be taken to stop these violations of the human rights of hundreds of thousands of people of Haitiandescent.

NEW POLICIES THREATEN BASIC RIGHTS

On April 6, 2025, the Dominican government introduced 15 new migration measures One alarming policy requires hospital staff to report the immigration status of patients, and to notifyauthoritiesifapersonis undocumented

These individuals face immediate deportation after receiving care. This puts people's right to health, privacy, and physical safety at risk and discourages vulnerable groups, such as pregnant women, children, and survivors of violence, from seeking essential medicaltreatment.

Ram's way just another opinion

DearEditor,

Mr Christopher Ram wrotealettertheotherdayin S/S 3.8.'25 about 'floorcrossing'. He dismissed the action as 'solely a career strategy.' Well, so much for just another opinion on that politicalphenomenon.

I won't challenge Ram's opinion To me, floor crossingisstrictlyapersonal matter It attracts public interest depending on the party affected, length of membership of the floor crosserinthatparty;whether thepersonhasahighprofile insociety;theirexposureon TV,radio, mainstreammedia or social media outlets; degreeofsocietalestimation of their profession; the extent to which they reflect the culture of 'Dr Politics;' theirreputationinandoutof parliament, their ability to communicate effectively across the political and ethnic divide, as well as the spread of their circle of friendsandassociates.

Floor-crossers may have the ability to model, simulate, and ultimately anticipate the intentions and behaviors of their erstwhile colleagues as well as their adversariesandothers, inthe organization to which they belonged or wished to belong, usingacombination of personal and political experienceandinterests.

Tome,itisaquestionof behavioranalyticsor'mental ingenuity' as Marcel Proust put it in his book; 'Swann's Way - 'In Search of Lost Time.' Aspects of Proust's w o r k b e a r s s o m e resemblance to those who may have consciously crossedover

Who knows? Maybe the floor-crosser's casus belli with his or her erstwhile confederates, was based on revenge; a feeling being marginalized or ignored when policy issues are to be discussed and with rumors and whispers maliciously beingspreadaboutthem. As a consequence, what may have driven them outwards and towards was perhaps opportunism, seeking relevance, tactical or

strategic, freedomfromwant and to want, mutual considerations or just outright and unhinged ambitiousness,Asoneofthe many put it "I feel valued, I feel respected" having crossed over from his party toanother

Observers claim that in the world of political happenings crossing the floorisnotunusual, it is a natural thing that blowsthroughthehumdrum and rumble and tumble of political life. But that's just another opinion. For me, it's a question of deep conviction. I take myself as an example and ask; where or to whom can I cross over to,otherthantomygraveor the cremation pyre and then tobesavedordamnedsince neither I nor Ram cannot changeoursouls'fate. The current regime's hold on power has damaged longstanding personal relationships

DearEditor, The upcoming General and Regional Elections present an opportunity for the people of Guyana to enhance their lives or to continue living under an oppressiveregime.

In a small country like Guyana, it is crucial to

This situation fosters corruption, poor discipline, a n d i n e f f i c i e n c y Additionally, if there is a change in government, a significant level of mistrust islikelytoarise. It is arguably the constitutional right of every citizen to support a political movement of their choice. However, public servants and members of the disciplined services should not openly display their support for any political group. Unfortunately, it has become common for some

publicservantsandmembers ofthedisciplinedservicesto openly attend the PPP/C's political functions and campaignforthatparty

The current regime's hold on power has damaged long-standing personal relationships. Some of my friends who work in state institutions now distance themselves from me due to my c

APNU vows to shield public servants from political interference …will push for greater opposition oversight in government

Vice Presidential

candidate of A Partnership for National Unity (APNU), Ganesh Mahipaul, has pledged that if his party is elected to office, it will establish robust systems to protect public servants from politicalinterference.

Speaking during a live broadcastofthe"Reset"talk showwithhostJRGiddings, Mahipaul also announced that APNU would seek to amend laws to ensure the o p p o s i t i o n h a s representation on state boards, aninitiativeaimedat broadening inclusion and strengtheningaccountability in governance Mahipaul highlighted ongoing issues withinGuyana'sgovernance framework, particularly the infiltration of the public sector by politicians He emphasised the need for stronger, more independent institutions that function

effectively regardless of which party forms the government. “I believe that Guyana for too long have had systems and structures that are allowing politicians to infiltrate them. All the years back you see every time there is a change of government, the structure and sys

come vulnerable and politicians then take control of the public sector and the professionals are not a

execution, transparency, and accountability should be upheld by professionals. He argued that strengthening thisseparationisessentialto safeguarding national institutionsforthebenefitof allcitizens.

To address these issues, Mahipaul said that under an APNU government, the party is prepared to make legislative amendments to guarantee the opposition's presence on key decisionmaking bodies. “We are prepared to amend the laws of our country, to have a reflection of the opposition also,”hestated, pointingout that currently, most state boards do not include opposition representatives unless mandated by law “Take for example the University of Guyana, the leader of the opposition by the will of the law has one seat on the UG board, but when it comes to GuyOil there is no opposition representative,” Mahipaul noted Importantly, one major area of concern Mahipaul stressed, is the National Procurement and Tender Administration

Board, which is responsible for awarding billions of dollars in contracts He declared that APNU would amend procurement laws to ensure opposition representations are on the board.“Billionsandbillions of dollars have passed through that board in the recent of times and no opposition representatives are on that board Opposition presence will h o l d g o v e r n m e n t accountable,”heasserted.

Additionally, addressing the issue of political interference in the public sector, Mahipaul raised serious concerns about public servants being pressured to compromise their professional ethics for politicalgain.Tocombatthis, he said APNU intends to implement a merit-based employment system for p u b l i c s e r v a n t s ,

accompanied by strong job protections This would allow them to perform their duties without fear of politicalretaliation.

“When they are employed on the basis of merit, they must enjoy job protectionsothatwhenthey execute their functions in keeping with the law and they to go against certain political directives that do not promote accountability and transparency and they speak up against it , they must not feel feared or violated or subject to losing their jobs,” he said. “We have too much people that are politically associated to partiesandholdingpositions that are supposed to be guardrailstodemocracyand wewanttoseeastheAPNU a system where that can be protected and isolated from politicalinterference.”

Mahipaul concluded by

reiterating APNU's commitment to creating governance structures that ensure both public servant in dep end en ce an d oppositionoversight.

“I believe that there ought to be systems and structures that are put in place to guarantee opposition presence for greater oversight and to ensure that public servants are protected and will not have to be forced to deck themselves out in party colours to show party allegiances , ” Mahipal stated.

Cash-grant governance

Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo is like an aging magician. He continues to toss silver coins into the air and call it policy. The latest conjuration is a transportation cash grant, a cash-in-hand reprisal, and another of his wild election promises.

Bharrat Jagdeo prefers to govern not with programmes but with handouts, each one pitched with theatrics. He prefers populist measures rather than equity. We now live in the era of cashgrant governance. Uniform grants, disability grants, health grants, school cash grants, school supplies grants, and now transportation grants—an ecosystem of entitlements, scattered from the seat of government like alms. But these are not reforms; they are the opiates of petro-dollar intoxication.

And when a government forgets how to build systems and instead builds dependencies, we should all be wary and be worried.

The free press, the indispensable foundation of any functioning democracy, has found itself under siege. H@RD TRUTHS

From Wismar to winning, New Amsterdam to New Guyana

Blindfolded or stone deaf, I know it is election season when the fervors of the political hustings strike like lightning, attract like a magnet. Likelightningthere is a jolt that ripples through the system; often it is too much for a simple guy like me.

In Region 10, PPP strongman, Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo, bowled a bumper or yorker-make a choice, Guyanese-whenherearedup with flipping and winning. Not Region Six, but Region 10. From the madness of Wismar, to the new strangeness of winning. In New Amsterdam, with no seeming threats to that PNC stronghold, party leader, AubreyNorton, roaredabout a New Guyana. One that is without the PPP I now knowwhyelectionsgiveme atoothacheandred-eye.

SixtyyearsafterWismar, the PPP could revel in a crowd of several hundred andthinkofcarryingRegion 10 (Linden). At last count, the population of Region 10 was approximately 40,000. Still, free healthcare, education, and a 50% electricityratereductiongoa far way My best to the Big Man from Sparendaam, President Jagdeo. Had that right, didn't I? What Dr Jagancouldn'tdo,Dr Jagdeo is almost guaranteeing he could get done. Give him credit, he is giving it a good campaign try If the PPPof Jagdeo is working so hard, promising so much, in Linden, thenthepartyisina mad, desperate scramble for votes.

From anywhere and anybody Thenagain, every vote takes on new significance, and there may

benomarginforerror, when o n e w e i g h s t h e consequences of migration, and who makes up the bulk ofthoseexitingtheseshores. ItiswhyIlikeelections. The juices get going, there is no end to the excitements and extravagances promised There is also that rarity, two ofthem. Politicianscoming down from their thrones to the level of the ordinary people, and with a beggar's smileandoutstretchedhand. Give me a chance. Another one. I'll be better this time, incomparably sweeter too. Justgivethatsecondchance, please.

Over in the Ancient County of Berbice, Mr Norton was all modern vitality OutwiththePPP,in withthePNC(APNU). New Amsterdam is in the bag, which the crowd confirmed. But of the rest of Guyana,

that's where the challenge and showdown and real battlefieldare. Everyinchof ground contested. Not one vote yielded. Mr Norton went out ready for war, zeroing in on the PPP's Achilles heels: corruption andnepotism. Saythosetwo words, for a start, and a formulawithsomestinginit, some potential for victory, gets a breath of life. The PNCisontosomething, and likeanalligator, itissinking its teeth deeper, not relenting A word of warning: whether PNC or APNU,thepartyhasitsown corruptionhistory

The big issue, as I see it, is do Guyanese, especially party supporters [diehard or disappointed] really care about corruption and nepotism? Maybe not before, but I think that they do now They are not

sharing in oil money, oil's abundance, that's for sure.

Buttheyareseeingahandful of their neighbors and comrades doing extremely wellforthemselvesandtheir families Multiply that anger and discontent from village to village, region to region, and there is a sea changethatmay(may)have some muscle in it. To say this differently, Guyanese voters are caught in a bind.

Dotheywanttorollthedice with the PPP (or the PNC) and live with the same disgruntlements and disillusions for another five years, and then for the same speechesandpromisesatthe end of the upcoming 5-year cycle?

Now, I give my own summationofboththePPP's and PNC's positions. In the faceofthecorruptionsofthe PPP elite, there is a single reality for Guyanese voters.

Vote in the traditional manner, andbereadytolive withthepredatoryPPPelite, withpersonaldefeatassured.

The PPP had everything going for it in the last five

years, but failed. It still haspotential, buttheelement ofdistrustiswideanddeep. It hemorrhages the prospectsofapartythatonce had victory in its hand, but squandereditsopportunities. The impact of prolonged migration on the PPPvoting base now comes into play likeneverbefore, alongwith understanding the mysteries surrounding the census figures. The APNU/PNC hasitsowntroublingrecord, which sticks to it like Crazy Glue. Guyana's voters still own the driver's seat. They have been uncaring on how they have managed that privilege before. They can continue to vote as before. Or they can turn sharply Whatwilltheydo? Thereis thisonelastchanceleft. Itis howIseeit, howIcallit.

APNU: 'ERC is a political stooge for PPP'

...says will not sign code of conduct, but will conduct campaign peacefully

The A Partnership

For National Unity (APNU) said that it did not sign the elections code of conduct prepared by the Ethnic Relations Commission because that constitutional bodyhasbecomea“stooge” of the ruling party and is unfit to be the sponsor of suchanimportantdocument.

Out of the six political parties contesting the upcoming September 1 general and regional elections, only four have signed the Ethnic Relations Commission's (ERC) Code of Conduct on Tuesday, whichisintendedtopromote peace, unity, andresponsible campaigning during the electionperiod. Thesigning ceremony took place at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre(ACCC),whereparty leaders and representatives pledged to uphold mutual respect, reject divisive rhetoric, and prioritise national interest throughout thecampaignseason.

The parties that signed the code were the Alliance for Change (AFC), the People's Progressive Party Civic(PPP/C),theAssembly of Liberty and Prosperity (ALP), and We Invest in

Nationhood (WIN). The A Partnership for National Unity (APNU), led by Aubrey Norton, and the ForwardGuyanaMovement (FGM), led by Amanza Walton-Desir,didnotattend orsigntheagreement.

InastatementtheAPNU Coalition said “Let us be abundantly clear that while we believe in the value of a Code of Conduct on peaceful, respectful, and lawful campaigning, we have no confidence in the i m p a r t i a l i t y a n d independence of the Ethnic Relations Commission

Under the PPP government, theERChasbecomemerely a political stooge Not surprisingly, it has accordingly failed to p e r f o r m i t s m a n y constitutional functions ”

“The ERC is therefore unfit to serve as the sponsor of a CodeofConductonpeaceful electioncampaigning. Thus, weseethesigning ceremony as a political gimmick, one that will do littletopromotefreeandfair elections and to serve the interests of the Guyanese people,” the statement added.

The APNU Coalition said that they will conduct

theircampaigninapeaceful, lawful, respectful manner

“We embrace the fact that Guyanese have the constitutional freedom of expression, association and assembly We embrace the fact that Guyanese must be able to freely vote for the party of their choice. As the next government, we will create the conditions for the ERC to transform itself in line with its constitutional mandate,”thecoalitionsaid.

Kaieteur News had APNU's Presidential Candidate, Aubrey Norton on Tuesday who made it clearthathispartywouldnot be signing the code, citing bias within the ERC. “The APNU made it very clear thatwearenotgoingtosign anycodeofconductbecause the Ethnic Relations Commission is biased WhenPPPpeopleviolatethe conduct, nothing happens. But as soon as the APNU does something, they make an issue out of it,” Norton said.

travelbondtoUS–Ambassador

United States Ambassador to Guyana Nicole Theriot on Wednesday said that Guyanese applying for tourist or business visas to the United States, at this point, willnotberequiredto pay a bond of up to US$15,000. This clarification comes in light of a recent Federal Register Notice which outlines a new pilot programme by the U S DepartmentofStatethatwill requireselectvisaapplicants to pay a refundable travel bond.

According to the notice the “visa bond pilot programme” is a 12-month initiative that will begin on August 20. It applies to temporary visitors for businessorpleasure(B-1/B2) who are nationals of countries with high visa overstay rates, limited screening and vetting capabilities, or those that offer citizenship-byinvestment without residency requirements Consular officers at their discretion can require applicants to post bonds of

US$5,000, US$10,000, or US$15,000. The funds will be refunded if travellers depart the U S in accordancewiththetermsof theirvisas.

“Currently, Guyana is not included on that list. It does not apply to Guyanese citizensapplyingforavisa,” Theriot stated on the sidelines of an event at the UmanaYana.

While she was unable to giveanumberofhowmany Guyanese have overstayed their visas, she noted, “but Guyana'soverstayrateisnot veryhigh.

In my opinion, it is not problematic, in that sense. So, at this moment, Guyana isnotincludedinthatlistbut

operate within the confines ofthelaw

In a statement following the ceremony, the ERC reaffirmed its constitutional mandate to promote ethnic harmony, safeguardnational unity, and support peaceful democratic processes Chairman of the ERC, Shaikh Moeenul Hack, emphasised the need for responsible leadership and national solidarity “Let us also reaffirm that the political space in Guyana must never be reduced to hostility or intimidation. It must remain one of dignity, responsibility, and decency, whereallcitizensfeelsafeto participate and express themselves without fear,” Hack said. He described the code of conduct as not merely a commitmentto the ERC but as a solemn promise to the people of Guyana to campaign peacefully, avoid hate speech, and act in the national interest over partisanambition.

Hack further stated that the primary aim of the code of conduct is to ensure that all political parties operate within the rule of law and encourage their supporters to do the same While acknowledging the ERC's own imperfections, Hack emphasised that these flaws should not be used as excuses to create division but instead be met with political maturity and restraint. “The true strength ofademocracyisnotmerely testedattheballotbox, butin how its leaders conduct themselves before, during, andafterelections,”hesaid.

During the remarks session at the signing, WIN party representative Hana

Khamelia Mohamed voiced her party's support for the ERC's principles of peace, tolerance, and political decency However, she also raised serious concerns about the lack of action by the ERC regarding attacks on WIN candidates and supporters, allegedly by the PPP/C government “We cannot sign in silence. We must speak honestly about the reality we continue to face. The incumbent PPP/C government has repeatedly andopenlyviolatedthespirit and letter of this very code. We call the commissioners attentionto the constant and thedeliberatediscreditingof our presidential candidate

Azrudin Mohammed through coordinated, online smeared campaigns and state affiliated messaging. These attacks are meant to diminish his credibility and silence the hope he representsforsomany,”she said Mohamed also highlighted the targeted harassment of Muslim female leaders within WIN, claimingtheyfacerelentless cyberbullying and online stalking with racial and religious undertones. “We are specifically concerned aboutthesilenceofreligious organizations who have failed to condemn these genderandbigotedattacks,” she added She further criticized the PPP's alleged use of children in political rallies, calling it a deeply troubling practice that exploits minors for political optics.

In addition, Mohamed accused the ruling party of engaging in intimidation tacticsandviolatingboththe RepresentationofthePeople Act and the Criminal Law

Presidential Candidate of the APNU, Aubrey Norton

(Offences) Act “It is unlawful to threaten, obstruct, or harass anyone exercising their political rights.Thesearenotisolated incidents.

In response, PPP representative and Minister of Agriculture Zulfikar Mustapha expressed disappointment over WIN's accusations. He emphasised that such behaviour violates the very code being signed.

“Itwasveryunfortunatethat weareheresigningacodeof conduct and we heard a representative of a political party here accusing another party of a number of things that never existed, ” Mustaphasaid.Hecautioned that continued baseless allegations could deepen division and disrespect the spiritofthecodeofconduct. “Weshouldnever, ever, asa political party, try to divide this nation. Mustapha urged all political parties to lead by example during the election period.“Asweapproachthe election campaign period, and we are in the midst of thiscampaign, itisvitalthat

Earlier this year, the United States of America Embassy in Guyana warned

overstaying on a US visa, noting that such actions can result in severe penalties, including permanent ban on re-entry and criminal prosecution.

The US Embassy noted thatoverstayingavisaisnot only a violation of US immigration, but also a seriousoffencethatcanhave long-lasting effects on an individual's ability to travel to the United States in the future.

WASHINGTON, Aug 6 (Reuters) - The United Stateswillimposeatariffof a b o u t 1 0 0 % o n semiconductor chips imported from countries not producing in America or planning to do so, President Donald Trump said.

Trump told reporters in the Oval Office on Wednesday the new tariff ratewouldapplyto"allchips and semiconductors coming into the United States," but would not apply to companies that had made a

"So 100% tariff on all chips and semiconductors coming into the United States. But if you've made a commitment to build (in the U.S.), or if you're in the process of building (in the U.S.), as many are, there is notariff,"Trumpsaid.

It is not clear how many chips will be covered by the tariffs. Congress created a $52.7 billion semiconductor manufacturing and research subsidy program in 2022.

The Commerce Department

Trump threatens 50% tariffs

(BBC) US President DonaldTrumphasissuedan executiveorderhittingIndia withanadditional25%tariff over its purchases of Russianoil.

That will raise the total tariff on Indian imports to the United States to 50%among the highest rates imposedbytheUS.

The new rate will come into effect in 21 days, so on 27August, according to the executiveorder

Aresponse from India’s foreign ministry on Wednesday said Delhi had alreadymadeclearitsstance onimportsfromRussia, and reiterated that the tariff is “unfair, unjustified and unreasonable”.

“It is therefore extremely unfortunate that the US should choose to impose additional tariffs on Indiaforactionsthatseveral other countries are also taking in their own national interest,”thebriefstatement read.

“India will take all actions necessary to protect its national interests,” it added.

The US president had earlier warned he would raise levies, saying India doesn’t “care how many peoplein Ukrainearebeing killed by the Russian War Machine”.

On Wednesday, the White House said in a statement that the “Russian Federation’s actions in Ukraine pose an ongoing threat to US national security and foreign policy, necessitating stronger measures to address the nationalemergency”.

The incident comes as humanitarian organisations warn of famine and disease spreading across the enclave, while deaths from starvation and malnutrition continue to rise amid severe Israelirestrictionsonaid. Hungercrisis

At least five people died from malnutrition on

Wednesday, medicalsources told Al Jazeera. A source at al-ShifaHospitalinnorthern Gaza confirmed that Hiba Yasser Abu Naji, a child, died from malnutrition. An infant also died from starvation, according to the source, and an adult from Jabaliawasreportedtohave diedaswell.

According to Gaza’s Ministry of Health, at least 193 people – including 96 children – have died from starvation and malnutrition sinceOctober2023.

On Tuesday, the Israeli military allowed 85 aid trucks to enter Gaza – far below the 600 trucks a day needed to meet basic requirements, according to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).

Meanwhile, Palestinians approaching aid distribution sitesrunbythecontroversial Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) have frequently come under Israeli fire since the organisation launched operations in late May, after Israel slightly eased its total blockade Such shootings have become near-daily occurrences near GHF sites incentralandsouthernGaza.

“Time is running out for people in Gaza, and a deal has to be reached between Hamas and the Israeli military that will allow for humanitarian aid to be let into the enclave,” Hisham Mhanna, a spokesperson for the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), toldAlJazeera.

“Everyone has suffered enough We have lost colleagues, we have lost friends, families – everyone in Gaza is impacted,” he said.

on India for buying Russian oil

customers include China, IndiaandTurkey

The threatened tariff hike follows meetings on Wednesday by Trump’s top envoy Steve Witkoff in Moscow, aimed at securing peace between Russia and Ukraine.

Delhi had previously called Trump’s threat to raisetariffsoveritspurchase of oi

d unreasonable”.

Inanearlierstatement,a spokesperson for India’s foreign ministry, Randhir Jaiswal, said the US had encouraged India to import Russiangasatthestartofthe conflict, “for strengthening global energy markets stability”.

He said India “began importing from Russia because traditional supplies were diverted to Europe after the outbreak of the conflict”.

The latest threatened tariff demonstrates Trump’s

willingness to impose sanctions related to the war in Ukraine even against nations that the US considers to be important alliesortradingpartners.

This could be a warning that other countries could feel a real bite if Trump ramps up those kinds of sanctions once Friday’s deadline passes, when the USpresidenthasthreatened newsanctionsonRussiaand to place 100% tariffs on countries that purchase its oil.

This would not be the first time the Trump administration has imposed secondary tariffs, which are also in place to punish buyersofVenezuelanoil.

India has previously criticisedtheUS-itslargest trading partner - for introducingthelevies, when the US itself is still doing tradewithRussia.

Last year, the US traded goods worth an estimated $3 5bn (£2 6bn) with

Russia, despite tough sanctionsandtariffs.

TrumpandIndianPrime Minister Narendra Modi have in the past referred to each other as friends and, during Trump’s first term, attended political rallies in eachother’s’countries.

But thathas not stopped Trump from hitting India with the levies, suggesting diverging interests between NewDelhiandWashington.

The tariffs are expected to make Indian goods far costlierintheUS,andcould cut US-bound exports by 40–50%, according to the Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI), a Delhibasedthinktank.

“India should remain calm, avoidretaliationforat least six months, and recognise that meaningful trade negotiations with the US cannot proceed under threats or mistrust,” former Indian trade official and head of GTRI, Ajay Srivastava, said.

Sir Garfield Sobers was a phenomenal talent

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth with Gary Sobers before the commencement of the Lord’s test.

In a revisit to the annals of cricket history shared by West Indies pacer Colin Croft, it has been noted that in the recently concluded five match AndersonTendulkar trophy series, Shubman Gill piled up over 700 runs, Mohammed Siraj claimed more than 20 wickets, and Harry Brook took 10 catches. England, under the leadership of Ben Stokes and Ollie Pope, won all five tosses Brilliant individual performances scatteredacrossbothteams.

Now,imagineascenario where one individual does allofthat-scoresmorethan 700 runs, picks up 20 wickets, takes 10 catches, and wins all five tosses as captain. In today’s game, it
