DearEditor, How can anyone, who li
Guyanese are rational and can see unveiling before theireyes,anAdministration ledbyitsPresidentandVice President, not see that we have crossed the line of decency What we understand to be democracy and the rule of law, have entered a state of dictatorship, reminiscent of the worst days of Hitler's Germany and Mussolini's Italy, just four generations ago.
Irefertoonlytwoissues. One, this Government's refusal to deduct union dues for the Guyana Teacher's Union (GTU). In a normal functional democracy,
characterizedbydecency,an almost universal practice of the Employer (in this case the PPP Government) facilitating deduction of Union Dues to hand over to the Union representing a givencategoryofworkersis anorm.
But beyond this normal practice, the High Court ruled that the Government must deduct Union Dues for theGuyanaTeacher'sUnion. Thishasnothappenedandis not happening. This assault ontraditionandtherulingof the High Court is unbelievable.
S e c o n d , a g a i n inconsistent with the norms of a free and democratic society, you have a government that is utilizing
US$50,000.00 monthly, to burnish its image by promulgatingtheirfictionas facts.
All the time there is the crusade of damning the independent media, whose only crime is speaking the truth and exposing the calumny of a government, whosemissionseemstobeto ensure that every facet of national life responds to the drumbeat of their idea of oneness, meaning the only onesthatmatterarethePPP's top brass supported by sycophants
The crusade is so total, that they have the Leader of the Cricket Board, publicly endorsing a particular Leader of a particular Party This has never happened
before in all of my 70 odd years of public life in our country It is disgusting, distasteful and an unhappy descent into the dungeon of humanexistence. I note the words of the Prophet Kahlil Gibran“Pity the Nation, whose Statesman is a Fox and whose Philosopher is a juggler, whoseartistheart o f p a t c h i n g a n d mimicking.”
All Guyanese must not beguiltyofthesinofsilence, but speak up, keep writing, for the struggle for sanity, safety and good sense must continue unabated. Maybe verysoon, wewillsolvethis problem.

DearEditor,
When questioned about several defections, at his 'press conference', from the PNCR recently all the Opposition Leader's response was that the defectors, without exception, were nonperformers, inferring that they did not work as expected (by him) for the development of the party Whatarevelation!Itcouldn't be that they had just started being non-performers, just before national and regional elections.
Heclaimedthatnotbeing the head of the list, he could not have recalled them from theirpositions.Whythendid henotmeetwiththeheadof the list (former President Granger) and lobby for their recall.
The Leader of the Opposition's reaction is
nothing but sour-grapes attitude you can't have them so they are no good. These same defectors have moved on to the governing PPP/C,andotherendeavors, where they are welcomed and will surely debunk the propaganda, due to their patriotism, that they are cognitively indolent (mentallylazy)orphysically slothful by exhibiting their activismenergetically Editor, what the Leader oftheOppositionisdoingto save face is distracting viewers and listeners (a redherring tactic) from the fact that high level members of his party are abandoning the party which is sinking and drainingitofusefulpolitical capital. The PNCR is in panic mode with defections and lack of compromise within its ranks. From the time he was selected as
leaderbydefault(forlackof opposition from within) key party members became disgruntled and less enthusiastic about working with him. But like the king wearing invisible new clothes, he was oblivious of theobvious.
The three Members of Parliament (MP's) who abandoned the sunken AFC and joined the half sunken PNCR are nothing but opportunists They fullywell knew that the AFC wouldnotgetenoughseatsat the upcoming elections to keep them in parliament. TheythinkthePNCRwould rewardthembydoingso.
Little do they know that the PNCR will not secure sufficient seats in the next parliament to accommodate them and their wishful thinking, delusions of grandeur Further, long-
standing members of the PNCR will not take it too kindly for new crossover wannabees to supersede them in dividing the meager spoilstheywillacquire.
So, after reading from a briefpreparedscript, without makingeye-contactwiththe reporters, at the press conference, alltheLeaderof theOppositioncouldsaywas that the defectors were not significant, tantamount to goodriddance, inaneffortto console himself and his diminishingloyalfollowers. Editor, thebottomlineis that the PNCR will continue foralongtimeastheofficial opposition and the irrevocabledispensationwill be a resounding victory for the PPP/C, something most Guyanese want, rather, need anddeserve.

DearEditor,
Many observers and politicalfiguresareusingthe guise of national security to continue to defend the lack of negotiations between ExxonandGuyana.Wemust remember that the UK and China are also our allies. CNOOC has a stake in oil operations, and the UK offers a strong alternative to Exxonforoilexploration, oil extractionanditssale.

DearEditor, Resilience and stability can be considered the appropriate words to describe the current relationship between Guyana and China in 2025. Despite global turbulence due to armed conflicts, financialsystemfluctuations and trade wars among many other countries, Guyana and China have maintained a stable and productive relationship.
Guyana currently hosts the 17th Ambassador from China to Guyana, Ambassador Yang Yang. In her signed article titled “SeizingNewOpportunities for Common Development, usheringinaNewChapterin China-Guyana Relations”, A m b a s s a d o r Ya n g highlighted that in 2024, bilateral trade between China and Guyana reached US$1.4 billion, up 14.3% year-on-yearandnearlyfour times higher than in 2019 (Chinese Embassy Website 2025-05-10).
A notable sum of trade indeed, and combined with the wealth of people-topeople relationships formed between the Guyanese side and Chinese side in both countries, it could be said thattherelationshipbetween China and Guyana has ascendedtoanewheight.
Arguably, the great distancethatseparatesChina and Guyana should be a deterrent to a resilient and stable relationship However, this distance has consistently been overcome bythepeopleengagedinthe people exchange that takes place every year Guyanese are welcome in China as tourists, students and entrepreneurs Especially viatheConfuciusinstituteat the University of Guyana, considered to be the major gateway to education in Chinaforaspiringstudents. The strong magnetism that is exerted by China on
University level students at this time will only increase as time passes From experience, I can tell you confidentlythatthesecretto understanding China, whether it be business, society or culture is the understanding of the Chinese language. Speaking Chinese language enables individuals to communicate and understand their Chinese colleagues at a deeper level and to consume Chinese media without any barrier Chinese language proficiency would allow interested Guyanese to access better education and job opportunities within China and in the countries that host Chinese companies. Furthermore, a scholar, policy advisor or businessman cannot truly say that they understand China if they cannot dialogueamicablywiththeir Chinese colleagues using Mandarin Therefore, I
encourage everyone interested in China to begin their Chinese language learning journey at the Confucius Institute at the UniversityofGuyana. In 2023, there was a monumental meeting between His Excellency Dr MohamedIrfaanAliandHis Excellency Xi Jinping, President of the People's Republic of China in Chengdu. PresidentAli also held discussions with His Excellency Li Qiang, PremieroftheStateCouncil of the People's Republic of China.
The leaders had extensivedialogueand, inan interview, afterward, His Excellency Dr Mohamed IrfaanAlistated,“Allofthese things he (President Xi)
addressed, he addressed it from a global perspective, a global solution, any global solution must have global buyin."Guyanasubscribing to a global perspective can never be considered a misstep, especiallywhenthe globalperspectiveisfocused on development which Guyana greatly needs. This meetingcouldbeviewedasa significantpillaraddedtothe foundationofGuyanaChina relations.
We Guyanese should always be cognizant of the fact that China and the UnitedStatesshareaunique relationship and complex historybeingthetwolargest economies on this planet. In 2024, US exports to China were $1435 billion while, whileUSimportsfromChina reached $438 9 billion Clearly, these two countries have afinancial relationship that is significant. Rhetoric will flow and blows will be exchanged, however truly developing countries like Guyana could take note of thenatureoftherelationship (U.SandChina)andoptfora paththatismostbeneficialto Guyana while offering respectwhereitisdue.
It is my genuine hope that resilience and stability continue to characterize GuyanaChinarelations.
As an avid China watcher, I have seen every indication that China led developmentisbeneficialto receptive host countries From students to business leaders and governments all have potential to tap into Chinese led development, as longasweGuyaneseincrease our knowledge of China, its leadership and its developmentstrategies.

Theconstanthikeinthe USDollarhasbeenanissue sparking public debates over the last few months with various theories presented to explain the phenomenon.
Meanwhile, asked if it wassafeforthegovernment to pump revenues or US dollars into the economy without oil revenues being present, or whether the oil revenues coming into the system stabilise the US dollar, Jagdeo said the government has a large
capacity to intervene by selling foreign currency to the bank He said the government is carefully managing this aspect of the economyasitdoesnotwant anyleakages.
“It's getting even worse now with Trinidadian companies, as things get tougheroverthere
I saw Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves speaking about some of these issues andwehaveaproblemwith the currency not the instrument. So, the dollars are bit scarcer because we don'tselltoomuchdollars.

“But we have an enormous capacity to intervene in this regard and it's carefully calibrated enormous capacity,” he added
On Friday, opposition leader Aubrey Norton was asked how he thinks the critical issue could be resolved

Seeking further clarity on his solution, Norton was pointed to the justification given by Vice President Jagdeo who said that some businesses are buying the currency and keeping it for themselves, including possiblyChinesebusinesses.
Norton was then asked “Do you agree that the way in which these persons are allegedly purchasing this currency is having an effect on the availability of other currencies within the market?”
In response, he said “It clearlydoes, butdon'tforget, Jagdeo himself, when Granger came to power in 2015toldthemnottospend. Keepit, holdit.
So, it's a culture that has developed, I believe, in termsoftheChineseandthe Trinidadians in government, we will look at the details andact.”
Norton said while his party believes that foreign investorsmustoperatebased on rules, his party, when in government, willensurethat these rules are in place to reduce the 'currency hoarding'.
Norton says unbothered as no heavyweight has left PNCR
Despitetherecent departure of s e v e r a l members of the People's National Congress Reform (PNC/R), party leader Aubrey Norton says he
remains unbothered, i n s i s t i n g t h a t n o “heavyweight” has exited theparty
At a PNCR press conference on Friday, Norton dismissed concerns about the exit of Opposition Members of Parliament (MPs) Jermaine Figueira, Amanza Walton-Desir, Geeta Chandan-Edmond, Natasha Singh-Lewis, and current Region Four Chairman Daniel Seeram, amongothers.
“In the first place, none of them are heavy weights.
Heavyweights are determined by our party based on one, the work you do, and not solely the position you hold,” Norton said. Figueira, who recently
announced his departure from the PNCR, was the party's representative for Region 10, its traditional stronghold and he previously served as the shadow minister for the Ministry of Culture, Youth andSport.
However, Norton said that Figueira had long been inactive both within the party and in the Linden community
Norton noted that while Figueira held the shadow portfolio, several issues in the ministry went unaddressed. He said since assigning the post to Nima Flue-Bess, there has been moreprogress
“I invite you to go through the performance of Figueira and see what it suggeststoyou, thathewasa heavyweight performing incredibly for theAPNU. In fact, youth, sport and culture only became a focus after I removed
Figueira and placed Nima Flue-Bess and she is a heavyweight, inmyopinion, Figueirawastheoccupierof a seat, not a heavyweight,” saidNorton.
Further, the PNCR leader said the former MP failed to deliver on his r e s p o n s i b i l i t i e s , disqualifying him from “heavyweight” status Norton explained that among those who resigned, only Figueira held an executiveposition.
Yet, even in that capacity, Norton said Figueira had been largely absent from both party activities like the central
executive meetings and on thegroundwork.
“A heavy weight gets into the community Relate to people, do what has to be done.
There are many other things, butIdon'twanttoget intothem.
But to say to you, so far, none of the persons who would have departed have can carry with them the support from the APNU,” Nortonstated.
“When it comes to the likes of Jermaine Figueira, thetruthmustbetold, hehas not been a leading person in Region 10,” Norton told reporters.
When asked whether Figueira's departure could impactthePNCR'ssupport base, Norton dismissed the suggestion
He stated, “I do not believe him leaving will cause the party to lose votes, and a lot of the charitable work you're talking about wasn't done on behalf of the PNC ” As for Walton-Desir, who has since formed a new political party, Forward Guyana, Norton said she has potential but lacks politicalexperience.
“She'smadeherchoice, and it's within her right,” hestated
Regarding Region Four
Chairman Seeram, Norton said, “Daniel Seeram has never worked in the interest of the People's National Congress Reform Unfortunately, there is no recall legislation at the level of the RDC [Regional Democratic Council], so he could not have been removed.
But were there recall legislation Daniel Seeram would not have lasted a year because he was not doing anything in the interest of the People's National Congress Reform ”
On Singh-Lewis, Norton shared, “Natasha Singh Lewis said in real terms that she could not work with me as leader, because her friend Amna Ally said if she worked with me, the friendship is over She opted for the friendship I can't do anythingaboutthat ”

So, let me ask you straight: What exactly are they asking ExxonMobil to further do to all of us with thatcriminalcontractdeal,to play with us, smile with us, sing the NationalAnthem to we,ortostripusnaked? You answerthatquestion.
You are not dealing with a friendly investor here

They hired some kids who can't even manage a cake shop to manage a trillion-dollar oil industry
Ayuhseriousinthiscountry? Some of them still got baby teethintheirmouthsandyou are telling me they are managing Guyana's future? Whatmadnessisthis? What are we really doing to ourselves? Are we asking Exxontorobusquietly, orto screw us openly? Because based on how them managing this oil, it seems

Out of that, Guyana was supposedtogethalf, plusour 2% royalty So how much d

That is not just criminal, what is going on here is a nationalbetrayal.

But where are the four political leaders mentioned aboveonthis?

In any parliamentary democracy, the dissolution of parliamentisaconstitutional anddemocraticnecessity. In Guyana, the Constitution mandates that general and regional elections be held after Parliament has been dissolvedandwithinafixed period of time three months thereafter. But why is this so? And what does it say about the nature ofparliamentarygovernance andelectorallegitimacy?
At its core, the dissolution of Parliament bringsthecurrentlegislative sessiontoanend.InGuyana, this is done by way of a presidential proclamation issuedunderArticle70(2)of theConstitution.
Once Parliament is dissolved, all sitting Members of Parliament (MPs) effectively lose their seats. The country is no longer represented by a functioninglegislativebody. What follows is a period of politicaltransitionleadingto fresh elections and the formation of a new Parliament.
This process reflects a c o r e p r i n c i p l e o f parliamentary democracy: thatpowerultimatelyresides with the people Elected representatives serve for a fixed term—five years in Guyana’s case, unless Parliament is dissolved earlier After that term expires, the people must be
given a chance to renew or revoketheirmandate.
Parliament has to be dissolved so as to make parliamentaryseatsopenfor personstobeelectedtothese seats. In Guyana’s system, elections are not partial (except in cases of byelections)butgeneral.

be dissolved effectively vacating all seats and triggering the electoral machinery
The President’s constitutional duty to dissolveParliamentandhold elections within three monthsisavitalguardrailof democracy in Guyana. It ensures that leadership remains answerable to the people, that Parliament is regularlyrefreshedwithnew or renewed mandates, and that no government can govern indefinitely without consent.
Once Parliament is dissolved, Article 61 of the Constitutionkicksin.
This provision requires thatgeneralelectionsbeheld within three months of the dissolution unless an extensionisgrantedbytwothirdsofallelectedmembers oftheNationalAssembly W h y t h e t i g h t

A prolonged period without Parliament could i

The three-month limit ensures that the vacuum of representation is not left openindefinitely It protects the people’s r i g h t t o

The three-month limit imposedbytheConstitution ensures that no government can dissolve Parliament and then continue to govern without promptly returning to the electorate for a renewed mandate. It is a critical safeguard against executive overreach, designed to prevent any administrationfromabusing the dissolution process as a tactic to sideline parliamentaryscrutinywhile clingingtopower

Parliament and delay elections indefinitely, effectively ruling without legislative oversight or democratic legitimacy The three-month window thus upholds the fundamental democratic principle that a government must remain accountable to the people andcannotoperateaboveor beyondtheelectoralprocess.
The dissolution of Parliament is formalized through a proclamation by thePresident.Thisisnotjust a press release or announcement it is a constitutional act that signals the start of the electoralcycle.Itistypically accompanied by another or the same proclamation naming the date for elections.
In some instances, a
proclamation of dissolution may be issued prematurely, i.e.,beforethefive-yearterm ends. This usually happens when the government believes it no longer enjoys theconfidenceoftheHouse, or when it wishes to seek a newmandateonthestrength of its record or proposed futureagenda.
The President may also be forced to dissolve Parliamentearlyintheevent of a successful noconfidence vote under Article106(6).

Citizens, civil society advocates, and trade union representatives on Friday protesting infront of the Office of the President calling for the President to ensure the duties of Commissioner of Information Mr. Charles Ramson (Snr) are executed.
Charteredaccountantand attorney, Christopher Ram said it is insulting and disrespectful of President Irfaan Ali to deny Guyanese the constitutional right to access information.
Ram,whohasbeenadvocating for the release of information by Commissioner of Information, Justice (Ret'd) Charles Ramson Snr, led a peaceful protest outside the office of the president on Friday.
During the protest, Ram told Kaieteur News that he had written the head-of-state asking him to meet with a small group of civil society members to discuss their concerns.
However, according to Ram, the president has not had the 'decency to acknowledged the request.'
“And he has forced us into thisposition,Idon'tknowwhatthe president has to hide or if he sees this as some manly thing to do to denypeopletheconstitutionalright to access information, it is insulting, it is disrespectful and he isviolatinghisconstitutionaloath,” helamented.

Meanwhile, speaking with Kaieteur News, president of the Guyana Trades Union Congress (GTUC), Norris Witter said citizens want the president to act, since it is the head-of-state who swore in the commissioner of information.
He said for the president to not actandensurethatRamsoncarries out his duties would give meaning to his constitutional office According to him, it is not only a dereliction of duty but it also questions his suitability for the officeofpresident.
“This matter has serious implicationsfordemocracyandthe democratic process As the constitutional office holder of president, he has an obligation to respect the rule of law, he has an obligation to respect all statutory laws, hehasanobligationtorespect international conventions, and for Mr Ali as the president to fail to demand of the Commissioner of

Ram has been leading protests against the commissioner of information since early April, demanding that Access to Information Act, 2011 be “operationalised as it should be” andforthelegislationtobesubject to review and amendment, after morethanadecade.
Ram said over the years, he, along with former president of Transparency Institute of Guyana Inc (TIGI), Frederick Collins, former Auditor General (AG),

The attorney said Ramson has been playing games with applicants, putting his own interpretation of the Access to InformationAct.”
