OMAI aims to return to annual gold output of 300,000 ounces
President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Omai Gold Mines Corp., Elaine Ellingham, says the company is aiming to return to an annual gold output of 300,000ouncesasitchartsa pathtowardproductionatits brownfield project in Guyana.
Omai, a Canadian gold company, holds a 100% interest in the pastproducingOmaigoldproject inGuyana, locatedinRegion Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni) The project encompasses two orogenic gold deposits: the shear-hosted Wenot Deposit and the adjacent intrusive-hosted Gilt Creek Deposit. A 2024 Mineral Resource Estimate (MRE) for the gold project outlined 2.0 million ounces of gold indicated and 2.3 million ouncesinferred.
Speaking in a recent interview with Crux Investor,Ellinghamsaidthat while the company is focused on optimising
development plans, the cost of building a processing plant will be a major determinant in the scale of operations.
“I think the key thing is you have to build a mill there, rightyouhavetobuild a process plant and the, I thinkthebigquestionishow big is that plant, because a bigpercentageofthecostof a big large scale mine is the processing plant, so I think that’s going to drive the overallcost,”shesaid.
D e s p i t e t h e s e considerations, the CEO noted the site’s historic production figure remains the benchmark “Just remember [Omai] produced 300,000 ounces a year average before and I think that’s a good aspirational goaltohitagain,”shestated.

E l l i n g h a m a l s o highlighted the benefits of Omai being a brownfield project. She said that since the site was already cleared and does not fall within a regenerated natural environment, the permitting hurdles are relatively lower
“There’s no endangered species there and it’s not a natural environment which they recognize… Even in Guyana the permitting process is fairly quick but I wouldexpectustobeonthe leading edge of that timeline,”shesaid.

Earlier this year General Secretary of the PPP and Vice President, Bharrat Jagdeo, shared similar sentiments where he announced that future cash grants will be distributed if the PPP secures a next term inoffice.
“You will get your cash grants in the future too,” Jagdeosaidasheaddresseda gathering at Babu Jaan, Corentyne, Berbice. “Just imagine the next term in officehowgloriousthatwill be,”headded.
During his address, Jagdeo reaffirmed that the PPP stands by its commitments. “When we make these promises that PresidentAli spoke about in the next term, you best believe that they will be delivered,”henoted.
Meanwhile, Phillips recounted the party’s commitment made during

The Prime Minister also referred to the PNC-led opposition as “a coalition of lightweights” and “dead weights,” accusing them of racist remarks and a superficial approach to diversity and youth engagement.
He described the PPP/C as a “national and multiethnic party” representing “all the colours of Guyana, alltheracesofGuyana.”

Cost of living and food prices
In our lead article yesterday, we reported that poor Guyanese who do their shopping at the Bourda and Stabroek markets paid significantly more for some of the everyday food items than they did just three years ago, as prices for meats, vegetables, and seasonings continue to rise.
Infact,ananalysisoftheJuly3,2025pricelistfromthe GuyanaMarketingCorporation(GMC)showswidespread increases in both wholesale and retail prices for key commodities. Among the steepest climbs are seen in the meat category, where local chicken, which retailed for $381.55 per pound in 2020 and $488.33 in 2022, is now selling for up to $560 per pound at Stabroek Market and $520perpoundatBourda.

After considering their socialcondition, inaletterto thepressin2009Iconcluded that‘iftheindigenouspeople are within a reasonable time to share equitably in what Guyana has, they need to develop their specific political organisation and agenda and use their statistical weight to force its implementation. It is not precisely as I imagined, but if properly orchestrated, with Ms Juretha Fernandes as his prime ministerial candidate, Mr Aubrey Norton is suggesting an end to hundredsofyearsofrelative Amerindian marginalisation andpoverty
In March 1778, the first Great Durbar between representatives of the government of the day and Amerindians was held at
Fort Island. According to ARF Webber, ‘The Indian chiefs were presented with sticks with large silver knobs … hats with large silver pointed plumes, blue drill-coloured cloths, axes, ribbons, lookingglasses, and other articles, and asked to visit the Fort from time to time The visitors were thereafterentertainedinhigh revels, with ‘kiltum’ (cheap rum), bread, and provisions. On their part, the Indians promised to be faithful, and to render assistance whenever called upon ’ (Centenary History: HandbookofBritishGuiana’ 1931).
In 1793, Amerindian slaverywasabolishedandin 1802,aProtectorsofIndians was appointed to, inter alia, catch the slaves who had escaped the plantations Indeed, in about 1810, a Convention of Friendship was concluded between the British and the Caribs at whichtheGreatCaribChief Mahanarvinhispresentation to the Court of Policy stated that if no one was willing to purchase the slaves in his possessionhewouldhaveto kill them! In exchange for the promise of annual gifts,
the governor prevailed upon the chief to forswear such a radical solution. ‘These revels and presentations were maintained from year to year but discontinued when the menace of revolting Negro slaves no longerexisted.’(Ibid).
Given this backdrop, in 1828,beforetheabolitionof African slavery, William Hillhouse, Quarter Master GeneralofIndians, madethe following succinct but propheticstatementastothe trajectoryoftheAmerindian condition.
He claimed that ‘the Indian policy of the G o v e r n m e n t w a s transformingtheIndiansinto pauperized pensioners.’ He wasimmediatelysackedand ordered ejected and not to againtrespassonanyIndian settlement.Webbermadethe interesting comment that ‘Hillhousewasright;butthe wayofthereformer, likethat of the transgressor, who but transgresses against established things, must alwaysbehard’(Ibid).
Coming some 200 years afterthefirstDurbar, writing on the dawn of the Cooperative Republic, Hon. H. O. Jack, a minister in the
government of the People’s National Congress (PNC), bemoaned the fact that the hinterland remained totally underdeveloped. According tohim,‘Developmentofthe interior was actively discouragedsincethismight havemeantcompetitionwith the sugar planters and a threat not only to their financial but also to their socialandpoliticalposition.’ (Co-operative Republic, Guyana”1970).
The PNC did make a substantial effort: for example, the 1976 amendment to the Amerindian Act designated 77 areas comprising about 16% of Guyana as Amerindian land And, perhaps because of his determination to grow an authentic national culture and his rumoured Amerindianheritage,Forbes Burnham left significant national indigenous imageries: the Golden Arrowhead, Mashramani, theCaciqueCrown,Timehri (nowCheddiJagan)Airport, the Umana Yana, etc. The People’sProgressiveParty’s (PPP/C) government continuedwiththeeffortsin (Continuedonpage06)

Our youths must be reminded that during the year 1976 under the auspices of the People’s National Congress (PNC) later (Reform) free tertiary education was in effect until the late 1990’s when the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) assumed office, where tuition fees wereintroduced Years later President Irfaan Ali on October 10,

PPPhas best machinery for Guyana elections
DEAREDITOR
PPPisthemostdominant party in the country, and it has been this way for decades even during the period of dictatorship. It is the only party to win clear majorities in free and fair elections since universal suffrage. Also, Jagdeo and Irfaanaretheonlyleadersto truly claim mass appeal almost throughout the country over the last five years.Anyonewhodoesnot acknowledge these facts are fooling themselves. Irfaan and Jagdeo and the party’s dominance put them in a strongposition.
PPP’s strong position cannot be reduced to Jagdeo’spopularityalone. It is true that under his watch, the PPPhas strengthened its electoral operations, engineered broad-based social coalitions, and struck useful alliances. But Irfaan has also worked the ground with cross over appeal. The party has several crossovers becauseofIrfaan;leadersof a few small parties and defectors have endorsed Irfaan All of this has improvedhisandtheparty’s statureandpopularsupport.
Money and organisation are critical two factors that influence outcome of elections. The PPP has both on its side. The PPPhas the best campaign organization for election which is won with an effective election day machinery.Aparty will havetobewell-resourcedto implement its plan in order to be victorious provided it has a chance of victory; the PPPhasthemostfunds. The opposition APNU and the newly formedWIN lack the kind of organization of the PPP And the small parties have no chance of a victory Some will not even win a seat; their best bet is the joinder list, pooling their resources to get a seat or more or even to bury their ego and link up with one of theaboveparties.
As noted, elections are a b o u t m o n e y a n d
organization The betterfunded and organised party has the advantage. The PPP hasfarmoremoneythanany other party; they are in a much better position financially and in terms of resources. Also, they are emboldened by the fact that they are the incumbent, accessing state resources. It uses its tenure in office, incumbency, to its advantage. A lot of favours areusuallygivenoutinorder topersuadethevoter During anelectioncampaignalotof transactions go on. The governing PPP has seen it fit to focus on its a c h i e v e m e n t s a n d performance that it claims speaks for itself as the party encouragesvoterstore-elect it The government is claiming that it has worked, performed, and delivered and that the electorate should re-elect it based on the record. , As political parties vie for control of our country ahead of the critical September 1, 2025 General and Regional Elections, I havebeencloselyobserving theunfoldingdevelopments. Likemanycitizens,Isharea deep concern for the future of Guyana; a nation blessed withimmensenaturalwealth and now bolstered by oil revenues.
Our people are yearning forreal,lastingprogress.
These elections are not justanothercontest, theyare a defining moment. It is the people who will determine, through the ballot box, whichpartyisbestequipped to manage our national resourcesandchartajustand prosperous course for all.
The People’s Progressive Party/Civic(PPP/C)hashad fiveyearstoproveitsability to lead. In my view, they havefallenshort.
They have squandered an opportunity to transform Guyana meaningfully, and I believe they do not deserve anotherterm.
What’s even more troubling is witnessing political figures, some of whom once stood firmly in support of the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) and its core principles, now aligning themselves with the PPP/C. How can one justify embracing a party with a documented legacy of extrajudicial killings, corruption, institutional discrimination, and a repeated disregard for democraticnorms?
Let us not forget the erosionofourparliamentary democracy, the ongoing margina
communities, theworsening conditions for women and girls, and the widening gap in how oil wealth is distributed.
As campaign activities ramp up, with flags waving and posters everywhere, it’s disheartening to see people
being mobilized to intimidate opponents, deface property, and sow division Even more alarming are the violent confrontations and threats involving weapons at political events Such b e h a v i o
m u s t b e unequivocally condemned. Wearebetterthanthis.
At the heart of this election must be a clear, achievable vision for Guyana’sfuture.
The APNU has put forward a development plan grounded in unity and realisticprogress, onethatis already gaining traction among voters. Meanwhile, thePPP/Cappearstrappedin acycleofblame, focusedon attacking the Coalition’s 2015–2020recordinsteadof presenting solutions We must remember: the Coalition inherited broken institutions, decaying infrastructure, and an economy strained by 23 y e a r s o f P P P / C mismanagement.
Despitehavingnoaccess to oil revenues during its short tenure, the Coalition madetangibleprogresswith limitedresources.
Today, even with billions in oil income, many Guyanese still face daily struggles.
Just do a walk-through
South Georgetown, Albouystown, Agricola, or East and West Ruimveldt, and the signs of neglect are

everywhere.
The PPP/C’s muchtouted housing program has failed to deliver on its promises Of the 50,000 house lots pledged, t h o u s a n d s r e m a i n unallocated or inaccessible. Now, with elections looming, the government is scramblingtoshowcaseland distribution in a bid to gain favor
But Guyanese must not be misled by last-minute theatrics. APNU’s proposed “rent-to-own” housing model offers a more practical, dignified path to homeownershipforworking families.
To my fellow Guyanese: this election must not be treated casually We are at a crossroads that requires serious, deliberate decisionmaking.
The future of our nation depends on it. Let us vote w i t h p u r p o s e f o r accountability, fairness, and arealchanceatabetterlife.
Our right to vote was won through struggle and sacrifice.
Letushonorthatlegacy Letusnotforgetvictimsstill awaiting justice, like the grieving parents of young Adriana Younge. We owe it tothem, andtoourselves,to stand for justice, unity, and meaningful change. Guyana must rise—stronger, fairer, and more united than ever before.

Fernandes: ending indigenous marginalisation’...
Bank 2009 Country Assistance Strategy stated that: ‘The Amerindians, the minority group largely residing in isolated rural interiorareas, experiencethe highestpovertyincidencein the country (around 78 percent).
This ethnic group represents only 9.2 percent of the population in Guyana but contains one third of the extremelypoorpopulation.’
The 1973 ‘Manifesto of the Quechua and Aymara Indians’ofBoliviamadethe seminalpoint.

‘Neither formal education nor party politics nor technical advancement has brought about any significant change in rural life. We peasants are convinced that development will take place in the countryside and in the country as a whole only when we become the designers of our own progress and masters of our destiny.’
Today, after 30 years o f P P P r u l e , t h e indigenous people are still the poorest, and where governance is concerned, the president of the Amerindians Peoples’ Association (APA) at the 2025 United Nations Permanent Forum on indigenous issues made a plea for help from the internationalcommunity Among many other things, he claimed that ‘while the government
o f t e n h i g h l i g h t e d indigenous community benefits from the low carbon development strategy this narrative does not tell the full story the process in arriving to this
agreement where deeply flawed; again we were not properly consulted on how our forest and land would be used in this scheme we were not allowed to consent to this program with the mandate of our peopleandwewerenotpart of any negotiation to determine how our people could have benefited from the national initiative according to our needs prior to the carbon sale agreement.’
‘The government current practices violate the indigenous people’s collective rights to self determination and land ownership our sacred lands that have been handed down through generations with care and reverence are being stripped, our rivers poisoned We also ask that the Permanent Forum monitor the government’s process to ensure that
Guyana Indigenous Peoples are part of this national exercise that will determine the future of our rights, culture and lives (https://nycaribnews com/
un-amerindians-ofguyana-have-no-rights-toland-title-forum-says/)
As the oligarchy that controls the largely East Indian-supported PPP seeks to entrench itself in government, the story has been similar for other ethnicgroups
As noted above, urgent constitutional reforms to make the p o l i t i c a l s y s t e m inclusive is vital and so too are transparent efforts to identify and deal with ethnic, gender, s e x u a l a n d o t h e r disparities
But in the meantime, the present constitution could facilitate a shared vision and given the opportunity, Mr Norton should use it to create sufficient policy space to put an end to indigenous marginalisation and relative poverty by their becoming, within the ethnic context of Guyana, ‘the designers of their own progress and masters of theirdestiny’

AFC in talks with other parties for joinder list - Hughes
Leader of the Alliance for Change, Nigel Hughes saidFridaythathispartyisin active discussion with “like minded parties” to form a joinderlist.
A joinder list is an agreement, making new partiessubjecttothetermsof anexistingpactasiftheyhad
riginally signed it
Commonly, it is used in the context of shareholder agreements, where new persons, investors or parties acquiring shares need to be bound by existing rules and obligations In signing a joinder agreement, the new party ‘’joins’ the original
agreement which ensures that they are subjected to all ofitstermsandconditions.
At the party’s weekly press conference, Hughes was asked if his party was considering such an agreement.
“We have been in discussions with like-

minded parties to look at that. GECOM has provided uswiththeirinterpretationof thelaw,”hetoldjournalists.
He said whether or not the interpretation is consistent with the law, the ruling of the court is an entirely different matter altogether Nevertheless, the AFCisinactivediscussions with other parties to explore ajoinderlist.Onesuchparty is the Assembly for Liberty andProsperity(ALP).
In the 12th parliament, there was a joinder list comprising the Liberty and Justice Party (LJP), A New andUnitedGuyana(ANUG) and The New Movement (TNM).However, theparties experienced some setbacks when Dr Asha Kissoon of TNM refused to vacate the seat upon the completion of herservice, asagreedbythe parties.
Lastmonth, formerlegal advisor of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM), Kurt Da Silva clarified that the law providesnoflexibilityinthe allocation of seats under the joinder list system, emphasising that there is no provision for sharing seats betweenparties.
Da Silva explained that the Representation of the People Act (ROPA) clearly defines the joinder list and leaves “no room for deviationontheallocationof seats.”Hestressedthatwhile GECOM must formally address the matter, “it can only do so in accordance

with the provisions of the law.” Da Silva said in the case of how it should treat ‘joinder lists’, referred to in RoPA as a ‘combination of lists,’ “the law is very clear andleavesnoroomforeither GECOM or the parties themselves to treat with the allocation of seats in a differentmanner.”
The issue of joinder lists was raised by especially small parties during a briefing hosted by GECOM late last month. The parties had expressed strong doubts a b o u t G E C O M ’ s preparedness, raising concerns abou
he unresolved joinder list mechanism.
Some parties criticised GECOM for its inaction on the issue, which has been ongoing for about two years without resolution Many parties emphasised that the joinder list system could give smaller and newer parties a better chance at gainingseatsinParliament.
In a release last week,
GECOMclarifiedthatwhile two or more parties can come together to form a joinder list, the combination is treated as one list for the purposeofseatallocation.
GECOM explained that in the case of a seat within the combination, the party with the largest number of surplus votes will get that unallocatedseat.
In the case of only one seathavingbeenwonbythe combination, that seat shall go to the party that received the largest number of votes amongallofthepartiesinthe combination.
The elections body said each party in the joinder r e t a i n s i t s o w n representative and deputy representative for the purpose of extraction of candidates to become members of the national assembly
Therefore, it is only the representative or deputy representative of the party(ies) that are allocated seatscandosuchextraction.

Guyana’s political titans and the rise of AZMOism
Guyana’s two political
titans the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) and the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPPC) have lost their bearings. They are adrift, and more dangerously, they are being seen as indistinguishable in their ideologicalemptiness.
Buthowdidthishappen?
The PNCR once carried itself as the vanguard of cooperative socialism, a stern nationalist experiment that married autarky with autocracy Theideologywas flawed bloated with slogans and drained of practicality—but it had a certain tragic coherence. It promisedanewsociety
When the Cold War ended and the taps of socialist benefaction dried up, the PNC was forced to reckonwithitsowndisaster

The party’s name changed.Thephilosophydid not evolve it simply
flipped Cooperative socialism was out; neo-
liberal orthodoxy was in. Prominent businessmen were invited into the party leadership. The“Reform”in the party’s name signified nothing more than the embracing of global capital, without a corresponding vision of what kind of societythePNCRnowstood for It was the sort of ideological shallowness that had no anchorage in either memoryoraspiration.
The PPP, once the embodiment of Jagan’s ideological stubbornness, fared no better Cheddi had long believed in a form of socialism with a moral face, a doctrine that paid homage to the poor but never flirted with radicalism. After his death, the party, stripped of its last ideological conscience, fell into the hands of a more calculating breed of technocrats and profiteers Neo-liberalism was no longer tempered—it was canonized Markets were liberalized, deals were made behind closed doors, a n d t h e b u s i n e s s class once the wary o p p o n e n t o f t h e PPP—becameitsbenefactor and, intime, itsmaster What we are left with today are two parties whose ideological identities have collapsedintothesamepit:a tired neo-liberalism that has failedtodeliver Theyspeak indifferenttones—onewith the clipped technocratic
efficiency of spreadsheets, the other with the nostalgic bray of burnt-out nationalism but their policies differ little. Both have surrendered to the imperatives of global capital. Both have presided overaneconomythatseems to dance more than it delivers. And both, more crucially, have failed to address the growing chasm betweenwealthandpoverty
The PNCR’s great afflictionisnotmerelythatit haslostpower, butthatithas lost belief belief in anything larger than the persons who seek to lead it. The party, once cloaked in the rhetoric of cooperative socialism, now flounders in a void where no unifying ideology exists to bind its members to a common cause In this vacuum, personalities emerge as substitutes for principles, and factionalism becomes inevitable. Persons do not rallyaroundideas;theyrally around themselves The resultisapartyinpermanent rupture, a house divided by ambitionandvanity
By contrast, the PPPC has not descended into such chaos, not because it has held fast to its founding ideals, but because it has been quietly commandeered by a new ideological class the bourgeois elite—who, through wealth andinfluence, haveimposed

Job creation, infrastructure drive youth support for PPP/C
During the People’s
Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) election campaign launch on SundayattheKittyMarketSquare, many young people turned out, citing infrastructural development in the country and increased job opportunities as key reasons for theirsupport.
Kaieteur News spoke with several attendees to understand why Guyana’s youth are rallying behind the PPP/C ahead of the upcomingpolls.Onesupporter,28year-old Emmanuel Luther from Berbice, highlighted the government’s focus on education andinfrastructure.
“I came out to support the PPP becausetheyarepeopleofpromise and, theyshowthepeoplethatthey never go back on their word and teach young people to push themselvestodobetter.”
Askedaboutthebenefitshehas receivedduringthePPPC’stenure, Lutherresponded,“Ithasbenefited me workwise. They built a lot of roads, alotofschoolsformykids, and we’ve all benefited from the major development happening in the country right now. There are things I never expected the governmenttodo, andit’samazing toseethattheyaretrulylookingout forthepeople.”
Luther, who has been supportingthePPP/Cforabouttwo years, expressed satisfaction with the party’s performance. “From supporting the PPP to now, I can saythatIamgratefulforwhereIam today Myfamilyisokayandthat’s the most important thing,” he added.
Twenty-two-year-old Makeda Williams from East Bank Demerara, said she has backed the PPP/C for the last two years. “I’m

here to support the PPP because I have experienced a lot of change within the five-year mark and I’m here to show my support for the nextterm.”
Williams shared her personal gains under PPP’s governance. “I have been able to obtain a house, my own company, and better road accessthroughourstreet,”shesaid. While satisfied overall, she called for further improvements in healthcare under another PPP/C term.
Georgetown resident Kadeem Gordon, 30, described joining the PPP/C as a “no brainer.” “The policies are for everyone, old, young, and people looking for opportunityineverysector It’sano brainer… it is the only party that has the interest of Guyanese at heart ” He highlighted several policieshesupports, particularlyin theareaofeducation.
“We have seen tertiary educationbecomefree,we’veseen the GOALscholarships, and at the CSEC level, the government is paying for eight subjects,” he explained. “There are so many investments being made in different schools, and they are making these investments so that students can become more educated and equipped in terms of choosingwhattheywanttodowith theirlife.”
Whenaskedaboutthepersonal benefitshehasreceivedasayouth under the current government, he responded confidently: “I got my cash grant, I’m a GOAL scholar, and I’m now studying Law at the University of Guyana. Through GOAL, I’ll also be pursuing a master’s in International Law.” He also pointed to infrastructure improvements, particularly road development, as another key

benefit.“Wehavebetterroadsnow With better roads, your food becomescheaperbecausetrucksno longer have to drive on bad roads, whichincreasesmaintenancecosts and, ultimately, thecostofgoods.” He concluded by expressing full confidence in the current administration, stating, “this government has demonstrated its abilitytoleadthepeople.”
In Berbice, 25-year-old Karen Luther echoed similar views: “I cameoutheretosupportthePPP/C because of the changes in a lot of youngpeople’slives.Isawalotof drastic changes that created job opportunities for young people. theystandontheirpromisebecause Iremembercoupleyearsagowhere APNU/AFC has promised young people jobs and they did not fulfill it.And when the PPP/C came into power, jobs were being available foryoungpeople,”shesaid.
When asked what changes she believes could be made for the country’s future development, Luther expressed strong confidence in the current administration. “So far, they are doing everything that needs to be done, and they know what the peopleneed,”shesaid.“Evenwhen they go back in power, I have 100 percenttrustinthemthattheywill do even more, things that will surpriseus.”
Echoingsimilarsentimentswas SeonWilliams, who has supported the PPPC for just over 3 years. He pointedtoadvancementsacrossthe country “I have seen rapid developmentsuchasinfrastructure and community development,” he said Highlighting the party’s impact on young people, Williams added, “They have created job opportunities for young adolescents, suchasroadcontracts. No one in the village can say they don’thaveajob.”
Michael Desouza, a young father attending the rally with his family underlined the appeal of newinfrastructureandjobcreation. “I have seen a lot of development throughout the country Their policieshavebenefitedmeandmy family such as workwise. they can continue within the same line,” he said.
A longstanding supporter also voicedherapprovalofthePPP/C’s policies and progress Pamela Sugrin, 31, shared her lifelong supportfortheparty, saying,“from smallgoingup,IwasPPP I’veseen progress.In2015,whenAPNUwas in power, they took away the cash grantanditwasveryhard.SonowI am encouraging young people to support the PPP, it is a lifetime change.”

AFC wants party reps, observers to scrutinise encoding of candidates lists
Aheadofthesubmissionofthe lists of candidates by the various politicalpartiestoday, theAlliance for Change is urging the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) to ensure that there is scrutiny by partyrepresentativesandobservers oftheliststhatwillbeencoded.
In a statement to the media the party said Sunday evening, “procedurally, when the chief electionofficerreceivesthelistsof candidates from political parties, they are passed on to a team of encoders to verify the information forcandidatesandnominators, and
toensurethenumberofnominators for each region is accurate. Typically, theselistsareverifiedin the order in which they are submittedtotheCEO.”
The party explained that the verification process is done to ensure candidates and nominators do not appear on multiple lists, hence each party’s list is verified against the ones that came before them.
“We wish to emphasise the importanceofGECOMprocessing thelistsofcandidatesintheorderof submission to ensure the process

remainsfairandtransparent.Given GECOM’s pattern of favourable actions towards the Peoples Progressive Party and the fact that the chief election officer distorted
the order of contesting parties camping outside the Umana Yana, weareconcernedthattheencoding of the lists may also be manipulated,”itsaid.
Furthermore, as a contesting party interested in fairness and transparency in the elections,AFC is calling on GECOM to allow scrutinyoftheverificationprocess frombeginningtoend.

“Today I am imposing sanctions on UN Human Rights Council Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese for her illegitimate and shameful efforts to prompt (International Criminal Court) action against U.S. and Israeli officials, companies, and executives,” Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in a statement.
In a post on X late last Wednesday, Albanese wrote that she stood “firmly and convincingly on the side of justice, as I have always done,” without directly mentioning the U.S. sanctions. In a text message to Al Jazeera, she was quoted as dismissing the U.S. move as “mafia style intimidation techniques.”
Albanese, an Italian lawyer and academic, has called on states at the U.N. Human Rights Council to impose an arms embargo and cut off trade and financial ties with Israel while accusing the U.S. ally of waging a “genocidal campaign” in Gaza.
Israel has faced accusations of genocide at the International Court of Justice and of war crimes at the ICC over its devastating military assault on Gaza. Israel denies the accusations and says its campaign amounts to self-

The United Nations special rapporteur on the Palestinian territories, Francesca Albanese, in Madrid on June 23. defense after a deadly October 2023 Hamas attack.
In a report published earlier this month, Albanese accused over 60 companies, including major arms manufacturers and technology firms, of involvement in supporting Israeli settlements and mili-
tary actions in Gaza. The report called on companies to cease dealings with Israel and for legal accountability for executives implicated in alleged violations of international law.
Albanese is one of dozens of independent human rights
experts mandated by the United Nations to report on specific themes and crises. The views expressed by special rapporteurs do not reflect those of the global body as a whole.
Rights experts slammed the U.S. sanctions against Albanese. Dylan Williams, vice president for government affairs at the Center for International Policy think tank, labeled them as “rogue state behavior” while Amnesty International said special rapporteurs must be supported and not sanctioned.
“Governments around the world and all actors who believe in the rule-based order and international law must do everything in their power to mitigate and block the effect of the sanctions against Francesca Albanese and more generally to protect the work and independence of Special Rapporteurs,” Am-
nesty International’s Secretary General Agnes Callamard, a former UN special rapporteur, said. Since returning to office in January, President Donald Trump has stopped U.S. engagement with the U.N. Human Rights Council, extended a halt to funding for the Palestinian relief agency UNRWA and ordered a review of the U.N. cultural agency UNESCO.
He has also announced U.S. plans to quit the Paris climate deal and the World Health Organization. His administration-imposed sanctions on four judges at the ICC in June in retaliation over the war tribunal’s issuance of an arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and a past decision to open a case into alleged war crimes by U.S. troops in Afghanistan.
AFC wants party reps, observers to scrutinise...
From page 15 done as orderly as possible.”
He said he understands GECOM is likely to be at the location around midnight on Sunday, but currently there are four political parties camping outside of the Umana Yana.
The APNU arrived first, AFC second, followed by ALP, and then Forward Guyana.
“…and we really believe that this country has reached a stage where everyone ought to know what the specific procedures are at every
given stage in the electoral process. So, we shouldn’t be hearing on Saturday or Friday or Sunday what the procedure is for the presentation of the list, because this is particularly important, and it has consequences for the persons who are on the list,” he said. It is in the interest of this that the AFC is repeating the call it made on July 1, when it wrote GECOM to let all parties and the public know “specifically what the procedures are for the submission of the list.”

From page 12 they don’t see profitability, if they don’t see success. And the world, is converging on Guyana today to invest here because they see a strong, stable government…,” Ali said.
Among the key initiatives announced was a plan to guarantee home ownership for every Guyanese family, with continued support through steel and cement initiative, tax rebate, and new incentives to reduce construction costs and lower interest rates on housing loans. He said the goal was to ensure no citizen is left renting in the future.
Ali added: “Over the next five years, we will reform and modernise our financial sector so that you can have greater ease at doing businesses in the banks and across this country, we have to remove the burden that you go through.”
He also pledged to introduce a National Development Bank, and provide zero-interest loans for small and medium enterprises.
Further, Ali also spoke about a portal giving citizens real-time access to bank ac-
counts and transactions from the comfort of their homes.
He noted that his administration will continue the push for a digital economy.
He also outlined plans for further integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in the various sectors and government entities.
Ali said, “Artificial intelligence is an important part of the development strategy of any nation.”
In relation to income generation, Ali said the PPP is not only focused on increased salaries.
“We want to widen the stream of income for every single family, because you can’t grow prosperity only on salaries,” he said.
Ali said PPP plans to create additional forms of income.
He committed to creating co-investment opportunities between citizens and the state, explaining that government will create financial vehicles offering returns of 10% to 12%, and expanding the income base beyond traditional salaries.
Moreover, Ali said in his next term his administration will also invest to create an ecosystem for sports and entertainment.
He also disclosed that the PPP plans training for coaches and the construction of the best facilities for athletes to excel.
He said the investments will ensure that the athletes and entertainers have the necessary facilities to grow.
“That is why we will build an indoor arena that can host any international event, MMA, boxing, fitness, Brittany Spears, Rihanna, because that is the future that will create the next wave of excitement,” Ali noted.
Mining and agriculture
Moreover, Ali outlined plans for the mining and agriculture sectors.
He said that small miners will benefit from more access to lands, incentives, and capital support.
“Over the next five years, we’ll position the mining sector for long term success and unlock its potential and increase small scale miners participation in the sector.
We want our smallscale miners to grow faster and better by making more lands available, by giving them more incentive and by supporting them and getting their capital so they
can invest.”
As it relates to the agriculture sector, Ali said the PPP intends to open hundreds of thousands of new acres of farmland, construct cold storage facilities in every region, and develop a world-class food terminal to export local produce globally.
He said, “We will expand value creation in agriculture, specifically targeting young people and women, because we want more of our young people and women to be involved in food production and in the agricultural sector.”
Further, he reminded citizens that their vote is their dignity and not to sell that dignity.
“When you vote, you’re voting for your children, future, your family future, your community, future, your country, future, and anyone who believes that they can pay you for that dignity is someone who is classless, someone who has no dignity,” he said.
“We will not just win, we will make history, but for that to happen…come out to the polls and you mark your x in a box next to the cup,” Ali said.

OAS Chief Albert Ramdin makes Haiti his top priority
(Jamaica Gleaner)Finding lasting solutions to Haiti’s deepening political, security, and governance crises is a top priority for Organisation of American States (OAS) Secretary General,AmbassadorAlbert Ramdin, during his 20252030tenure.
“I have made Haiti a priority and we are working veryhardonHaiticurrently That is an effort that goes to the heart of the OAS, in terms of its core principles, about democracy, human rights, security and about development. And in Haiti, regretfully, all these issues are challenged at the moment, in the absence of a legitimate government,” he told The Sunday Gleaner in aninterviewlastweek.
Forced migration from Haiti to nearby Caribbean nationslikeJamaicaandThe Bahamas underscores the regionalimpactofthecrisis. He praised CARICOM foritsworkinthesearchfor solutions.
“CARICOM has done great work in facilitating a process of governance by b r i n g i n g t o g e t h e r stakeholders to form the Transitional Presidential Council as a form of governance in absence of electionsofaparliamentand a cabinet government I know that we need to work towardsthatend.ButIsalute CARICOM’s efforts of the Eminent Persons Group, the CARICOM chairpersons of Guyana and Suriname and

Long-termstrategy
TheOAS,headded, will align its efforts with CARICOM’s framework and contribute to a broader, long-term strategy under a five-pillar ‘Haitian Road Map’ developed with Haitianauthorities.Thefirst critical focus: restoring security, especiallyaccessto vulnerablecommunities.
“We need better security in Haiti We need access roads to people who are in need of assistance to be free We needtheportssecure

The OAS is also working on citizen

In addition to the OAS, other regional and internationalagencies–such as the Inter-American Development Bank, Pan A m e r i c a n H e a l t h

Beyond food and water, Ramdin said there must be focus on education, healthcare, and getting childrenbackinschool.
“We need to get the political stakeholders which have been mobilised by CARICOM to develop a forward-looking agenda for
Haiti, in terms of political andconstitutionalreform,as wellaseconomicrebuilding. Key issues on health and education and security should lead us to elections,” he explained. Despite its unique challenges, Haiti shares common issues with other Caribbean nations –climate change, debt burdens, migration, and underdeveloped education systems – which demand a unifiedregionalresponse.

Former Nigerian leader Muhammadu Buhari dies aged 82
(BBC) Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari, who has died at age 82 in a Londonclinic, was a former military ruler and self-styled converted democrat who returned to power through elections but struggled to convince Nigerians he could deliver onthechangehepromised.
Never a natural politician, he was seen as aloof and austere. But he retained a reputation for personalhonesty-ararefeat forapoliticianinNigeria.
After three failed attempts, Buhari achieved a historic victory in 2015, becoming the country’s first
opposition candidate to defeat an incumbent In 2019, he was re-elected for anotherfour-yearterm.
Buhari had always been popular among the poor of the north (known as the “talakawa” in the Hausa language) but for the 2015 campaign, he had the advantage of a united opposition grouping behind him.
Many of those who supported him thought his military background and disciplinarian credentials were what the country needed to get to grips with theIslamistinsurgencyinthe north. Buhari also promised
to tackle corruption and nepotismingovernment, and create employment opportunities for young Nigerians.
But his time in office coincided with a slump in global oil prices and the country’s worst economic crisisindecades.
His administration also came under fire for its handling of insecurity While campaigning he had promised to defeat

Muhammadu Buhari was reported to have travelled to the UK in April for a routine medical check-up but subsequently fell ill
