Since its return to “mining-

Omai's latest assays include 2.67 gramspertonne(g/t)ofgoldover21.4 metres, 2.31 g/t over 24.6 metres, and 5.47 g/t over 9.7 metres. The results come from five drill holes totalling 3,189metres,contributingtoatotalof 17,109 metres drilled across 28 holes so far this year This surpasses the company's initial 15,000-metre target fortheprogram.

Moreover, the company said that drilling continues with two rigs on Wenot and a third rig on the long Gilt Creek-Wenot drill hole, designed to test the upside potential of both deposits, aswellasexploringbetween the two adjacent related orogenic gold deposits.Followingthecut-offdatefor the resource study, drilling will continue on Wenot, but more focused

on Wenot extensions as well as on earlier-stage targets across the Omai gold property that holds potential for near-surfacesatellitepits.

This publication recently reported that Omai has discovered a new gold zone. Since 2021, the company has established the Omai Gold Project as one of the fastest-growing and wellendowed gold camps in the prolific Guiana Shield greenstone belt. In February 2024, Omai announced an updatedMREof2.0millionouncesof gold indicated and 2.3 million ounces inferred, comprising both the Wenot open pit deposit and the adjacent Gilt Creek underground deposit. This was followed by an initial baseline PEAin April 2024, which contemplated an open pit-only development scenario and included only 45 per cent of the OmaiGoldProjectMRE.ThePEAfor theWenotdepositoutlinesanopen-pit operation producing 1.84 million ounces over a 13-year mine life. Two shuttered industries

DearEditor,

The thread of similarity between T&T"s proposed reopening of its Petrotrin refinery and our then shuttered sugar estates were the economic benefits to be derived by families and communitiesandthecoming alive of local economies,

stagnated by the respective closures.

For these communities these re-opening is a beacon of hope. However, strong advocatingvoices of several business chambers across T&T, while in support and optimistic about the reopening of the refinery,

urgedcaution, prudence, and itmustnotbedonehastilyor for political gain (Daily Express June 24). Such factors as financial viability, funding (which it was felt should come from private sector or foreign investors)

DearEditor,

Did a storm in a teacup brew in the US, over what some opinionated as a possible abuse of power and an illegal direction for action, without seeking permissionfromaconsensus body, Congress? The President of the United States of America, Donald Trump, the man who wants tomakeAmericagreatagain, explicitlysaidthatIsraeland Iran don't know what they are doing. His unhesitating language was profane and curt. He may as well be referring to the members of the Democratic Party who are split in their decisions to impeach Donald Trump in a third attempt. Yes, joining the Republicans were 128 Democrats including Nancy Pelosi who voted against impeachment and 79 Democrats, including Hakeem Jeffries, voted for impeachment. Trump's potent dialect maypotentiallyinsinuatethe descriptive crumbling relationship with the PNC and the AFC. The PNC is playing big and wanting to stand alone in the upcoming election but then, keeping the door open for an AFC arrival. The AFC stood tall andlonesome, onlytosuffer from defectors crossing the floor towards the PNC. Key membersfromthePNChave also resigned to join the PPP/C party They are now beingeyedassourgrapes! When Trump says “Don't,” countries ought to pay attention and do as he says. The no-nonsense man ispushinghisweightaround the globe and walking on toesinhisjourney ThePNC learnt the hard way back in 2020. Pompey told Granger to“stepaside”withhisband of rebels, failing which, the Trump administration will place “visa restrictions on individuals responsible for or complicit in undermining democracy in Guyana ” Those who don't hear will feel.Therestishistory Trump's message is “America first ” Yet he allowsIsraeltobetheguinea pigintheIraniansagabefore b o m b i n g t w o k e y underground uranium enrichment plants. Or, did his comments consist of conspicuousclarity?

America maintains permanent interests and never permanent friends

America helped Burnham to gainpowerin1964andkept Jagan out in the wilderness for 28 years. But it was the US who was instrumental in securing Jagan's return to power in 1992. Again, an American oil company brokered the worst possible agreement with the PNC in thehistoryoftheoilindustry

As the story goes, it was the Americans whose input denied the very PNC from gettingtheirhandsontheoil money!

America (Exxon), has vested interest in Guyana's oil and gas industry which can transform “the largely underdeveloped Englishspeaking nation from one of South America's most polarized and poorest into possibly one of its richest,” according to a 2020 Rystad

Energy report Political upheavals can definitely antagonize production operations and deescalate much needed revenue to finance major ongoing infrastructure projects. Did the Americans smell the rat and knew that the corrupted PNC cannot be trusted thus, institutingvisasanctionsand preventing the PNC from carrying out their devious plans?

Trump was regarded as the Big Brother to the small nations until the 2 days NATO Summit this week which changed that reference to “Daddy.” On assuming office, the American President had vowed to end the war betweenRussiaandUkraine without any success to date. His conversation with PakistanandIndiahadsome significance which saw a cease fire after 4 days of military unpleasantries between the nuclear-armed neighbors Pakistan had planned to nominate Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize Award in October In less than 24 hours, Pakistan condemned Trump for attacking Iran and their politicians are calling on the Pakistani government to withdrawthatnomination.

There is no role for a father figure in

DearEditor,

A report published in Stabroek News on June 6 givesthepublicalookatthe exchange between President Ali and entrepreneur Azruddin Mohamed about several issues. What stands out immediately is the contrast between the two accounts. One discusses a high-value car, reportedly worth $50 million in a specific currency, while the other barely touches on the topic and avoids direct quotes, using vague and evasivelanguage.Whenyou look at the President of Guyana's track record on similar matters, some consistent patterns begin to emerge.

When a minister had fallen foul of public opinion and had been accused of indecent approaches to a woman of the indigenous nation, you will remember thatthisministerapproached the President, who, by his own account, is constantly beingapproached.Heenjoys the role of a father figure who resolves difficulties. In thatcase, hesaidtheminister approachedhimandaskedto be put on ministerial leave. There was no enquiry into the justification of the accusation against the minister I don't know if the minister admitted an offence.

Mr Anil Nandlall, the Attorney General, informs us that he is relying on the article in the Burnham

the Constitution

Constitution, which designates the President as “the supreme executive authority,” a provision that remains in effect and requires a referendum to change The supreme executive authority can take various guises, sometimes resembling Father Christmas, as a father figure who resolves difficulties or intervenes. There is no role for a father figure in the Constitution. However, the incidentregardingtheluxury car discloses an unhealthy permissiveness with all its implications There is nothing in the President's response that suggests they are referring to any specific car. This is a lack of transparency Why go to that length to obscure the topic of discussionbetweenthishead of state and a citizen? The head of state is entering an areaofdecision-makingthat isnotconstitutionallywithin hispower ThePresidentwas the first to disclose that the Mohamed family had provided security for him. The President

may treat those who can offer him security and those who cannot with equal consideration. He may be that kind of person Objectively, it must be presumed that one can outweigh the other I am not makingajudgmenthere, but I will make a concrete proposal because of this exploration.

The second feature of this transaction is that we don'tknowhowthisaffected the police. The state police are the individuals responsible for providing various security services to the president. According to the account, a private party intervened and assumed a functionthatthestateshould have provided. We do not know how it affects the police security department that is supposed to protect thePresident.

When we consider these factors together and reflect on the same president who acted unconstitutionally and dissolved the Police Service Commission because there were not enough people recommendedforpromotion who were friendly, we can see a pattern. We see a tangled web and many predispositions to an unhealthy relationship are developing. East La Penitence residents without water for two weeks - GWI

On Thursday, frustrated residents contacted Kaieteur Newscomplainingaboutnot having access to water for nearly four weeks One resident explained that she was forced to spend money onbottledwatertocarryout basic household tasks such as cooking, cleaning, and bathing. Contacted on the issue, the Chief Executive Officer ofGuyanaWaterInc.(GWI), Shaik Baksh, said that the ongoing water disruption in East La Penitence and surrounding areas is not GWI's responsibility Instead, he attributed the issue to road construction works being carried out by the Ministry of Public Works. “They are getting water but there is low pressure Because of the worksgoingon, especiallyin SussexStreetandsoon, pipe works are going on. The Ministry of Public Works is carrying out road construction, expanding the road. They have to remove

He further stated, “GWI is not doing any of the pipe works there, but we're observing the process because we have an interest. I hope they finish quickly b e c a u s e a l o t o f interconnections are being done.”

When asked whether GWI would implement any measures to assist residents in the interim, Baksh responded, “They have to wait until the works are completed. We cannot do anything else. EU leaders for end to Gaza war

European Union leaders meeting in Brussels have c o n d e m n e d t h e “catastrophic humanitarian situation” in Gaza, but were unable to unite on means of pressuring Israel to end the war

The jaguar, the ballot, and the Constitution

By now, the countryiscaught in a full-blown existential crisis: a political partyhasapparentlydaredto adopt the jaguar as its symbol. The horror! The scandal! The… wait, is that evenillegal?

This little uproar, which feels like a cross between a courtroom drama and a wildlife documentary, has led some to clutch their constitutionalpearls.Solet’s take a deep breath and examinewhetherourfanged feline friend—the majestic jaguar is actually offlimitsasapoliticalsymbol.

Spoiler:it’snot.

Let’s start with the basics: What exactly are the national symbols of Guyana?

According to the Constitution, those sacred emblems include The Golden Arrowhead (our flag), The Coat of Arms (which has a jaguar on it—more on that later), The National Anthem and The NationalPledge.

Nowhere—let me repeat this for the folks flipping throughtheConstitutionlike it’stheDeadSeaScrolls—is “jaguar” mentioned as a national symbol. The jaguar is the national animal, yes, but there’s a big difference between being the national animal and being an official national symbol. After all, thenationalbirdistheCanje Pheasant, but no one’s

stoppingthatfromstarringin wildlife commercials Symbols are codified in Article 4 to 6A of the Constitution.Ifit’snotthere, it’s not a national symbol. Period.

A national symbol is an officially designated emblem like a flag, anthem, coat of arms, or pledge—that represents the identity, sovereignty, and values of a nation and is recognizedinlaw, suchasin the Constitution. A national animal, ontheotherhand,is a chosen creature that e m b o d i e s c e r t a i n characteristics admired by the country (like strength or resilience)butdoesnotcarry thesamelegalorceremonial weight, nor is it necessarily protected from public or politicaluseinthesameway asofficialnationalsymbols.

“But,” you say, “the jaguarappearsontheCoatof Arms!” Well, yes, so does a pickaxe and some feathers. Dowethenbanthesealsoas partysymbols?

Let’s put this in perspective Imagine declaring the Mona Lisa a national symbol of France and then banning any political party from using a mysterioussmileasitslogo. Ordeclaringpastaanational treasure and prohibiting Italian parties from campaigningwithspaghettithemed ads. It’s not just absurd it’s deliciously absurd.

The Representation of the People Act, which governs how elections are r u n , m a k e s n o mention none, zero, zilch—of national symbols being forbidden as party emblems.Section16,where party symbols come up, merely says that the Elections Commission (GECOM) must approve any symbol used on the ballotpaper Andthat’sit. No red lights. No roaring sirens when someone chooses a coconut, cutlass, orcat(wild orotherwise).

This is the point where our jaguar drama loses its teeth. There is no lawful prohibition—none—against using a national symbol (even if, hypothetically, the jaguar was one) as a party symbol What matters is GECOM’sdiscretion. It’sup to them to say, “Yes, you mayhavethisicongracethe ballot” or “No, try again how about a cassava?”

You see, parties can campaign with one symbol andappearontheballotwith another The only binding concern is what symbol GECOM approves for the purposeoftheballot.Soyes, apartycantattooajaguaron their foreheads but whether thatjaguarmakesitontothe ballotisGECOM’scall.

And this is where the moral panic turns mildly comedic Some seem to

Corruption making a comeback - for the better

Chronic corruption in government dealings has made a comeback, and it's for the better Yes, that was readright:corruptionisback and it is better For the first time, Guyanese are paying attention to corruption, becauseithitsthemwhereit hurts. Inthemouth. Thenin the belly and the rest of the body Last, in the psyche. Frankly, I like this kind of corruption for several brutal reasons. Whatitdoestothe political fraudsters in the PPP Government The lengths that it drives the people. And when it could make a material difference, given the individual and family indignities that it has

wreaked. The brainier ones in the PPP corruption machinery gambled that the old traditions of tribal loyalty w i l l t r u m p a l l considerations They hustled and stole on the belief that the responses of Guyanese-with an emphasis ontheirownfolks-wouldbe unchanged. Guvments duz always teef, dah is aaal dem kno fuh duh. For sure, there is corruption out there in the realms of government, but so is Mars somewhere out there in the universe To say in a different way, when corruption didn't present much of a bother to the ordinary Guyanese man and

the PPP is that its corruption is so universal that it is also local. The working-class man, the distressed woman, who struggle to feed their children, care for their aged parents, watchtheparty'sfat cats in their communities and how well those families and friends are doing. The ordinary people get a clear understanding of how their oil money is being siphoned off, into whose pockets it is going. It is not into their pockets. Nor is it in the direction of old and new PNC gamesters. Recalling statistics, he noted that from 2009 to 2018, CARICOM's intelligencereportsshowthe seizure of over 22,000 illicit firearms and more than 300,000 rounds of ammunition across the subregion.

Additionally, United States (US) government tracing records reveal that between2018and2022,the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and

In a letter quoted by the online media outlet, John expressed concern over the use of “indigenous symbols and imagery” by political parties.

“Theculturalsymbolsof Indigenous Peoples hold deepspiritualandtraditional significance. Their use in politicalcampaigns, without proper context or consent, risks misrepresentation and may inadvertently create division within our communities,” he was reportedassaying.

Johnreportedlysaidthat theuseofthenationalanimal isan“offensivedesecration” of one of the indigenous peoples'“sacredsymbols”.

The NTC Chair cited Articles 5 and 31 of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, noting that the use of the jaguar as a political symbol is a breach of Indigenousrights.

According to a News Source article, John and Shuman wrote to GECOM, objecting to the use of the jaguar as a political symbol.

“Indigenous peoples have therighttomaintain, control, protect and develop their cultural heritage, traditional knowledge and tradition cultural expressions,” in addition to their right “to maintain, control, protect

intellectual property over such cultural heritage, traditional knowledge, and

expressions.”

Meanwhile, Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo, during his weekly press conference on Thursday, said that a political party's symbol is approved by GECOM.

“Personally, I think it's a desecration but whether he gets the symbol or not, it's not a big concern of the People Progressive Party But I can understand the concerns of the NTC and many others who have complained that it's a national symbol,” Jagdeo said.

Supreme Leader, in first appearance since ceasefire, says Iran would strike back if attacked

DUBAI, June 26 (Reuters) - Iran would respond to any future U.S. attack by striking American military bases in the Middle East, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said on Thursday, in his first televised remarks since a ceasefire was reached between Iran and Israel.

Khamenei, 86, claimed victory after 12 days of war, culminating in an Iranian attack on the largest U.S. base in the region, located in Qatar, after Washington joined the Israeli strikes. “The Islamic Republic slapped America in the face. It attacked one of the important American bases in the region,” Khamenei said.

IRAN WILL NOT SURRENDER

In his pre-recorded remarks, aired on state television, Khamenei promised that Iran would not surrender despite U.S. President Donald Trump’s calls. “The U.S. President Trump unveiled the truth and made it clear that Americans won’t be satisfied with anything less than surren-

“The fact that the Islamic Republic has access to important American centres in the region and can take action against them whenever it deems necessary is not a small incident, it is a major incident, and this incident can be repeated in the future if an attack is made,” he added.

Trump said “sure” on Wednesday when asked if the United States would strike

Tehran has for decades denied accusations by Western leaders that it is seeking nuclear arms.

NO GAIN Khamenei said the U.S. “gained no achievement” after it attacked Iranian nuclear sites, but that it entered the war to “save” Israel after Tehran’s missiles broke through Israel’s multi-layered defence system. “The U.S. di-

rectly entered the war as it felt that if it did not get involved, the Zionist regime (Israel) would be fully destroyed. It entered the war to save it,” he said. saying that images of masked men on aid trucks showed that Hamas fighters were stealing what was meant for civilians. “The U.S. attacked our nuclear facilities, but couldn’t do any important deed... The U.S. president did abnormal showmanship and needed to do so,” he added. Trump said over the weekend that the U.S. deployment of 30,000-pound bombs had “obliterated” Iran’s nuclear programme. However, this appeared to be contradicted by an initial assessment from one of his administration’s intelligence agencies, according to three people familiar with the matter. Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also declared “a historic victory” on Tuesday, after the fragile ceasefire took effect, saying Israel had achieved its goal of removing Tehran’s nuclear and ballistic missile threat.

Shortly after Khamenei’s speech, Netanyahu posted a message with a picture of himself and Trump holding hands with the message: “We will continue to work together to defeat our common enemies.”

Macias reportedly escaped ahead of his transfer to a maximum-security prison, but authorities have yet to explain how he succeeded.

The Law Offices of Hughes, Fields and Stoby has been recruited to represent a young woman from Berbice who has accused a well-known Guyanese and West Indies cricketer of rape, a senior lawyer at the firm disclosed yesterday

“She will be represented by a number of attorneys from the law firm,” the senior representative of the lawfirmstated.

The alleged victim’s family, speakingexclusively with Kaieteur News, has expresseddeepconcernover what they describe as a sustained effort by law enforcement authorities to suppress and cover up the incident, which allegedly occurred on March 3, 2023,

at a residence in New Amsterdam,Berbice. Atthe time, the alleged victim was 18 years old. According to the victim’s mother, the accused was familiar to the family and had earned the trustofherdaughter

“She trusted him,” the motherstated.Onthedayof the incident, the cricketer reportedly picked the young w

The mother alleged that once inside the house, the cricketer forcibly removed theyoungwoman’sclothing andsexuallyassaultedher

The family has further alleged that from the onset, the investigation was mishandled, beginning with efforts by the cricketer’s relatives to settle the matter privately “Let it be known, wedidn’ttakeanymoney We don’t want money I want justice for what he did to my daughter,” the mother stated firmly The family asserts that there is substantial evidence contradictinganydenialofthe incident, including phone records of calls made by the accused to the victim and eyewitnesses who reportedly sawthemtogetherontheday of the incident The family claims this evidence was disregardedbyinvestigators

They further allege that the accused voluntarily surrendered to police, accompanied by his father, and was promptly released on station bail. Kaieteur News was informed by the victim’s family that a Woman Sergeant (name provided) was the lead investigator assigned to the case involving the prominent cricketer When contacted, Region 6 Commander Shiv-Persaud Bacchus confirmed that the Woman Sergeant is still stationed at the Region 6 Headquarters in New Amsterdam He stated that he would inquire into whether she was indeed leading the investigation However, despite promisingtoreturnacallwith furtherinformation, nofollowupwasreceiveduptothetime ofthisreport.Disturbingly, the

Despite the serious nature of the current allegation, the family says they were repeatedly kept in the dark about the progress of the investigation A detailed timelineprovidedbythefamily reveals troubling delays and questionable decisions by both the police and the DPP’soffice.

PresidentKeithJoseph, who welcomed the move as a long-overduerecognitionof thesport’sgrowingfootprint in theAmericas particularly intheCaribbean.

The inclusion of cricket in the 2027 Games, to be held in Lima, Peru, marks a significant milestone for a region where the sport is deeply ingrained in the culturalandathleticfabric.

“This was a very bold decision,” Joseph declared, noting that cricket had already been part of Lima’s original bid proposal. “It must have been somewhat disturbing and distracting for the Organising Committee of Lima2027 to agonise, waiting for this final confirmation—almost a year after being awarded hostingrights.”

Both Lima and the losing bid city, Asuncion, hadproposedcricketaspart of their sport slates

However, Panam Sports’ post-award deliberations about adjusting the Games programme raised concerns that cricket might be excluded despite its initial inclusion Wednesday’s confirmation, then, came as bothreliefandvalidationfor the cricketing community and its advocates in the Olympicmovement.

CANOC, which has been lobbying for cricket’s return to the Olympic Games—most notably for the 2028 Los Angeles

edition viewed the decision as a pivotal step forward “The Caribbean Association of National Olympic Committees feels decidedly emboldened followingthedecisionofthe Panam Sports Executive,” Josephstated.“Thisopensa critical new pathway for cricket in the hemisphere and provides a platform for our athletes to pursue excellence in the sport at multi-sportGames.”
