Glenn Lall urges Guyanese to demand Ring-Fencing of oil projects

…Accusespolitical partiesofbetrayingnation

Pu b l i s h e r o f

Kaieteur News, Dr Glenn Lall, issued a rallying cry to the Guyanesepeopletowakeup to what he described as the "betrayal" of the nation's interestsintheoilsector

Lall lambasted the People's Progressive Party (PPP), the People's National Congress (PNC), and the Alliance For Change (AFC) on Saturday, accusing all three major political parties

of capitulating to ExxonMobil and failing to implement ring-fencing provisions in the country's oilcontracts.

According to him, this single policy change—ringf e n c i n g e a c h o i l project could transform Guyana "overnight" into a nation truly benefiting from itsoilwealth.

“There is no debate,” Lall asserted on his TikTok page. “If they ring-fence the oilprojectstoday,Guyanese couldstartlivinglikeanoilrichnationtomorrow.”

He likened the current situation to a series of vivid analogies: buying feed for your chickens only to have the neighbor's fowl eat it; planting rice and having someone else harvest and sell it, handing you back a pintofrice;orbakingacake with your own ingredients onlytobetossedcrumbs.

Ineachcase,Lallsaid,it illustrated how Guyana's oil profits are being siphoned offbyExxonMobilwhilethe people are left with mere “crumbs” and “10-day parttimejobs.”

“Exxon is walking away with the whole cake,” he said “And our so-called

leadersarelettingthem.”

He also decried the absence of basic safeguards and transparency in the sector, noting that Guyana has not installed a single independent meter to monitordailyoilproduction, has failed to employ qualified oil experts to oversee operations, and has passed legislation that allows ExxonMobil to pay notaxes.

Lall also criticised a recent law that shields E

company from full liability in the event of an oil spill, callingit“disgraceful.”

He accused the government of hiding critical audit reports and refusing to place caps on E x x o n ' s i n t e r e s t charges financial decisions that he claimed

resultinbillionsbeingbilled tothecountrywithoutproper oversight.

“ O u r neighbours Trinidad, Brazil, Suriname—they all ring-fence their oil projects toavoidbeingrobbed,”Lall said, adding, “But not Guyana.”

With the prospect of a seventh oil project on the horizon,Lallwarnedthatthe country is again poised to forgo ring-fencing, potentially deepening the lossesforfuturegenerations.

“This is our last chance,” he said,“tobecomethelandlord in our own country—or a squatterinit.

The choice is in your fingerandyourmouth.”

Appealing to Guyanese ahead of the upcoming elections on September 1, Lall urged voters to

reconsider supporting the current political leadership, whom he accuses of selling outthecountry'sfuture.

“Are you really going to handthesesamepartiesyour fingeronSeptember1st?”he asked.

“Are you really going to

say yes to this sellout, to being used, lied to, and robbedagain?”

The message ended with aplea:“Ifthiswakesyouup, evenalittle—pleaseshareit. Becausethetruthmustreach every corner of this country beforeit'stoolate.”

President Ali assents to controversial Oil Spill Bill ignoring int’l and local concerns

Despite attracting criticism from various stakeholders, locally and internationally, President IrfaanAlihasassentedtothe controversial Oil Pollution Prevention, Preparedness, R e s p o n s e a n d ResponsibilityBill.

Thebillwastabledinthe NationalAssembly onApril 28 and approved through government's one-seat majority in the House on May16.

AccordingtotheOfficial Gazette, the Head of State signed the Bill into law on May28.

His approval to the controversial legislation comes on the heels of numerous concerns raised about the provisions in the Law In fact, a number of Guyanese and international bodies had publicly urged thePresidentnottoassentto the legislation, citing violations to Guyana's international legal obligations.

Twoofthemostpressing concerns raised so far about thelawrelatestoitsfailureto ensure Guyana secures an unlimitedguaranteefromthe parent companies of petroleum companies that operate locally and the fact that the law only provides oneyearforanaffectedparty to claim for compensation after the occurrence of a spill.

US-multibillion dollardamages

In a letter to President Ali, dated May 27, 2025, a group of 37 individuals and organizations from across theregionurgedtheHeadof StatenottoassenttotheBill, in light of the controversy andits“legaldefects”.

Guyanese citizens and organizations affiliated with Transparency Institute Guyana Inc (TIGI), Red Thread, Caribbean Labour

Solidarity, African Remembrance Day Committee, Guyanese Organization of Indigenous Peoples (GOIP), The GreenheartMovement,Ram & McRae and The Breadfruit Collective also attached their signatures to theletter, amongothers.

In the document seen by this newspaper, they explained, “We the undersigned are citizens of Guyana residing in Guyana or members of the Guyana diaspora or people of the Caribbean. We are deeply concerned that ExxonMobil Guyana Ltd 's deepwater

petroleum operations offshore Guyana are a danger to Guyana and the Caribbean.”

The citizens pointed out that Environmental Impact

Assessments (EIAs) conducted by ExxonMobil show that an oil spill in Guyana could hit Jamaica, withoveradozenCaribbean countries being negatively affected.

“ThiscouldresultinUS$ billions in harm to the economies, businesses, l i v e l i h o o d s a n d environmentsofGuyanaand the Caribbean,” they noted

astheyshiftedtheirattention to the Oil Pollution Bill, whichwasnotassentedtoat thetimetheletterwassent.

The citizens informed thePresidentthattheBillhas been condemned by experts as unconstitutional and an attempt by the Guyana government to change the law in order to protect ExxonMobil Guyana Ltd.'s p a r e n t c o m p a n y , ExxonMobil Corporation, from having to pay for oil spill damage to Guyana and theCaribbean.

To this end, they argued t h a t E x x o n M o b i l Corporation (the parent company) should not be permitted to produce oil

Guyana Lim

ed (the subsidiary) unless it can show that its operations are safe and the company will pay for all the damage done toenvironments, businesses, economies, communities, andlivelihoods.

Presidentignores

The President has not only ignored the calls made by local stakeholders but also regional bodies such as theCommonwealthLawyers Association (CLA), which previously urged him not to assenttotheBill.

The body, in a statement on Thursday, explained, “The Oil Pollution Bill has

unconstitutional, contrary to Guyana's international legal commitmentsandanattempt to reverse the impact of judicial rulings. These are seriouscriticismswhich, asa matter of good governance based on the rule of law, oughttobeaddressedbefore any exercise of the President'sassent.”

Withelectionsscheduled to be held on September 1, the President is expected to issue a Proclamation dissolving Parliament. The Commonwealth Lawyers Association, therefore, pointedoutthatthispresents an opportunity to ensure g

withholding assent to the Billandleavingtheseissues for the new Parliament to address “through a proper democratic process consistent with international standards, including public participation.”

With the Bill passed in lessthanthreeweekssinceit was first read in Parliament, the Association flagged the lackofproperconsultation,a breach of the Escazu AgreementtowhichGuyana is a party An objective of this Agreement is to

environmental decisionmakingprocess.

Moreover , CLA noted thatArticle197oftheUnited Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS)

cooperateonaregionalbasis with other states and competent international organisations to formulate

recommended practices and procedures to protect and p

environment, taking into account characteristic regional features. This is reflected in the Revised Treaty of Chaguaramas which req

s the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and its memberstatestocollaborate in “safeguarding their marine environment from pollutants and hazardous wastes.”

As such, theAssociation calledonGuyanatodevelop itsoilspillresponselawand systems in cooperation with CARICOM and the CaribbeanStates.

In addition to the CLA, internationalaward-winning environmental lawyer, Melinda Janki, as well as attorney-at-law, Christopher Ram, highlighted a number of flaws in the legislation. F o r m e r H e a d o f Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Dr Vincent Adams, also described the legislation as an attempt to undotheHighCourt'sruling for unlimited oil spill protection.

DearEditor, Democracyistheoxygen of society Without democracy, society degenerates to a state of anomie, and in the words of the English philosopher Thomas Hobbes, the life of citizens is reduced to a state where life can be 'nasty, brutishandshort'.

It is in the above context that the announcement by President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali to hold national and regional elections on September 1, 2025 within the constitutional timeframe hastobeseen.

T h i s i s i n d e e d commendable and accords with the democratic wishes oftheGuyanesepeople.

The same old wine, some in new bottles

DearEditor,

The political opposition in Guyana continues with their obstructionist behaviourtowardsPresident Ali's announcement of September1,2025adatefor holdingelectionsinGuyana.

At a press conference held earlier this week the opposition-sponsored members of the commission declared that the President's announcementofadatewas “premature” implying that the President should have waiteduntilsuchtimehewas toldthatthecommissionhad completed discussing all the concerns the political opposition had raised at statutory meetings of the commission.

What this meant was the opposition wanted to veto the constitutional prerogative of the President to name a date on which electionmustbeheld.

There was even talk in opposition quarters that the Chair should withdraw her state of readiness communicationforelections inthreemonths.

Here are some of the demands the opposition wanted settled by the commission before a date could be announced by the President

1.Thataninternalreview of the 2020 elections be carried out by GECOM, not bytheCourts;

2 That biometrics for registration and voter identification be introduced forthe2025elections;

3.That names of persons whomayhavediedoverseas be removed from the voters list;

4.That the extant voters list be scrapped as was done in 1990 because it is 'bloated;'

5.That a fresh house-tohouse registration exercise be conducted with a view to compilinganewvoterslist;

6.That a house- to-house exercise be conducted to verifywhetherthosepersons whose names appear on the voters list actually reside at the address that appears on thesaidlist;

7.That 'to be domiciled' belegallydefinedandsettled before a commonwealth citizen can be registered to vote;

8 That the Guyana Elections Commission works in concubinage with the Chief Immigration Officer to provide the Commission with real-time information about the movementofpersonswhose names appear on the voters' listinandoutofGuyana;

9 That prisoners, particularly those on remand, be registered and allowedtovote;

10That the laws and regulations applicable to LocalGovernmentElections

are applicable mutatis mutandis to General and RegionalElections

11.That all the above opposition concerns should have been settled before the Chair of Elections Commission can advise the President that it is ready to hold an election in three months.

My point is that for over three to four years now, the commission has been discussing these matters withnoagreementreached; No.1wasrejectedbythe commission on the ground that only a court of law can do such a review by way of anElectionPetition;

No. 2 was discussed but c o n s i d e r e d n o t implementable for elections 2025;

No. 3 was discussed but the opposition has made no workable or practical methodologyofhowthiscan bedone;

No. 4 was discussed but rejected since it was the current list that was used in the 2020 elections won by theAPNU+AFC;

No.5wasrejectedonthe ground that the current list, when updated through a process of claims and objections, aninternalcrossmatching exercise and with the adding of names of persons who would have attainedtheageof18; No. 6 was rejected since

it was thrown out by the Court

No. 7 was discussed but forwarded to the Attorney General's Chamber for advice; The AG responded advising the commission to continue with the practice it hasexecutedinthepastwith respect to registration of Commonwealthcitizensand that there is no need to deviatetherefrom;

No. 8 was discussed and rejectedonthegroundthatit is unacceptable and unnecessary to have the police involved as an appendage to the Elections Commission;

No. 9 this matter was discussedbutwasforwarded to the AG's chambers for advice.Thecommissionisto continue discussion on the matter following the receipt of advice from the AG's Chambers.

No.10wasdiscussedand rejected on the ground that advice received was flawed since Local Government Elections and General and Regional Elections are two separate and distinct elections; the former is to e l e c t m e m b e r s t o Neighbourhood Democratic Councilswhilethelatteristo electmembersofparliament andapresident.

No.11wasdiscussedand rejected on the grounds that it is ultra vires the constitutional authority of

the President and to dictate when the President can act. At the same time, it is anotherattempttobogdown the Commission in interminable discussion on matters advanced by the politicaloppositionthatmay go way beyond 2025 Further, it was clearly an attempt to muzzle the chairman and CEO of the Commission, tying their hands from executing their legitimatefunctions.

Nowthatadatehasbeen named for the holding of elections 2025 and a Work Plan has been approved by the commission, it is o b v i o u s t h a t t h e commission will be prioritizing the activities included in its schedule such as a seven-day Claims and Objections period as well as dates for nominations of candidates and identifying symbols among other critical activities necessary for the holding of elections on September1st2025.

In the meantime, while the commission is proceeding full speed ahead with the aim of efficiently a n d e f f e c t i v e l y implementing its work plan, deliberationswillcontinueat the commission with a view to concluding consideration onthetwomattersat7and9 and a few matters reminiscent of the

complaints raised by the political opposition at the recount at theArthur Chung ConventionCentre.

It should be noted however that while the political opposition has e x p r e s s e d e i t h e r dissatisfaction and or disagreement

w i t h a l l t h e aforementioned matters, Guyaneseshouldnotreston their laurels nor adopt a throwback attitude during these critical days when muchworkisrequiredonthe ground.Thereisnoroomfor complacencyatthistime.

Also, Guyanese should beonthealertforanyfurther attempt by the political opposition to disrupt the electoral process given their unpreparedness and their track record that speaks volumes.

They have consistently publicly stated that GECOM is not capable of holding a free and fair election, that it's ' m a n a g e m e n t i s i n c o m p e t e n t a n d unqualified' and that its chairmanis'biased'.

It is consistent with our fundamental right to vote and to have that vote respectedinalegal, credible, and transparent process. Thatmeansfromregistration to voting, to declaration of results, to the allocation of seats, to the formation of a government that reflects the true will of the people

Anything less is not d e m o c r a c y ; i t i s manipulation.

The working class of this country fought hard for the right to 'one-man-one-vote.'

That struggle wasn't waged for this right to be hijacked byaprivilegedfew And we shouldn't stand aside while that right is trampled.Thepeoplealways pay the price when the system fails. The political class will hide behind security, but the ordinary

man and woman The vendors, the drivers, the nurses, bauxite workers, teachers, andsoforth, arethe oneswhosuffer

This must not happen again.Wemustspeaknowto prevent the chaos they are inviting.

Andwemustsaythistoo: thediplomaticcommunityis notblameless.

Too many are silent, complicit, or worse, enabling this charade. They once did the same under apartheid.

They turned a blind eye to Gaza And now they pretend not to see what's goingoninGuyana. But we see. And we remember.

Wedemand: 1. A clean, credible voters'list

2 Biometric voter verification

3 Total reform of GECOM

Everyparty—PPP,PNC, AFC—has called for these before. Don't come now and pretendotherwise. It can't be right in opposition and wrong in government.

These political parties must stand on principle or step aside In 1990, respondingtodemandsfrom political parties and civil

society, President Desmond Hoyte rescinded the prorogationofParliamentto address urgent calls for electoral reform The GovernmentandOpposition returned to the National Assembly and passed laws thatledtothecreationofthe current GECOM, the introduction of counting of theballotattheplaceofpoll, andotherkeyreforms.

For over a decade, the peopleofGuyana, including political parties, have consistently called for further electoral reform, particularly to address the bloated voters list and to introduce biometric technology to prevent voter fraud. Yet these legitimate demands continue to fall on deaf ears These just demands are being ignored by those who benefit from a corruptsystem, regardlessof the damage it causes to the country and its people. The erosion of our democratic foundation must come to an end I urge my fellow Guyanese to support every lawful action necessary to protect our democratic rights. We cannot remain silentwhileourdemocracyis being dismantled before our eyes. And the time to act is now, nottomorrow Now!

The Gas-to-Energy fiasco

By now, all of Guyana must know that the Gas-toEnergy (GTE) project is a cononcitizens.

With a feasibility study engraved on the vice president's brain, and billions still being pumped intotheproject, thiscountry isstillnoclosertoaccessing cheaper, cleaner or more

Instead, we continue to throw money down a rabbit hole with the hopes of one day completing the project. Withdelaysafterdelaysand notasingleagreementmade public to date for this multibillion-US-dollar initiative, the government should be ashamed to continue defending this project.

With US$1B already spent to complete the pipeline, millions more being spent on arbitration, and two gas plants still strugglingtomakeprogress, responsible actors should be held to account for wasting Guyanese tax dollars on a project that was never feasible in the first place! The truth is, no government would hide documents or

From Kool-Aid to oil

Nine years after this countrydiscoveredoil, most Guyanese are trapped in their unchanging cycles of poverty, their grandparents' grim view of life's unyieldingcruelties.

There should have been economicindependencethat flows from being part and parcel of sharing in massive oilwealth.

What Guyanese are forced to live with is the dependence cultivated by leaders cheating their promise.

Thesamecallousleaders then hand the citizens a dollar to keep them under control and hanging on a string.

Be patient is the mantra, for there is more like that coming for those who bottle u p t h e i r a n g r y disappointment, and subscribe to the con games of tricksters masquerading asleaders.

Corruption: PPP's Kryptonite

A government that governs by fear eventually breeds resentment. A party that relies on intimidation may win elections, but it loseslegitimacy

And in the long run, legitimacy is the currency that matters VP Bharrat Jagdeoknowsthis.Heistoo shrewd a politician not to. Yet he persists, betting that the opposition is too weak, the electorate too forgetful, the resources from oil, too muchtoholdbackprogress. Itisadangerousgamble.

The PPP's greatest e n e m y i s n o t t h e APNU+AFC. It is not Azruddin Mohamed or any other third-party challenger. It is the memory of its own deficiencies. Corruption is not just a scandal—it is a slow-actingpoison.

Whatishappeningtoday in Gaza does not fit the definition of war, as recognized by civilized people. Even in the worst wars, thereisapausesothat the wounded can be withdrawn to safety, hopefully nursed back to some semblance of life. Is it stilltheIsrael/Gaza?

The biggest win of all!

Let's start with the bad news.Ifyou'reasupporterof the Opposition in Guyana, any Opposition PNCR, AFC, AZMO, or that uncle who insists he's forming a party as soon as he gets the paperwork—youmightwant to grab a glass of something strong and come to terms withthis:you'renotgoingto winthePresidencyin2025.

Yes,Iknow Thatsounds brutal. But it's better to face the truth now than be blindsided later when your hopes crash harder than the national internet service duringalivecricketmatch.

Now, I'm not saying this outofspite.I'msayingthisas someone who believes in preventive therapy why suffer in September when youcanprocessyourgriefin Juneandenjoytherestofthe yearwithlowerexpectations and fewer blood pressure pills?

Let me be clear: this is not a condemnation of the Opposition.No.Ifanything, it's a public service announcement. A sort of existential conditioning. A twelve-step program for political sobriety Because once you accept that the PPPCisgoingtowin—once you say, “Yes, Irfaan, I see you,Ihearyou, andIalready know the results”—you are free. Free to pursue goals thatarewithinreach.Freeto avoidpublicheartbreak.

The PPPC is not merely

inevitability This is a party that turns into a militarygrade electoral machine every five years. They can morph from sluggish bureaucracy to hyperorganised campaign juggernaut in under 48 hours.

Andyes, they'regoingto s p e n d N o t j u s t spend—detonate cash like confetti at a billionaire's wedding. If oil money had legs, it would be dancing at Freedom House. Let's talk about strategy Notthefantasyoneinwhich the Opposition wins the Presidency. I mean the realisticone—the“let'sdeny the PPPC a parliamentary majority” kind. Because here's the secret sauce: the PPPC, for all their infrastructure, oil boom

So, the Opposition should focus on ending the PPPC's one-seat dominance in the Parliament. That's the real battlefield Get the arithmetic right. Target the undecided voters. Convert disenchanted voters and keep away from hosting rallies.

The PPPC loves rallies. They adore them They create illusions at rallies. A crowd of 10,000 magically becomes 50,000 with the right camera angle But rallies, like social media likes, don'talwaysconvertto votes.Soletthemchant.Let them recycle crowds. It's aerobic and good for circulation. Meanwhile, the Opposition should be working door to door, peeling off the 20 voters per district who might just be tired of potholes, promises, orpressconferences.

Pres. Ali's record (his face, too),Iamconscience-bound, duty-compelled, to identify what has been loveless, disunifying, of the weakest character, and the grossest indignities. I don't know about Irfaan Ali, the man, leader, speaker, promiser, late-developing-unifier, and whether his introspections dumptonsofshameonhim, but I am ashamed to name them.

Exhibit 1: The National Assembly has been about what desecrates every citizen, nonemorethanthose who support the PNC and AFC No Motion of substanceallowed, thevoice of almost half the electorate stifled into faint, strangled whimpers. But Pres. Ali shrugs, speaksabout“unity.” Guyanese have a choice: profanity or hypocrisy. Either way, the president's half-decade history condemns him. Yet Pres.Ali flares sharply with “unity.” The degrading and denuding of IDPADA-G financially and viciously doesn'tfosterunity, sir Such

‘No evidence of foul play’ in Adriana Younge’s death -Canadian Investigator

…says if pool was thoroughly searched by trained persons case won't have gotten international attention, political pressure

Le o n a r d

McCoshen, the C a n a d i a n investigator hired by the government of Guyana to probe the Adriana Younge case, haspraisedtheGuyana Police Force (GPF) for conducting a good inquest into the girl's death and determinedthattherewasno foulplay

ElementsofMcCoshen's report were made public by the Police Force late Friday night.

Younge's body was discoveredonApril24inthe swimming pool of the Double Day International Hotel and Bar in Tuschen, E a s t B a n k Essequibo approximately 20 hours after she was reported missing during a familyouting.

According to her relatives, multiple searches were conducted around the hotelpremises, includingthe pool area, during the time shewasmissing, butnothing was initially found Her father later discovered her body in the pool and retrievedher

Family members observedvisiblebruisesand scratches on her knees, elbows, face, hands, and toes Strikingly, she was foundinanupright, standing position in the pool and reportedly showed no signs of bloating, an indication typically associated with drowning.

A p o s t - m o r t e m examination (PME) was conducted on April 28 by a three-member international pathology team: Dr Shubhakar Karra Paul of Barbados, Dr Gary Collins, Chief Medical Examiner of Delaware (U.S.), and Dr Glenn Rudner of Mount Sinai Hospital (U.S.). The team concluded that the cause of death was drowning However, they didnotdeterminethetimeof death, nor whether Adriana had inhaled pool or tap water

Unconvinced by the official findings, the family decided to seek a second autopsy in the United States (U.S) despite government's disapproval and police

mishandlingofthecase.

The 11-year-old's body was flown to the United States on Monday for a second autopsy and further forensic examination in Atlanta,Georgia.

ChiefMedicalExaminer ofGwinnettCounty,Atlanta, Georgia, Dr Carol Terry, who performed the second autopsy, said that only a thorough investigation will determine whether the 11year-old girl was murdered ordiedfromdrowning.

The pathologist stated that the circumstances surrounding Adriana's case are “highly suspicious” and cannot be conclusively attributedtodrowningatthis time. Dr Terry shared her preliminaryfindingsinalive interview with journalist Travis Chase In the interview, Dr Terry stated that an autopsy cannot definitively determine drowning. “At this point in time, I would not come to that conclusion. I think that there's a lot of information thatneedstobegained, alot

can see that would be supportive of drowning, but theyarenotuniform.People talkaboutfluidinthelungs. You may or may not have that. People will talk about fluid in the sphenoid sinus, which is a sinus that's at the baseoftheskull.Again, you may or may not have that withdrowning.”

Shortly after the child's bodyarrivedintheU.S.,the Guyana Police Force released the findings of the initialautopsytothepublic.

M e a n w h i l e , notwithstanding the good review provided by the retired Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) officer, inhisreporthemade it clear that if a thorough search of the pool had been done by “properly equipped andtrainedpersonsfromthe onset, this investigation would have very likely not garnered the international attention and political pressurethatitfindsitselfin today."

The police said that McCoshen, in his report,

ofinvestigationthatneedsto be done. Drowning is a diagnosis of exclusion. And by that, it means that you have to exclude other potential causes of death. Andoftentimeswhenabody is found in water, the assumptionisthattheperson hasdrowned,”shesaid.

She further explained that drowning cannot be immediately determined upon opening the body for examination, “There is nothinginanautopsythatis diagnostic of drowning There are certain things we

great deal of care in documenting the movement of the body of Adriana Younge, after she was taken to the Leonora Cottage Hospital, is exceptional and something that I have not seen before," the former sleuthsaid.

The investigator stated that upon conclusion of his work, he can say that the statements were taken in a reasonably detailed manner He said that it was also apparent that further clarifying statements were obtained or other persons interviewed to ensure accuracy and validity of the investigative file, as new investigative information wasgathered.

said he was given over 400 pages of documents and a quantity of digital forensic evidence in varying formats toreview

After reviewing the material, the retired Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) officer said, "It is very apparent to me that members who investigated thisincidenttooktheutmost time and considerable effort to speak to any and all persons that had any information to provide, relativetotheincident."

"Thefactssurroundinga

"Overall, itismyopinion that the members of the Guyana Police Force who conductedthisinvestigation, aftertheinitialresponse, did anexemplaryjobandshould be commended for their effort and diligence under very trying circumstances. They spoke to all of the witnesses who would cooperate with them and gathered all of the relevant information that was possible. They also made extensive efforts to speak with those witnesses who were not forthcoming," he stated.

Belowisthesummaryof findingsinhisreport:

"After spending a

considerableamountoftime reviewingalloftheevidence and information that has beenprovidedtome, itismy belief that there is no evidence of foul play in this matter by persons named or u n n a m e d i n t h e investigational information thatIwasprovided.

Thisbeliefisbased:

a. on the video evidence from Lot 7 Tuschen Public Road that no person(s), includingAdrianna Younge, were seen leaving, under other than normal circumstances from the area of the Double Day Hotel from the time she arrived until the time that she was noticedtobemissing;

b. none of the persons present at the Double Day Hotelsaworrecordedinany format, any evidence that Adrianna Younge either left or was taken from the pool

area;

c. there was no evidence offoulplay, byanypersons, named or unnamed found during any of the medical procedures that were done on the body of Adrianna Younge.

This included but was not limited to the physical examination of her body by severaldoctors, anextensive battery of X-Rays and a CT scan. Of note, in all of my service in the RCMP and since,Ihadnoteverseenthis level of medical or pathological effort done on any deceased persons Having three (3) very qualified and experienced pathologists conduct an examination is something I have never seen or heard of before.

d.Therewasnoevidence offoulplay, byanypersons, named or unnamed at any timeduringthecourseofthis investigation.

There is concrete video evidenceandnoevidenceby any people who were interviewed that Bhojnarine BholawasattheDoubleDay Hotel during the time that Adrianna Younge was known to be there and be aliveonApril23,2025."

It is apt to note that Mr McCoshenhasover30years of experience as an investigator of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. He had spent 20 of those yearsattachedtotheSerious CrimesBranch(SCB)inthe Major Crimes Unit (MCU), with the mandate to investigateserious, complex and sensitive matters, mainly homicides and deaths where foul play was suspected.

UN Security Council Fails Ukraine, Gaza and the World

When Russian drones

stalk civilians along Ukraine’s Dnipro River and Gaza’s hospitals lie in ruins

u n d e r r e l e n t l e s s bombardment, the world cannotpretendthattheseare distant crises. Yet the UN Security Council, which is entrusted to uphold global peace, is paralyzed by the self-interest of its veto powers, exposing its failure tofulfilbothitsmandateand its duty to safeguard

humanity For small Caribbeannationsstruggling to build themselves in a world whose financial and tradingarchitectureexcludes t h e i r m e a n i n g f u l participation, such failures impose immediate costs

Among these costs are: rising energy costs, food insecurity, and the alarming precedent that might, makes right. It is time for every voice, largeandsmall, torise in defence of law, humanity, and the UN Charter’s promiseofglobalsecurity CampaignofFear

SinceJuly2024,Russian forces have executed a coordinated drone assault across Kherson Province in Ukraine, killing nearly 150 civilians and injuring countless more. The UN’s Independent Commission of Inquiry on Ukraine found that these strikes targeted peoplegoingaboutdailylife — fetching water, riding mopeds, and even boarding ambulances — using live video feeds to pick off victims with surgical precision One witness described rescuers, who were tending to the wounded, beingblownapart by a second strike The Commission concluded that these were deliberate war crimes and crimes against humanity, designed to drive entire communities from theirhomes.

Yetwhensomemembers of the UN Security Council moved to condemn these atrocities, Russia vetoed the resolution, transforming the veto from a safeguard of human life into a license for impunity Meanwhile, estimates put the number of Ukrainian and Russian deaths–militaryandcivilian –atmuchmorethan300,000 since the conflict started in 2022.

Gaza’sDescentinto CollectivePunishment

Since the horrific attack on Israel by Hamas on 7 October 2023, Gaza has endured an unrelenting counteroffensive that has

r e d u c e d w h o l e neighbourhoodstorubbleby the Israeli military. In the most recent atrocity, the UN reports that nearly 4,000 Palestinians mostly civilians—havediedundera blockade that cuts off food, water, and medicine. This addstothemorethan54,000 that had reportedly been killed before this latest cruelty The UN Special Coordinator stressed that families are being “denied the very basics” and warned of looming famine

Hospitals and schools, even

those sheltering the displaced, have not been spared. Calls for a ceasefire a n d u n i m p e d e d humanitarian access have repeatedly faltered on threatened or actual vetoeseach one a vote for further suffering.

The Israeli government said its action is to stop Hamas from “stealing aid”, which Hamas denies. Either way, civilians continue to sufferandperish.

WhentheVetoShields Aggressors

The UN Charter gave its five permanent Council

members “primary responsibility” for keeping the peace, not for shielding t h o s e w h o f l o u t humanitarianlaw Eachselfinterestvetoofthiskindisa blow to the rule of law, eroding the norm that civilian lives must be protectedfromdirectattack.

SmallStates,BigStakes Caribbean nations live daily with the consequences of the Security Council’s failure to act. Rising energy costs sparked by conflict erodetheirbudgets, threaten theirfoodsecurity, andstoke social unrest. Worse still, if veto-wielders can ignore

mass atrocity, what protections remain for a smallstatethatcannotcount on the UN to safeguard its welfare? National sovereignty, territorial integrity, and individual human rights, which were hard-won through centuries of struggle, demand that small, developing states speakout, orriskstandingby while these rights are trampled.

Commendingthe EuropeanUnion

In the current climate of diplomatic paralysis, the

European Union (EU) has recently shown rare courage in relation to the horrifying events in Gaza. EU High Representative,KajaKallas, declared that “Israeli strikes in Gaza go beyond what is necessary to fight Hamas” and rejected any aid distribution model that bypasses the UN, warning that “humanitarian aid cannotbeweaponised”.

EU Commission

President, Ursula von der Leyen, described recent attacks on civilian infrastructureas“abhorrent” and “disproportionate,” and Germany’s new chancellor publicly questioned Israel’s objectives. By suspending trade talks with Israel and reviewing its association agreement, theEUissending a clear message: strategic partnershipsmustnoteclipse humanlife.

RaisingVoicesinUnity

Like the EU, Caribbean Community (CARICOM) states need not wait for the UN Security Council to perform its duty Their parliaments can pass motions demanding accountability; their foreign ministries can coordinate regional statements; their civil societies can keep Ukraine and Gaza in the public eye When CARICOM states speak with one voice - rooted in their shared history of fighting for selfdetermination–theyamplify the UN Charter’s promise t

d e m o c r a c y i s indispensable,” and remind the great powers of their pledgetoprotectit.

ACollectiveImperative

The UN Security Council veto was never meant to be a refuge for perpetrators If left unchallenged, aggression becomes the new normal, spreading like a cancer until every nation feels its ruin. NowisthemomentforLatin American and Caribbean states - and all who value stability-todemandthatthe Security Council honour its foundingcovenant.Forifthe rule of law dies in Ukraine and Gaza, it will be extinguishedeverywhere.

The nations of Latin AmericaandtheCaribbeaneachforgedinthefoundryof oppression and steeled by

Guyana’sdepletion policywascraftedto suitglobalsupplyand demand–Jagdeo - Says Govt. long-term policies aren’t determined by day-to-day changes

Vice President (VP) Bharrat Jagdeo on Thursday toldthemediathatGuyana’s depletion policy was crafted to suit the global supply and demand.

Jagdeo made the statementathisweeklypress conference held at Freedom House, Georgetown He made it clear that long-term policies are not determined byday-to-daychanges.

KaieteurNewsaskedthe Vice President whether it is

considering putting a depletion policy in place to existing frameworks to manage and strengthen the oil sector, thereby ensuring maximum benefits for citizens.

In the article, Jordan opinedthatitisnottoolateto implement a depletion policy “The more FPSOs [Floating Production and Storage and Offloading vessels] ExxonMobil brings on,itiswiththeseadditional costs,” Jordan told Stabroek News.

“And if you are now extractingmoreandmoreoil andatalessandlessprice,it will take longer to pay back Exxon’s [operational] costs. And in that, our dream of getting a better profit share willbelikewhatBobMarley said, ‘a fleeting illusion,’” Stabroek News quoted Jordanassaying.

Jordan said that he has listened to the government and especially Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo thatthepolicyistoextractas much oil as possible as the timeframe for fossils is dwindling and operational costsarelowestnow

However, Jagdeo a formerPresidentandfinance ministersaidthatthetypeof policy that Jordan spoke about would have to be alteredasoilpricesfluctuate.

“I don’t see anybody talking about that as the driving factor behind a depletion policy, because if youdon’tgetyourcrudeout oftheground, andtransferit or monetize it, or your gas out and monetize it, and invest or save your financial resources to be utilized for theprosperityofthecountry quickly you run the risk of being stranded…your crude beingstrandedintheground because, there’s several other countries that are competing with you and neverbeingabletomonetize itifthatfuturehappensfaster than we think,” the VP stated.

Jagdeo noted that the future is a decarbonized one while stating that the governmentismorefocused on getting the crude out of thegroundasfastaspossible and transforming it into financialresources.

Given his statement that Guyana has a depletion policy in place, Kaieteur News attempted to seek clarity from him about the policy Messages were sent to both Jagdeo and Minister of Natural Resources Vickram Bharrat seeking a copyofthepolicy However, uptopresstime, noresponse wasreceived.

Industry stakeholders have however disagreed with this approach, stating that Guyana’s sweet, light, crudewillbeneededbeyond 2050, and therefore, authorities would do well to implement a depletion policy to pace itself. Local activists have also argued that Guyana should have a policy in place to give itself breathing space to build the necessary skills and capacities to manage the sector; otherwise, the risks are even greater for economic loss as well as environmentaldamage.

Blue-sky expansion is a termoftenusedinthemining industry to describe the potential for significant, yet currently unproven, upside inaproject.

Gilt Creek is a highgrade, intrusion-hosted orogenic gold deposit located 500 metres north of Wenot. Its current mineral resource estimate (MRE) includes1.15millionounces of indicated gold at an average grade of and 665,000 ounces inferred Themajorityofthisresource lies between 300 and 600 metres depth, with earlier drilling revealing gold mineralization as deep as 967metres.

Notably, theresultsfrom its first Preliminary Economic Assessment (PEA)fortheWenotProject revealed that the project is slated to yield over 142,000 ouncesofgoldannuallyover a 13-year mine life. At its peak, production is anticipated to soar to 184,000 ounces in a single year, with a total estimated production of 1,840,000 ounces of payable gold Wenot, a 2.5-kilometre-long shear-hosted gold deposit, holds an estimated 834,000 ouncesofindicatedgoldand 1.61millionouncesinferred. ‘Noendinsightfor completionofGas-toEnergyproject’ …Opposition says early elections an attempt to cover up incompetence in managing Guyana’s largest investment in history

Repeated delays, coupled with ongoing legal disputes between the Government of Guyana and the Gas-to-Energy (GTE) contractors, areindicativeof a grossly mismanaged projectwithnoendinsight. This is the view of the economic advisor to the Leader of the Opposition, ElsonLow The consortium, Lindsayca/CH4, was c o n t r a c t e d b y t h e Government of Guyana (GoG) in December 2022 to build a Natural Gas Liquid (NGL) plant and a 300megawatt natural gas-fired plant at Wales, West Bank Demerara. The construction wasdelayedfollowingalate handover of the site to the contractor by ExxonMobil.

The energy giant was responsible for site preparation.

In an interview with

Weighing in on the delays,Lowexplained,“Itis clear that one of the reasons the government has called theelectionearlierthansome commentators expected is because the long-awaited Gas to Energy plant will not be completed in the near future.”

Furthermore, he argued that the fact that additional funds had to be recently appropriated for expenses related to it, only a few months after the national budget was passed, demonstrates “total incompetence” by the government.

Lowreminded,“Thathas been the pattern with this project from the beginning. Thisearlyelectiondateisan attempt to mask the government’s incompetence managing Guyana’s largest eversingleinvestment.”

Leaving an abusive

relationship can feel daunting and risky, but remaininginsuchasituation canbeevenmoreharmful.

It’s important to understand that anyone can find themselves in an abusive relationship. Often, we start off with attraction and interest only to later discover that our partner exhibits emotional, mental, spiritual, sexual, or physical abuse, orneglect.

Most people that discover that their relationship is abusive and still stay were either themselves in an abusive p a r e n t a n d c h i l d relationship; had been through secondary trauma, inabusiverelationshipswith parents, care givers or close familyandfriends, orintheir young adulthood being in a relationshipthatwasabusive which stripped them of selfesteem, confidence, values and their identity These p r e v i o u s a b u s i v e relationships, condition i n d i v i d u a l s t o b e psychologically broken whichconditionsthemtosee abusive relationships as normal ways of life, accepting it as normal societal behavior or even acts of love Simply advisingsomeonetoleavean abusive relationship can be unhelpful and may not address the underlying issues.Stayingintheabusive relationship is not the cause factor, it’s a symptom of something much bigger; possiblylackofself-esteem; lack of self-confidence and lackofself-valueordistorted self-values.

We don’t tell men and women to leave abusive relationship when they wouldhavespentyearseven decades in parent and child relationship which may be on going, as if they can just walk out from their abusive r o m a n t i c a b u s i v e relationship. We empower men and women in abusive relationship.

Empowering menandwomendonotonly equip them to leave abusive relationships but destroy their taste for any abusive relationship in the future. This is the right way that brings healing and avoidance of a life time of nightmares.

In fact, the most dangeroustimeinanabusive relationship is post-breakup. Most women and some men are more likely to be killed in the weeks after leavingtheirabusivepartner thanatanyothertimeduring therelationship.

Women, you do not just wake up one morning and run out of your abusive relationship.Ifyouleaveillprepared, you will return or run into another abusive relationship. Inaworldwherefastfashion often erases cultural nuances, Katia Fitzpatrick and MATAPEE Indigenous

Designs are creating a countercurrent — one that slows down, listens, andhonors.

From her dental training to her design table, Katia’s hands have always worked with care and purpose. Now, they craft not just smiles, but symbols of identity, unity, andstrength.

With every piece she creates, Katia proves that fashion can be more than beautiful — it can be powerful, rooted, and revolutionary

For this reason, in time for Guyana’s 59th Independence, Katia released a deeply personal project, a visual album of some of

her work which is an ode to her indigenous roots and her beloved homeland,Guyana.

The album was a collaborative effort between the brand Matapee and photographer, Abel Harris, hencethetitle‘MatapeeXAbelH.’

The album captures models, Shauntaé R I Washington and David Anthony Loncke wearing designs from Matapee in stunning scenes from one of Guyana’s most iconicareas;theStabroekMarket.

Katiatold The Waterfalls while traditionally, Indigenous wear has often been seen as ceremonial or restricted to specific occasions, in this collection, the models’ outfits featurethewarriorpattern, adesign carefully placed across the chest andlegs.

“It’s symbolic echoing

who wears it. There’s a poetic synergy between the location and the clothing: both resilient, both storied, bothalive.”

THEGUYANADRESS

Among Matapee’s standout creations is the Guyana Dress — a bold, elegant piece that encapsulates the spirit of an entire nation.

At the heart of the dress is the flag of Guyana, displayed proudly across the midsection, serving as both a visual and symbolic centerpiece. It’s more than just fabric;it’sadeclarationofidentity, pride, andstrength.

The designer noted that the street energy of Stabroek itself enhancesthismessage.

With this dress, Katia not only highlights the beauty of her homeland but also affirms the poweranddignityofitspeople.

For Katia, the Guyana Dress is notonlyafashionstatement—it’s aculturalartifact.Ittellsastoryof strength, sovereignty, and unity,

The designer noted that photographing the Guyana Dress against this vibrant backdrop brought an added layer of authenticity and emotion to the piece.

“It created a powerful visual narrative that connects fashion to place, and style to soul The juxtapositionoftraditionalpatterns against the colonial architecture and urban life of Georgetown evokes a profound sense of patriotism — a reminder of how deeply rooted identity is in place andpeople,”Katiaexplained.

MomentsthatmarkedGuyana’sIndependence 59 Years on…

It is not unusual for Independence Day in Guyana to be marked by activities like flag raising ceremonies, parades and other types of patriotic and celebratory activities to commemorate the occasion.

As such, on the heels of the nation’s 59th anniversary as a sovereign State, Kaieteur News took a look back at the historical moments that marked Guyana’s independence.

Thispublicationcaughtupwith a small remnant of persons, who were integrally involved in the details of first independence HamiltonGreenacareerpolitician whoisaformerPrimeMinisterand MayorofGeorgetown.Green,95is sole surviving official of the delegation that attended the constitutional conferences in London when the date for the Independence was selected in 1965.

Another key personality is former lieutenant of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF), Desmond Roberts who helped to hoist the first GoldenArrowhead at the flag raising ceremony which marked thenation’sfirstIndependenceDay on May 26, 1966 and finally, Mr Ronald Austin, a diplomat, who servedintheforeignserviceofhis countryformanyyears.Mr Austin was among the first sets of Guyanese to benefit from the educational perks of a newly sovereignstate.

Each of the men spoke vividly of the pre-independence era—the violence, racial segregation and riot that marred Guyana’s struggle independence but Green who served in various capacities as a politician gave a more detailed account of some of the events that tookplace.

According to him, the internal politicsinBritishGuianadrovethe racialtensions, strikes, andriots.

“Thestruggleforindependence was heightened when Hubert Critchlow formed the Labour Union and the public affairs committee was established with Janet Jagan, Dr Cheddi Jagan, AshtonChaseandfewotherfolks.”

He recalled that the “People Progressive Party (PPP) founded by two factions led by Forbes BurnhamandDr CheddiJaganwas thefirstmasspartyinthecountry It was initially a multi-ethnic party supported by workers and intellectualsinthe1950s

Howeverby1957,thePPPhad split into two factions, which competed against each other at the elections; the Jaganites and Burnhamites, the split helped to drive the social and political divisioninthecountry

“That situation highlighted the deep-seated political and social divisions within the country leading up the riots and the unrest between 1962 and 1965 were very bad…”

Green said. Despite this, the former Prime Minister noted that theinternalturmoilandstrugglefor independence paid off with a number of historical Guyanese

political figures like Burnham, Dr Jagan and Sidney King (Eusi Kwayana) and others played key rolesinthestruggle.

Moreover, the highlight of Green’sIndependencerecollection was being a part of the British Guiana Constitutional Conferences.

The conferences were a series of meetings held in London with the aim of establishing a new constitution for the colony, ultimately leading to its independence as Guyana. These conferencesplayedacrucialrolein shaping Guyana’s political and social landscape as it transitioned from colonial rule to selfgovernment. Thefinalconference was held at a time that Burnham hadwontheelectionsandformeda government.

He said “I’m the only person alive to attend that conference where the date for independence was fixed. All of the other persons are gone. Let me tell you the story about that, Burnham wanted February 23rd as an independent date to commemorate the struggle byCuffy.”

Greenrecalled“ButtheBritish

quite rightly said there is enough timetomakeallthepreparationfor the flags between the date of meeting and the independence, Peter D’Aguiar wantedAugust 1st which is the date the British gave the Africans to celebrate their emancipationbutBurnhamsaidhe didn’t want no date fixed by the Britishsotheyagreeditwouldbea date between February 23 and August1.”

He continued “At the conferencewhichIwaspresentthe British then said why not take the dateMay24thbutbeforethewords came out their mouths, Burnham was so sharp He said no gentlemen! That is the Queen’s official birthday So we ended up with May 26, 1966 as the date for ourindependence.”

NATIONALPRIDE

With the date set for Independence, the delegation who attendedtheconferencesinLondon returnedhomeandthepreparations for the first independence ceremonybegan.

Second Lieutenant Desmond Roberts a young GDF officer was integrally involved in those activities. Roberts who currently

lives in the United States recalled thatitwasafewmonthsshyofhis 21stbirthdaywhenhewasselected to hoist the flag. It was a moment of national pride and he had rehearseddiligentlyforit.

“What I recall about that night is that I was very nervous obviously,Ididn’twantanythingto gowrong,”ColonelRobertssaid. He said that the fact he rehearsed gave him some confidence.Inadditiontothis,Mr Roberts said another officer; Ulric Pilgrim was assigned to help him with hoisting the first Golden Arrowhead.

“It was fortunate that we rehearsed because the actual flag was three times and four times the size I had been rehearsing with. It was good that we had two people therebecauseitwasnotacceptable for the flag to be touching the ground;sothatwasveryhelpful.”

According to him, the big challengetherewastheseabreeze. The ceremony was held at the national park in Thomas Land in closeproximitytotheseawalls.

Roberts recalled: “That night wasaverywindynight;luckilythe flagwentupslowlyandwhenitgot tothetopitsnappedout.Thatloud sound, you know, I couldn’t forget the sound; the snap of the flag. It wasthefirsttimethatImyselfhad seentheflagandthefirsttimethat any Guyanese had seen the flag. It was a remarkable feeling and the sound of awe, pride and wonder thatpeoplegaveoff.”

He said one of the more remarkable things that night was when then Premier Burnham arrivedattheground, hecalledDr CheddiJaganwhowastheleaderof the opposition at the time and the twoofthemembraced.

He was officially charged with committing a terrorist act The accused Seon Carmichael of Lot 205 Land of Canna, East Bank Demerara (EBD), appeared

at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court before Acting Chief Magistrate FaithMcGusty

Carmichael was not required to plead to the two counts of the indictable charges which alleged that between May 15 and 17, 2025hefacilitatedaterrorist act, whichisthebombingof theGuyanaPowerandLight (GPL) Georgetown Substation on Mandela Avenue, and the bombing of the East Ruimveldt Police outpost.

The defense was led by Attorney-at-law Everton

The attorney argued that his client assisted the police with the investigation by providing them with video interviews and written

statements of what transpired on the day in question. Lammy noted that his client bought a few screws and other items for the suspects, however, because of the type of work themendohisclientdidnot suspect anything until after the incident Moreover, L a m m y r e q u e s t e d reasonable bail before the trialsincethereisnowaythe matter will conclude in reasonabletime.

Circumstances surroundingdeathof Adrianasuspicious …US pathologist urges thorough probe …will rely on tests from first autopsy to determine cause of death

Chief Medical Examiner ofGwinnettCounty,Atlanta, Georgia, Dr Carol Terry, says that only a thorough investigation will determine whether11-year-oldAdriana Younge was murdered or

regarding the circumstances of Adriana’s death, she deemed the case highly suspicious and urged that a thorough investigation be conductedtofullydetermine what happened “What I havebeentoldregardingthe circumstances are so suspicious that I really think that there needs to be a very thoroughinvestigation.”

Among those concerns was the discovery of Adriana’s body in a hotel pool that had already been searched.

parts of Adriana’s neck tissues were still soft, suggestingthatthisareamay not have been fully examined during the first autopsy

“Looking at the structuresoftheneck…they still had a good bit of soft tissue… I wanted to expose themmoresothatthere’sno question these structures werenotbroken,”shesaid.

diedfromdrowning.

The pathologist stated

that circumstances surrounding Adriana’s case are “highly suspicious” and cannot be conclusively attributedtodrowningatthis time Dr Terry, who performed a second autopsy on Adriana’s body on Thursday, shared her preliminaryfindingsinalive interview with journalist TravisChase.

In the live interview, Dr Terry stated that an autopsy

cannot definitively determine drowning “At thispointintime,Iwouldnot come to that conclusion. I think that there’s a lot of information that needs to be gained, alotofinvestigation that needs to be done Drowning is a diagnosis of exclusion And by that, it means that you have to exclude other potential

causes of death And oftentimes when a body is found in water, the assumptionisthattheperson hasdrowned,”shesaid. She further explained that drowning cannot be immediately determined upon opening the body for examination, “There is nothing in an autopsy that is diagnostic of drowning There are certain things we can see that would be supportive of drowning, but theyarenotuniform.People talk about fluid in the lungs. You may or may not have that. People will talk about fluid in the sphenoid sinus, which is a sinus that’s at the baseoftheskull.Again, you may or may not have that withdrowning.”

Further, Dr Terry revealed that based on the information she received

“That is disturbing becauseIdon’tthinkyoucan simply write it off as this childdrowned. You’vegotto be concerned. Did she die sometime earlier, and then was placed in the pool? Because there’s not going to be any good way, to discern whether or not that happened.”

However,Dr.Terrynoted that she has not yet received the results of the toxicology report or any additional testingconductedduringthe f i r s t a u t o p s y, a n d emphasised that these findings will be critical to forming a more accurate conclusion. Sofar, basedon the circumstances shared with her, she expressed reluctance to conclude that Adriana drowned, stating, “Yes, I would. Based on the circumstances that are reportedtome,Iwould.”

As such, Dr Terry emphasised the need to examine toxicology reports, potential drug findings, and signs of sexual assault, stating, “Things like this need to be considered and looked at, given the circumstances reported to me.”

Secondautopsy wascompromised

During her examination, Dr Terry revealed that Adriana’s body had lost significant forensic value and that the second autopsy wascompromised.

“The examination that I had the opportunity to do is compromised at this point because, again, this is a second autopsy,” Dr Terry explained. “We have issues ofartefactsintroducedbythe first autopsy, decomposition that has taken place, and embalming that has occurred.Allofthesefactors introduce artefacts to the body and compromise the examination to some extent.”

However, Dr Terry did noteapotentiallysignificant detail, she observed that

The doctor said too that there was no evidence of trauma on the body, but stated that doesn’t rule out murder

“Just because I don’t see any physical manifestation of trauma doesn’t mean that someone was not murdered. Therearewaysinwhichyou can kill someone and not leave any demonstrable trauma on the body Basically, you just have to interfere with their ability to breathe.

And in some cases, it may involve somehow constricting their chest or maybe putting pressure on their neck And you don’t always wind up breaking structures in the neck or bruising structures in the neck.Sosometimesyoucan have asphyxial type deaths or deaths where adequate blood flow and oxygen doesn’t get to the brain and not leave any trauma to the body.”

Dr Terrynotedhowever, thatsheisstillintheprocess of collecting specimens in case additional testing is required.

“Again, realizing the optimal specimens are from thefirstexamination, butI’m conducting this examination keepinginmindthatI’mnot goingtohaveachancetogo back. So anything I need to do, I need to do at this point in time. I think I may have over-collected, but again, I don’tgetasecondchanceto bethorough,”sheexplained.

S h e f u r t h e r acknowledged that the first autopsy, conducted by a team of three pathologists, appeared to have been performedverythoroughly

“By the time I do a second autopsy, artefacts have already been introduced from the first autopsy, andinthiscase, also from embalming,” Dr Terry said “But in doing this examination, I first wanted to ensure that the initial autopsy was done correctly and thoroughly and it appeared that it was. There aresomeminordifferences

Lookingahead

Lookingahead,Dr Terry statedthathernextstepisto complete her report and review the results from the firstautopsy

Dr Terryemphasisedthe importance of the initial autopsyfindings,“AsIsaid, my role here was essentially performing a quality control check through the second

autopsy. From what I

observed, the first examinationwastechnically done very competently and thoroughly.Iwouldnowlike toseewhatthoseresultsare.”

GuyanaPolice

Despite Dr Terry’s call for further inquiry, the Guyana Police Force recently released a report statingtherewasnoevidence of foul play According to police, the first autopsy conductedbyateamofthree international pathologists concluded that Adriana’s death was consistent with drowning, andtherewereno signs of trauma, assault, or criminalactivity

The police said too that the findings support an earlier report submitted by Mr Leonard McCoshan, a (retired) Royal Canadian MountedPoliceinvestigator, whichconcludedthatthereis “noevidenceoffoulplayby persons named or unnamed duringtheinvestigation.”

According to the police, a c o m p r e h e n s i v e postmortem examination, including toxicology and DNA testing, was carried out.Keyfindingsinclude: No acute injuries or trauma.

Negative sexual assault kitandDNAanalysis. Skinandairwaychanges aligned with prolonged submersion.

No evidence of restraint, struggle,orbodyrelocation.

P o l i c e s a y t h e pathologists concluded Adriana likely sank and

surfaced later due to natural decomposition processes in tropicalconditions.

Adriana Younge’s body was discovered onApril 24, 2025,inaswimmingpoolat t h e D o u b l e D a y International Hotel Her remains were later flown to the United States for a second independent autopsy after her family rejected the findings of the initial examination.

Presidentialcandidate AzruddinMohamed slappedwithtax evasioncharges

Businessman Azruddin Mohamed was placed on $500,000 bail on Thursday when he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court to answer to false declaration and tax evasion charges.

Mohamed, who on Monday evening declared his candidacy for the upcoming general and regional elections, appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Faith McGusty, where he pleaded not guilty tothecharges.

It is alleged that on or about December 7, 2020, at Lot 200-201 Camp Street, Georgetown, Mohamed falsely declared that he purchased one Lamborghini Roadster SVJ for USD$ 75,300 instead of its initial costUSD$695,000.

It is also alleged that on the same day at the said address, he fraudulently declared the amount for the said Lamborghini to USD$ 75,300, instead of USD$ 695,000, which resulted in taxes in the sum of G$383 millionbeingevaded.

The businessman was represented by attorneys Damien Da Silva, Siand Dhujon and Darren Wade Da Silva told the court that the charges all stem from an importation of a luxury vehicle by his client He added that the vehicle was dulyimported, dulyentered, duly cleared and duly registered, all done to the satisfaction of the Guyana RevenueAuthority(GRA)in December2020.

“ A n d s i n c e t h e importation of this vehicle, madam, Mr Mohamed has been freely enjoying the use and benefit of his property, free from any interference until March of this year, when he received a written correspondence from GRA notifying him that an investigation was launched

todeterminewhetherhehad fraudulently under declared the value of the said vehicle to avoid paying the correct taxes,”DaSilvasaid.

The attorney said that from that correspondence, his client was also informed that the investigation concluded that he underdeclared the value of the vehicle and that he is now liabletopayadditionaltaxes.

As a result, Mohamed’s attorneys immediately requested in writing that the Revenue Authority disclose thereasonforitsdecisionas wel

s all the facts, evidence, and material to supportitsfindings, inorder to be able to respond in any meaningful way to the allegations.

Da Silva said that in an affront to fair and good administration, the Revenue Authority responded to his client’srequestforbetterand sufficient particulars by further demanding the payment of the additional taxes without satisfying his request.

He added that the investigation and the subsequent decision by the GRA were done without affording Mohamed an opportunity to be heard beforeadecision/sismadeto impose an additional tax amount.

Thelawyeralsorevealed that there was a total disregard for the principles ofNaturalJusticeonthepart of the Revenue Authority, which ultimately led to his c l i e n t i n s t i t u t i n g proceedings in the High Court for a declaration that the decision/action taken by GRA was and is illegal. He also asked the court to injunct the Revenue Authority from seizing the v e

substantive matter, which was then followed by the criminalchargeshisclientis facing.

Da Silva, in closing, requested that Mohamed be releasedonself-bailsincehe is not a flight risk, and he reassured the court that his client will be present on his nextcourtdate.Theattorney noted that his client is a popular figure and even more now since he recurrently announced his presidential candidacy and hasstartedhiscampaign.

However, GRA’s attorney, Sanjeev Datadin, told the court that the Authority was conducting a reassessment of the

Lamborghini that was i m p o r t e d b y t h e businessman, and it was discovered that the cost reflectedalowervalue.

Datadin stated that as a result of the findings, GRA wrote and instructed the accusedtorespondwithin14 days.Theattorneyaddedthat Mohamed failed to provide GRA with the necessary documents but requested additionalinformation.

Moreover, he mentioned that there is a process that needs to be followed. “The Privy Council and the Caribbean Court of Justice ruled that criminal court is precedent in any dispute or matter, and that the criminal jurisdiction applies that whatever defence you wish toraise, youcan’tdivideinto otherjurisdictions.Itmustbe raisedinthiscourt,”Datadin said.

Magistrate McGusty granted Mohamed $250,000 bail for each charge The matterwasadjournedtoJune 26,2025.

Stating his party’s p o s i t i o n o n t h e implementation of such a policy, he told the Kaieteur News, “we have long said that it’s important, that any government should conduct feasibility studies for each project to understand its implications for our economy Thiswillnaturally mean that the depletion rate of our fields will have to be assessed.”

He explained that what the PNCR sees as more importantisnotthedepletion rate, but the safeguarding of the resources. Therefore, a more disciplined and thoughtfulapproachmustbe taken with the NRF, rather thanfrequentamendmentsto the act to withdraw larger amounts, citingthatthemost recent amendment allows almost 100% of funds to be withdrawn.

When we were youngparents of four bright and energetic children, my husband and I wrestled with onepressingquestion;where could we raise our children

to thrive, not just academically, but socially, emotionally, andspiritually? After careful thought, we madeadeliberatechoicenot toraisethemasminoritiesin a predominantly white community

Yes, those school districts often came with moreresources, butwewere also aware of the emotional and psychological toll such environments could exact. Research indicates that Black children in majoritywhite schools often face significant racial stressors that negatively impact both academic performance and mental well-being We decided we wanted our children to be a little older, and stronger, before having tonavigatethosechallenges. These are the kinds of tradeoffs many parents of colorface.

There is no perfect answer;everychoicecarries itsownrisksandrewards. In fact, astudypublishedinthe American Educational Research Journal found that

Black students in

predominantly white schools reported higher levels of alienation, racial discrimination, and lowered teacherexpectations—factors that contributed to lower a c h i e v e m e n t a n d engagement compared to peers in more racially diverse settings (Welton et al.,2018).

So we prioritized something we believed was more fundamental than just access to advanced resources, experienced teachers or fancy school buildings.

We prioritized our children's sense of belonging, confidence, and self-worth.

That decision meant we had to get creative and deeply involved in their learningjourney

Our answer came through charter schools in our community and, most

Advancing Education, Technology & Innovation in Guyana…

Why online education was a lifeline for my children—and can be for yours too

pivotally, through online education. All four of our children spent all but three years each enrolled in a combination of full-time, accreditedcharterbrick-andmortar and online schools. These institutions became the foundation for their academic and personal development.

The online school in particular offered an interrelated curriculum that allowedthemtomastercore subjects at their own pace, with tools that empowered us as parents to monitor progress, catch problems early, and intervene effectively

Itwasthroughthisonline school that each of my children mastered mathematics, early and deeply, paving the way for allofthemtotakeAdvanced Placement (AP) Calculus in highschool.Thatgavethem a competitive edge when applying to top U S universities. My son, who had struggled with reading early on, discovered a passion for history, the arts, and art history. That passion now defines his life, he is a thriving manager in the worldofart.

My other son had such a strong foundation in Math that he scored in the 95th percentile on SAT Math, opening up the door to several college scholarship opportunities.

In addition to attending outstanding universities in the US – Stanford, Cornell, N Y U a n d B o s t o n Universities, what was even more remarkable was that the online environment sparked in each of them a genuine love for learning, and a willingness to take control of their own education Today, they continue to research, teach themselves new skills, and stay abreast of emerging technologiesonline.

But what truly made the experience extraordinary was the flexibility Online learning allowed significant hoursof freetimeduringthe day Our children used that time not to scroll through social media or watch television, but to learn to

code, swim, participate in robotics classes, travel to Guyana to help launch STEMGuyana, and work on national projects like FIVEO, which took them to Silicon Valley to meet tech billionaires and to The Hague to present their ideas togloballeaders.

Theseopportunitieswere extracurricular experiences which built the soft skills; problem-solving, critical thinking, communication, and creativity, that define 21st-century success. And they weren't rushing from class to class in an overcrowded building; they hadtimetobreathe, tothink, andtogrow

Our lived experience became the inspiration behind Pathway Online Academy, Guyana's first online school program. But make no mistake, online learningisnotasilverbullet. Without the right design, many online programs fall short.

According to the National Education Policy Center, online charter schools in the U.S. have an average graduation rate of only 51%, compared to the national average of 84% for all public schools (NEPC, 2021) The challenge is clear, online learning must be engaging, personalized, and supported by a caring adult.

This is where today'sAI technology changes the game Adaptive learning platforms powered by artificial intelligence are now capable of analyzing a child's strengths, weaknesses, and learning pace to deliver customized lessons.

These tools help struggling students review foundational content while allowing advanced learners to move ahead, no one gets left behind or held back. A study by the Brookings Institution notes that AIdriven adaptive tools can “improvelearningoutcomes by tailoring instructional content to student needs” and are especially effective when paired with human support(Zhuetal.,2020). Still, human connection

is key A grandmother, an aunt, oraparentdoesn'thave to be exceptionally knowledgeable, just someonewhopaysattention and who cares. Someone who says, “Let's log in together,” or “Let's finish your math before lunch.” Success in online school often starts with that one adult who refuses to let a childfallthroughthecracks. Even if your child is not enrolledinanonlineschool, youshouldstillnurturetheir curiosity Encouragethemto explore new topics, to research their questions, to read widely and deeply, and to search for answers themselves.

“We must raise children who are not just consumers of content, but seekers of knowledge.”

And while much of this article has focused on children, I want to speak directly to adults, especially those who never finished school.

Maybe you dropped out years ago. Maybe you had a baby as a teenager Maybe you've quietly dreamed of going back but felt embarrassed or unsure Onlineeducationmaynotbe for everyone, but it offers youasecondchancetolearn at your own pace, on your owntime, inyourownspace. in a traditional school setting, or has limited or no accesstoaqualityeducation, then it may be time to consider an online option. Online learning, when thoughtfully designed and supported, can offer personalized instruction, greater flexibility, and renewed confidence for children who feel left behind.Inarapidlychanging world and an increasingly competitive Guyanese economy, every child, and every adult, deserves the chance to thrive, to discover their strengths, and to prepare for the future. Danny the Soccer Player

Dannylovedsoccermore than anything He would dribble a ball around the kitchen, kick pinecones into imaginary goals, and even named his socks “Goalie” and “Striker ” Every Saturday, he wore his lucky blue jersey and ran onto the field with the Sonic Boom, hislocalteam.

But this Saturday was different.

Danny’steamhadmadeit to the Championship Game, and they were going to face their biggest rivals: the Iron Tigers. The Tigers were fast, strong, and had never lost a gameallseason.

The Sonic Boom worked together, andbyhalftime, the scorewastied2–2.

Coach Maria smiled “This is the heart I was talkingabout!”

With only five minutes left in the game, the Tigers made another goal. Now it was 3–2. Danny’s legs were tired, andsweatdrippedfrom his forehead, but he wasn’t going to quit. Then, it happened. His teammate

With your term, or for some the final, examination coming up, you will have to ensure you make the best effort in this, which would include most of all the tests that are in writing. This means that you have to prepare beforehand in specialways. Youcandoso byfollowingthesetips.

Whentakingawritten test, you can improve your chances by following the first rule of going prepared intotheexaminationroom.

Firstly, ensure that your pen, pencil and other instruments are in good order Havingagoodnight’s rest is also a necessary preparation. Be sure that youarriveatthetestroomin time so that you can get s e t t l e d d o w n a n d

comfortable with the surroundings before the test begins.

When the test starts, followtheserules:

1. First read over each question twice so as to ensure you understand exactlywhatisrequired.

2. Quickly preview the entire test and determine which are the easy and difficult questions, with the intention of working on the easier ones first. This will also work towards giving you the confidence needed in solving the harder problems.

3 Write down on a separate sheet any informationyouarelikelyto needlater, soastoavoidthe worry of trying to get these while you are actually

Proper preparation for any examination will ensure that you make a determined effort towards passing it.

5. Write legibly so that therewouldbenodoubtasto whatyouhavewritten.

6. Work at a steady but unhurried rate, and try to finish with enough time to review your answers at the end.

7.Lastly,theimportance of checking and rechecking your answers cannot be over-emphasised. Checkall your answers in a critical manner so that you do not overlook any mistakes you mighthavemade.

This means that, in planningyourtime, youwill need to leave some space at the end of your answers to review your effort, correct any mistakes and include anyomissions.

Ifyouhavefollowed these tips, and if you have previously put your study

Getting stuck on a problem does not mean that you cannot do well on the rest of the test. Instead of telling yourself negative things, saytoyourself:“I’ve done harder than this before”; “I will remember how to do this if I relax and try to recall what I have learnt”; “This is only one problem, and I will do well intheothers”.

PERKSOF INDEPENDENCE

Meanwhile, Mr Austin who was still a young man when Guyana became an Independent State spoke of some of the perks ofbeingaSovereignState.

Herecalledthat“Thecitywas gaily decorated, beautifully decorated with emblems and slogans.”

The first time he saw the Golden Arrowhead, Austin recalled was at the ceremony where Dr. Jagan embraced Burnham.

“Itwasabigcrowdthereand that crowd of people, most of whom thought that Guyana would have never been an independent country because of negativedevelopmentswithinthe country, mainly the riots and unrest that had their hopes of Independencedashed.”

But what he also recalled about living in Independent Guyana is opportunities that openedupformanycitizens.

“I was young but I had the

Momentsthat markedGuyana’s...

feeling Guyana finally becameanindependentStatethat we would realize all the dreams and ambitions that this country hadhadforsometime.”

He noted that he was one of the persons who benefited from the opportunity to study abroad—something that could have never happened in preindependentGuyana.

The former diplomat noted that this was one of the many perksofindependence.

“Before that, Guyana was a place that many would find unrecognizable it was socially segregated and virtually an apartheid state; in the sense that ifyouwereofacertaincolourof race there were clubs you couldn’t join – for instance the Watooka Club in Linden that was reserved for Europeans

All of the clubs around Georgetown were also racially segregated

As a result, Austin recalled that one of the first courses of actiontakenbyPremierBurnham wastopassalawthatclubshadto beintegrated.

A n o t h e r p e r k o f independence came in form of employment.

, y to work in the bank or certain areas you had to be a certain social standing or race The place opened where people could be employed on the basis of merit and qualifications generally not the colour of your skin ”

“Now Guyanese were free to pursue any path in life on the basis of merit and not based on race, religion or politics,” the retired Foreign Service officer explained.

He said that many citizens saw independence as opening up new opportunities and making the country more equal for all persons.

“Then a lot of people were like me, I grew up in Da Silva Street [Newtown] my parents relativelypoor…Youhadasense now after independence that you had a chance, new opportunities toseize….”

“I don’t think without independenceIwouldhavegone to England to study… In those days, people like me never got scholarships, all the scholarships went to the Europeans or what you would call the big shots of society,”Mr Austinsaid.

Nigel Hughes designates non-lawyers

to address Oil Spill Law

…says he will not speak on every issue while Ramjattan unsure about Bill's status

Attorney-at-law and presidential candidate of the AllianceForChange(AFC), Nigel Hughes, on Friday, refused to comment on the controversial Oil Spill Law that was passed in the National Assembly two weeksago.

As a lawyer, the party leader, during a press conference, was invited to sharehislegalopiniononthe legislation, which has now

been assented to by PresidentIrfaanAli.

He, however, made it clear that the AFC will be managed differently under his stewardship, and designated persons will speak on various subject areas.

In this manner, Hughes said he will not be the sole spokespersonforhisparty

He reasoned, “I know that you are accustomed to political parties having one speaker who speaks on absolutelyeverything.

Thisisoneoftheareasin which the AFC defines and

“Wedon'thaveaGod. We have several competent people, and we will be setting up the institutions that will be analysing data, which we will share with the people,” Hughescontinued.

To this end, the leader said both Member of Parliament (MP) David Patterson and former Executive Director of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Dr Vincent Adams, are designated to speak on oil and gas, while the Parliamentary leader, Khemraj Ramjattan, could alsorespond.

Thepositiontakenbythe presidential candidate has raised eyebrows, especially since Hughes has refused to speak on issues involving a client of his law firm, ExxonMobil Guyana Limited (EMGL) Some

stakeholders believe that Hughes, as not only a presidentinwaitingbutalso aprominentattorney, should have seized the opportunity toaddhisvoicetothedebate given its grave national importance.

Health officials on high alert as new

COVID variant detected – Dr. Anthony

Minister of Health

Dr. Frank Anthony said on Saturday that health officials are on high alert as a new COVID variant has been detected. Dr. Anthony, in a comment to the Kaieteur News, said that precautionary measures are being taken given the global reports.

“There is a strain called NB 1.8.1 that is circulating, but this is in other countries, and we have seen in those countries that it has caused a slight increase in hospitalisation,” Dr. Anthony said.

In light of this, he stated that local hospitals and personnel are on alert and putting systems in place to check persons if they demonstrate symptoms of the virus.

“What we are doing is putting our system in alert and making sure they follow the protocol if people have symptoms, flu-like symptoms and they also check them for COVID,” he stated.

With the ports of entry to the country on alert, he said more precautionary measures are happening at the hospitals countrywide.

Meanwhile, a memo that was dispatched to the West Demerara Region Hospital in Region Three advised that a designated area should be established for any COVIDpositive patients.

The document, which circulated on social media,

stated, “Dear Supervisors, as you are aware, there has been a recent rise in COVID-19 cases.

Please be informed that a designated area has been established adjacent to the Emergency Room to accommodate all stable COVID-19 positive inpatients, including prenatal mothers.”

Meanwhile, there have been reports circulating on social media that a case of the new variant has been

Gaza

detected in the country. However, the minister denied that, stating, “not true”.

With countries like China

and the United States of America confirming cases of the new variant, the World Health Organisation (WHO) said in a May 23 release that “NB.1.8.1 has been designated a SARS-CoV-2 variant under monitoring (VUM) with increasing proportions globally, while LP.8.1 is starting to decline.”

In March 2020, Guyana detected its first case of the COVID-19 virus, which has since killed over 1000 persons locally.

From page 40 with GHF, saying it lacks neutrality and its distribution model forces the displacement of Palestinians.

Still, UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric told reporters on Friday that while any aid that gets to those who need it is “good”, aid deliveries are having “very, very little impact”.

“The catastrophic situation in Gaza is the worst since the war began,” he said.

With only three of the four distribution points set up to receive aid from the GHF, people like Layla al-Masri, a displaced Palestinian, are leaving empty-handed.

“What they are saying about their will to feed the people of Gaza is all lies. They neither feed people nor give them anything to drink,” she said.

‘Parents giving children water’ Abdel Qader Rabie, another displaced Palestinian, said his family has nothing to eat. “No flour, no food, no bread, we have nothing at home,” he said.

“Every time I go to get

aid, I hold a box and hundreds of people crowd over me. Earlier, UNRWA [UN agency for Palestinian refugees] used to send me a message, [and] I would go and get aid. Now there’s nothing. If you are strong, you get aid. If you are not, you leave emptyhanded,” Qader Rabie said.

Eri Kaneko, UN humanitarian affairs spokesperson, also criticised the type of aid that UN agencies are being allowed to bring into Gaza.

“Israeli authorities have not allowed us to bring in a single ready-to-eat meal.

The only food permitted has been flour for bakeries. Even if allowed in unlimited quantities, which it hasn’t been, it wouldn’t amount to a complete diet for anyone,” Kaneko said.

Palestinians who received GHF aid said their packages included rice, flour, canned beans, pasta, olive oil, biscuits, and sugar.

Meanwhile, the UN special rapporteur on the right to food, Michael Fakhri, described the GHF as a “bait to corral people” which “vio-

lates every principle of international law”.

“This is aid being used … to push people out from the north into militarised zones … and it’s about humiliating people, and it’s about controlling the population.

This has nothing to do with stopping starvation,” he said.

Al Jazeera’s Hind Khoudary, reporting from Deir el-Balah in Gaza, said not much food is coming into the enclave as the number of trucks entering and the aid they are carrying is very limited

“Despite the trucks’ entry over the past few days, Palestinians say they have not really received any food because there have not been any normal distribution points,” she said, adding that many are going back with their pots empty.

“Some parents say they are giving their children water just to make them feel full. People say they are willing to do anything for one bag of flour or one food parcel. They are very desperate.”
