…AS WIN AND APNU SQUARE OFF WITH PPP
Amid allegations
of electoral irregularities, recounts of ballots in SubDistrict 4 (East Coast Demerara) and parts of Region5(Mahaica-Berbice) and Region 8, PotaroSiparuni, beganonThursday andwillbecontinuingtoday
The recounts were initiated following requests made by the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) and the We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) parties, both of which claim discrepanciesin therecently concluded2025Generaland RegionalElections.
These recounts must be completed before any official declaration of the newpresidentcanbemade.
On Wednesday, leaders of both APNU and WIN submittedformalrequeststo the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) for recounts in several regions.
APNU’s presidential candidate, Aubrey Norton, indicated that his party requested recounts in Regions Four, Seven, and Ten. However, GECOM only granted a recount for Sub-District 4 of Region Four, deeming that request valid Meanwhile, WIN’s presidential candidate, AzruddinMohamed, alleged that his party received multiple credible reports of serious irregularities, including missing Statements of Poll (SOPs), tampered ballot boxes, and
voter fraud involving nonresidents.
He described the elections as neither free nor fair Mohamed said that as result, his party is seeking recount in a number of regions including Region Eight. However, GECOM denied WIN’s recount request, statingthattheparty representative who submitteditwasnotproperly accredited to do so. A subsequent request by WIN for a Region 4 recount was also rejected, according to officialcorrespondencefrom GECOM. However subsequently after, the recount for Region 8 was granted.
The recount began at GECOM’s headquarters with a focus on 391 ballot boxes from Region 4 SubDistrict 4 and 77 from parts ofRegion5.
At around 18:15
GECOM Commissioner
Sase Gunraj provided an update stating that over 100 boxeshadbeenprocessedby that time. He noted that 25 tables had been set up to work simultaneously, each manned by three GECOM staff members Most political parties had also assigned agents to observe the process Gunraj emphasized that, so far, the recount revealed no significant changes in vote counts compared to the original SOPs. “There may beonetherethataquestionis asked about. But by and large, there has been no significant change in the results,”hesaid.
He confirmed that after completing the count for Sub-District 4, the team wouldproceedtorecountthe 77ballotboxesfromRegion 5. Opposition-nominated

Commissioner Vincent Alexander echoed similar sentiments, confirming that to date, there had been no major deviations in the numbers.
However, the recount processhasnotbeenwithout debate Around midday, APNU party agent Shaneka Haynes voiced concerns, claiming “everything is going wrong,” though she did not provide specific details.AnotherAPNUagent a l s o e x p r e s s e d dissatisfaction with the process, indicating that the party was not pleased with how the recount was being conducted.
Meanwhile, Odessa Primus,GeneralSecretaryof WIN,commentedonatense moment during the recount. Avideocirculatingonsocial mediashowedadisputeover thevalidityofballotsmarked on the party symbol rather

She noted that the process should be straightforward and respectful.“Ithasgottenabit betteraftertheblow-upafew minutes ago, of course, by thePPPagents, whichisvery

As the day progressed intoevening, largegroupsof supporters from the PPP/C and WIN parties gathered near the GECOM office. Notably, therewasnovisible presence of APNU supportersinthearea.

Dear Editor, Engagements with the public in Guyana found queries about the reason behindarecount.Whatisthe rationalebehindtherecount? Would it change the numbers?
This missive is written before the start of the recount Numbers may change slightly because of human errors, but seat calculationishardlylikelyto change.
The 2020 election was different from that of last Monday's. A recount was justifiablein2020inlightof all the issues on the initial count and deliberate errors, etc So, the parties and GECOMagreedtoarecount as allowed in law On the currentrecount, eventhough
the law allows for a recount of ballots, there should be sufficient justification or grounds and reasons for it. One can't simply have a recount just because one wantstohaveit.
The 2025 electoral process was the most transparent in Guyana's history Votingwasrelatively 'easy', and there were hardly any major issues. I traveled around as an independent observerandreporter Voting wasslow;thesteadyflowof votingasin2020wasabsent. By mid-afternoon, polling stations were virtually empty The low turnout was confirmedinthenumbersof ballotscast.
There were no problems withclosingofballotingand the count Agents and
observers were everywhere. Each party had its polling agent at the count after the closeofballot. Theagentof each party witnessed the count. Each party also had counting agent. Each ballot was shown to the agent and announcedasmarkedforthe party
The total count at each pollingboothwasconcluded in witness of all agents and observer SOPwas prepared and agreed upon by all the agents and GECOM staff. Eachagentsignedoffonthe count on the SOP The only errors could have been human in entering the numbersontheSOPandthe computermechanics.
Each party has in possession all the SOPs for all ten regions. The parties
know the numbers. They know from their calculation how many seats they won. Unlessegregiouserrorswere observed, the process of announcing the official results should not be delayed.
GECOM should be allowed to complete the process quickly and announcethefinaltabulation and allocation of seats. It is very clear that incumbent PresidentIrfaanAlihaswon re-election and the PPP has won a decisive victory Shenanigans are delaying the inevitable Let the President be sworn in, appoint the cabinet, and the work of governance begin underthenewterm.
YoursSincerely, VishnuBisram

The incumbent PPP/C is sitting tight and right from a well-deserved election fight and is purged to win the majority seats in parliament to form the Government to manage the affairs of the people and state for another five years From all indications, the PPP/C has increased their seats by at least ten percent. This is at the time of writing when GECOM has declared the PPP/C as winner in Region 4,aformerstrongholdforthe PNC who has never lost in thatRegion.
One of the reasons will certainly substantiate the fact that there are crossover votes. Many electorates left their former parties to lend supporttothePPP/C.Thisis based on issues and not race and performance and not promises.

DearEditor,
On Friday, 29th August 2025, at a PPP political campaign meeting at the Stabroek Market Square, Attorney General Anil Nandlall said, “They insult you; they call you big batty Africans; they call you house slaves; they call you the nastiest things Well, I want you to tell them that the NationalHeroofthiscountry is Cuffy, and Cuffy was a proud and upstanding house slave. Nothing wrong with being a house slave.” This contemptuous statement affirmsNandlal'ssupportfor an economic system that oppressed millions of Africans and still negatively impacts the descendants of e n s l a v e d p e o p l e Furthermore, he downplays Cuffy'soppositiontoslavery as evidenced by the 1763 BerbiceSlaveRevolt.
Present at the meeting were several African Guyanese supporters of the PPP, including former Mayor and current Councillor Patricia Chase Green and Councillor Steven Jacobs. Subsequent to the statement, these attendees applauded Nandlall It is unclear
whether they fully understood his remarks
However,Ihavenoreasonto question their level of comprehension; thus, their approval of this abhorrent statement clearly points to selflessness and internalised racism. There is evidence suggesting that the PPP has treated African Guyanese differently over time Undoubtedly, Nandlall's contemptuous statement reflects his party's view of African Guyanese His utterances were as easy as breathing oxygen and must have been a conceived idea hehasofAfricanGuyanese. Weareremindedinmany narrations when the Prophet (saw) was born, the thrones of kings shook, palaces crumbled, idolsintheKabaa fell, and fires of worship were extinguished These signs were evidence of the power and favor that Allah (swt) would bestow on his FinalMessenger Prophet Mohammed
(saw) suffered many hardships as an orphan and an adult. He (saws) endured years of persecution before He (saws) marched triumphantly into the city of his birth at the head of the largest army ever assembled in Arabian history. Through it all, the Prophet (saw) remainedfaithfulandsetthe example of how to live in a manner that is pleasing to Allah (swt). The Prophet (saw) was humble, loyal, honest, patient, considerate, compassionate, and merciful The Prophet's (saw) character was of such high moral excellence that even his enemies testified to it,andhewasknownamong hispeopleasal-Amîn—the Trustworthy Allah (swt) confirmed:

His dying words were filled with care, concern and a recipe for success: “Treat your women well, anddonotoppressyour servants, the prayer, the prayer, don'tbeneglectfulof the prayer O God, my highest companion, my highestcompanion.”
Prophet Muhammad (saw) displayed a true and abiding love for his

a c h i e v e d what no one thought possible. In a few short months it not only muscled its way into the National Assembly but also reduced APNU, that once fearsome leviathan, to a whimpering relic. It should have been a moment for champagne, forvictorylaps, for speeches about a new dawn.Instead,likeahalf-wit drunkonitsowncleverness, WIN has managed to make itselflookridiculous.
Theabsurditybeginswith its leader, AZMO The man should be walking on air, paradinghis16seats Instead, he is muttering darkly about “irregularities” The very election that saw a fantastic performance from WIN, he nowsays, istainted.
One must ask whether the irregularities so selective, so sophisticated, that they allowed WIN to displace APNU but somehow conspired against itinothercorners?Thisisthe sort of double-speak one expects from losers, not from men who, by any measure, have just performed a political miracle.
There are, to be fair, complaints worth making.
International observers noted the imbalance in campaign financing AZMO, if he had sense, would have seized on that theme.Buthewillnot.None of them will Because campaign financing reform would mean opening the books, naming the donors, unmasking the benefactors. And no political party in Guyana – whether WIN,
APNU, AFC, or the entrenchedPPPC–wishesto
expose the sources of their campaignfinancing.
Nor is AZMO wrong to grumble about the intimidationandharassment his fledgling movement faced on the hustings. The PPPCdeployedthepoliceas though they were an extension of its campaign team, stopping his convoy, curtailing his reach. These were the dirty tricks of incumbency, and they shouldbecalledout.
But having registered these complaints, AZMO loses all credibility when he leaps, withoutproducingthe evidence, to the charge that polling day itself was corrupt On the very Facebookpagesthattrumpet his name, there were posts celebrating the smoothness of the process. Now, with a whiff of triumph in his nostrils, he claims otherwise.
One has seen this pantomime before. APNU andtheAFCperformeditin 2020. Then too, the polls weredeclaredpeaceful, only for the losers to suddenly discover battalions of dead menvoting, migrantscasting ghostly ballots from New York and Toronto. It was dishonourablethen, anditis dishonourable now.AZMO, inapingthatposture, reveals the hollowness of his politics.Thenewmessiahof opposition politics turns out to be little more than a mimic, parroting the script ofthediscreditedoldguard. Even more contemptible isthemutteringfromWIN’s camp that the PPPC could not possibly have won RegionFour Thisisstraight from the APNU playbook. But APNU’s leaders, faced with imminent irrelevance,
at least have the excuse of desperation. Aubrey Norton knows thathis own political futureinonthelineandheis not likely to escape that reckoning.
AZMO has no such excuse He has just humiliatedAPNUandgiven thePPPCascare.Yetinstead of basking in the glow, he trudges down the same paranoid path, bleating aboutirregularities.
What, then, explainsthis self-sabotage? Perhaps, just maybe, it is the more sordid explanation blared by the PPPC that WIN was never about national political renewal but about the Mohameds, aboutsanctions, about using politics as a lever. If that theory holds, then the election, for WIN, was indeed a zero-sum game.Foritwouldmeanthat it was not about 16 seats or displacing APNU; it was about ensuring that the machinery of the State might, oneday, beunderthe control ofAZMO. In such a scenario, if he did not win outright, the venture failed. In that case, the complaints of irregularities are merely thecryofagamblerwhohas losthisfinalbet.
Whateverthemotive, the result is the same. AZMO tarnishes his own achievement Instead of being remembered as the manwhoinmonthsreshaped
Guyana’s opposition landscape, he risks being dismissed as another crank, another voice in the chorus of grievance that has long disfigured the country’s politics.Hissupporters, who believed they were backing freshness and audacity, may well feel betrayed For nothing is more infuriating
than watching one’s champion imitate the very vices he was supposed to vanquish.
WIN had the chance to break with the past. It could haverisenabovethemuckof c o n s p i r a c y a n d recrimination, could have stood as proof that a new political culture was
possible Instead, it has chosen to crawl into the same swamp, repeating the same complaints, the same hypocrisies, the same contemptfortheintelligence of the Guyanese people What began as triumph now curdlesintofarce.

Whetherit has been made official or not, the elections are over, and it is time for all Guyana to get going. Get off the addictiveelectionskick, and let'sallgetamoveon. Whethertheycareforme or not, I don't care Guyanese need for them to care All that energy manifested recently to forge to the heights that they are nowperched.
I am watching to weigh how much of that same drive, that hands-on intimacy, thatfeveredbustle, will now be directed away from them and their interests. Awaytowardsthe

I have more spots than theowlofole, morefreckles than the leopards of yore, i.e., no change. As Shirley Caesar sang so powerfully, “after nine months of carrying you, after all…, no charge.”Foritspart,Guyana needs to charge ahead and I look towards President Ali, who I have recommenced calling by name. It should convey something to my friendsinthePPP
Ihavealreadyadjusted,I can just as well advance to where the preference is not togo.

‘Wedidn’twinRegion4,butwecutAPNU’sdominance’
General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP), Bharrat Jagdeo said that his party did not win Region Four, but rather significantly narrowed the opposition’s dominance in thedistrict, cuttingthegapto just over 1,000 votes while the opposition lost over 20,000votes.
Jagdeo made the comments at his party’s weekly press conference on ThursdayatFreedomHouse. He dismissed the leader of the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU), Aubrey Norton’s insistence
thatthe2025electionresults in Region Four, which placed the PPP/C as the single largest political party, wereimplausible.
Jagdeopointedoutthatin 2020, APNU dominated Region Four with 116,941 votes against the PPP’s 80,920, a lead of more than 36,000. But by 2025, the political landscape had shifted sharply as APNU’s vote count fell to 46,956 while the PPP climbed to 87,536, an increase of more than 6,000. “This is not impossible in an election in RegionFour,”hecontended.
“And they didn’t drop from 116,000 to 40-something thousand. They dropped to 88,000 combined because WIN took a significant part of APNU’s votes,” he explainedtoreporters.
WeInvestinNationhood (WIN),ledbyUnitedStatessanctioned businessman Azruddin Mohamed, according to the declaration made by the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM), is the second party to secure the most votesintheregion.
Jagdeo also said that the PPP emerged as the single
- Jagdeo
largest political party in key constituencies of North Georgetown, including S o p h i a , K i t t y , Campbellville, Alberttown, Queenstown, Kingston, and Central Georgetown Together, APNU and WIN managed 16,162 votes, but the PPP’s 13,070 placed it ahead of both individually, makingitthestrongestforce in areas traditionally seen as opposition strongholds. “It’s utter nonsense,” Dr Jagdeo
stressed as he dismissed Norton’s narrative, stating that, “In Region 10, APNU moved from complete domination of the region to having lost the region, something we have never seeninthiscountry.”
Meanwhile, Jagdeo also spoke about his party’s overall performance, drawing comparisons betweenthenumberofvotes secured by the PPP/C in the 2020and2025elections.He said five years ago, the PPP/C won by a margin of just 0.3 per cent, meaning it secured 50.7 per cent of
votes compared to the combined opposition’s 49.3 percent.
This meant that the PPP/C won those elections with a difference of 6,390 votes In this year’s elections, however, the PPP/C secured 55.32 per centofthevote, comparedto the 44.68 per cent for the combined opposition. This translates to 46,530 more votes than theAPartnership for National Unity (APNU), We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) and the other smaller politicalpartiescombined.

and leave a drunk they side with this attack, they are condemning their people to be executed at sea. Their fishermen are being condemned to execution,' he said.
His comments come after Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar praised a US military strike on an alleged drug carrying vessel in the southern Caribbean which the White House claimed earlier this week killed 11 'narco terrorists' who were part of the Tren de Aragua Venezuelan gang Persad-Bissessarwhoearlier welcomed the US' military presence in the Caribbean earlier stated that US forces should kill all drug traffickers'violently.'
Cabello on Wednesday citednumerousreportsofthe event in international media, claiming that questions were beginning to arise on the US' action, its legality and the
information provided by its officials.
Onthevessel, depictedin flamesinfootagereleasedby the US after the strike was announced on Tuesday, he said it was a 'little boat' that looked as if it were a fisherman'sboat.
Holding up photos comparing a ship to the vessel, hesaid,“Somemedia are already appearing on their screens in English and other languages, talking about the small boat. They no longer speak of a ship, there is one they call a little boat. Here in Venezuela we are waging a real fight againstdrugs.
Now from all this and what I have gatheredthis is a ship right? And what about this?Thisisafisherman,”he said.
US Strike on Venezuelan 'drug-carrying'vessel
Stating that he had a lot of doubts on the situation, he
said that if it had occurred as described by the US, it could b e v i e w e d a s a n 'assassination'and'murder'.
“Theirownlawsprohibit it.Andtherighttodefenceof those who were there? I mean the video they are saying is evidence against them. They assassinated a group of people and I saw fivebuttheysaid11.Butthat is what they are declaring, their murder is a blunder You can't utter a blunder in yourowndefence.
You're confessing that you committed a crime,” he said.
Reading from a written statement, he referred to the strike as nothing more than an illegal massacre in internationalwaters.
“ T h e y v i o l a t e d international law, violated their own laws and they violated a basic principlethe right to life.This was not justice, this was barbarism.
Animperialactthatpretends to impose itself as an example but that once again exposesthedoublestandards o f t h e Wa s h i n g t o n Administration. They talk aboutdemocracyandhuman rights while they practise summary executions at sea,” hesaid.
He said that Venezuela was not complicit in drug trafficking or executions at highsea.
However he said he would be happy if the US embarked upon an internal crusadetotakedowncartels.
“The whole world would have apathy, but not even in the movies have we ever seenonestoportakedownof a drug cartel in the United States and it is the country in the world where the inhabitants consume it the most,”hesaid.

“Of course you are callingpeoplenames.
We don't do that here. If he can identify, maybe he is like that too or he is a mad man. It would be fair if I say to him because of what is happening now with the United States, that he is facilitating drugs in this country?Isheadrugpusher? Isheapimp?”hesaid.

US State Dept. employee sentenced to 4 years for selling defense information
WASHINGTON, Sept 4 (Reuters) - A U.S. State Department employee was sentenced to four years in prison on Thursday for conspiring to collect and transmit national defense information to individuals he believed to be working for China’s government, the Justice Department said.
Michael Schena, 42, of Alexandria, Virginia, worked at State Department headquarters in Washington. He held a top secret security clearance and had access to information up to the secret level, the Justice Department said.
Beginning in April 2022, Schena communicated with people he met online through various platforms and provided them sensitive U.S. government information in exchange for money, the Justice Department said in a statement.
Two of these individuals represented themselves as employees of international consulting companies, the
Justice Department said. Believing that they were working on behalf of China’s government, Schena continued his relationship with them, the Justice Department said.
In August 2024, Schena met an individual at a hotel in Peru who provided Schena $10,000 and a cellphone that was intended to be used for Schena to receive tasks and transmit information, pros-
ecutors said.
In October 2024, while at work, Schena used the cellphone he received in Peru to photograph and transmit at least four classified documents that contained national defense information and which were classified as secret, according to prosecutors.
Surveillance video captured Schena again using the
cellphone to photograph seven documents marked as “secret” that contained national defense information in February this year, the Justice Department said, adding FBI agents seized the phone before he could transmit those documents and arrested him.
A representative of Schena could not immediately be contacted.

School reopening set for Monday
The Ministry of Education on T h u r s d a y informed parents, students and teachers that schools will be reopening on Monday, September 8, 2025 for the 2025/2026 academic year “We wish all our parents, children and teachers a successful Christmas term and especially welcome the
children who will be attending nursery, primary and secondary for the first time,” the ministry said on itsFacebookpage It was previously reported that schools were initially expected to be reopened on September 1, but with general and regional elections, the reopeningwasdelayedbya week Part of the reason is that some schools were being used as polling stations in a number of communities.
The campaign is over. The ballots have been counted and the people of Guyana have spoken. What the country needs now is healing, unity, and a clear focus on the future, not a continuation of the bitter rhetoric that has long poisoned our politics.
Unfortunately, the tone set at the PPP's postelection press conference, particularly by General Secretary Bharrat Jagdeo, struck the wrong chord. Yesterday at his weekly press conference, the talking down of opponents and indulging in mudslinging at this juncture does nothing to advance the national interest.
The election season is behind us; the responsibility of leadership now demands a shift in language, tone, and approach. Guyanese of every community, class, and political persuasion are grappling with the same realities: a rising cost of living, the need for jobs, better services, and a society that values fairness. These challenges cannot be met with divisive politics.
They require collaboration, respect, and the understanding that no one party holds a monopoly on wisdom. It is time to move past the rancor. Leaders must demonstrate statesmanship by bringing citizens together, not driving them further apart. The future of Guyana depends not on who won the last round of verbal sparring, but on how unitedly we face the road ahead.
