WPA admits it was not monitoring Roopnaraineâs ministerial performance By Abena RockcliffeCampbell Asked to grade the performance of its only party member sitting in Cabinet, the Working People Alliance (WPA) had to decline. The party claimed that it is illequipped to say how well or how poorly Dr. Rupert Roopnaraine has been performing simply because âwe were not monitoring him.â WPAâs failure to at least monitor its political face in government was made known by its executive member, Dr. David Hinds, at the partyâs most recent press conference. At that press conference there was much talk about President David Grangerâs decision to move Roopnaraine as the Minister of Education and place him as the Minister of the Public Service Ministry within the Ministry of the Presidency. The way this happened did not go down well with the WPA. The party is also complaining about being side-

lined in Government. The Party said that it was not given any solid reason why the President chose to move Roopnaraine. But, since it was not monitoring his performance the WPA could not say whether the politician was doing a good job and therefore could not present a reason why he should not have been moved. Asked about Roopnaraineâs temporary replacement, Nicolette Henry,
Dr. Hinds said, âWe want to leave Henry alone; we are not too interested in that.â Dr. Hinds said, too, âWe do not feel that there is a particular ministry in the government to which we are entitled but WPA feels that it should be given a substantive ministry. It should a ministry that makes a difference.â Dr. Hinds refused to speak on the merits attached to the Public Service until such time that the President
24-year-old drives over, reverses on carpenterâs head A 24-year-old driver was nabbed on Saturday afternoon when he revisited an accident scene at Second Street, Herstelling, East Bank Demerara (EBD). The driver, who has been identified as Ryan Seecharran of Lot 361 Herstelling reportedly, drove over Kalicharran Goordialâs head and killed him around 15:00hrs on Saturday. The 49-year-old victim was said to have been intoxicated and was lying on the roadway when he met his demise. Reports are that after killing Goordial, the driver drove to a wash bay. It was when he was returning home that an eyewitness pointed him out to traffic ranks at the scene. He was nabbed and taken to the Providence Police Station where his vehicle, PVV 4911 was impounded. The Guyana Police Force in a release said that Goordial, of Creek Dam, Herstelling was heavily under the influence of alcohol and was lying in the centre of a cross street with his head about five feet from the edge of the road. An eyewitness reported that the driver was proceeding east along the centre of the street when he suddenly turned left (north) and drove over the victimâs head. When the suspect observed what had happened, he reportedly reversed on the
- Nabbed after revisiting the scene victimâs head and fled the scene. The dead manâs sister, Jasmattie Goordial, said that she was heading home around 16:00hrs when she noticed a crowd on the street. She explained that when she got out of the vehicle to enquire what had happened, she noticed that it was her sibling who had been killed. The woman is annoyed with the fact that the driver did not render assistance but instead, drove awayâleaving her brother there. âIt not like he doesnât
know my brother. We are all from the same village and my brother did work for them so he knew who it was that he killed,â the woman noted. She said that she was informed that the driver went to wash off the blood from his car and was heading back home when an eyewitness to the accident pointed him out to the police ranks that were present at the scene. Goordial admitted that her brother did drink. He lived with his siblings in Herstelling. The deceased had no wife or children.
informs the Party more on the mandate of the Public Service Ministry. Another executive member of the WPA, Tacuma Ogunseye, said, âUntil we hear from the President, a description of the Ministry and we can make a rational judgment, we would want to hold off speaking about the merits of the Public Service Ministry. âBut I will argue that because the Education Ministry is such a substantive ministry, probably with the highest spending allotment from the budget; it is hard to see how the other ministry can compare with that. But we will wait and see the role of the ministry. If we are entitled to a se-
nior Minister we should be entitled to a senior ministry. WPA said that the political parties in the APNU coalition are being stifled. Those parties are supposed to shape the direction of Government and the government is supposed to follow though based on the vision of the parties. Dr. Hinds said, âIn terms of shaping education policy we regret that we were not as forward, assertive as we should have been as well as in other areasâŠbut from now on rest assured that the WPA will take an active interest in the formulation of policy and direction.â WILLWPAPULL ROOPNARAINE? The partyâs executive said
that it will soon discuss if Dr. Roopnaraine will be replaced. Dr. Hinds told the media, âThe question of replacement did not come up with President Granger. We touched on it in our executive but have not discussed it in any length.â Despite the problems faced, the WPA remains committed to the coalition government. âWe have always championed coalition government from the time of Dr. Walter Rodney who put a lot of effort into something that we called a government for national unity and reconstruction in 1979. We have been the party of coalition and we do not want to be the party that kills it,â said Dr. Hinds.
