MAYWEATHER INSISTS Joel Garner re-elected Berto will be his last foe AS BCA PRESIDENT The unbeaten American in the ring on Wednesday with Mexican boxer Ramon Montano at Mayweather’s gym in Las Vegas.
Los Angeles (AFP) Outspoken welterweight king Floyd Mayweather insists his September 12 showdown with Andre Berto will be his last bout. “Nobody knows what the future holds, but right now, I’m cool and comfortable and having no second thoughts at all about retirement,” Mayweather said at an open workout in Las Vegas on Wednesday. “I had a good career, I
won every world title, but boxing is wear and tear on the body. “It’s time to hang ‘em up. I’m looking forward to working with some up-andcoming kids, going on walks and taking vacations.” It’s a vision of retirement few who have watched his career can really picture for the ultra-competitive American, who will be trying to equal Rocky Marciano’s legendary record of 49-0.
A chance to go to 50-0 could prove irresistible, as could the chance to inaugurate the MGM Grand’s new 20,000-seat arena in Las Vegas next year. But for now the 38-yearold Mayweather says he’s glad his success gives him the chance to decide when to quit the ring - a choice many in the sport are denied. “I’ve truly been blessed,” (Continued on page 77)
Bolt and Gatlin headed to Brussels, but will not meet
Bolt and silver medallist Gatlin of the USA enjoy a conversation following their men’s 200m final on Thursday.
Usain Bolt and Justin Gatlin will race again in Brussels next month, but not against each other, organizers of the Van Damme Diamond League meeting said yesterday. “No chance for rematch,” meeting director Wilfried Meert told Reuters in an email. “Will be Gatlin in the 100 and Bolt in the 200.” Bolt ended American Gatlin’s two-year unbeaten streak with victories in both
the 100 and 200 meters at the Beijing world championships, though his participation at the September 11 meeting in Brussels is contingent on fitness, his agent said. “Usain’s only scheduled race this year after Beijing is Brussels provided he comes through this meet fit and healthy,” Ricky Simms said in an email to Reuters. “When he gets back to Europe next week we will see how he
recovers from the exertions of the past week. “The big goal is Rio.” Bolt is expected to seek his third consecutive set of triple Olympic gold medals in Brazil next year. Prior to Beijing, Bolt and Gatlin had not met since September 2013 when the Jamaican won the 100 meters and Gatlin finished fourth in Brussels. Overall, Bolt holds an 8-2 advantage in career clashes.
