DIRECTOR’S LETTER

OUR GPS IN GWRRA

I

just purchased a new GPS for our motorcycle. It is about the third GPS we have owned since they first came out. We have always been amazed at all of the many things it can do to make everything easier, safer and more enjoyable before, during and after we ride our Wing. It was easy to adopt the idea, “Never leave home without it!” In the last day or two, I was reading through all of the instructions and directions on the many functions this incredible part of our motorcycling experience can provide us, virtually 24-7. It didn’t take long for me to start to compare the many similarities that a GPS and a Chapter Director in GWRRA have. Yeah, I know that sounds strange, but just humor me a bit. Both a GPS and a Chapter Director are always ready to offer us direction – they both lead the way. They can both steer us around distractions, detours and heavy traffic that stands in the way of us reaching our desired destination. Not only do the GPS and the Chapter Director help guide us in the right direction, but they also keep us informed of all of the many points of interest along the way – whether it’s learning about the many benefits of membership in GWRRA or the quickest route to the nearest Dairy Queen. Both offer us guidance and information along the way. If you are looking for entertainment or recreation, both of these sources of guidance are ready to supply you with many different choices. Just push a button and the information appears on either your GPS screen or your computer screen, as compiled by your Chapter Calendar. The acronym GPS stands for Global Positioning System, which works based on 24 well-placed satellites. In GWRRA we have the same thing – GWRRA Positioning System has hundreds of well-placed sources of information. We call them Chapter Directors, or District, Region or Deputy Directors; heck, even me, Your Director. We sincerely thank each and every one of them for all their assistance in “guiding” our Members toward the best possible experience in our Association. Thank you.

EDITOR’S LETTER

LOOKING GOOD

J

instituting more fun. Heck, you don’t even need a bike show for this one. Do it in association with a ride or fundraiser. June’s Wing World also contains other articles by other Members. Maurizio and Nunzia Oldani, Overseas Couple of the Year, write about their trip to Wing Ding 37 last fall in Huntsville all the way from Italy. Kevin Greenwald reviews the Seno S10, while John McIntyre takes you along on his journey tracing the Lewis and Clark Expedition Trail. If you are headed to Wing Ding 38, you might want to pay close attention. McIntyre heads through Montana and Big Sky Country on his trek that covered 5,000 miles in 12 days. We were also inspired by the Rider Ed piece we secured from our motorcycle safety friends outside the organization. It’s written by Kyle McCarty, who teaches motorcycle safety in Washington state. The story McCarty shares really stays with you. Read it. Share it. Let it stay with some folks who might need to hear its message. Last but not least, the June issue is brought to you by the letter, I mean, the word “farkle.” Love it or hate it, we decided to use the term in our pages. It is used to describe aftermarket motorcycle accessories that sparkle and are functional. We believe the term originated with dual-sport riders and spread into the vernacular of other bikers. Love it or hate it, we find it apt. Now that your bike is looking good, why not photograph it for Wing World? Find an interesting or unusual backdrop, say an old brick wall, a field of blooming wildflower or position your camera at ground level or high above your head for a sky or grass background. Focus. Shoot. Submit. Then be patient. Sometimes the publication process can take awhile. Don’t lose hope if your submission isn’t in the magazine right away. It can take a year or two from the time we receive your manuscript or photo until it sees print.

une signals summer in the Northern Hemisphere. That usually means better riding weather in many parts of the world where bikes laid in bed for long winter naps. In celebration of lots of good summer sunshine and maybe more importantly more of it, we focus on the transformation from amazing machine to exquisitely beautiful bike. Get ready to get your luminosity on. Get ready to polish the chrome, add a little pinstriping or artwork, or finally get that string of LEDs you’ve been thinking about. Whether you shine ’er up on a regular basis, are just now getting the winter off, or you are detailing your ride for an upcoming bike show, we introduce you to products and ideas from other Members. In addition in this issue, Claude Mitchell talks about what the Ohio District did when bike show attendance dropped and ANITA STIENSTRA they wanted to revitalize it. You might want to use their tip at Editor in Chief the Chapter or Region level to get more folks involved, while editor@gwrra.org

QUICK HITS This is where you’ll find articles, product reviews and other miscellaneous goodies that aren’t long enough to stand alone, but deserve a place in the book. If you have future submissions to this section, please send them to editor@gwrra.org with the subject line “Quick Hits.” PRODUCTS TAPP SERIES USB CONNECTOR 3BR POWERSPORTS WWW.3BRPOWERSPORTS.COM A key difference in the TAPP is ultra-low power draw at no load. This feature, combined with the inline fuse, allows it to be connected directly to the battery, making installation easy. No need to hunt for a switched power lead for fear of draining the battery. Each kit includes a 3BR patented Universal Mounting System, making it simple to mount on the dash or directly on the handlebar of any bike. This weatherproof cap system meets the IP65 Protection Standard (heavy water wash down), keeping moisture and dirt out of the connector. When this is combined with a patented TAPP CAPP USB cable, you have a true weatherproof power source when a USB cable is plugged in. Prices start at $32.95. GEARLOK ROCKY CREEK DESIGNS WWW.ROCKYCREEKDESIGNS.COM The GearLok utilizes a 150 cm long braided galvanized steel plastic coated cable to lock your helmet, jacket, backpack or any other accessory to your bike. Simply pass the loop end of the cable through a convenient part of your bike like the frame, handlebar or grab rail. Thread the other end through the loop and then through the object you want to secure. Next, insert the end of the cable into the lock slot and slide the lock up or down the cable to adjust the length. Press the snap button till you hear a click and scramble the four-digit security dial. When not in use, the cable and lock can fit into your carry bag or jacket pocket. ($21.95 cable) $37.95.

NEWS CORRECTION There is a price correction for the RIVCO Products LED Replacement Low Beam Headlight Bulbs shown in the May 2016 issue of Wing World, from $139.95 to $149.95. THE AUTOMATIC CHOICE From the very first machines he produced, Soichiro Honda wanted to make motorcycles more approachable for a wide range of riders. That philosophy has manifested itself in many ways: bikes that are lighter, handle better, last longer, require less maintenance. Early on Honda embraced convenient features like electric starting, features which became the rule rather than the exception. But one area in particular has been a focus of Honda’s user-friendly operation from day one: the transmission. Last year, only about five percent of the new cars sold in the United States featured a manual transmission— and anyone who’s negotiated rush-hour traffic in cities like Los Angeles, San Francisco, Boston, New York or Chicago can tell you why.

016

Honda’s next venture with an automatic motorcycle transmission came in 1976 with the CB750A Hondamatic. This mated the famous single-cam CB750 four-cylinder engine with a two-speed torqueconverter-equipped automatic transmission. Again, the rider needed to change gears by foot, but again there was no clutch lever and no chance of stalling. The same transmission design was offered on the 1978 CB400A Hawk, an innovative parallel-twin with other forward-thinking features like Comstar wheels, and the subsequent CM400A Hondamatic (1979-1981). In the ATV world, most Honda utility ATVs feature semiautomatic transmissions, with the exception of a couple of fully automatic models (the Rubicon, which for many years used a continuously variable hydrostatic, and the Rincon with a torque-converter-equipped three-speed automotive-style automatic.) Several newer ATVs also feature Honda’s Automatic Dual-Clutch Transmission (DCT) option. The DCT is clearly Honda’s most innovative transmission ever. Found as an option on an increasing number of motorcycles, like the NC700X, the CTX700, and the new Africa Twin, they’re really quite different from the automatics you find in most cars. Inside they look like conventional manual transmissions, with an input shaft, an output shaft, and gear pairs for every gear ratio. There’s no clutch lever, though, and the two multi-plate clutch packs are controlled electronically. While a rider can choose to shift manually with handlebar-mounted buttons, the bike’s sophisticated electronic controller does a great job on its own, seamlessly changing from one gear to the next, both upshifting and downshifting. Here, at last, we really have the best of both worlds: All the control, strength, and efficiency of a conventional manual gearbox, along with all of the convenience and ease of operation that Mr. Honda first envisioned. If you haven’t experienced a Honda DCT yet, do yourself a favor and try it for yourself. It’s as revolutionary as that first D-Type Dream. Until next month, ride safe, no matter what transmission you choose.

Honda’s first “real” motorcycle was the 1949 D-Type Dream. With a 98cc two-stroke single-cylinder engine, the D-Type also featured a unique, semi-automatic two-speed transmission. The rider shifted with his or her foot, but there was no clutch lever, and consequently no fear of stalling. This was a deliberate design philosophy on Mr. Honda’s part. Further refined, it became better known when Honda incorporated a similar version on the famous Super Cub. Mr. Honda was quoted as saying, “I want to make it so the noodle-shop delivery boy can balance his tray on one hand and operate the bike with the other.” You can still see these foot-shift semiautomatic transmissions on current Honda machines like the CRF50F, CRF70F and CRF110F trail bikes. Since the

Super Cub has gone on to become the most-produced motor vehicle in the world, it’s safe to say the design has been a success.

RIDER ED

ALL THE GEAR ALL THE TIME BY KYLE MCCARTY

A

TGATT – All the gear all the time. But for whom? Students? Other riders? Me? You? As we know, ATGATT is an ideology and attitude that all motorcycle safety gear should be worn at all times no matter what speed or perceived risk level. For a lot of folks, it isn’t just a phrase; it is a mindset. As riders/instructors, we consciously choose gear for rides. Sometimes our choice is based on protection, sometimes comfort, sometimes

018

visibility and sometimes image/ego. So, why this article? Sept. 29, 2015, I unfortunately had a mindset of “nothing will happen to me!” Because of this, I experienced an event that I’d like to share. I hope to inspire you to consider ATGATT in a different way. It was a wonderful, warm sunny day teaching a three-wheel class of engaged students. My years of teaching without any type of demo-ride challenge, slip or crash enabled me to be complacent, knowing

IGNITION

“nothing will (ever) happen to me!” Yes, I had let my ego, pride and image jade my gear choice. During one of my favorite demos, skidding to a stop, the front tire of the rig suddenly jerked left and grabbed an incredible amount of traction. In the last few feet of the demo, the rig instantly flipped. I don’t remember much except hearing a series of sickly crunching and snapping sounds. Not of metal when a bike hits pavement. Instead, it was my bones as the rig landed on me! For some reason, instead of doing a demo again in 3/4 open face style, I had lowered my modular helmet into full-face position just before starting. (Luckily, as rig parts slammed against the back of the helmet driving my “chin” into the pavement.) My protective Aerostich was sitting in the air-conditioned classroom staying cool. Sadly my long sleeve T-shirt, gloves and over-ankle footwear was all the protection I had. My choice to not wear an armored jacket, chest/back protector or shoulder armor, allowed my collar bone to be broken into four

RIDER ED

pieces, my scapula to be split, seven ribs broken in five pieces, and my lung to be perforated. My false sense of security is similar to a complacency that can be acquired when someone rides the same roads to and from work without any issues, day after day. This false sense of safety can hinder a rider from being fully aware and taking the unexpected into account. I don’t remember when I gave up wearing a lot of protective gear (beyond minimum curricula required) for demos. For some reason, I came to believe “nothing will happen to me!” Yet, lying in the hospital with a bunch of new stitches, a groovy new titanium plate and matching screws, a chest tube and a breathing exerciser thingy, I had a lot of time to reflect. One reflection was on “safety.” I realized that range rules and standards were not put in place for the 99 percent of riders who never crash or even have close calls. Instead, the range rules (run-off standards, maximum students per range and path-of-travel safety margins) were put in place for the percent who need it most. It’s the 1 percent (which I now speak as a part of) who can benefit most from watching an instructor gear up. Yes, even for a demo. When instructors wear gear, it sends a powerful message. It is only now that I’ve realized I have been doing a disservice to my students. Preaching one thing; yet demonstrating another. Karma rode in on Sept. 29. I rolled snake-eyes. I lost the risk-bet and crashed hard! What does all this mean? Simply, I invite you to consider what instructors wear to and from class and during demos. I invite instructors to encourage and inspire critical thinking skills about ATGATT. I now ask my students: If you knew that during your next ride you were going to crash, would your choice of gear be any different than what you typically ride in? If you knew that your partner, daughter/ son, mom or best friend was going to crash during their next ride, what gear would you encourage them to wear? My solution is ATGATT. Yes, every ride. Yes, every demo.

FUEL

RESCUE PLUS IS MONEY IN THE BANK

BY LARRY JOHNSON

H

ere’s a little story about why we should all carry Rescue Plus. On the way home after an August breakfast ride, I heard the sound no Gold Wing rider wants to hear. Imagine a metal coffee can with a bunch of change in it being shaken. That is the sound of a broken drive shaft. When the drive shaft quits, you coast to a stop and call a wrecker. I did this, employing Rescue Plus. I was 50 miles north of Phoenix on Highway 87 and the nice lady on the phone established that: 1. I was safe. 2. I could be seen from the highway. 3. I wanted to be towed to D&D Discount Motorcycles in Tempe. 4. I had a valid Rescue Plus number. She got my cellphone number and called back in about five minutes to tell me help was on the way and

would be there within an hour. She was physically located in Indiana. Less than an hour later, Mike from Quick Pik Towing in Mesa, Arizona, arrived. He was professional and knew what he was doing. We got the ’99 Gold Wing up on the bed and cinched down, and he took me the 62 miles to D&D. We computed what the cash price would have been for the service and came up with just over $300. So, I figure I have the next nine years of Rescue Plus already in the bank. At the dealer, Mike helped Owner Mark unload the Wing and by the next Tuesday, my baby, with 195,000 miles on it, was ready for the next 200K. I am grateful to the kind folks at Quick Pik Towing, and to Mark, Steve and Junior at D&D, but mostly to Rescue Plus for an exemplary job of saving my butt.

THREE ANGELS HELP A FRIEND

BY MARK LASOFF

S

at., Feb. 20, I was riding alone when I shifted gears and got no response from the bike. I thought I missed a gear. The bike had enough momentum to cruise off the road into a parking lot. I called a tow truck and as I waited, I called our Chapter FL-1X Director Geno Jette. He said he would meet me at the shop where the bike was towed. Waiting two hours for the tow was the worst part of the day. Finally I met up with Geno. He called angel No. 2 Bob Manes, our Motorist Awareness Coordinator, who drove up to George Bay’s home to pick up a trailer, and then fought traffic on 17 and

020

the bridge to come and tow my bike home. All this while angel No. 1, Geno, sat with me for almost two hours. Then as if that wasn’t enough, Geno came by Monday morning and we towed the bike all the way to Daytona to the bike shop for repair. That was another four hours of his time. I can’t begin to thank Geno, Bob and George for their help and friendship. Not knowing what was wrong or how to get the bike to the shop was extremely stressful and a harrowing experience. I nominate Geno, Bob and George for the Lifesaver Award.

I’m having a problem finding parts for my heated grips on my 2008 Wing. They are Hondaline, which were installed by the dealer when I bought the bike new. I have determined that the controller is bad. I am told that you cannot order this part. My local dealer ordered me a complete kit (08T70-MJG-671), which is made for the F6 and says nothing about the Gold Wing. In order to make this kit work, it appears I would have to start cutting and changing

022

ends on the wiring on my bike and I do not want to do this. I would like to find something that would just plug right into the wiring on the bike as it appears my original ones did. Can you recommend a good replacement? Thanks for your help. Bill Mitchell Estelline, South Dakota

for the 2006-2008 base model is not exactly enlightening, and I have my parts guy calling Honda in the morning to see what’s up with this. I found the #08T50-MCA-102, which I believe is for your bike, and my parts guy agrees, but on Honda’s parts website, the part shows as “not yet available.” BTW, you do have a base model, correct?

Don’t do anything to that kit that would prevent you from returning it. I certainly wouldn’t assume that it would work on your bike, even if you chopped and spliced to make it fit … which I recommend against. The parts fiche and numbers for the handgrip kit

I assume it is a base model as it does not have ABS or Navi. The CB and heated grips were added by the dealer at my request when I purchased it new. I will wait to see what you find. I appreciate your help as my local dealer sold out to the Yamaha dealer

IGNITION and it looks to me like the Honda end is going to be a distant second.

A:

Here’s the PDF installation, wiring diagram and testing instruc tions (see digital edition online) for the grip heater kit that your dealer installed on your GL1800 IIIA. That kit (08T50MCA-102) fits all ’01 to ’08 GL1800s that are not equipped with the full comfort package. Unfortunately, my parts guy has confirmed by phone with American Honda that the part has been discontinued, so owners of GL1800s with the standalone grip heater option installed are out of luck should the system need replacement, and separate repair parts were never offered. Because your controller/switch is a reliable, solid state unit, you might want to examine the testing instructions in the material I’ve attached. Your issue could be as simple as a blown 5-amp fuse – the one wired into the controller harness just behind the fairing panel. Testing that controller with an ohm meter isn’t possible, and testing with a self-powered test light

H7

will damage the unit. Look for wires or connectors pulled loose at the harness connections. Regarding the F6B kit you received, the research I’ve done on this indicates that the controller would be the only part you’d be able to use without a lot of wiring modifications, and you’d still need to use your original fused grip harness. I think a more cost effective approach would be to order just the F6B controller (35510-HAC-J00). Figure out a place and method to install that square controller, then remove the triangular plug from your original grip harness, and install new terminals to accept the individual push connectors on your new controller. According to the F6B shop manual, the wiring colors of the two controllers will be the same. The controller mount bracket is 64416-MJG-670, but it’s designed to mount the controller to the underside of a right fairing pocket cover that has a matching square hole on top. I doubt it’ll be useful for mounting in your original location.

Q:

I’ve noticed that when I get in a hurry and unplug the battery from my battery tender before unplugging the AC, that when I plug the battery back in with AC still connected, the tender lights go berserk and won’t reset. I have to unplug everything, then plug the battery in first, then connect the AC and everything returns to normal. Question: I’m looking at purchasing a dual battery tender (services two batteries). Will the tender work properly if at any time only one battery is attached to it and the other tender lead is not connected to anything? Or should both leads be connected to batteries when in use? Thanks for your advice and knowledge. Rich Fuller Delta, Colorado

CALL TOLL-FREE: 1-866-352-7251

The name “Battery Tender” is a registered trademark of Deltran Corporation, yet most folks seem to refer to anything designed to charge small batteries as a battery tender. My point is, I can’t tell from your description what brand or model charger you actually have, so researching its operation isn’t possible. With the assumption that your present charger is one of Deltran’s newer products, then yes … that is a normal result of improper connection/ disconnection. As a safety feature, these products will not produce an output voltage unless at least 3 volts are present on the battery clips or ring terminals. When you attach the battery first, the charger then “sees” voltage as soon as the AC cord is plugged in. Deltran’s dual unit operates in the same fashion. But because it contains two separate 1.25-amp chargers, only one needs to be connected to a battery for the unit to function. But remember, when attaching or removing a second battery, you must first disconnect the unit from AC power.

_____________________________________________ UNDER PRESSURE _____________________________________________

Q:

I am experiencing a problem with pressure building up in the gas tank. My 2000 GL1500 has 110,000 km on it and this problem only started last fall. When it started, I also noticed that it did not start right up as it has always done in the past, even if left unused for a couple of weeks. The bike has to turn over several times before starting, and now after setting a couple of hours, it still turns over several times before starting. There appears to be no issues with the way it works while riding, but when stopped, I smelled gas fumes and sometimes noticed them while driving. I keep the bike stored in my basement, so now until the pressure is off, I must leave it outside due to the gas fume smell. The pressure sometimes will build up after a couple of minutes of run time, on the odd occasion I have driven for a couple of hours before any pressure builds up. I had gotten into the habit of releasing the cap any time I would stop to check the pressure issue. My mechanic indicated that it could possibly be the gas cap or the petcock causing the problem. I replaced the cap [$158], the less invasive

2016-06_3_Ignition_Workbench.indd 22

of the two choices. The problem still exists. I checked the vent line off the cap by blowing in thru it and all seems OK, as air passed through it. Would the tank need to be removed to replace the petcock assembly or could you possibly give me advice as to some other places to check first? I have owned the bike since new and all service work has been completed by Honda mechanics. I do not mind spending the money to repair it; however, I do not want to spend it and have the problem still exist. This actually is the first repair work other than regular maintenance that has had to be done on the Wing. Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

A:

The fuel cap is designed to permit a certain level of pressure or vacuum, and I doubt it has any connection to your starting or fuel smell problems. One typical cause of this fuel stink issue on the GL1500 is seeping carburetor float bowl gaskets. It doesn’t take more than a couple drops of gasoline to create a long-lasting stink. If enough fuel drains from the float bowls, it’ll require a bit of cranking before there’s enough fuel in the bowls to start the engine. The only way to correct the gasket issue is to remove the carbs and replace the gaskets, though at 100,000 km and 16 years, a full carb overhaul is probably in order. The petcock (auto fuel valve) isn’t likely to be involved, unless it’s leaking at the diaphragm or hose fittings, and other hose fittings between the tank, fuel filter and valve, and carburetors should be inspected for seepage. There are also a few vacuum hoses, specifically the small diameter hoses connecting the intake manifold throats, which are prone to becoming perforated and emitting a fuel smell after engine shutoff.

SE’s CB radio receives fine, but the transmit mode is broken. When we bought it used in 2009, I also bought and installed a J&M headset in our helmets. I assumed that the headset mic would be cabled into the CB radio’s transmit circuit through the J&M adapter cables. When I key the CB radio to talk by pushing down on the transmit lever on the end of the control cluster on the left handlebar, all I get is a loud audible-frequency feedback tone, not a high-pitched squeal, but more like a “middle-C.” The same tone is received by any nearby CB radio. (It’s as if the carrier is transmitting a tone, but no audio information is on the carrier.) It happens in the headset whether another CB radio is nearby or not, so I don’t think it’s an audio feedback loop between the two radios. The intercom and AM/FM features work as expected. I’ve checked the antenna cable continuity from the radio to the antenna, and it’s fine – not shorted or open. I’ve disassembled the antenna to look for problems in the antenna base and found none. It doesn’t look like previous owner(s) have attempted to “trim” the antenna by altering the length of the upper half. (I don’t have access to an SWR meter.) I guess my question boils down to whether you have suggestions and I should keep tinkering, or if the problem is internal to the CB itself (blown output transistors, etc.) and I should just box it up and ship it to Sierra Electronics for servicing. I’d hate to get it back and discover I still have the same problem. Thanks.

IGNITION attached to the CB, and with the audio set to come from the fairing speakers. If you hear the same tone, the issue is likely to be with the CB radio. But before sending it to Sierra, I’d suggest finding a way to borrow an SWR meter. That would tell you for sure whether you have an antenna-related issue. _____________________________ TPMS-SPECIFIC WHEELS ______________________________

I have a 2010 GL1800. How can the indicator light be disarmed so it ’s not on when a set of wheels that’s not equipped with the sending units are installed. As you know, the units are very pricey. I would like the luxury of having a fresh set of tires ready to put on before a long trip. Robert George Weaverville, North Carolina

A:

The service manual states to use TPMS-specific wheels only, so I’m not certain you could install the sensors in your nonTPMS wheels, even if you decided to buy them. Nor am I certain the nonTPMS wheels will mount correctly to your bike. Should you decide to forgo one luxury for another, either ignoring the light or covering it with a piece of electrical tape would seem to me to be the least hassle options. ______________________________ STRANGE NOISE ______________________________

I’ve been riding Wings since 1978 and your column has always been a tremendous source of helpful information for many years. I look forward to reading it in Wing World every month. master cylinder at my local dealership. Not sure if that has anything to do with the noise I’m hearing up front on my bike, but I just wanted you to be aware of it. My bike is my primary transportation, so I ride everyday. The noise I’m hearing up front usually happens on days when the temps outside are below 50 degrees. I’m hearing this noise at speeds above 40 mph, sometimes it’s constant, sometimes it’s intermittent. To me, it sounds just like the same noise a dry speedometer cable on a 1500 would make. I’m sure you’re familiar with that noise. As I said before, I’ve been riding Wings since ’78 but this ’05 is the very first 1800 I’ve owned, so I’m still learning about it. I’ve been told there is no speedometer cable on the 1800 because it’s all electronic now even though my bike has analog gauges. I rode 1500s for years and did experience dry speedo cables from time to time. The noise is very frustrating to me since I can’t seem to pinpoint where it’s coming from. Any ideas? A:

Yes, I’m familiar with that noise. Your ’05 has no speedo cable because the electronic speedometer reacts to voltage pulses from the vehicle speed sensor (VSS). It may be that you’re hearing slight scuffing of the front brake pads on one or both rotors, or a caliper bracket could be fouling on one of the rotors. This could be caused by incorrect installation of the front wheel/axle. Please inspect the installation instructions in the shop manual, paying attention to the clearance check between rotors and caliper brackets. _________________________________________________ XM RADIO RECEPTION ______________________________________________

Q:

I own a 2012 Level 3 and the issue I have relates to the reception of the XM satellite radio. I have been enjoying XM in my cars for years and am very disappointed with the reception on my Gold Wing. It is constantly cutting out even

if there is a hint of a tree or building in the area. I would like to know exactly where the XM satellite antenna is located and if I can relocate it to improve performance. Thanks in advance. Craig Goldstein Brooksville, Florida

A:

Both the XM and GPS antennas are centrally located on Meter Visor A, underneath Meter Visor B. Getting to them requires removal of the windshield garnish, the windshield and all related parts. Living as you do in The Flatlands, I can’t think of a place down there that would block XM signals other than tunnels, highway overpasses or when riding between tall buildings in a downtown area. If this complaint were legion among Wing owners, you might have a point about antenna location or orientation, but it’s not. Consider examining the wire connections of the antenna to harness (under the right side of the top shelter), the connection on the right side of the rear frame under the seat, and at the audio unit in the trunk. Also, check for installation of any metallic objects in the area of the center of the dash panel, and especially a chromed, metallic windshield garnish, as these items will seriously degrade reception. ________________________________________________ WINDSHIELD NOT FITTING ______________________________________________

Q:

I recently purchased the V-Stream windshield and am having trouble with getting it to fit on my 2008 GL1800. The trouble I’m having is with the front part of the fairing not mounting properly. A wide gap opens up on both sides just under the mirrors and there are two large gaps along the rubber edge where the windshield goes under the the fairing front piece. Any ideas on how to get this to fit properly? I contacted the manufacturer two weeks ago and have not received a response. I’d really like to use this shield and am concerned I will not be able to get my $206 back because I scratched the windshield on an area that wouldn’t be seen once mounted on the bike. Thanks. I suspec t you’re correc t that the windshield couldn’t be returned for a refund in damaged condition. Without a picture of your installation, I’d have to suspect that the pins of the garnish panel aren’t correctly seated in their respective rubber grommets. Also note that in the product instructions, an incorrect procedure is described. Figure #1 and accompanying instruction states that the garnish bracket is to be gently pried over the hex bolt, allowing removal of the hex bolt, washer, and rubber mount, but note that figure #1 of the instructions clearly shows the bolt already removed. Figure #2 should be figure #1 and vice versa. In fact, the bolt and mounting hardware should be outboard of that bracket and removed before the bracket can be lifted clear of the stud on the fairing stay. If the bracket were re-assembled as per the products printed instructions, with the bolt and hardware installed first and the bracket lifted over top of the hex bolt, “gaposis” would surely result. If the bracket hardware position isn’t the issue, I suggest you try contacting the manufacturer again, but contact by phone this time. Emails sometimes get lost or end up in spam folders. _____________________________ GL1100 FUEL LEAK ______________________________

Q:

I am rebuilding a 1983 GL1100 Gold Wing and have the motor and essentials back together. After trying to fire it up, I have a fuel leak in the carbs, which

IGNITION looks like it’s coming from #3. I am going to pull and inspect, but I’ve heard of guys “bench testing” where they supply pressure and fuel to the carbs while they’re out of the bike. How do you do this? Is there a product out there that does this specifically? It sure would make troubleshooting easier. Thanks in advance!

A:

You r f u e l l ea k i s l ike l y due to a stuck float, worn fuel inlet needle/seat or incorrect float level adjustment. Look carefully for grooves present on t he f loat adjus t ment tang which are caused by the clip on the needle. These can cause the f loat to hang in operation and cause f looding. If you suspect carb #3, remove the f loat bowl, and inspect those items. Supplying pressurized fuel to the carb assembly seems to me to be an unwise and possibly dangerous idea and would prove nothing more than the inspection suggested above.

_____________________________ TIRE PRESSURE CHANGES ______________________________

Q:

Here in Nor th Carolina, especially in spring and fall, we can have a 30- to almost 40-degree change in outside temperature during the day. If I check my tire pressure early in the morning in a (say) 45-degree garage, and return home in 80-degree temperatures, how much will this temperature difference make in my tire pressure? And should I allow for that change when filling my tires? My 2012 Level 3 Gold Wing in the winter will initially not show the TPMS light during the first 2 or 3 miles. Then the light will come on for 8 to 10 miles. Then will stay off. The dealer told me this was normal for winter temperatures. Any comment? Donald Walter Fayetteville, North Carolina

A:

Your dealer is correct. This is a “problem” we never knew we had until TPMS came along. It’s

WOR K BE NCH

actually a nonproblem, though it can be disconcerting. No, you shouldn’t try to second-guess Mother Nature. Regardless of ambient temperature, set the pressure when the tires haven’t been on the road for at least an hour, preferably first thing in the morning, but don’t try to compensate for daily variance. Tire pressures change about 1.5 psi for every 18 degrees change in ambient temperature. If they were set at an ambient temp of 80 degrees, then depending on the pressure set, they could actually be on the cusp of turning on the indicator in the morning after the temp drops significantly, then the light could well go out after a few miles as the tires warm. Your current daily variation of 35 degrees in ambient temps would result in no more than a 3 psi pressure variance. If the light coming on during the first few miles of riding creates a lot of angst for you, consider increasing your cold inflation pressures by one or two psi, but under no circumstances should you increase them above the Cold Inflation Pressure shown on the tires’ sidewalls. Naturally, should the low-pressure warning come on under any other circumstances, stop immediately to investigate.

SHOW ’EM THE WAY

GIVE MEMBERS A BIKE SHOW THEY WANT TO ENTER BY CLAUDE MITCHELL

O

hio attempted to tackle the bike show participation issue. A few years ago, we noticed that bike show participation was falling. The parking lot would be full of possible entrants worthy of bike show consideration; however, none of the owners cared or chose to enter the Bike Show. As a member of the District staff chosen to run the show, I could not understand why this was happening. So I did the most logical thing. I asked the membership. Why aren’t they entering the District Bike Shows? We proceeded to ask the following questions. 1. How many of you have ever entered a bike show? 2. If you have previously entered a bike show, why would you not enter now? 3. How many of you would list cleaning

032

as one of or the major reason that you would not enter a bike show? What I found was that, while quite a few wanted to participate in bike shows, no one wanted to spend all day detailing a motorcycle to the level needed to even attempt at winning a class in the event. The level of cleanliness expected on a bike to be judged is to say the least – extreme. Sure there are some people who enjoy putting in that much effort, but more often than not, most do not. We found that cleaning was the primary factor in why people did or do not participate in a bike show event. I can sympathize with their feelings. As a member of District staff, we plan numerous educational, riding and gaming events during the rally for the membership to enjoy. You cannot enjoy these events when you are on your knees for who knows how many hours cleaning and detailing a bike. There are

so many other things to do at a rally. The solution? Eliminate the cleaning requirement. Well, not eliminate it …. Our problem was howto not eliminate the cleaning requirement totally, but make it less of a burden to participate in and put the focus back on having “fun.” In an effort to encourage enough Members to enter the bike shows, we in Ohio, made the following changes to our bike show rules. First and foremost, the purpose of a bike show should be to have fun and to show off your ride in a friendly competition. These are the goals to which we strived to attain. Prior to the Bike Show staging and after all classifications are completed, the rally will hold an official “Bike Wash” event at a designated time and place. The purpose of this

“wash event” is for the entrant to demonstrate that he or she put some minimal effort into cleaning his or her bike. By doing this we put the emphasis back on the aesthetics of the bike itself and not how obsessively a person cleaned it. A Bike Show official will witness the washing and drying of any bike of a Member who chooses to participate. The Bike Show official will not judge the particular cleanliness of the bike, but will witness that the bike has actually been washed and dried. After the completion of the individual “Wash,” the Bike Show official will affix a special sticker on the bike near the Bike Show classification sticker. At judging, any bike that has this special “sticker” will receive 17 points for the cleanliness category of the judging. At that point, all

cleanliness judging will cease for that bike. Why do we award the 17 points? We only allow partial cleanliness credit so that those who enjoy or choose to detail their bike, can do so and strive for the extra credit (eight more points) allowed for doing so. Vehicles that were not in the wash event and/or do not have the appropriate sticker will be scored using the customary 0-25 point criteria. Attendance in or participation at the bike washing is not mandatory. What did we gain by doing this? 1. Fun! Since the bike wash is held at a designated time and location, all of the entrants were gathered in the same area. They were chatting, laughing and having fun while washing their bikes together. 2. Participation in our Bike Show Contest increased by about 10 percent the first year. The numbers are encouraging. However, the primary goal of having fun was met. Additionally, others who had not participated in the bike show saw the camaraderie and made statements to me that next year that they, too, might try entering the bike show. We in Ohio hope that this might help other Districts or Regions if they, too, find they are having the same issue with falling bike show participation. INSTALLING A BULLETHD BIKER PRO CAMERA BY GARY L. MACE

J

une 2015 while riding my almost new 2015 Gold Wing, a utility truck crossed into my lane and hit me head-on. It totaled my bike, but I escaped with survivable injuries thanks to my gear. The truck driver lied and said it was I who was in the wrong lane. This time I was fortunate an eyewitness saw the entire accident and confirmed my report. I realized if there is a next time, I might not be so lucky to have a witness and no way to prove that the other driver was lying. So I decided that I wanted a dashcam to record my travels. My criteria for this camera were: 1. It had to be fairly unintrusive. I did not want some bulky gadget in my field of view. 2. It had to be powered. I did not want anything I needed to change or charge batteries. 3. It had to come on automatically. I did not want to have to remember to start this or click that. 4. Needed to automatically loop. I did not want to have to dump a memory card when full. 5. It had to be a neat install. 6. Retrieving video had to be fairly easy. With this one, I can remove the microSD card and put into my phone or use the Wi-Fi feature to download to my phone. I find the Wi-Fi is easiest. But in a crash, I can simply grab the microSD card and take with me if need be. After searching the internet, I found there are a lot of fairly cheap options. But none fit all my criteria. Many hunting-style cameras would work but they were battery operated, which I was not OK with. I found this one called Biker Pro by BulletHD. It seemed to fit all my criteria. However, it appears to be very new and there are not many reviews on it. But for $169, I decided to take a chance on it. After installation and initial testing, I am happy with the device. It takes decent video and after you figure out the smartphone app, it is easy to set-up. The

only issue so far was it locked up a few times, but when I reported this to manufacturer, they sent me the current version of the mount and new camera cable and so far so good. Installing Biker Pro To install the kit to my 2015 Gold Wing, I needed to remove the following: seat, both side panels and upper right side control panel. First, I installed the dual USB power converter. This was fairly simple. Open the Gold Wing fuse box and use the two accessory screws to power the converter. I then routed the power converter to an out-of-the-way location under the seat area. Next, route the power cable from the seat area to the upper right control panel area. I used a stiff wire and taped the cable to it to fish under the top housing. Then I fished the USB camera cable from the top, right side control box area to come out under the fairing. Again, I used a stiff wire and taped the USB cable to it to fish it through. Be careful to route the wire so it doesn’t interfere with the forks. There is a little sub-frame in the center of the fairing. I routed the USB cable in front of that to help keep it clear of forks. I decided to cut a notch in my top control panel in order to route the power and camera wires from the controller to their locations. If you are not into cutting this notch, I suppose one could route the wires in the area between the fairing and forks. But I do not like this for two reasons. First, I do not like any wires in that area that could maybe hangup on forks causing me issues. Plus, it would be sloppy looking to me. I used a saw and utility knife to cut this notch. Then, I tucked the excess power cable and camera USB into the compartment, then re-installed the control cover routing the wires through the notch I made. I then placed the Biker Pro controller mount to the cover using the double-sided tape. Be sure where you mount that both wires will reach the controller! I then clicked the Biker Pro controller into the mount and connected the wires. Finally, mount the actual camera. I spent much time trying to find the best location that would be both out of my way plus also give a good picture. You can hook the cable to the camera and fire up the WiFi so that your smartphone acts as a monitor. That will help with camera placement. I opted to WINGWORLDMAG.COM

T H RO T T L E + HOW-T O place mine so it is not in my way at all. In my first installation, I used the camera mount as shipped. It is a nice mount and works great. However, I discovered a problem. The Gold Wing has a little over 4 inches of possible fork travel. Under normal conditions, the camera mounted such as I did would be fine. But, should I hit a major dip in road, it is possible the camera could have hit my fender. I really wanted to keep this location. So, I decided to perform surgery on the mount. Basically, I did away with the section that allows you rotate and swivel camera. I used only the part that the camera straps to and screwed that into the fairing. One could also use double-side tape. My final camera install gives ample of room for full fork travel. Adjusting the camera up and down is a bit trickier since the swivel is gone. I had to use some double-sided tape as sort of a wedge in the front to get the angle where I wanted it. Remember, this is only one of many possible installations. You may find elsewhere else you want to mount both the controller and camera. For example, one could put the controller in the left side storage compartment. I use mine for other stuff so that wasn’t an option. And some may prefer the camera in behind the windshield where it would be better protected and give a better ride video, showing the lean more. Additional help A sample video from this setup can be viewed at http://youtu.be/ND3T6rckMjc. More info on the product and several links to installation manuals and videos (what ships with the kit only shows the basics of how it installs) is located online here: www.bullethd.us/#!motorcyclevideo-camera-biker-pro/c1luz.

LEWIS AND CLARK ON TWO WHEELS BY JOHN MCINTYRE

G

ary Bornick and I threaded our 2008 Gold Wings along Washington State Highway 4 parallel to the Columbia River. We were close to where the river’s fresh-water mouth mixed with the vast Pacific Ocean brine. The estuary’s expanse drew our attention through the blur of red alder, cottonwood and Pacific yew. There on the gentle water, we could envision Corps of Discovery members pulling hard on their canoe paddles, their eyes fixed on the broadening river that reached to the Pacific Ocean that rolled before them. They were at the threshold of attaining their goal at last. The enjoyment and rush of our motorcycle trip shared in the thrill and sense of adventure experienced by Lewis and Clark and the Corps of Discovery. Our trek on two wheels and paved roads would prove almost effortless compared to the challenges they had to overcome. They endured many hardships as they passed through this rugged and unchar ted landscape over 200 years ago on flatboat, foot, canoe and horseback. We fully realized we were not in the same league as Lewis and Clark, but we could imagine the excitement they experienced viewing the varied terrain as we traveled close to parts of their original route. In planning the trip, we knew we needed at least 12 days. We needed three days on I-90 from Wisconsin

038

to western Montana and four days on the return trip on Interstate 80 from Winnemucca, Nevada, to our homes in southern Wisconsin. That left five days to tour the two-lane highways of western Montana, Idaho, Washington, Oregon and Nevada. Interstate travel days averaged 500 miles and touring days averaged 325 miles to be able to sightsee. Lewis and Clark officially started their trip on the Missouri River where it meets the Mississippi River in St. Louis. Gary and I started our journey in Wisconsin and crossed the Mississippi River at La Crosse. Lewis and Clark traveled a total of 28 months in their round trip journey, whereas we covered approximately the same distance in 12 days. Technology has changed also. Meriwether Lewis carried a thermometer, octant, sextant, spirit level, chronometer and a compass to record raw data and to chart and map this new land known only to Native Americans. Rivers, lakes, waterfalls, rolling hills and snowcapped mountains amazed their senses as they viewed them for the first time. Our technology included smartphones that supported real-time weather forecasts, a radar weather application that could follow storm fronts, satellite maps, instant communication and could answer any question we might have. I enjoyed my factory installed global positioning system (GPS) on my Gold Wing. GPS is

useful to find a motel at the end of the day. I had and Madison. They had now followed the Missouri River as all of our pre-booked motel stops entered into my far as they could. They had to seek another route GPS before we left home. Lewis and Clark had followed the Missouri River west. It was inspiring to see this sight (Three Forks) to its end at Three Forks in western Montana. We and imagine the explorers at this spot just over 200 crossed the Missouri River at Chamberlain, South years ago. We continued on to Butte, Montana, where we Dakota, and did not come across their path again until reaching western Montana. West of Billings, we spent the night. We left the interstate system and could see the snow-peaked Beartooth Mountains to worked our way south and west along Big Hole River, our south. The Absaroka Range adjoins the Beartooth east of the Pioneer Mountains. Threatening sky Range and is home to Big Sky, Montana, along the loomed ahead and ragged branch lightening flashed, Gallatin River. A road sign proclaimed, “Three Forks so we put on our rain gear. We skirted the main part of the Missouri.” These were the final three branches of the storm and only experienced a gentle, steady rain for about an hour. Chief Joseph Pass spiraled of the Missouri that Lewis and Clark explored. According to Stephen Ambrose, in his book us down from 7,251 feet to Highway 93 that took us Undaunted Courage, “From the cliff Lewis stood on, through the Bitterroot National Forest and paralleled the view today is still spectacular...aside from a few the Bitterroot Mountains. This is the path of Lewis modern highway intrusions, the overall scene is as it and Clark, although they entered the valley further was. There is a tremendous bowl, containing the linked valleys of the two rivers coming out of today’s Yellowstone Park to the south and east, and the valley of the river to the southwest...The rivers are crowded with fish and waterfowl; the banks are crowded with deer. The mountains surround the bowl in a nearly complete circle of up to a hundred miles in diameter and are just as Lewis saw them, lofty and snow-covered.” The three rivers are the Gallatin, Jefferson Gary Bornick and his 2008 Gold Wing by the Lochsa River in Idaho. THROTTLE + ROA D TRIPS south through Lemhi Pass. Snowcapped mountains were visible all along this stretch, but Bitterroot River Valley was built up and commercialized more than I had anticipated. We continued north and turned on U.S. Highway 12 through Lolo Pass. This was the route west through the Bitterroot Mountains and was built in 1962. In Undaunted Courage you can also learn about the interesting set of circumstances that led the Corps of Discovery to take Lolo Pass. We headed into the pass and saw the sheer, steep escarpments that the Corps of Discovery had to traverse on foot leading pack horses. We followed the Lochsa River, pushing alternately on the left and right handle bar Gary Bornick (front) and as we leaned the bikes article author John McIntyre. to port and starboard through the twists and turns. Immersed in this rhythm of reverie, we felt glorious. This par ticular stretch in Idaho, from Lolo Pass to Lewiston, is the most pristine and undeveloped stretch lef t of the entire Lewis and Clark Trail. Highway 12 ribbons through the narrow canyon between forest and unspoiled river. It is a great motorcycle route. Once we entered the Bitterroots at Lolo, we were swallowed by Douglas fir, larch and lodgepole pine and lost sight of the higher elevation’s snowcaps. Lolo National Forest showed us a wide and varied spectrum with 17 conifer and five hardwood tree species. Proximity to the Lochsa River af fords some remarkable natural views that reveal the river alternately from slow moving, glass smooth cyan-blue water to a rough display of rocks and boulders that create the white froth of swift rapids. Many times we could hear the river churning without seeing it. The quiet, well-engineered, opposable six-cylinder Gold Wing engines allowed us to absorb the audible treat of fast water. According to journals and historical accounts, Lewis and Clark crossed through the Bitterroot Mountains and finally reached safety and food, courtesy of the Nez Perce Indians. It was a 160mile trek in 11 days. They set out Sept. 5, 1805, and

040

after the first day, it snowed. Not just a few inches, but several feet of snow fell for days and days. This made the narrow, sheer vertical-flanked trail harder to see and more treacherous. They carried little food and found the steep terrain and dense undergrowth made hunting nearly impossible. They were cold and hungry, but once they entered the pass, they had little choice but to continue. They were compelled to shoot several horses for food. It was one of the great forced marches in American history. In contrast, Gary and I crossed the Bitterroots in July during a heat wave. The high temperature for the day was 92 degrees. We had water and energ y bar s, and made it to our destination in Lewiston, Idaho, well within a day’s ride. We checked into our downtown hotel, with a restaurant within walking distance. After riding all day, it feels good to park the bike and walk. Af ter a good meal, our ritual is to soak a wash rag (we carry our own) in warm water to clear the windshield and do a once over with Original Bike Spirits Spray Cleaner and Polish to keep the cycles looking sharp. Lewiston is at the confluence of the Clearwater and Snake Rivers. Paper and timber products and agriculture are economic mainstays in the area. Tourism is also a big part of the economy, and Lewiston is a start off point for adventurers going down Snake River to Hell’s Canyon Recreation Area, a popular destination for camping, hiking, fishing, hunting and water sports. When touring on a motorcycle, it would be easy to get sidetracked and go exploring. Our trip through Idaho along the Lochsa and Clearwater Rivers revealed a lush green, forested terrain. Lewiston was at the Washington state border and the topography, as we continued west, was radically different. Western Washington was arid with few or no trees and steep rolling hills. This was dry land wheat country. Some of the natural, sharp creases in the landforms were left untilled. As some of America’s

THROTTLE + ROA D TRIPS steepest cropland, special equipment is needed. We saw huge combines with hydraulic self-leveling capabilities, both side-to-side and front-to-back. Their super wide cutting heads were also self leveling and the machines would climb and descend the hills at 30-percent gradients. Miles and miles of wind-rippled wheat covered hills yielded to occasional f ields of corn as the landscape gradually leveled. Then a field of potatoes would appear. As we neared Yakima River Valley, the landscape took on more green. The top three crops in Washington are apples, wheat and potatoes. We broke away from the Columbia River east of Walla Walla and followed U.S. 12 because we wanted to wheel off the Lewis and Clark route to visit Mount Rainier National Park. A benefit for us being 62, is we got a National Parks Senior Pass for a fee of $10. The day from Lewiston to Chehalis, Washington, was a shorter day with only 380 miles plus the side trip to Mount Rainier National Park. We entered at the Stevens Canyon entrance and followed the twisting road through hairpins flanked by tall white pine, Frazier fir and laurel. We continued to thread our way up in elevation and caught fleeting glimpses of the white domed monolith in front of us through the trees. The 47 extra miles through the park was taking us much longer than planned because of sharp curves and traffic. The temperature reached 94 degrees as the Northwest regional heat wave continued. Our watercooled GL1800s took the heat in stride. The cooling fan spun from time to time but the temperature gauge always held in the safe range. Having confidence in your machine means a lot when you are a long way from home. We drank water and hydrated regularly at pull-out stops where we enjoyed spectacular scenery. It seemed ironic for it to be so warm when we gazed at the southwest face of the mountain that featured the Cowlitz, Paradise, Nisqually and Wilson Glaciers. The Reflection Lakes looked cool and refreshing, as did Paradise River. We crossed Paradise Valley and followed the river closely to where it joined the Nisqually River near the park exit. We wound our way back to U.S. 12 and picked up Interstate 5 to Chehalis, Washington. It was a Tuesday and we intentionally planned to miss heavier weekend traffic when we visited the park. The next morning, we headed south on I-5 and picked up State Highway 4 that followed the north bank of the Columbia River. This was the final leg

Gary and John (and John’s Wing) alongside the Pacific Coast Highway in Oregon.

of the explorers’ westward adventure. Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center and Cape Disappointment were at the end of the road at the Pacific Ocean. We backtracked a few miles and crossed the river on Astoria Bridge into Oregon. Our next stop, just south of Astoria, was Fort Clatsop, where the Corps of Discovery wintered from December 1805 to March 1806. After reaching the Pacific Ocean, they had to decide if they would return immediately or wait until spring. They decided to wait until spring because of the difficult crossing of the Bitterroot Mountains. Fort Clatsop is part of the Lewis and Clark National and Historic Parks and home to a replica of the original fort, as well as a museum. We left Lewis and Clark behind and toured south on the Pacific Coast Highway, Highway 101. Oregon would be the last state to complete my bucket list of being in all 50 states. The end of our trip was nearing with just two more days of touring, including a visit to Crater Lake National Park, before we entered Nevada, and picked up Interstate 80 in Winnemucca. Gary and I covered 5,000 miles in 12 days in what proved to be a stimulating accomplishment. Lewis and Clark had traveled round trip from St. Louis in two years, four months. Their journey was more arduous and their goals were different. They did not find a northwest water passage, but charted and mapped a previously unknown frontier, befriended Native Americans, and recorded 178 new plants species and 122 new animal species. The only real discovery Gary and I made was finding a greater appreciation of their amazing quest.

SENA 10S

MOTORCYCLE BLUETOOTH COMMUNICATIONS SYSTEM DON’T JUST SHARE A RIDE – SHARE THE MOMENTS BY KEVIN GREENWALD

S

ince personal communication devices evolve at warp speed, someone needs to lead the way with motorcycle com units that embrace the technology we are accustomed to using. If riding in silence is your preference, enjoy. But if that’s not your modus operandi, and your helmet is a more integrated component of your Gold Wing experience, consider what Sena engineers in San Jose, California, have tinkered together. Their latest model, the 10S, offers a wide variety of possibilities inside the helmet: rider to co-rider intercom, sharing music from independent sources, FM radio presets, pairing with three other bikes, etc. It’s also a Bluetooth (v 4.1) system with a 1-mile line-of-sight range, water resistant for use in all but frog-choking rain, a slimmer profile than the industry-workhorse Sena SMH10, and even hard-wire ports and cables for non-Bluetooth MP3 players or earbuds. It keeps

044

you connected to your world on multiple levels of choice and can even interface with a Hero GoPro, recording commentary from your helmet mic onto the camera’s media as you film – narrate a special ride as it’s happening! While many of these choices could be found piecemeal in older Sena siblings or competitive products, the 10S brings this entire suite of practical features to the table. For example, the intercom system is now universal – your helmet will pair not only with other Sena coms, but other brands as well. Riding buddies or new friends you meet aren’t reduced to hand gestures in group-ride scenarios. Phone enthusiasts can sync their Android or iPhone and never miss an important call. I liked that the mics and ear-speakers are now modular, allowing for individual components to be replaced without mothballing the entire system should a malfunction (albeit, rare) occur. You can even use the included 12-volt cigarette plug

to actively charge the unit while wearing the helmet and motoring down the highway. As always, you can also recharge via any USB port or AC adaptor (power connector included). The 10S Dual Set I received from Sena came with both headsets already paired from the factory – no syncing procedure required. It also included both boom mics and wired mics, so no hassles regardless of owning a full-face helmet, modular or three-quarter lid – this kit will work with any of them. Installation was quick (approximately 25 minutes if new at this sort of thing; less time if not your first “helmetcom rodeo”). The abbreviated owners manual is fairly detailed, but a deluxe-version (57 pages) is available online, as well as firmware updates. I’d advise downloading the PDF for the helpful detail it provides. The “Quick Reference” guide from the box is worth laminating and tossing in your trunk for rapid problem-solving away from home. There’s even a free Sena app for your smartphone to remotely manage your device via Bluetooth! Riding wide open in the breezes of a Wisconsin spring, sound clarity for both rider-to-passenger, rider to another rider 40 yards distance, and any one of the FM presets was typical Sena – more than adequate for these aging eardrums (roughed up a bit from years of workplace noise pollution). Units come with Advanced Noise Control, a feature that will wow you, unless like me, you’re already spoiled from quality sound typical of previously owned Sena products. You can dialout the “echoing” (aka “side tone”) and “tinny-ness” that subpar brands can produce (see page 42 of the owners manual), and the rotating “toggle” is easily

manipulated with gloved hands. FM reception was clear, but since I tend to put on mega-miles quickly in a day of touring, I frequently outrun local radio station reception, so multiple presets are not that big a deal for me. If they are your cup of tea, program in all your favorites. Contact Sena at www.sena.com or inquire at your local motorcycle retailer or preferred Internet source for more information and competitive pricing. PROS: Latest technology, modular components and reliable quality (two-year warranty), along with nearly all-weather operation. Interfaces with GPS, smartphones, video cameras, other com units, MP3s – very techfriendly with anything that uses Bluetooth as an avenue of inter-device communication. CONS: Ten FM presets? Really? And though wiring seems beefier than ever, I’d still like a heavier gauge (read: “less fragile”) in future com products. Also, bite the “ink-and-paper” bullet and download the full owners manual – you’ll appreciate the detailed “hand-holding” as you customize the system to your preferences. FINAL CALL: If considering a durable, high-quality com system that should remain current for quite some time, Sena has a proven track record, and the 10S (MSRP $239 for a single unit, $439 for dual helmet set) is another welcomed member in a respected family of top-shelf communication products. Easy to install, simple to use and clear communication – it’s what I demand of a helmet com system, and Sena’s 10S delivered. Kevin Greenwald, GWRRA #361468, lives in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. Motorcycle cleaning tips and tricks We asked Gold Wing Road Rider Association Members to give suggestions, tips and tricks to clean and shine a motorcycle based on their experience cleaning and shining their Wing. Carolyn Tice of Texas and Gary Brown of Arizona swear by Meguiar’s products. Brown says it “goes on like water and you can use it on everything but tires. It leaves almost a wax finish.” Tice uses one for body and one for the chrome. Brown explains, “It can shine most surfaces in five minutes if it’s not really dirty.” Tice instructs, “Don’t let the dirt get layered up – clean it often. Take your time, use a soft cloth and don’t be stingy on the wax or spray. And, don’t forget to clean underneath.” Perhaps you wash your bike every day such as John McIntyre who wrote this month’s Road Trip article, “Lewis and Clark on Two Wheels.” He uses Original Bike Spirits Spray Cleaner and Polish. It polishes paint and chrome and doesn’t require water to use it. Tice agrees. She uses the cleaner and polish for in between waxing. Tice also uses Novus Plastic Polish for scratches. “Even deep ones,” she adds. “It works wonders.” Allen Dickens washes and rinses, then uses a good name brand wet wax. Charles Bailey Sr. from Texas likes the Honda Polish and Cleaner in the can. He instructs to “wash, dry, then use polish cleaner on everything or Carnauba Wax on painted surfaces.” Richard Artmayer of Kentucky and two other Members use Turtlewax Ice Liquid Wax. One Member says not to use it on your seat, grips or foot pegs though or they will be slippery. Artmayer’s tip to clean a motorcycle is using a shop vac to blow away the water after washing it. Jim Gray only uses 410 on his windscreen. He states that, “This has kept it pristine for several years,” adding “It is important to follow the instructions on how to clean the windscreen.” Another Member uses Cycle Care Formula 33 and a soft, clean cloth, cleaning frequently. Garage were other mentioned brands. Bob Scott from Michigan suggests Hondaline Spray Cleaner. “There are some generic brands out there that are pretty much the same but I feel the Honda product buffs off easier and can clean everything from the windshield to the exhaust and wheels.” Another Member offered the suggestion to start at the windscreen and work down, while still another suggests treating yourself every once and awhile and hiring a company that comes to your location to detail your bike. Go with one that brings iodized water with them for a spot-free rinse, and for $100-$200 you’ll have a clean, shiny bike that you can maintain from there.

What else is out there?

Now add some farkle Now that your bike is sparkling clean, it is time to add some new farkle. Perhaps you’ve been looking for some lights that illuminate a certain feature on your bike while also alerting others to your presence on the road or maneuvers you are about to make. Here is just a minute sampling of different accessories. Kuryakyn has a ( 1 ) LED Rear Reflector Conversion that lights up the night replacing the stock red reflector found on the center panel of GL1800 and F6B models. The rear reflector functions as a running and brake light for increased visibility from the rear. Add a Kuryakyn Rear Accessory Harness (part #3230 for GL1800, #3234 for F6B) for hassle-free plug-and-play installation. Search for part #7356. It costs $49.99-$59.99. Add On Accessories ( 2 ) Chrome ABS LED Lighted Fork Covers fit all GL1800 and F6B bikes. The design follows the lines of the bike and each amber light has 15 LEDs to provide extra lighting to the front and side of the bike. The covers are sold in pairs and are direct replacements. They are also available unlighted. Ask for part 45-1293L for lighted and 45-1293 unlighted. MSRP is $207.95 and $165.95. With a retail price of $99, the ( 3 ) Sena Wristband Remote features world-class 4.1 Bluetooth technology for clear, crisp and reliable communication and can be paired with any Sena Bluetooth 4.0 and above Smart Ready-enabled headsets such as the revolutionary 20S, sleek and stealth 10U, 10R and 10C, the world’s first combined communication and audio action camera system. The Wristband Remote is also waterresistant and offers glove-friendly buttons and joystick for easy-to-use operation. With long-lasting battery life, the device can be used for up to three months between charges. A simple and classy way to get some additional side lighting on your bike, the ( 4 ) Roundel Logo LED Illumination Kit by Electrical Connection and available at wingstuff.com functions as both a running light and a turn signal with included circuitry. Twenty-four SMD LEDs create white light as a running light, then automatically switch to amber and flash in sync with the OEM turn signals. The kit includes Surface Prep and Posi-Tap connectors. MSRP is $44.95. Also check out the new ( 5 ) Rear Seat Wind Spoiler from Wind Wings. It takes about 15 minutes to install and engraving is available. This rear seat wind spoiler costs $120.

FROM ITALY TO WING DING 37 BY MAURIZIO AND NUNZIA OLDANI

I

have to thank Dan and Rachel Sanderovich and our Chapter Director Sandrone Boveri for giving us the opportunity to experience a wonderful adventure – Wing Ding 37! Since 1991 and seeing photos in Wing World magazine, Nunzia and I have wanted to attend. That time arrived in 2015. It began when Dan and Rachel visited our store, Wingstore. They wanted to ship goods to Israel where they live. One thing led to another and Dan asked, “Do you know GWRRA, the most important Gold Wing club in the world?” I took my wallet out and showed him my membership card. When he read, “Life Member,” he was thrilled. After a few days, we met him again at the IT-A Chapter Christmas party. He said, “You and Nunzia must be the Overseas Couple of the Year.” We looked at each other and replied. “OK,” not knowing what to expect. You must first pass a sort of test where a committee assesses couples based on questions, photos and personal accounts. After a couple of months, we received an email from Dan congratulating us on being selected Overseas Couple of the Year (OCOY). We were very excited! He explained briefly what to do as OCOY. Luckily I had already planned to spend our well-deserved vacation in the U.S. with our children. To get all the details, we corresponded with Assistant Directors of Membership Enhancement at the time, Tommy and Gayle Wilson.

Maurizio and Nunzia Oldani get their photo taken before the Wing Ding 37 Couple of the Year contest.

Tuesday, Sept. 2 We meet a few GWRRA Members in the hotel lobby. A couple of hours later we departed for the Von Braun Center where the rally was held. There were interviews, lunch and dinner. After dinner, we went back to the hotel for

a gift exchange! In the dozens of emails we received prior to the event, we were informed of a gift exchange with nine other couples. So, in addition to our luggage, we had our 1500 trunk bag, full of gifts representing Italy. Nunzia was happy to give gifts, but she had not calculated that we would receive gifts from the other couples. We refilled the bag and had to buy another. After the gift exchange, Gayle pulled out nine boxes and each couple chose one. Inside there were numbers of the order that couples would appear on stage. We hadn’t gotten a number. We thought that was good – we didn’t need to talk. Instead, there was no number because we were to be the first to talk!

Wednesday, Sept. 3 We met in the lobby at 7 a.m. We were in jeans, white polos and leather vests. The other couples were straight out of a fashion studio – same shoes or boots, same pants, same belt, same belt buckle, same shirt, same vest, patch and pins placed in the same spot. At the Von Braun Center, we didn’t get interviewed but watched the other couples interviewed by various Region Directors. Backstage, we saw the other couples’ tension increase. I glanced from behind the curtain and saw a full theater. Dan led Nunzia by the arm onstage and Rachel did the same with me, where we were briefly introduced. We were then awarded a blue ribbon medal that we carried for the duration of the event. We hoped we had dodged making a speech but instead we were left alone to speak. I started with “Buon giorno, qualcuno di voi conosce l’italiano?” Then Nunzia told a joke we had prepared. We got three standing ovations.

Thursday, Sept. 4 The first official day of the rally, at the opening ceremony, Life Members were asked to stand. Nunzia and I got up. Looking around, we discovered there were few standing, not more than 20 people. Later, we had free time, then a Couple of the Year Reunion luncheon where we were invited to introduce ourselves. Nunzia gave a speech of thanks, which prompted another standing ovation and a thumbs up from Benny, the husband of one of the GWRRA founders. After a free afternoon, we went to the Space Center. We took a walk outdoors after dinner. At some point, we smelled burnt plastic. Eight fire trucks, a couple ambulances and a few police cars responded. The next day, we found out it was a small fire and everything was resolved in a few minutes. Friday, Sept. 5 Friday was a free day, though we were at the Von Braun Center until about noon. Then we took the children shopping at Abercrombie for my daughter, Rebecca, and then to a motocross track for Ricky. Back at the hotel for an appointment with Joseph Corso, a friend from Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, Tommy reminded, “Maurizio, tomorrow, the Grand Parade begins at 8:30 a.m. and you have to open the parade.” I said, “Tommy, remember that I am here without my motorcycle.” “No problem,” he said, picking up the phone to find a motorcycle. Joseph heard everything that was said and offered the use of his bike.

Saturday, Sept. 6 By 6:10 a.m. the next morning, we ate breakfast and got to the parade spot, where there was already a television crew and a number of police cars. Joseph came with his bike. There were Gold Wings as far as the eye could see behind us, in three columns perfectly aligned. At a meeting of all the drivers leading the parade, recommendations were given, such as not to use the CB radio unless there was an emergency. The police escorted the parade, with GWRRA Founders and Directors carrying an American flag. We were next in line. It was very emotional for us. The parade lasted about 30 minutes. It was almost unreal – the perfect order, no one played their radio, all were on the ball, all wore a helmet, and viewers were sitting by the side of the road to greet us. After, we saw the Drill Teams, then attended the Overseas Lunch. Present were Dan and Rachel Sanderovich, GWRRA President and staff. There are also some foreigners – a nice group of French led by Macke motorcycle and a small group of Swiss, some from Denmark and Germany, a couple from Scotland, and a couple from Australia. A few of them had already heard of Wingstore. Couples of the Year Dinner was next. Then, we were given a bucket, apron and roll of 50/50 tickets to sell. In no time at all, we collected $800. Eventually, GWRRA gave over $6,000 to charity. We enjoyed dinner and entertainment. I made everyone laugh as I explained that in Italy, if you were to hold a parade at 8:30 a.m. on a Saturday morning in residential neighborhoods, instead of applause and greetings, there would be an endless string of not so lovely words! The next day we had to fly home.

Deputy Director Bruce Beeman explains details on the medal to the couple.

Sunday, Sept. 7 After breakfast while loading the van, a man asked if we would take a photo next to his Gold Wing. It made me emotional. After two flights and many hours, we got home, and relaxed and recovered from jet lag. Then it was back to work. After downloading a few hundred email messages, I logged into Facebook and found a host of friend requests from people we met or in some cases only saw at Wing Ding. In addition, we saw a number of posts where we were thanked for our visit. One example: “When you come back to the United States, please let us know when and where you will be, we would like to meet you again. You both are great people and Cheri and I are proud to call you our friends, Don Walloch.” It’s hard to describe such an experience and don’t know if we managed to convey all the emotion we felt. Thanks to this great family, GWRRA! We have met wonderful people of all ages. Many of them told us, “Now we have a reason to come to Italy.” Maurizio and Nunzia Oldani, GWRRA #71185 and 20152016 Overseas Couple of the Year, live in Italy.

READERS’ RIDES

My buddy Mark and me doing a run through Deals Gap in Tennessee. p

p ALAN REID, GWRRA #173664 2001 GL1800A WATERLOO, ONTARIO

A GWRRA Member since 2003, I live in Waterloo, Ontario, and have been riding for over 40 years, starting with dirt bikes. I took my first ride on a brand new 1977 Gold Wing and fell in love! My first street bike was a Kawi KZ350 (Mom didn’t know about that one), then a CB750K. A long road trip and a hurricane while riding the CB750 in 1986, told me that I was ready for my first Gold Wing. I bought a 1985 GL1200 Interstate at 27 years old, then a 1995 1500SE, then my latest beauty, a 2001 GL1800A purchased from a fellow GWRRA Member in the summer of 2006. I haven’t looked back since. She is truly the other lady in my life (and my wife is OK with that). Even at almost 16 years old, I get regular compliments and the color is simply stunning (Pearl Apollo Blue). I do all of my own maintenance and repairs, and love her so much. I don’t think I will ever sell her! I hope to ride another 20 years, and who knows … this one might still be my daily ride in 2036!

PASSENGER STORAGE COMPARTMENTS ROADSMITH WWW.ROADSMITH.COM One of the coolest new accessories we have to offer this year are the Passenger Storage Compartments. These versatile compartments not only give the passenger a full complement of pockets and a drink holder, they also serve the very practical purpose of protecting your paint finish. The left side compartment has a Velcro release which provides easy access to the auxiliary fuel cap. Item number is 1247L 12-47R, Manufacturer’s number 12-47L 12-47R. Cost is $169 for a pair.

SADDLEBAGS FOR INSTATRIKE AND MINITRIKE TOW-PAC WWW.TOWPACUSA.COM These hard plastic bags mount directly to your InstaTrike or MiniTrike frame and fit most models. Saddlebags are lockable and provide that extra space you were looking for on each side of the passenger seat above your fenders. If you’d like more information or price quotes, visit www.towpacusa. com/product/saddlebags and click on “request more info.”

MY WHEEL-LESS TRAILER

BY ASA ROUSE

I

especially enjoyed the motorcycle cargo trailer article and photos in the April 2016 edition of Wing World. However, I did notice the article’s omission of the Tag A Long wheelless motorcycle trailer. I looked into the Tag A Long trailer that has no wheels, and concluded that its carrying capacity was perfect for my needs, liked that backing up would pose no problem and bought one for a fraction of the price of a wheeled trailer. Two of my talented, close buds put the Tag A Long together for me, incorporating the Gold Wing’s saddlebags from the trike conversion, and I had all the carrying capacity I needed. I have ridden for over 50 years and am a GWRRA Master Tour Rider. My wife, Libby, and I have ridden in all 50 states, in 8 of the 10 Canadian provinces and have camped in most

of them. At age 80, I had my 1800 Gold Wing “Skylark” triked. Smart decision. At age 81, I decided that although I loved camping almost as much as riding, motels made things much simpler for the long distance riding I love. Motel visits eliminated the need to pull my, at least 25 year old, faithful homemade cargo trailer. That rustic cargo trailer that my dear friend, the late Don Stephens, made for me looks like it’s government issued, but it is a dandy bike trailer. One of the places I took it was a six-week adventure to Alaska from Kentucky and back with two other buds in the summer of 2003. After we got to that 49th state, we spent two weeks riding in it and trust me, that’s the way to see and to enjoy that gorgeous state. Upon my return Aug. 3, 2003, the odometer on my 1500 “Traveler” (named after General Robert E. Lee’s favorite horse) showed that the Alaska adventure-of-a-lifetime consumed 11,489 miles total. I must say that I have no connection with the makers of Tag A Long trailers. I happily compliment Tag A Longs because I like mine so much. The author in 2003 and the back of his homemade trailer.

NORTH EAST TRIKES

BROTHERS BUILDING A BUSINESS FROM REAL-LIFE SOLUTIONS BY ANITA STIENSTRA

I

t all began in 2006 when Bobby Guglielmo decided to trike his bike after back troubles made him concerned he might drop the bike with his wife on it. Having worked in the auto-body business for years, Guglielmo wasn’t satisfied with parts of the trike install, even though the manufacturer helped him as much as possible. Guglielmo ended up taking his trike apart and rebuilding the entire thing. Triking bikes became a passion after that. He built a couple more. While riding his new trike, brother Richard saw “how cool” it was, and the pair built a trike from Richard’s Honda Valkyrie. Oldest brother and businessman, Anthony, who hadn’t ridden in years, then came on board. The three brothers began riding together on their trikes and participated in Bike Night at their local Suzy Q’s every Tuesday. When other bikers

realized the brothers were a wealth of information, after rides the trio was bombarded with trike questions and requests for trike builds. Word spread and folks even came knocking at their Rhode Island homes. The requests pushed the knowledgeable and capable brothers into business in 2010 – and North East Trikes was born. As Bobby Guglielmo explains, “Building trikes is challenging and fun.” He adds jokingly, “We kind of enjoy it.” They enjoy it enough to work on nights and weekends after a full week of work. Unfortunately, Anthony died in 2014, but Bobby and Richard continue to put in the hours past their 40 hours on their day jobs. Business continues to grow. North East Trikes applies experience to perfectionism.

Bobby admits he’s a “picky person,” who further states that Richard is as “picky, if not more” than he. “We are particular about what we do. We live what we preach. If I’m not going to do it with my bike, I’m not going to do it with yours.” Bobby continues, “If I see something I don’t like, I make it better than it needed to be.” Seventy percent of their work is on Gold Wings though they work on any motorcycle and install any manufacturer’s trike kit. They’ve moved from a small shop in part of Bobby’s house to a new 1800 square foot shop. The pair remodeled Richard’s 146 horse powered Triumph Rocket. The two brothers are a lot like Gold Wing Road Rider Association Members – They own multiple types of bikes. Bobby explains that he’s ridden every

They discovered the kit at Americade and choose it based on “its unique styling and versatility.” “It has a removable tour pack, alternate rear cover, and removable side skirts, so you can change its appearance in minutes, depending on your preference. I was looking for something different from the rest, so we had Eagle Eye Paint apply some realistic flames.” The trike also features chrome wheels, auxiliary 4-gallon gas tank (10 gallon total), Rockford Fosgate amp and speakers, Rinehart mufflers with custom-made tips and Champion reverse gear. The brothers’ work ethics are becoming legend. Who wouldn’t want your bike triked by perfectionists who “won’t let the trike out the door” if “it’s not OK”?

ide your motorcycle to work on Monday, June 20, 2016 to demonstrate how many motorcyclists there are, that motorcyclists come from all walks of life, that motorcycles reduce traffic congestion, and that motorcycles are for transportation as well as recreation. Started in 1992 as a national ride day, the nonprofit Ride to Work was formed in 2002. See ridetowork.org for more info. Â

MOTORCYCLE TRANSPORTATION FACT SHEET NUMBER OF MOTORCYCLES COMMUTING Out of a total 129,141,982 commuters in this country (USA, 2003) 147,703 of them ride motorcycles to work regularly. That’s only .11 percent. US Census Bureau Of all the motorcycles registered in the USA, (6,567,197) 4.3% of them are used for year-round primary transportation (282,389), with an additional 9.9% used seasonally for this purpose (932,542 total). Motorcycle Industry Council

NUMBER OF MOTORCYCLES ON THE ROAD As of 2003, there were 5,370,000 motorcycles regularly in use in the United States. US Department of Transportation, Bureau of Transportation Statistics As of 2003, these 5,370,000 motorcycles traveled an average of 1,800 miles a year per motorcycle (9,539,000,000 total miles). US Department of Transportation, Bureau of Transportation Statistics

TRAFFIC CONGESTION The average roadway delay per person in 2001 was 26 hours per year and in 2003 it was 47 hours per year, an increase of 81%. The average commute time one way is 25 minutes. Texas Transportation Institute

JOURNEY TIMES The average United States driver travels 29 miles per day and is driving a total of 55 minutes per day. (This is an average vehicle speed of 32 mph.) US Department of Transportation, Bureau of Transportation Statistics Tests comparing car and motorcycle performance on real journeys suggest that traveling by motorcycle can shorten journey times by as much as 33 minutes of every hour for town centre and city travel, and 20 minutes of every hour for travel through a mixture of built-up and non built-up areas. Motorcycle Industry Association (UK)

POTENTIAL AGGREGATE BENEFIT Motorcycles cover 1-2% of the total distance traveled by road, and cars cover 86%. If 2% of car commuters switched to motorcycles or scooters, the current level of motorcycle utility use would effectively double. Motorcycle Industry Association (UK) Average 2002 annual household private vehicle expense is $7,371. This is divided into $3,665 for vehicle purchases, $1,235 for gas and oil and $2,471 for insurance and misc. US Department of Labor Statistics, Consumer Expenditure Survey WINGWORLDMAG.COM
