That person is Mike Hildebrand – no, there is no relation that we know. Mike had restored an early Gold Wing when he was living in Kansas, and now that he has moved to Arizona, well, he st nee e a new ro e t. With a little n ge Mike volunteered! NEW BIKE, NEW FEATURES! By now you know the big news: In October, Honda’s new 2018 Gold Wing broke cover. All new from front to rear, in typical Honda fashion the closer you look at this motorcycle, the more there is to appreciate. Over the next few months, we’ll be focusing on some of the highlights and going into them in detail. And there’s one logical place to start: right at the front, with the Gold Wing’s radical new front suspension.
The Gold Wing’s new suspension employs an innovative twin A-arm strut. In this design, the A-arms attach to the frame structure and remain fixed left-to-right, only controlling the suspension’s vertical stroke. They link the frame to a steering pivot further forward, and the twin-legged beam pivots left and right through this. The whole system is far more akin to a Formula 1 car’s steering with the wheel turned 90 degrees than an older motorcycle design. A single damper with a coil-over spring controls the suspension action.

While the front suspension is easy to see, many of the other Gold Wing changes aren’t. One of those is how the rider and passenger sit on this motorcycle. Honda engineers wanted to move them closer to the front wheel for a more connected feeling with the road. That meant moving the engine further forward as well. But there’s a limit here — move any motorcycle engine far enough to the front and the front wheel makes contact as the front suspension compresses. Actually, the wheel usually makes contact with the radiator first, but the new Gold Wing has already taken care of that by mounting the radiators in the sides of the fairing, a solution Honda’s used for years on bikes like the VTR1000F Super Hawk, the Interceptor and the priorgeneration Gold Wing. Since the Gold Wing’s new front suspension moves the wheel through a more vertical arc between full extension and full compression, the engine, rider and passenger can all move closer too.

meaning the female portion of the fork, the slider, attaches to the wheel, while the triple-clamps grip the fork tubes or stanchions. (In an “upside down” fork like the CBR1000RR’s, that’s reversed.) By far, the vast majority of today’s streetbikes and dirtbikes use one of these two telescopic-fork setups. So why change with the new Gold Wing?
There are other significant benefits as well. First, there’s the reduction in shock transmitted to the handlebars. And you can also forget about fork stiction. Finally, the new Gold Wing offers a 40 percent reduction in steered mass. That enhances low-speed handling and lowers steering effort. Anita Alkire: Taking GWRRA into the 21st century By Anita Stienstra
A
t the age of 7, GWRRA President Anita Alkire told her mother she wanted to be a teacher. Her mother and father had always instilled in her that whatever you want to accomplish you could. The leadership role stuck with her thro gho t life. ho gh her in en e on others didn’t take place in the traditional classroom setting, where you teach a set number of children a year for 30 years or so, her reach has extended even further. Instead of 1,000 potential students, she has trained and mentored hundreds of thousands in her real estate business and GWRRA. Besides having a calling for teaching, Alkire discovered that her business and leadership skills from the company she started, ERA American Spirit Realty, could be applied to an organization

she was falling in love with. That organization was GWRRA. Her husband, JR, was out riding one day in 1999 when he had a chance encounter with GWRRA Members. They invited the Gold Wing owners to a dinner ride meeting. Alkire says the Members were “incredibly welcoming” and this was an opportunity for the young couple to combine their love of motorcycling with new friends. They were both so busy with their careers – she growing her business and JR working for the School of Music and Dance at San Diego State University – that this was a welcome development. l ire o es a o t how ring this first W meeting, they became dinner ride coordinators. They put 5,800 miles on during one trip to see the U.S. Like so many other Gold Wingers at the time, they visited national parks and camped and wouldn’t trade it for the world. For 16 years before becoming GWRRA Members, the couple took to the open road “for wind therapy,” as l ire lo es to all it first on a a aha irago 920, the 1200 and two other Wings – a 1991 and 1997. GWRRA was now their opportunity to share the ride with like-minded Gold Wingers. While Alkire’s company thrived and won awards, such as the top 100 ERA franchise, Anita too was thriving in GWRRA. She was leading Members as Assistant Chapter Director, then Director of CA1F and was recruiting new Members, too. Her s o e of in en e wi ene as ssistant alifornia
District Director and Director, and then as Region F Director of seven southwestern states. When she became Region F and I Deputy Director, covering 11 western states, she was training others, multiplying that reach exponentially and internationally. During this time while her GWRRA family was growing, her family at home was also. JR and she became parents of a daughter, Bobbie, who grew up in GWRRA. She went on to marry Gold Winger Jeremy Woo, who also grew up in GWRRA. The Woos became parents and the Alkires, grandparents. Like true GWRRA Members, family was included in the fun. Family grew, and the Alkires grew with the Gold Wing. The pair purchased and rode a 2000 and then a 2007. Then in 2010, Alkire bought her own 2001 Wing and put on a 2010 Champion Sidecar trike kit. She explains, “I wasn’t comfortable at my height and inseam to be on a two wheeler. Straddling the bike I was only on the balls of my feet or on tip-toes and that’s not safe.” She has since put 52,000 miles on it with a 6,000-mile trip to Yellowstone and the journey with several couples to Billings in 2016. Eventually Alkire’s company became so successful that someone else wanted to purchase it. Alkire could have relaxed a bit, but instead started two other businesses, The Real Estate Shoppe and The TC Shoppe. In GWRRA, Anita was gaining a reputation for being forthcoming with thoughts, suggestions and ideas in regards to the fiel an W . ring her an s ti e as Deputy Directors, the couple also made more and more trips to Phoenix to meet with leadership. Alkire’s passion to lead and teach others brought her to the doorstep of the presidency in 2015. A week after retiring from 38 years in real estate with plans to tour on the motorcycle more, Alkire received an email from Founder Paul Hildebrand and wife Dottie. It invited JR and her to Phoenix in July for “a private conversation.” Alkire says, “I was a bit nervous, what could they want? We didn’t know Paul and Dottie that well.” So in July, the Alkires set out for Phoenix from their home in La Mesa. “It was a long six-hour ri e tr ing to fig re o t what the a l an Dottie] wanted to talk to me about,” laughs Alkire. After conversation and dinner, the Hildebrands told Alkire they would like her to be president of GWRRA. Alkire says about the complete surprise, “The only thing that came out of my mouth was, ‘What?’” Then after they repeated the question, she could only speak, “Wow.” She reminded them

they didn’t always see eye to eye on everything. Alkire explains, “They said that was one of the reasons they thought it would be a good match.” Besides her business acumen, an important aspect that Alkire brought to the table was that she ha een in the fiel for so an ears. s the association had grown in those decades, the o nities of ol nteer offi ers an chapters across the world began running their own microcosms of GWRRA. As membership waned, there were hopes of leadership from o e ffi e that wo l foster growth. he o e ffi e wel o e a strong lea er who ro e the ride, toured the trails and had years of successful experience under her belt. It took Alkire about a week to say yes to start a full-time position, which required her to be at the o e ffi e in hoeni ail . he ons lte with then GWRRA Directors and friends Ray and Sandi Garris, Training Director Joe Price, and many others. She had only been retired one week, but based on the advice received, her immense love of GWRRA and its Members, and believing she could make a difference to grow GWRRA, she agreed to take the reins. “It was if I could make a difference for the membership of GWRRA. And if I could help this organization not only survive but thri e into the f t re reaffir s l ire. Only a week later and without even traveling a ho e l was her first a at the o e ffi e. he ha eg n her tas of re e al ating W s siness lan to f lfill the goals Paul and Dottie had given her “to grow the

company, to look at revenue opportunities, to look at new partnerships, to take it out of the box that it was currently in and expand what we were doing, to understand our membership, and to give leadership and direction within the company itself, internally to employees.” The Hildebrands wante her to ta e the fiel a to its ore values – excellence and pride in the association; honesty and trust; to focus on meeting the nee s of e ershi for staff an offi ers to have positive, enthusiastic and creative attitudes in their approach to provide an atmosphere for fun, safety and knowledge; that any issue would be fair; to share information and improve communications; provide good teamwork; to ha e well traine offi ers an staff an to e the best we can be while holding Members in highest esteem and respect. So from her unique perspective, straddling the two worl s etween o e ffi e an the fiel (volunteers and Members), Alkire set out on her ission. he first thing she i l learne was that the o e ffi e was o rise of a s all dedicated staff, and that each shouldered a lot of roles and responsibilities. “We think as volunteers we n erstan the o e ffi e. We thin as volunteers that if they would just do this, it would sol e all o r ro le s an o e ffi e wo l have a better understanding.” Now seeing the inside, a part of GWRRA she had never seen, and with the ability to make some change, Alkire i l reali e that o e ffi e ares st as h as the fiel a o t the organi ation.

She says there isn’t really a right or wrong place to put pins and patches on your vests if you have one or want to purchase one. Some Chapters may have guidelines for you to follow.

“I love leading, particularly when I’ve got a good team around me – from everyone, even those who disagree with you respectfully. It takes a team to develop a good atmosphere in GWRRA from chapter level to presidency.” She went about building the international team, called Team GWRRA, to assist her in implementing changes to set the organization back on the track for growth. Alkire says two and a half years ago she never

GWRRA dreamed that would include reorgani ation in the fiel . t years of group conversations and brainstorming, as well as research and feedback from thousands of past and current Members, volunteers, leadership, and others, led to the conclusion that eliminating Regions might help GWRRA more easily reach its goals. “We all needed to be closer to membership. We needed less bureaucracy.” She is excited about the shift back to focusing on the ride. Today, Alkire’s new main focus as president has shifted again, per guidance from the Hildebrands. She will spend ore ti e in the fiel to monitor and direct the drastic changes that have been made this past year. She and her team will assist Chapters and Districts as they become more ride oriented. She hopes to foster a more tolerant membership, so outsiders always feel welcomed into the fold. “We’re looking for how to still have fun but make way for another generation of Gold Wing Riders.” That new Gold Wing rider, explains Alkire, has a lot on their plates that Wingers in the 70s an 80s didn’t. “The range we are targeting, many are still active parents, still have kids in college, some have kids back from college, some have parents they are helping from a distance or who live with them, some are taking care of grandchildren. I look at the new Gold Wing and Honda’s focus on this new rider and wanting to make a bike that they can ride on shorter rides. The District may become more important to this population of Wingers who can’t make it to Chapter meetings but want to go for rides.” As to the part of membership that’s been around since the

beginning of GWRRA, Alkire hopes to help them see this new rider that rides differently than them from a different light. “We need to respect each other, respect our differences, respect how we each deal with change, and just care about each other. We have a group now who has time for a ride but not to be part of a Chapter. They want to connect with us but can’t commit right now because of the time to do so.” She reaffir s o on t go down the street and not wave at other bikers because they’re riding another brand of bike. So no Harley jokes. We’ll stay focused on the Honda brand, though open to all. Any touring bike is welcome – bike or trike.” Alkire also wants to honor the group of core Wingers, the older demographics who rode for years and love this organization. “When you make the decision to stop riding, you’re still a member. This was one reason Associate Members were eliminated. We’re all Members.” That’s the focus
now, that and going back to our core philosophies. Besides our core values, GWRRA has always been an organization that promotes safety. Alkire states, “We will never step away from that. We have to make it a little less formalized, more encouraging and fun.” Her plan is to share safety tips widely with membership and the public. “We must be

GWRRA good at explaining why certain practices are advantageous and providing information that helps others understand details about safe riding practices. Rider Ed is everyone’s responsibility. A new idea is to give some responsibly to our Masters.” She is calling it the Master Challenge because “sharing safety tips is huge.” Who knows what the future holds for the 2018 Gold Wing or GWRRA. Our success may be as unpredictable as a ride on the open road. But like any ride, having a good lead rider helps the group stay on course and reach its destination safely. “I have an amazing passion for this organization because of how it has impacted my life with friendships, opportunities, adventures on rides, seeing things you never thought you would see, and the astonishing experiences had from the seat of a motorcycle. You just can’t help but care. And you care deeply.” If she and her team can fin inno ati e wa s to rea h others and make them feel that magical connection GWRRA gives you, we’ll go far.

Taming the beast How I learned to ride my powerful Wing

t is said that it takes a big man to own up to his dark past, so this is my shot at greatness. Though it pains me to admit this, I confess … it took a long time to get used to riding a Gold Wing. Yes, it’s true! Some – maybe even a majority – of Gold Wing pilots want others to believe they climbed into the soft comfort of their heated saddles as if they were born to it. But if they were completely honest, they would admit that there was a certain amount of “adjustment” they had to make before they were entirely comfortable with handling their half-ton steel steed. I make no such pretenses. I absolutely had to conquer a host of biking demons before I truly felt at home on my big bike. first e erien e with a ol Wing was a complete surprise. My older brother, Jim Bob, showed up at my house one evening and ne e te l tosse e a set of e s. he were to a beautiful Silver and Black Gold Wing he had just brought home from the dealership. “Take it for a ride!” he said, grinning. “Just don’t wreck it!” That’s when my learning curve started. In all truth, it really began much earlier – about three decades earlier – when my brother and I rode our i es together in orth entral e as. e ha a ran new on a an ha a an we had a blast learning about motorcycles and riding. That came to a screeching halt, though. Wives and children quickly absorbed both our time and money, and riding was put off for a very long time. As I motored out-of-town on Bob’s big new machine, I noticed some things had changed.
For one, even though the day was cool and brisk, heat radiated up from the seat and I noticed that the palms of my hands were toasty warm. eate seats an han le ars weso e started reading the buttons on the dash … CB radio, AM/FM, cruise control, and a host of other mysterious controls told me this was a vastly ifferent a hine. e erse re o i ing e I was on the cusp of a whole new world. o s worl e an e ore i l . oon he was making epic treks to places such as New e i o olora o an e tre e so th e as. e racked up thousands of miles and brought back terrifi stories of roa s fille with t rns an o t of-the-way diners and spectacular vistas. I had to admit, I was envious. Then one day, Tami, my loving wife, asked me a pointed question completely out of the blue. Well are o going to get a i e or not thought a moment. Though my heart skipped a beat and I had to work at controlling my breathing, I answered in the most nonchalant tone I could muster, “It’s on the bucket list.” “Well, that bucket’s getting pretty full, and you’re sorta running out of time.” That was my beautiful wife’s charming way of implying I was no longer a spring chicken, but I shrugged off the insin ation. owe er that s how onl a o le of wee s later fo n self at a on a ealershi a o t iles fro ho e staring at a ig l e gleaming Gold Wing, which had just become my er own. aresse its olishe finish threw a leg over the seat and settled in. I can still remember the thought that hit me at that very moment. “Oh, crap! I’ve gotta ride this thing home!” The

The trip home might have been uncomfortable – at least psychologically – but it was uneventful. Indeed, I began to sense something stir in me, perhaps a pride in ownership of what is arguably the best touring bike on the planet. It’s that pride, I suspect, that most Gold Wing owners recognize and savor, but it can also lead us to being ne e te l h le . ne of first ri es aro n little ho etown bolstered that pride. Friends and neighbors recognized me and waved as I happily cruised the streets. The learning curve intervened abruptly, though, when I paused my maiden voyage at the lo al air een. onfi entl sli e into a clear spot in front of the local eatery, wondering who might be staring out the big plate glass windows and observing me as I hung my helmet on the handlebars – Joe Cool on two wheels. It
was then I learned one of the most basic rules of motorcycling: Thou shalt put your kickstand down before dismounting. Yes, I started to climb off the bike, it started to list, and I learned just how heavy a Gold Wing could be. Slowly, and despite my most heroic hernia inducing best efforts, the bike leaned over onto its roll bars. Suddenly, I was terrifie of who ight e loo ing o t those windows. Mean ol’ Mr. Gravity – lesson two came i e iatel on the heels of the first. learne st how quickly adrenaline kicks in and how fast one an i a o n i e when he oesn t want to be embarrassed in public. It appears that the old adage is correct … pride does, indeed, cometh before the fall. A bonus lesson: Don’t worry about what you look like on your bike. Pay attention and tend to business. Dang, this learning curve is steep! My brother was ecstatic when I showed up at his house on my motorcycle. Only a couple of days later, he invited me to accompany him on a relatively short ride on some local roads he said were full of fun “twisties”... whatever the heck
It happens. The trick is to determine what made it happen, then learn to overcome those factors in the future.

On one pass, as I swung into the about face, I found myself a little wide, and my eyes riveted on the standard curb that ringed the parking zone. That’s when my brain opened a dialog with the rest of my body that went something like this: Brain: “That’s a curb up ahead.” Eyes: “I see it.”
those were. t i n t ta e long to fin o t. We motored for a while on a wide interstate highway and then Bob turned off on a smaller farm-tomarket byway. Soon, the term “twisty” made perfect sense and I found myself leaning harder into curves than I ever remembered. Bob is, if anything else, a rather aggressive rider. Nothing see e es e iall iffi lt or ha ar o s so the ne t lesson in the learning r e was a o lete surprise. There I was, just following Bob as he carved a tight right-handed turn, when suddenly the curve seemed to get a lot tighter. I mean, one moment I was right where I thought I should e an the ne t was o er the ellow line an centered in the oncoming lane! Worse, the righthanded turn immediately morphed into a lefthanded turn and I was way, way out of position. That’s the moment I discovered “power braking,” and a phrase I remembered reading someplace, something about “riding within your envelope,” branded itself into my brain. Thankfully, there had een no on o ing traffi . t was well aware that if there had been, someone would have been sporting a huge new hood ornament, and a humiliated one at that. I started to try to learn my new machine in earnest. I desperately desired to get the hang of my bike and determined the best way might be to ra ti e regi ens of agilit an han ling e er ises on vacant lots. Before fellow GWRRA Members blast me, understand I was a newbie to riding a Wing. I had no idea there was an organization e i ate s e ifi all to ri ing these a hines with courses and classes to help people such as me adjust and sharpen my skills. I thought I was on my own. I chose a parking lot almost always empty after hours, but that had ample lights, set up lines of cones, and started putting my bike …

And that’s how I discovered the phenomenon nown as ha ar fi ation in whi h a ri er so rivets his attention upon a perceived danger that he can do nothing but steer directly toward it like a homing missile. Yes, it’s real … and it’s really humiliating to succumb to it. Fortunately, my front wheel was nearly perpendicular to the curb so that my bike jumped it cleanly. I did have the presence of mind to hit the turf on the other side braking heavily (at least I had retained that lesson from before). So I just barely impacted the light pole, but the bike still went over on its side, though undamaged. After I had paced for a few minutes to calm down, I collected my cones, my helmet and gloves (so I had thrown a few things … call it a temper tantrum) and remounted my bike. I drove straight to Bob’s house where I poured out my tro les an onfi e in hi that was serio sl afraid that I had bought more bike than I could handle. “It’s like this bike has its own laws of physics,” I lamented, and that’s a pretty big admission since I teach physics. Bob listened patiently and compassionately, and then he admitted something startling. felt the sa e wa at first he sai . hese bikes are a lot bigger and more powerful than
what we rode years ago. It’s going to take some time to get used to that. Don’t worry. Take it slow. Don’t push the envelope too hard, and be patient. It’ll come.” This led me to perhaps the greatest revelation of all in a entor. etter et fin ore than one. Ride with them. Watch closely. Ask questions and truly listen to their answers. Above all, don’t e afrai to e lain the iffi lties o ight e e erien ing an e o en to s ggestions. Nothing drove this point home more than when my brother gave me advice on how to overcome the ha ar fi ation s n ro e. oint o r nose where you want the bike to go,” he said. “If you don’t aim your face directly at the path you want to take, that bike will not turn!” t so n e too si le. owe er on ne t fora to the ar ing lot i e a tl as o suggested. As I began to negotiate a tight turn, I made a special effort to lock my eyes forward and t rn hea to fi ision on the tightest ath I could take. To my astonishment, the bike rolled itself into the turn readily. My turn radius shrank by nearl er ent t was as if s nshine ha rst through the haze of a perpetually cloudy day. The ultimate test is to get out on the open road and implement learned skills until they become second nature.

We sought out every convoluted line on the map, every roadway that was considered iconic and was spoken of in hushed, reverent tones when riders gathered to compare stories. Were there still moments when I backed off, slowed down and withdrew back into the safe onfines of en elo e re t there were also times when I twisted the throttle, leaned until the pegs scraped, and stretched that en elo e farther than it ha e er een e an e before. he final lesson is that the learning r e ight level out somewhat, but it should never go o letel at. n realit there is no final lesson. o atter how e erien e one ight e o e there is alwa s ore to now ore to e erien e. The curve should continue upwards for all of us, and we shouldn’t hesitate to share what we learn with others. f o enefite fro eing mentored, pay it forward by mentoring another new rider. After all, we’re told confession is good for us, and it might just be a Gold Wing rider’s true path to greatness.

Insert the new card the same way, pressing it in with a fingernail past the slot surface. When the card is properly inserted, the end of the card will be flush with the edge of the GPS. Replace the rubber cover. Now, let’s plan a route. Since most everyone is fa iliar with oogle a s we will se it first. Open Google Maps, and move the map to your starting point. You should zoom in enough to see the location accurately. Right-click on the starting point. A pop-up will appear, offering several selections. Click on “Directions from here,” and it will be inserted in the address list on the left of the screen. ow oo o t s roll the a to o r first sto zoom in for an accurate location, and right-click on the stop. In the pop-up, click on “Directions to here.” It will be inserted as the destination. Repeat the zoom out, scroll, zoom in, and right click on the next stop, this time selecting “Add a destination.” Repeat this zoom out, scroll, zoom in, and right click procedure until you have all your stops in the list (See figure 2). Here is where Google maps gets both better and worse than Trip Planner. It’s worse because there is no easy way I’ve found to rename the stopping points in the list. It’s far better, though, when it comes to changing the roads in the route. If a part of the route does not follow the roads you want, simply put your mouse over the current route, hold down the left button and drag the route line to the road you want it to take. Google maps will adjust the route at your request. If it moves to the point you select, but part of the route is still not what you want, drag the incorrect part to the road you want. With a little experimenting, you’ll soon be able to plot precisely the route you want to ride. Once you have the route the way you want it, click on the three bars at the upper left, and a menu will drop down. Select “Share or Embed Map,” and a small window will appear with a link to the map you have created. Click on “Short URL” to make the link a bit more manageable, then right click on the link and select copy. Here is where life gets a bit more complex. Google Maps stores route data in Keyhole Markup an age file for at an it has no eas wa to e ort a a to a file that o r an use. However, there are many utilities on the web
that will do the job for you. Simply do a Google sear h for oogle a s to an o ll fin a variety of hits. For this example, we’ll choose the logically named “mapstogpx.com,” because it allows us to paste in the link, instead of insisting that we ha e the file ownloa e . ele t the options “Route Points” and “Route Name.” Type a name for your route in the box, and click on “Let’s Go.” The route will be downloaded to your computer in GPX format. Perform the transfer and import functions as described in my earlier article [“Getting to know your GPS,” Jan. 2018, p. 46]. Another choice for route planning, and my personal favorite, is a program from the Netherlands na e re. he free ersion wor s st fine although it does reserve a portion of the screen for advertisements. At a cost, you can eliminate the advertisements and have a full screen mode. Tyre is an overlay for Google Maps. It allows you to use the same ease for setting your route as Google Maps, but also allows renaming the stops, and will generate a file ire tl . o an ownloa a copy of Tyre from the site www.tyretotravel.com/ download-tyre/. Tyre does start up a bit slowly, so e atient. t st loa itself onfig re itself an then load Google Maps before it is ready to use. To design a route in Tyre, load the program and zoom the map in to your starting point. Zoom way in, because Tyre places waypoints so accurately that if you have marked the wrong side of the road, it will add U-turns to your route and put you on the side of the road you have marked. Then, right-click on the stop, and select “New Waypoint (immediately).” A marker will appear on the map and the address will appear in the waypoint list on the left. Now left-click on the waypoint marker, and select “Rename.” Assign a meaningful name to your starting point, then close the window over the map. Now proceed in the same manner as if you were using Google Maps to add all your waypoints, and dragging the route map around to insure it chooses the roads you want. It’s a good idea to zoom way in and review each waypoint before you save the route, just to make certain that they are all exact (See Fig. 3). n e o r ro te is orre t sa e the file sing the nor al file sa e feat res of o r operating system. One great feature for planning multiday rides is the ability to measure time and distance between any two waypoints in your route. ele t the first wa oint of the a s ri e in the list on the left. Then shift-click on the end point for that day, and then click the red calculator in the toolbar. The day’s route will be highlighted, and the time and mileage will be shown above the waypoint list (See Figure ). Speed-way Motorsport Shelter
The DS-1 ULTRA By Lawrence “Murph” Murphy
I
recently found a need to protect my Gold Wing trike. The sun in Texas is relentless and deteriorates everything, plus my cat likes to nap on the seat leaving little dirty cat paw prints and hair on the seat and tank. Though I kept the trike under a covered porch on a wood deck, it always got wet because of the constant Texas wind. Then dust would accumulate on it. I looked at several shelters for motorcycles and trikes. Some seemed a bit small and some o anies ha not ro e one s e ifi all for trikes yet. It seemed like the ones for trikes were all similar. Then, I found the Speed-way Shelter DS-1 Ultra online through an authorized Speedway distributor/vendor for a price that beat all the others. Before purchasing, I went to Speed-way’s website to try to glean as much information as I could. I checked the measurements and the DS-1 ltra wo l fit oa s ith tri e with a bit of room to spare. I liked the multiple arm clamshell-like frame. It seemed extra strong, too. In addition, it touted that it could be set up on dirt, concrete or a wood deck. I took the leap and ordered one from the vendor on eBay. re ei e the shelter i l a o t fo r or fi e days). I was eager to see what I had bought and how it would perform. At that time, I was in the process of tearing out a section of my wooden

deck and had poured a small section in concrete s e ifi all for the tri e. in e was not one with the slab, I decided to, as advertised, set it up on the lawn. The frame went together easily and I only needed an adjustable wrench and a 1/2 inch wrench for four bolts on two support arms. The instructions and pictures made it simple. (Simple is good. I am easily confused by most assembly instructions.) It was color-coded and each piece locks into place with a spring lock. The base of the frame has holes in it to place bolts for securing it to concrete or wood. It also comes with sleeve bolts for this purpose. At the front of the shelter on the baseplate are four holes and on the two side plates, where the multiple arms for the clamshell are attached, there are two holes on ea h si e. se long in h tent s i es fro Wal art for ents ea h. o probably should use 12 tent spikes. A total of eight for the frame and four for guy rope tiedown points (guy lines not included). These are on the front and back with well-sewn tabs. The cover is put on by sliding the fabric up and over the open frame and is attached with Velcro wraps. These appear to be the industrial type. They grip really well. Product review it see there is alwa s at least one he first ti e I opened and closed the shelter with the cover in place, I heard a pop! After a walkabout, I found that a metal tab on the left side had struck the metal tab opposite it and broke off. These tabs are a means of securing the shelter with your trike inside and include a grommet on the right side of the shelter to run a cable through to the left. Then, when the shelter is in the closed position, the two metal tabs line up and make a place to secure a padlock through the tabs and the eye of a cable (not included). Now, I have enough skill to use the mig wire welder I own, and to straighten the piece and respot weld it, then hit it with a rattle can of paint. But before I did, I decided to place a call to Speed-way Shelter. I spoke with Vincent, one of the owners. Vincent was easy to speak with and within a matter of two days I had a whole new left side base with the multiple arms already attached. Vincent could have easily just sent the baseplate itself, which would have required me to unbolt all the arms and reattach them to the new baseplate. But instead, all I had to do was depress the spring clip on each and place the upper arm into the lower arms of the new left side plate. I had also advised Vincent that I was worried about the UV in Texas and learned there was an e tra re e ti e shiel . t was not rohi iti el expensive and the shelter already had toggles in place to secure the cover, so I opted to get one (cheap extra insurance). Vincent also included a complimentary spray bottle of a UV preventive spray since I had the problem. The UV cover, which arrived with the replacement left baseplate, fit right on to an se re easil . Also important, you can pull your trike right into the shelter, park and close the shelter without worrying about hot pipes. They won’t touch the aterial. o also o not ha e to worr a o t condensation. There are two screened vents at the front top, which have Velcro closures all the way around and can be opened, rolled up and then secured with their own tab and toggles. Back to the guy lines – If you are in an area of high winds, Speed-way recommends you use additional guy lines to further secure the shelter. I opted to use four guy lines, which were put through the test within a couple of days. We experienced 2-plus inches of rain within an hour an win s at h g sting to o er h. he shelter did not budge and was directly exposed to these elements. There was nothing to break the
wind or rain. Impressively, after I had forgotten to close the screened vents, the screen caught the driving rain and the trike did not get wet at all. Pluses all around in my book! in e then finishe a in h thi re ar an wire concrete pad under the covered porch and have used 3-1/2 inch concrete anchor screws to secure the base of the shelter. It opens easily under this porch with an inch or so to spare in height. n the tri e fits with lent of roo on the sides and back. The front wheel barely touches the front material. Of course, you do have to lower the antennas on the Wing and I also lower rear ag. ha e a o nt whi h ilt that stan s the ag o t ehin the rear of the luggage rack instead of on the sides. I usually onl one ag. This is a good product that has stood up to rainstorms and windstorms and heavy sun (the porch has clear panels for sunlight). It was easy to assemble and the company supports its product if there is a problem. It takes 15 seconds to access your trike, without it being locked down, and about one minute if you do. One little additional perk – Speed-way also supplies a two brightness LED battery powered light you can hang inside the shelter. I put mine on the next-to-the-last arm in back so when the shelter is open and I pull in at night, I can reach up without leaving the saddle and turn on the light. Makes it nice to get stuff out of the trunk or tour pack without having to leave the motor running. Then, I can dismount the trike and turn off the light and then close the shelter. or many reasons I decided to buy a trike. I found several trikes for sale at dealerships and online sites. But it seemed as if most of the dealers wouldn’t work with me on a trade-in or price. I live in Texas, an hour ride to the Dallas/ Fort Worth Metroplex or 45 minutes northeast of Waco. At the time, my motorcycle was a 2010 Harley-Davidson FLHTCU Special Edition Peace ffi er in the two tone ar o al l e ight Blue. t one of the ealers got a fairl goo initial price on a brand new 2017 H-D Ultra Trike. I found two on their website that were 2007s that had the setup I wanted and were triked with oa s ith on ersions. n both with less than 30K. I emailed the dealership with an inquiry and received a reply from owner Kevin Dodd. After many questions and email correspondences, too the lea an o ght a tri e ha ne er h si all e a ine or ro e. inan ing was arrange thro gh le an the own payment wired. In about a week the trike was eli ere s own eli er ser i e right to house. It was unloaded, but this time without any in i ent. o nte the Wing tri e an too it for a quick trip up the driveway and back. irst thing I can say is this is not like a ride to Gatlinburg or a weeklong ride to any other place. Counting leaving home, this ride is 1925 days of commitment and determination. For my wife, Denise, and me it was 22 days of getting up and riding anywhere from 416 to 632 miles a day. That doesn’t sound like much until about day fi e. en the one a where we onl ro e miles (West Yellowstone and Beartooth Pass over to Billings, Montana), we were still in the saddle over eight hours. We’re not trying to talk anyone out of this and we were not Herculean by any means. We just want to make the point that after a fo r or fi e this is wor so e of the ost fun work you’ll ever do, but work nonetheless. Be prepared both mentally and physically for what lies ahead, then sit back and enjoy the ride

Preride preparations Get a good insulated water jug. Denise had a favorite water jug that lasted four days. Then we bought a much better insulated jug at Walmart. That one was awesome! Speaking of Walmart, pay $3.99 and get a Cool Neck neckerchief out of the camping supplies section. It has some kind of silicone beads sewn inside and when you get it wet, they absorb the water and remain cool for hours. We bought two and it was probably the single best purchase we made the entire trip! They saved us while crossing the desert. Stop for gas or a potty break, wet it down in the sink, put it back on and go on for hours. I cannot overstate how good these were. Get some anti-monkey butt! A good friend gave both Denise and me a container each of

For those who think it’s a joke, AMB is an anti-friction ow er with ala ine li e a ow er onl much better. Our Airhawk-R seat pillows were good, but the couple days I forgot to put on AMB, new it efore we ha gone iles. it se it es e iall on the inner thighs. Buy route planning software like Microsoft Streets and Maps. We planned out our ride on this and used it to plan all of our overnight stays. Once the ride started, we updated our route every night to see how far we should go and about where we would get to the next day. I had ours set on departing 0900 and riding to 1730, with 15-minute stops every three hours to fig re in gas sto s. What we a t all i was
leave each morning ~0830 and ride until 18001830, counting gas stops and lunch. By doing it this way, it matched well for our hotel stops and I could get online and reserve our hotel for the following night. If you’re retired and have no reason to stay on a schedule or are independently wealthy, this won’t matter to you. However, we’re neither and it helped us immensely. Get new tires, fresh oil, nitrogen in the tires (my own referen e ra iator i et . hese are going to save your bike and mean the difference between being broken down on the side of the road and getting off at your next planned stop. If you cannot afford new tires to start on, you can’t afford to replace them along the way. Sign up for AAA RV Plus or Rescue Plus. For this ride, I had both. Besides breakdown WINGWORLDMAG.COM

Don’t over pack! I packed too much. I had 10 long slee e shirts an fi e short slee e ees thinking I would change the long-sleeved every day and keep putting a short-sleeved over top. onl wore two at a ti e going the a ifi Coast Highway, and that was for warmth. I mailed about half of my shirts back to Casa Grande, Arizona. You’ll want about eight pairs of socks and underwear and two to three pairs of pants. o ll fin a la n r e er fo r to fi e a s t you’ll be worn out, the machines won’t work, or any number of other reasons to have to stretch to seven or eight days. It’s your call. However, do pack for all seasons. We rode through hours and hours of rain (Frogg Toggs), hours and hours of desert (cooling neckerchiefs an long slee e shirts wish we ha ha ooling ests ol along the a ifi oast o ntain Hardware jackets and Frogg Toggs), etc. Plan ahead to layer and with clothes that will go on and come off easily. Take two pairs of boots (one to wear and one to r o t an a air of i o s or tennis shoes. Whether it rains or not, you need to change o t oots. lso the i o s or tennis shoes will come in handy for breakfast or even to get out of boots for a couple hours in the evening. Take care of your feet! Get some kind of tire pump or compressor. I o ght the le tire in ator an air gauge combo for $120. Between the four tires, I used it about 10 times along the way during morning checks. It was great to know I wasn’t filling tires with on ensation fro an ol gas station air pump. There is another log by a rider who went by the name MotorcycleManiac. He did the ride in 2005. Denise and I both read every day of his blog a couple months before we took off on our own. Plus or minus 22 days wears on a body and you will need your strength. Keep yourself healthy. Riding in rain, heat, for long hours, etc., takes a toll. You’ll only stay healthy if you try. Fluids! Stay hydrated! I was drinking a 32-ounce bottle of Gatorade or Powerade between every tank of gas. en then in the esert it wasn t eno gh. f you don’t need to hit the bathroom at nearly every stop you’re not drinking enough. Period. Check your tire pressure and oil every morning. Make it part of your routine. I put on brand new tires to start this ride and the front still looks like it has less than a couple thousand miles on it e en after going al ost iles. owe this to a combination of good tires (Bridgestone s na ea s for tire alan ing an keeping the tire pressure constant. Take care of your bike and it’ll take care of you. Let long distance friends know you’re coming. We stayed with a dear friend in Austin and just getting out of the hotel for one night
was terrifi not o nting the great ho e a e meal! (Debbie, thank you very much for your warm hospitality.) If you’re towing a trailer, take a small overnight bag. One of the parts we really started dreading was having to pull our heavy@ss suitcases out every night and repack them every morning. We could have put two or three sets of shirts, socks, underwear and toiletries in a small bag to take into the room and saved ourselves some redundant effort. That’s something to remember for next time. Allow yourself a down day. When we got to Yellowstone, we decided to take a slow day through Yellowstone and over Beartooth Pass. This day, while we did continue forward momentum, we only rode 254 miles. Anyway, allow yourself a light day to renew a bit. Safety, safety, safety! You can die just as easily on the other side of the country as you can a mile from home. Assume every vehicle is about to hit you and have your response plans set up. This is a constant effort when you ride and being on vacation makes it no less important. Also, if you wouldn’t do something at home, don’t do it on the road. For example, Denise had wine periodically at dinners along the way, but the only time I had any alcohol was either in the room (at the very end of the day) or at the in-hotel resta rant. ta safe sta ali e. Treat your trailer as part of your bike. If you haul a trailer, take its tires as seriously as you do the bike’s. Check them daily as well. If you have the smaller tires like I do, take a spare. Mine weren’t wearing well and I swapped out the spare for one two-thirds of the way through. I still kept the one we removed as a backup. But don’t keep yourself from doing or getting routine maintenance along the wa . o an t finish on ro en gear. Plan ahead to change your oil. Whether you change at 3K, 5K, 10K, whatever your preference, you’re going to have to do it somewhere along the ride. I tried to go lazy and the shop I stopped at wo l n t fit e in. o iss e. ha alrea planned to change my oil in an AutoZone parking lot. ha the filter an the sell the oil an oil pan. When you’re done, give them the oil pan and used oil and get back on the road. However you do it, just do it. If you can, keep a blog. So far (as of eight days after our return), we’ve had over 9,000 views. People want to ride along, even when they can’t. It also makes you remember what you did that day. Double pleasure. Steve Clayton rode a Yamaha 250 at about age 13, then a Kawasaki KH400 and 440LTD from 76-83. He and his wife, Denise, got back into riding in 2005. Not counting time on a 1987 Kawasaki Police Special and 2003 Honda Shadow between 2006-2008, he’s put over 100K miles on GL1800s since 2008. They’ve ridden their 2008 GL1800 in 48 states and rented Harleys to ride in the other two. Last year, Steve led N.C. Rider Education

A
lot of discussion recently is about how much more District Educators (DE) are expected to do as volunteers. The main concerns seem to be the N.6 Report, administering the Rider Education Levels Program, and how DEs are expected to gather all of this information. With the removal of the Chapter Educator position, there seems to be dread among DEs as to how much more time will be required of them to accomplish their tasks adequately. The Chapter Educator did a lot of legwork to provide info to the DE. You might say the DE got spoiled and is not sure where to go from here. With much thought about this dilemma, we offer three suggestions (one this month, two next month): 1. How can a DE gather all of the information needed to complete the N.6 form? Ideally, all training should be funneled through the District, either to the Educator, District University Coordinator or Member Enhancement Coordinator. Training requests should originate at the Chapter, with the Chapter Director submitting a list of desired training to the DE, University Coordinator or Member Enhancement Coordinator. The District will locate Instructors to provide training with the idea of getting as many neighboring Chapters together as possible to present the training to. When training is completed, the Class Roster is sent to the DE for input into the Rider Education Database. This lass roster will e se to fill o t the ifferent training ategories on the . . a h ha ter sho l also provide the District with a calendar of planned rides, at least quarterly. This list should be posted on the District website for all Chapters to see rides available throughout the District. Unless a ride is canceled, the DE can use the scheduled rides as input for the N.6. Each Chapter and District should publish a newsletter monthly. The number of newsletters should equal the number of Chapters plus the District. To obtain the number of newsletter recipients, Chapter and District Directors can be queried for numbers. All Levels Application and Renewals will go through the DE. Keep track of applications and renewals and that section of the N.6 can be completed.

Jerry had a devotion to Motorist Awareness in addition to Rider Ed. Jerry and I worked together to create and purchase yard signs to advertise for MA, along with other ways to create awareness for motorcycles in the motoring public world. Ohio Chapter celebrates 30 years
N
ov. 5, 1987, GWRRA issued a charter for Ohio Chapter E-1, on the eastside of Cincinnati, hence, the moniker of “Eastside Wing i ers. he first gathering was hel o . with Clyde and Joyce Jones as Area Representatives. With lose to atten ees at this first gathering and nearly as many attending the next two gatherings, Chapter E-1 started out strong, with 323 Charter Members. This represented the largest charter membership of any Ohio chapter at that time. In 1995, GWRRA decided to change the names of the chapters designated with “1” to the number “2,” and April 15, 1995, Chapter E-1 offi iall e a e ha ter . In order to make this birthday especially special, the chapter team made arrangements to change locations for this gathering and to serve dinner to those who attended. Ninety-seven friends dined on home-cooked barbecue, coleslaw, baked beans, macaroni and cheese, and birthday cake! Guests included Region D Directors Lloyd and Becky Glydewell, Ohio District Directors Rudy
and Linda Copeland, Ohio Southwest Assistant District Director Darrin Ebright, with J.J., and numerous friends from Ohio Chapter X-2. Chapter Directors Tom and Cookie Salamon (who have participated in the chapter for the last 19 of its 30 years of existence) recapped the history of the chapter and noted the recognition and awards garnered through the years, as well as all of the charity work and contributions performed by the chapter. Current Individual of the Year, Maury Dick, singled out, as his 90th birthday was also celebrated. It was noted that at 90 years old he is still actively riding his 1800 Gold Wing!

like to ride all year round. The roads were clear and dry when I left my house for the 15-minute ride to work on Feb. 23, 2017. It wasn’t until about halfway there, snow started to accumulate on the road. I was very glad to make it to work without an accident.

his photo was taken at another Winger’s home. We were replacing the standard speakers with the J&M upgrade. These speakers are awesome and well worth the money. I am also very pleased with my 2006 Gold Wing. This is my third Gold Wing – I also had a 1980 and 1989. I have traveled coast to coast on my first two.
