Letter from the Regent
It is with great pleasure that I write to you today, reflecting on the remarkable achievements of the Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association in 2022. This past year, tremendous progress was made in our education and preservation efforts, ensuring a vibrant future for this historic estate.
I often think about what this place, Mount Vernon, means. Mount Vernon is the heart of George Washington. It is a place where his legacy and leadership inspire ideas and intellectual engagement, enveloping people of all ages and backgrounds. It is a place where history is not static but becomes a living, shared narrative that continues to unfold. It is a place of natural beauty where we honor the founding of our country every single day.
And what would this place be if not for the trailblazing founder of the Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association (MVLA), Ann Pamela Cunningham, who, in 1858, secured the purchase of Mount Vernon from the Washington family? The MVLA continues to honor the long-standing stewardship of its mission to preserve, restore, and manage the estate of George Washington and educate visitors about his life and legacy, inspiring future generations.
In 2022, we celebrated the opening of the highly anticipated museum exhibit, Mount Vernon: The Story of an American Icon. This exhibit is a testament to the long history of Mount Vernon and tells the story of those who shaped it, from the earliest native settlers, the Washington and Custis family members, the enslaved and
hired laborers, and the Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association. Also on display in the exhibit is the largest collection of original Washington objects, many of which were acquired in 2022.
This past year also saw the debut of Mount Vernon’s latest short film production, George Washington and the Pursuit of Religious Freedom. The film, which analyzes religious freedom in early America and Washington’s role in ensuring religious freedom for all, has a far-reaching impact through our educational outreach programs and lesson plans for teachers. In a time of rising antisemitism across the globe, Washington’s message of religious liberty could not be more relevant or needed.
The Mansion is the central focus of our many preservation efforts. We have recently completed the four-year project to restore the exterior façade and provide much-needed protection for the nearly 85% original fabric of the building’s exterior. As I write this letter, the scaffolding has been removed, but the work on the Mansion is just beginning. Over the next few years, the Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association is embarking on its most ambitious preservation work on the home of George Washington since its purchase more than 165 years ago.
The Mansion is a wooden structure that has welcomed more than one million guests each year for nearly a century. The goal of the Mansion Revitalization project is to preserve and protect the Mansion as it enters its fourth century. As the nation’s first
preservationists, we are committed to securing this shining beacon for the next century of visitors.
On behalf of the Board, I thank you for your commitment and for embracing our mission. Your generous support underscores the many initiatives across the estate and shows firsthand the power of investing in the future. Together, we will continue to protect and advance the enduring legacy of George Washington.

4 The Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association
Letter from the President
Iam delighted to share with you the remarkable achievements of the Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association throughout the year 2022. At a time when Americans are anxious about the polarized and often uncivil nature of our political discourse, the mission of the MVLA—to preserve Washington’s home at the highest level and educate people around the world about his extraordinary legacy—remains remarkably powerful and relevant. And I am happy to note that in 2022 we served that mission well, and with exceptional reach and impact.
In 2022, we welcomed a budgetbusting 830,000 guests to Mount Vernon, the highest number since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, and many more than we had anticipated in the slow summer of 2021. Our hope is that each of these visitors connects their life to the great experiment in democracy launched by George Washington and is inspired to recognize his remarkable achievements in the creation of American liberty. I know visits in the past have stayed with visitors, as I have heard countless stories from supporters as I travel across the country about how their visit to Mount Vernon has forever influenced them, even if it was just a school trip to the nation’s capital.
Mount Vernon holds a unique ability to reflect the entirety of our nation’s history. Through its celebration of George Washington’s life as the commander-in-chief of the Continental Army, chair of the Constitutional Convention, and the nation’s first president, it embodies the spirit of our great nation. Through the principles enshrined in our Constitution, Bill of
Rights, and the ongoing evolution of civic engagement, we find common ground as Americans. George Washington’s importance persists, and we continue to celebrate his legacy today. But we can also recognize the reality of Mount Vernon as a plantation site, a place of innovation but of course of slavery. The lives of the people enslaved at Mount Vernon can be best understood by visiting Mount Vernon, seeing the world they built together with the Washingtons, and learning about the legacy of their lives, passions, and triumphs.
One of the most significant impacts we make is through our educational outreach. Our free classroom materials, on-site teacher workshops, and virtual professional development programs have reached many teachers in school districts across all states, utilizing the best virtual learning tools identified during the pandemic. In 2022, we completed our fifth short film, George Washington and the Pursuit of Religious Freedom, available to stream for free, along with lesson plans to share with teachers around the country. In the last year, we were honored to premiere the film in New York, California, Texas, and Rhode Island to hundreds of enthusiastic crowds, while thousands of schoolkids have been able to learn these critical lessons in the classroom.
The George Washington Presidential Library, driven by hundreds of academic researchers who visit each year, continues to be a leading center for studying George Washington’s 18thcentury world. Our digitization efforts, such as those relating to the George Washington, Martha Washington, and family papers, along with the American
Revolutionary Geographies Online (ARGO) project, extend the Library’s influence globally. In 2022, the Mount Vernon Symposium brought together the world’s foremost horticulturalists, and we celebrated our third international symposium in Madrid on “Spain and the Global Struggle for United States Independence” in November.
Once again, I want to express my gratitude to each and every one of you for your unwavering support. Without your dedication, none of these achievements would have been possible. Your contributions, be they financial, through membership, or simply spreading the word about Mount Vernon, make a difference. Together, we are preserving the legacy of George Washington and ensuring that Mount Vernon survives, so that the experiment in self-rule launched by our great hero will last for generations to come.
With deepest appreciation,
Douglas Bradburn, Ph.D. President and CEO

STRENGTHENING OUR FOUNDATIONS
The Campaign for Mount Vernon B
y the end of 2022, Strengthening Our Foundations: The Campaign for Mount Vernon had raised more than $130 million for the important projects chronicled in these pages.
Through the support of this Campaign, Mount Vernon is taking on immediate preservation challenges, ensuring educational resources and programs are second to none, and increasing annual support while building a transformational endowment that will secure the financial strength of the Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association (MVLA).
The MVLA was honored to be one of 16 organizations from across the United States to receive a grant from Lilly Endowment Inc., through the second round of its Religion and Cultural Institutions Initiative. The grant will support the interpretation of religion across the estate as we educate visitors about George Washington’s religiosity, the importance of the establishment of freedom of religion in the founding of our country, and the religious practices of the 18th-century community at Mount Vernon, including those who
were enslaved. This will take place through tours, brochures, Library acquisitions, and updated content in the Donald W. Reynolds Museum and Education Center exhibition on George Washington’s biography.
Planning, content development, and design work are underway for the rejuvenation of this exhibition. This effort will transform the footprint and flow of the experience to be more impactful and immersive for more visitors, improve navigation and access to popular features, incorporate the

latest methods of museum education, and refresh displays with the most current scholarship. John and Adrienne Mars pledged their support for this project, and Jacqueline B. Mars also designated half of her commitment to the exhibition’s revitalization. The remainder will support the Campaign’s priorities of historic preservation, education, and endowment.
Many projects supported through the Campaign were completed in 2022. These include the restoration of the New Tomb, the reinterpretation of the Lafayette and Small Rooms, and the
opening of the museum exhibit, Mount Vernon: The Story of an American Icon Boeing made a major five-year commitment to underwrite a number of Mount Vernon’s public events including those on July 4, Purple Heart Day, and Veterans Day.
We continued to expand our reach to new audiences nationwide. During 2022, events emphasizing the importance of George Washington and Mount Vernon were held in Florida, Illinois, New York, Rhode Island, and Texas, with many hosted by Vice Regents.
We are grateful to the tens of thousands of donors from across the country who have supported the Campaign at all levels, and opportunities remain to become involved in the Campaign. Many important projects need funding, and every gift makes a difference as we strive to ensure Mount Vernon remains a shining symbol of American independence for generations to come.

PRESERVING THE MANSION AND HISTORIC AREA
Mansion East Front Restoration
As spring brought baby lambs and daffodils to Mount Vernon, our preservation team embarked on restoration of the Mansion’s East Front, the third and final phase of a multiyear project encompassing the entire exterior of the house. Beginning in 2019, work on each façade has proceeded systematically: removal of more than twenty layers of modern paint and sand to expose the wooden siding boards; identification and documentation of original elements and later repairs; repairs to the siding, windows, window and door trim, and shutters; and finally, application of fresh paint and sand, carefully matched to George Washington’s original finishes.
The General’s distinctive twostory piazza presented the East Front
restoration with added challenges. The piazza’s ceiling, entablature, and columns expanded the scope of the project, increasing the area treated to 5,000 square feet, compared with 2,550 for the West Front. Deterioration to the framing of the entablature, due to water infiltration, required the design and execution of significant carpentry repairs. We also repaired and repainted the cupola and three dormers, all of which have survived substantially intact from the 18th century. The golden ball of the weather vane was re-gilded and is shining brightly again.
We also learned a great deal about the piazza’s construction history. The current structure is the thirdgeneration addition to the Mansion since 1777, with the entablature dating
to 1860 and the pillars to 1893. Harrison H. Dodge, former Mount Vernon Resident Superintendent, and his crew even left us a message dated September 12, 1893, as testament to their work.
After the last handful of sand was thrown onto the linseed oil paint on the columns and entablature, the team transitioned to paint removal on the siding, working through the fall and winter under the shelter of the piazza roof. The final phase of the Mansion’s exterior restoration was completed on schedule in April 2023.

PRESERVING THE MANSION AND HISTORIC AREA
New Tomb Restoration
In 2022, Mount Vernon’s preservation and project management teams collaborated with preservation architects and specialist artisans to complete a major restoration of George and Martha Washington’s New Tomb, a revered site of pilgrimage for visitors from across the nation and the world for almost two centuries. Located on a site specified by George Washington in his 1799 will, the Tomb consists of three main sections constructed in the 1830s: an enclosed vestibule housing the marble sarcophagi of General and Mrs. Washington; an underground vault extending back into the hillside, containing the remains of other Washington family members; and a brick perimeter wall.
An in-depth condition assessment completed in December 2021 documented the MVLA’s historic efforts to manage the damaging effects
of moisture on this semi-subterranean structure. The last major restoration campaign occurred in the 1930s, when Mount Vernon Superintendent Colonel H.H. Dodge’s attempts to waterproof the roof were so successful that they not only prevented rainwater from getting in, they inadvertently trapped water vapor rising from the ground. This trapped water vapor slowly deteriorated the lath, nails, and plaster that made up the ceiling over the sarcophagi, ultimately causing the plaster to fail.
To address this underlying problem, new vents at the eaves and a covered vent at the roof peak were installed to allow water vapor to escape, without admitting rainwater. Several coats of polymeric sealant were applied to the metal roof, with each coat a different color so that future preservationists will be able to monitor when the top coats wear away. Inside the vestibule, plaster and
damaged wood lath were stripped away and replaced; original wood ceiling ribs were painstakingly reinforced.
The most time-consuming work involved raking (cleaning out) all exposed mortar joints—on interior and exterior faces of the perimeter wall as well as the vestibule. This was necessary because the hard Portland cement used as mortar in the 1930s was forcing moisture into the soft 1830s bricks, causing deterioration. Repointing with a soft mortar matched to the 1830s mix will prevent further damage. No interventions were needed to the inner vault, and the Washingtons’ sarcophagi were carefully protected with custom plywood boxes throughout the restoration campaign, which has put the final resting place of General Washington in excellent condition for the 21st century.
The restoration of the Tomb was generously supported by Wayne and Grace Rickert; The Society of the Cincinnati in the State of Virginia; the George L. Ohrstrom, Jr. Foundation; Mr. and Mrs. Richard J. J. Sullivan, Jr.; the Grand Lodge, A.F. & A.M. of Virginia; Ms. Estelle Stamm; and others from across the country.

PRESERVING THE MANSION AND HISTORIC AREA
The Lafayette and Small Rooms
The year marked an important milestone in the Mansion restoration as preservation and curatorial teams completed the Lafayette and Small Rooms, bringing all of the bedchambers in the secondfloor core of the house into alignment with the latest paint analysis and research. All now feature the creampainted woodwork preferred by George and Martha Washington in the 1790s, reproductions of period wallpapers, and distinctive furnishings representative of specific purchases by the couple. The visible hierarchy of the rooms vividly presents itself in the gradation of quality, material, and color in the furnishings of the Yellow, Chintz, Blue, Lafayette, and Small Rooms.
Analysis of George and Martha Washington’s probate inventories, purchase records, and the recollections of an early Vice Regent enabled curators to bring back the rich history of the Lafayette Room. The Marquis de Lafayette stayed in the room in 1784 and gave his name to the space, but by 1799, the furnishings listed in the space and the lower values assigned to them on the inventory suggested that a family member was using the room. The recollections of Betsy Mason, Vice Regent for Virginia in 1872, provided the missing piece of the puzzle, confirming that Martha Washington’s granddaughter Eleanor (Nelly) Parke Custis Lewis and her husband, Lawrence Lewis, had used the room in 1799.
The focal point of the room is the three-quarter length portrait of the Marquis de Lafayette, a high-quality reproduction of the original that once hung here, and is currently on view in the museum. Hung in the room after Lafayette’s visit, the portrait served as a remembrance of the room’s most famous occupant and Washington’s adopted son. A set of mid-18th century Virginia-made walnut chairs with pierced but uncarved backs represent a type of locally-made chairs occasionally used at Mount Vernon, and offer an
instructive contrast to the carved mahogany, London-made chairs found in more expensively furnished guest chambers. Red-striped cotton, neat and elegant, drapes the high-post bed, windows, and chairs, a simple fabric characteristic of the modest furnishings used by the Lewises in the 1790s. The reproduction wallpaper is a sophisticated flower sprig pattern. Its black-and-white design with deep pink accents features a motif inspired by Persian and Indian textiles, popular in elite American homes in the late-18th century.
The aptly named Small Room allowed the Washingtons to accommodate additional guests when other bedchambers were full. To represent its comfortable but simple furnishings, curators installed an original Washington-owned shaving stand, a period Virginia-made low-post bedstead, dressing table, and Windsor chairs. The reproduction wallpaper features a repeating fan design.

Mount Vernon: The Story of an American Icon
In March 2022, Mount Vernon unveiled an expansive and inclusive new permanent exhibition, Mount Vernon: The Story of an American Icon. The exhibition traces the rich and complex history of Mount Vernon—not only the celebrated era of George and Martha Washington, but the lesser-known stories of the enslaved community, earlier and later generations of Washingtons, and the MVLA.
Across nearly 5,000 square feet and seven galleries, the exhibition presents Mount Vernon’s permanent collection in new and innovative ways. Architectural changes opened up additional sightlines into the museum, providing visitors in the lobby with a sneak peek of what lies
in store for them inside. Bold colors, lively patterns, and state-of-the-art casework activate furniture, paintings, silver, and ceramics, creating a fresh, modern setting for these historic objects.
The object-rich exhibition represents the largest reunion of original Mount Vernon artifacts since the dispersal of George and Martha Washington’s estates in 1802. Visitors can revel in the details of such iconic objects as George Washington’s swiveling office chair, Nelly Custis’s state-of-the-art harpsichord, and the Mansion’s original gilded weathervane. Many objects— Martha Washington’s diamond-studded pocket watch, her ruffled cotton robe, a French porcelain ice cream cooler—are
new to Mount Vernon’s collections, treasured by Martha’s descendants for generations before the MVLA acquired them in 2020. Through a landmark loan from Washington and Lee University, the exhibition also brings together the original Washington and Custis family portraits. Once displayed together in Mount Vernon’s front parlor, these paintings include Charles Willson Peale’s 1772 portrait of a 40-yearold George Washington, the earliest portrait of him.
These paintings and decorative arts are paired with never-before-exhibited artifacts from Mount Vernon’s architectural and archaeological collections. Fragments of stone tools

from 10,000 years ago, the Mansion’s original cupola spire, a handmade brick with finger impressions of its anonymous maker, a fragment of the piazza’s 19th-century balustrade: these objects reveal the layers of Mount Vernon’s complex history, which includes Native settlements, other Washington family members, enslaved and hired laborers, and the determined women of the MVLA who raised
$200,000 to purchase the property in 1860 and continue to preserve and operate the site today.
The exhibition features three major sections. “Making Mount Vernon: The Work of Many Hands” traces the evolution of Mount Vernon’s landscape, from seasonal Native settlements 10,000 years ago, through John Washington’s 1674 land patent, to George Washington’s dramatic overhaul of the house and
grounds. Visitors also meet the 19thcentury Washingtons who managed Mount Vernon as Americans began to visit en masse, transforming a private home into a national shrine.

instruments, porcelain punch bowls, garnet jewelry, a child’s teething rattle. Visitors learn about the power of objects to reveal the Washingtons’ values, taste, and identities, while also discovering the hidden histories of the enslaved people whose lives were intertwined with the Washingtons. Archaeological artifacts from a slave quarter reveal how members of that community treasured objects of their own.

“Saving Mount Vernon: The Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association of the Union” explores the trailblazing work of the nation’s oldest national historic preservation organization. Beginning with MVLA founder Ann Pamela Cunningham’s innovative fundraising campaign in the 1850s, the display showcases the work of the women who meticulously restored and continue today to preserve Mount Vernon. Through architectural fragments, early acquisitions, and historic photographs, visitors learn about the MVLA’s groundbreaking preservation work and ongoing leadership in the field.
In addition to these three permanent
sections, the Gilder Lehrman Gallery provides a space for changing displays on special topics. The opening installation focuses on new acquisitions, highlighting treasures from the Peter Family Collection and the Richard H. Brown Revolutionary War Map Collection. The seven cases in this gallery will be updated regularly to present new discoveries and showcase material on relevant and timely topics.
Throughout the galleries, visitors “meet” individuals who have shaped Mount Vernon, including Washington and Custis family members, enslaved and hired laborers such as cook Hercules Posey and fieldhand Delia,
prominent visitors including presidents and royalty, and some of the nearly 300 Vice Regents who have served as board members since 1860. Interactive touchscreens enable visitors to engage with the objects and history, providing opportunities to “play” the harpsichord, zoom in on paintings and artifacts, and explore how and why the Mansion’s appearance has changed over time.
With Mount Vernon: The Story of an American Icon, visitors can revel in Mount Vernon’s extraordinary collections and immerse themselves in the history of this iconic place. By the time they leave, they will realize that they, too, are part of Mount Vernon’s story.

Student Learning
Seeing Mount Vernon through a student’s perspective can be both enlightening and powerful. In 2022, students picked words such as “fun,” “amazed,” and “curious” to describe their experience. The staff at Mount Vernon adjusted to the welcome return of student groups to the estate with new programs created during the pandemic years of 2020 and 2021 that provided more engaging outdoor and immersive experiences for students on-site. Additionally, our staff reached even more students with new digital programs accessible to classrooms.
On-site, nearly 300,000 students explored all corners of Mount Vernon and shared that the highlights of their experiences ranged from the Mansion to the farm, and the Tomb and cemetery to the museum. We brought back our early access for student groups, including an optional breakfast addon, during our high-traffic season in the spring and early summer, which provided students an additional hour of visitation. Inviting students into the Mansion before our more traditional tourists arrive allows us to switch our Mansion interpretation to one better suited to student curiosity, social engagement, and high volume.
The Mansion is the highlight of most visits, but student experiences thrive in other places at Mount Vernon, too. We saw 87% of student groups visit the Donald W. Reynolds Museum and Education Center and 70% visit the Tomb and cemetery area. During
our Colonial Days program, 5,000 students explored an activated farm area, and 2,500 people from homeschool groups did the same at our spring and fall Homeschool Day programs. Through these broad and wide-ranging explorations, students in school groups were 30% more likely to remember learning about slavery and the lives of enslaved people than youth visiting Mount Vernon with their families.
Initially launched in the fall of 2019 at the George Washington Presidential Library, the Situation Room Experience: Washington’s Cabinet, is an immersive live-action role-play game. During the first full semester of bookings for the game in 2022, 616 students from 13 schools were hosted. Each player was cast as a member of Washington’s presidential cabinet, the Senate, the Press, or as a diplomatic representative, and together they tried to resolve the foreign and domestic crises that plagued George Washington’s second term as the nation’s first president. The outcome of the game is not static, and the gameplay determines whether or not the young fragile nation survives, and if so, who is
elected as the second President of the United States. After 75 minutes of immersive gameplay, students emerged with a newfound respect for the difficulties of governing and the immense pressure on George Washington to lead with integrity and purpose.
Many students who played the Situation Room game arrived at Mount Vernon for a full day of leadership training through the Ammerman Student Leadership Program. Through this student program, and our Student Advisory Board, Mount Vernon staff engaged students in meaningful conversations about what leadership looks like from their perspective. These conversations provided us important insight into what resonates with students and the challenges they face in the 21st-century world, and informed the creation of materials and resources for the classroom.
For the second year, we were honored to award the Mount Vernon Prize for Excellence in Civics and History in honor of Dr. Jennifer London to two outstanding young leaders. Each student used Washington’s biography

to inspire and inform their community and peers. Mariya Koval, an exchange student in Wisconsin, spoke at local patriotic societies and used Washington’s biography as an inspiring narrative to motivate concern and support for the war in her home country of Ukraine. Anthony Labib shared the lesser-known story of Washington’s support for the smallpox vaccine in response to increased conversations about vaccines. These important awards contributed to our understanding of how Washington’s biography resonates with young people today.
The digital pivot Mount Vernon made in 2020 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic led to increased connections with students unable to come here on a field trip. We virtually reached almost 1,000 additional students, 522 of whom were from Title 1 schools, through our direct-to-classroom programs, where one staff member talked to one classroom. To achieve a wider reach, we also offered one-tomany digital programs where multiple classrooms enrolled at once, including four to celebrate Washington’s birthday and four to commemorate Thanksgiving. More than 750 classrooms participated in these programs, with multiple students from each classroom joining the discussions.
“Not only for his role in creating and leading the fledgling nation, but also for his leadership style, political beliefs, and revolutionary vision for the United States of America, George Washington is one of the most important characters in American history. President Washington established standards for everything from political influence to military strategy to economic policy.”

The Return of Guests
There is a mystique about Mount Vernon, an unseen force that beckons people to visit. Washington’s letter to his mother from 1787 demonstrates that Mount Vernon’s halls were always full. For 18th-century visitors, a trip to Mount Vernon required great effort over poor roads and great distances. The allure of Mount Vernon was enough for those intrepid few brave enough to overcome those challenges. For them, the chance to see the great man, speak with him, and see his estate was worth the effort. What motivated them to make this pilgrimage? It wasn’t anything mysterious; it was George Washington. Washington’s unquestioned celebrity meant his home became a national symbol, a place of discourse on politics, diplomacy, the arts, agriculture, and the economy. Everyone from future presidents, inventors, dignitaries from Europe, or simple American travelers
stopped to seek advice or approval or to peek behind the curtain of what life was like for their hero. The Washingtons faced this burden on their privacy with grace, opening their home and hospitality to friends and strangers alike. It was so common to have guests that their absence was a point of note in a 1797 letter from Washington to his secretary, Tobias Lear. “Unless some one pops in, unexpectedly, Mrs Washington and myself will do what I believe has not been [done] within the last twenty years by us, that is to set down to dinner by ourselves.”3
The frenetic pace of visitation did not end with Washington’s passing. Thousands came year after year to walk the grounds, roam the halls, and pay their respects. Washington’s final resting place, the New Tomb, became a national monument to America’s first citizen, keeping the flame of Washington alive. Inevitably,
time marches on. Slowly, the memory of Washington’s accomplishments morphs through the expanding fog of the past. Memories become legends. Legends become myths. Where once travelers sought inspiration at the sight or memory of Washington, a modern audience seeks inspiration by rediscovering what made Washington so revered.
For more than 160 years, the MVLA has helped countless millions discover the real George Washington. Their mission, to preserve and educate, inspires the current generation to follow Washington’s example of leadership while ensuring his home stands as a beacon of scholarship for countless generations to come. Through the modern era, Mount Vernon has positioned itself as one of the country’s premier museums, with more than one million visitors a year.
TEACHING AMERICA’S STORY
26
The Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association
The global pandemic of 2020 brought unprecedented challenges. Mount Vernon, just like Washington, ventured into “untrodden ground” when it closed its doors to the public. One million visitors in 2019 shrank to 240,000 in 2020, doubling to just over 500,000 in 2021, and much like Washington and his army at Valley Forge, Mount Vernon persevered. It persevered because of institutional leadership and because, after years of the unknown, the mystique of George Washington is just as strong now as it was more than 220 years ago.
The guests are back. They are back, touring the Mansion, walking through the rooms where Washington lived. They are back recounting Washington’s incredible accomplishments. They are back, seeing demonstrations and watching history made before their eyes. They are back, experiencing the
18th century through the eyes of those who knew Washington in life. They are back, reflecting on Washington’s relevance as they take in the splendor of the estate. They are back in numbers, more than 800,000 in 2022! They are back because the guests’ desire to learn never disappeared. Fortunately, neither did Mount Vernon.
The focus for 2022 was to return to normal operations as much as possible. The “100 Days” period returned, and robust visitation from our middle school guests was solid. Historic Trades returned to the Farm Wednesday through Sunday with weekend tours at the Gristmill and Distillery. Blacksmiths plied their trade to the delight of children and adults. Character interpreters resumed their roles, moving from informal engagements on the grounds to set programming in a theatrical space.
Personalized experiences shattered expectations. Public Specialty tours generated $428,273 from 34,082 tickets sold, an increase of $116,803 and 11,194, respectively, over even pre-pandemic levels in 2019. Public and private events also had a healthy showing, capped with Mount Vernon by Candlelight, focused on Washington’s exemplary leadership during the revolutionary year 1772.
Then-President John Adams delivered the news of Washington’s death to the Senate. He said of Washington, “His example is now complete, and it will teach wisdom and virtue to magistrates, citizens, and men, not only in the present age, but in future generations as long as our history shall be read.” The remarkable return of guests to Mount Vernon proves that the present age still hungers to learn from the example of Washington, and we are willing to continue to tell that history.

Smith National Library for the Study of George Washington stands as the standard of scholarly excellence, dedicated to the preservation and exploration of the life and legacy of one of America’s most influential figures, George Washington. As the custodian of an extensive collection of primary sources and artifacts, the Library plays a vital role in advancing our understanding of Washington’s contributions to the nation’s founding and his enduring impact on American history. What sets this institution apart is its unique ability to unite leading academic fields of research under one facility, offering a comprehensive and multidisciplinary approach to studying the remarkable life of the first President of the United States. Through its unwavering commitment to excellence and collaboration, the Library continues to be a pivotal resource for scholars, educators, and the public, ensuring that Washington’s legacy remains a vibrant part of our national heritage.
One of the highlights of the year was the highly anticipated Mount Vernon Symposium, held from June 3 to June 5, 2022. This prestigious
event brought together leading gardeners, historians, horticulturists, archaeologists, and preservationists from around the world as they embarked on a collective journey to reconsider the importance of gardening, landscapes, and design in early America. Through stimulating presentations and thought-provoking discussions, participants explored the profound impact of these elements on the nation’s cultural and historical identity during George Washington’s era.
The Washington Library conducted its third international conference in 2022. The conference, titled “Spain and the Global Struggle for United States Independence,” facilitated the convergence of historians from both sides of the Atlantic, offering a comprehensive examination of the role of Spain in the wars for empire, contests for territory, and the Enlightenment-era political ideas that profoundly shaped the 18th century. The conference also shed light on Spain’s crucial decision to declare war on Great Britain in 1779, underscoring the significant legacy of this event. Moreover, the discussions extended beyond the American Revolution, delving into
the ongoing diplomatic and cultural relationships between Spain and the United States, from the presidency of George Washington to the present day. The event was held as part of Mount Vernon’s Travel Program and paired with exclusive access to cultural sites around the country for those in attendance.
The Washington Library continues to be on the forefront of digital creation. This year, through the work of the Center for Digital History, the Library was thrilled to announce the release of our podcast series, “Intertwined: The Enslaved Community at George Washington’s Mount Vernon.” This eight-part series delves into the lives and labors of the more than 577 individuals enslaved by George and Martha Washington at Mount Vernon. Through captivating biographies of notable figures such as Sambo Anderson, Davy Gray, William Lee, Kate, Ona Judge, Nancy Carter Quander, Edmund Parker, Caroline Branham, and the Washingtons themselves, this podcast serves as a poignant exploration of the enslaved community’s experiences. It allows us to better understand the historical

realities of slavery at Mount Vernon and reflect on how we interpret and share this complex history at our historic site today.
To enhance accessibility and ease of use, we have established a new online card catalog. This innovative tool simplifies the process of finding relevant resources and elements within our vast collection. With improved search functionalities, researchers, scholars, and visitors alike can now navigate our Library more efficiently, enabling them to delve deeper into the wealth of knowledge and primary sources available.
Expanding the Washington Library’s collection to make more materials available to researchers is of paramount importance in advancing our understanding of George Washington and his role in shaping American history. The past year witnessed significant strides in this regard, as we actively sought to enrich our holdings with additional duplicate editions and acquire new letters and manuscripts that offer fresh perspectives on Washington and the operations at Mount Vernon. By broadening the range of available
resources, we create opportunities for researchers to delve deeper into the intricacies of Washington’s life and times, fostering a more comprehensive understanding of his leadership, values, and contributions. These newly acquired materials not only shed new light on Washington as an individual but also provide invaluable insights into the workings of his estate at Mount Vernon. They serve as invaluable primary sources that enable scholars to reevaluate existing narratives, challenge assumptions, and uncover untold stories, ultimately enriching our collective knowledge of this pivotal period in American history. By making these materials accessible to researchers and the public, the Washington Library continues to foster a vibrant intellectual community that contributes to the ongoing exploration of George Washington’s life and the enduring significance of his legacy.
This year marked the resumption of our on-site scholarship through the Mount Vernon Research Fellows program. These esteemed fellows have played an instrumental role in advancing our understanding of colonial
America, the Revolutionary era, and the early American republic. Their diligent research and groundbreaking contributions have enriched our institution’s intellectual landscape, fostering new perspectives and insights into the history that shaped our nation. Our 2022-2023 class has brought a great diversity of new topics to the forefront of academic thought.
The mission of the George Washington Presidential Library at Mount Vernon remains steadfast in providing robust scholarship that illuminates the life and achievements of George Washington. Through rigorous research and the dissemination of scholarly works, the Library aims to equip teachers and educators with the necessary resources and insights to effectively convey the stories of George Washington to their students. By nurturing a deep understanding of Washington’s character and contributions, the Library empowers educators to inspire a new generation with the values and lessons embodied by the Father of Our Country.

Mount Vernon proudly presents its 5th short film, George Washington and the Pursuit of Religious Freedom, an extraordinary cinematic journey into the life and legacy of America’s first president. This captivating film shines a spotlight on George Washington’s groundbreaking precedent in establishing the separation of church and state and championing the concept of religious freedom long before such rights were enshrined in the Bill of Rights.
Produced in collaboration with long-time partner Wide Awake Films, the film’s captivating visuals were primarily shot in Newport, Rhode Island, with support from the Newport Historical Society and the Touro Synagogue, lending authenticity to the historical narrative.
Premiering at the prestigious 92Y in New York City, with the esteemed David Rubenstein as host, the film has since captivated audiences nationwide through several regional premieres. Its message of tolerance, freedom of conscience, and the historical significance of George Washington’s contributions continue to inspire viewers of all ages.
To ensure its accessibility to a wider audience, George Washington and the Pursuit of Religious Freedom can be enjoyed for free on YouTube. Moreover, it is available for download on popular platforms like iTunes and Google Play, allowing individuals to immerse themselves in the film’s compelling narrative at their convenience.

These resources empower educators to incorporate the film’s insights into classrooms nationwide, ensuring that George Washington’s timeless vision for religious freedom reaches young hearts and minds.
The creation of this cinematic masterpiece was made possible by a generous donation from Irv and Nancy Chase, whose philanthropy continues to make a profound impact on preserving historical narratives for future generations.

Financial Highlights
George Washington valued fiscal responsibility in all his business ventures. The MVLA carries on this timeless tradition of responsible spending and engages in robust fundraising. We are proud to have spent 84 cents of every dollar received directly on programs connected to our mission, including historic preservation and collections initiatives, educational outreach efforts, and enhancements to the guest experience.
During the year, we continued to experience a significant reduction in operating revenue due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and high inflation created a challenging business environment. Despite these challenges, we allocated just 9% of the funds we raised to inspire generous citizens to support our mission. Thanks to our conservative financial management, our administrative costs accounted for only 7% of our total expenditures. Our 2022 audited financial statements are available at mountvernon.org/about or by request from our Finance Department.

Ann Pamela Cunningham Society
Members of the Ann Pamela Cunningham Society have remembered Mount Vernon in their estate plans or provided for a planned gift, such as a bequest in their will or establishing a charitable annuity. The Society’s namesake, Miss Cunningham, founded the MVLA in 1853 and tirelessly gathered support from across America to rescue George Washington’s home and ensure his legacy endures.

The support of the many generous donors listed on these pages is deeply appreciated by the MVLA, as is the support of the thousands more who made gifts of less than $500. Farewell Address
To The Council of the Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association of June, 1874:
LADIES:
It was my intention as well as my duty to have met you at this time, and conformed in person to the legal requisition accompanying a resignation so important as mine, but Providence does not permit.
I am at present not only unequal to such a journey, but the serious state of my health requires me, instead of turning my face towards the “spot” for which, since 1853, I have lived, labored and almost died, to seek the best medical skill, with the hope of prolonging, if possible, a life yet needed to finish what I began so many long years ago. One more duty is before me—one I regard as important—though circumstances have combined to make it now a very sad one.
It would have been a pleasure to have met, once more, those who have labored with me in our vineyard from the “early hour,” though now their numbers are so few; those who appreciated my work; its motives, its sacrifices; whether they were of the “early” or “eleventh” hour sister laborers; and to have taken a kindly farewell of all whose hearts have been, like my own, single unto their patriotic work—but it is not to be.
I will not yet, however, utterly resign the hope that I may be permitted to reappear among you some day, with my last self-imposed task performed; ready to say, “Now let thy servant depart in peace.”
But in parting, I feel it due to you as to me; to the responsibilities I solemnly assumed, which were so important in their results; to those you have taken upon yourselves, to say a few words as to those responsibilities, or duties laid down in the beginning of our work—not to be lightly regarded, for they were pledges to future generations as well as to ours. The minds and hearts which conceived the rescue of the Home of Washington; of the completion of a worthy “tribute” to public integrity, private virtue; an expression of the gratitude due and felt by a country destined to act such an important part in the drama of the world; conceived it with all the reverence felt in older regions for the resting places of their honored dead; where only pious hands are permitted to be in “charge,” so as to have them carried down to admiring ages in the same condition as when left.
Such was the pledge made to the American heart when an appeal was made to it to save the Home and Tomb of Washington, of the Father of his Country, from all changes, whether by law or desecration. Such, to the last owner of Mt. Vernon, ere he was willing to permit it to pass from his hands. Such to the Legislature of his mother State, ere she gave us legal rights over it. Such we are bound to keep. Our honor is concerned, as well as our intelligence and legal obligations. The mansion, and the grounds around it, should be religiously guarded from changes—should be kept as Washington left them.
Ladies, the Home of Washington is in your charge. See to it that you keep it the Home of Washington! Let no irreverent hand change it; no vandal hands desecrate with the fingers of—progress! Those who go to the Home in which he lived and died, wish to see in what he lived and died! Let one spot in this grand country of ours be saved from “change!” Upon you rests this duty.
When the Centennial comes, bringing with it its thousands from the ends of the earth, to whom the Home of Washington will be the place of places in our country, let them see that, though we slay our forests, remove our dead, pull down our churches, remove from home to home till the “hearthstone” seems to have no resting place in America; let them see that we do know how to care for the Home of our Hero! Farewell!
Ladies, I return to your hands the office held—so long under another name—since December 2d, 1853.
Respectfully,
Ann Pamela Cunningham
