In the 160 years since the Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association (MVLA) purchased Mount Vernon from the Washington family, the Association, along with our great nation, has experienced many challenging times. Our steadfast leadership, combined with a strong sense of mission, has allowed Mount Vernon to not only endure, but to emerge stronger, more insightful, and more purposeful in each era.
One of the earliest challenges the MVLA faced was during the Civil War. Mount Vernon was physically within miles of both the Union and Confederate fronts, and steamboat travel all along the Potomac was blocked. The Ladies were undaunted, and in recognition that George Washington was the father of the entire Union, they secured guarantees from both armies that Mount Vernon and Washington’s Tomb were hallowed ground and neutral territory. They adjusted budgets and adapted to years of financial hardship in the war’s aftermath. During both World Wars and the 1918 Influenza Pandemic, this resiliency and conservative financial stewardship, as well as the MVLA’s ability to adapt to change, have always ensured that Mount Vernon will remain for future generations.
The Covid-19 pandemic has been no different. Mount Vernon responsibly closed its doors to the public when the first cases were reported in our area. In our busiest season, when Mount Vernon normally would see 75 percent of our operating revenue from ticket sales, food, and retail, the MVLA, in concert with Doug Bradburn and Mount Vernon staff, smartly restructured our operations.
Expenses were reduced and projects deferred, and a Mount Vernon revenue working group was established to help innovate and adapt to the pandemic. Perhaps of even greater impact has been the level of support from our donors and fellow Americans. We have seen record giving, memberships have increased, and we have received countless letters of support from individuals across the country. We have steadied our finances and prudently borrowed funds in the short term with a sound repayment plan, and throughout the pandemic, continued our long-standing practice of not seeking government funds.
The availability of widespread vaccinations is a hopeful harbinger of better days for Mount Vernon, as it is for all of America. Since reopening our doors last June, we have seen a steady increase in visitors. The beauty and tranquility of the expansive estate, gardens, and the Mansion have allowed for a safe and delightful excursion for many families. We are very optimistic that our visitation will return to pre-pandemic levels during 2022, and we expect Mount Vernon to have a sound financial operating plan and be in a position to continue with so many important and mission-driven projects.
As you read of the truly wonderful activities and accomplishments in this year’s annual report, I want to share my profound thanks for your unwavering support and simple friendship. Regardless of the times, our nation has always looked to George Washington’s utterly unique example of leadership and humility, and his example of the finest presidential comportment. Thanks to your generous support, the MVLA will continue throughout the coming decades to further its abiding mission of preservation and education and to protect Mount Vernon as a special place for generations to come.

At a time of crisis in the United States and the world, the mission of Mount Vernon is as important as it has ever been. The stories of our nation’s ability to persevere under the most severe tests are all a part of this place, from the Revolutionary War, to the constitutional crisis, the Civil War, two World Wars, the Great Depression, global pandemics, and the many political storms of our wild democracy. Mount Vernon stands as an icon and a touchstone of American identity. We are the lighthouse in the storm, as the home of the father our country, the first leader of our great experiment in self-government, always reminding the nation where we came from and who we can be together.
We are in an age in which information is in everyone’s hands, yet it has never been more vital for organizations like the Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association to be a trusted, authoritative voice the public can rely on. The Covid-19 pandemic caused Mount Vernon to close its gates to the public for a period of 99 days. This is the longest Mount Vernon was closed since the Civil War. Yet daily, we welcomed thousands of guests virtually. They came seeking answers, facts, and our nation’s history and found the digital resources we have been developing aggressively since the opening of the Washington Library in 2013.
We responded to the needs of teachers and parents struggling for things to do in their living room classrooms. Within three days after closure, Mount Vernon hosted daily virtual events on YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter, where our visitors could ask our staff questions on everything regarding George Washington, his estate, and our nation’s founding. The George Washington Teacher Institute expanded professional development to teachers nationwide and adapted lesson plans and resources to accommodate remote learning. Thousands of teachers received direct help from staff members of Mount Vernon, and tens of thousands more accessed our resources.
Simultaneously, Mount Vernon adapted to the changing world. We developed a reopening plan that allowed visitors to return to the estate in time for our nation’s 244th birthday. We found a way to have a safe fireworks display with hundreds of guests to celebrate our hard-won independence. We adapted our events schedule to safely host our fall and winter events, and we developed members-only virtual events. The Mount Vernon Inn launched online ordering and meals to go. And the MVLA donated personal protective equipment, snacks, meals, and produce from the gardens to first responders and families in need.
Throughout all the struggles this year, our nation has endured. George Washington and the founders sought to form a “more perfect union,” but they always knew it would be in future generations’ hands to ensure it thrived. As Washington noted in one of my favorite letters, which he sent at the close of the Revolutionary War, our foundation as a nation was “not laid in the gloomy age of Ignorance and Superstition, but at an epoch when the rights of mankind were better understood and more clearly defined, than at any former period.” And so, he noted, if our “citizens should not be completely free and happy, the fault will be entirely their own.” The point of our independence was the ability to choose our future, and we still, thanks to his life’s work, are part of that great experiment. To make sure we do not take our freedom for granted, we need to educate citizens. The leadership of George Washington is more important than ever. Mount Vernon’s adaptation during the pandemic only serves to strengthen us as an institution and makes our obligation to the nation to teach about George Washington ever more impactful.
As you look through this year’s report, you will see an organization that gained ground—a chronicle of success, impact, relevance, and strength, and a tale that would not be possible without the generosity of supporters like you. I thank you for helping us preserve this place to continue to tell the stories of Washington so that he will forever remain first in the hearts of Americans.

Central Passage
Yellow Room
North Garden House
Work in Progress
The autumn of 2020 saw Mount Vernon’s Central Passage dramatically transformed by an elegant neoclassical wallpaper, with medallion portraits, graceful female statuettes, and flowerfilled vases.
Several clues led to this striking addition. We know from George Washington’s records that he hung wallpaper in most rooms of the Mansion that had unpaneled, plaster walls. A small fragment of wallpaper found in this room in the 1890s displayed a curving tendril—a distinctive feature of neoclassical arabesque patterns popular in the late 18th century, inspired by the decoration of ancient Roman wall murals, and popular for hallways in the 1790s. This particular pattern reproduces a documented paper purchased in 1794 from the same Philadelphia supplier that Washington patronized three years later.
The original paper, from the John Imlay house in Allentown, New Jersey, is now at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The reproduction pattern was created by Adelphi Paper Hangings, and Connoisseur Society member and decorative arts scholar Pauline Metcalf assisted with research. Funding was generously provided by The Felicia Fund.
The wallpaper installation continues a multiyear room restoration that began with structural reinforcement of the staircase in 2015. In 2018, the architecture team returned the painted woodwork to its original 1799 stone color, based on updated paint analysis, and the curatorial team oversaw restoration of the original gilded vitrine containing the key to the Bastille. The project will culminate in 2021 with period chairs, small figures, and gilt-framed pictures replicating the prints listed in Washington’s inventory.
The Central Passage was an important space for the Washington family, used not only to greet guests, but also for entertaining and dancing. The room is bookended by two doors opening to the west and east fronts of the Mansion, providing a cool breeze off the Potomac River in summer. Guests would have been greeted by Frank Lee, the enslaved butler and brother to William Lee, George Washington’s enslaved valet who was by his side throughout the Revolutionary War.
Originally, the room would have been lined with 14 mahogany side chairs, where visitors awaiting an audience with George Washington might have been seated. These are not present in the space now due to constraints with interpretation. Today, visitors to the space can imagine the guests who sat in this very room and the conversations they had through the interpretation of the space.
In 2020, the closure of the estate for several months and limited reopening of the Mansion provided an unexpected opportunity for Mount Vernon’s preservation and curatorial staff to advance the refurbishment of the second-floor bedroom known to the Washingtons as the Yellow Room.
Fragments of the original bed and its hangings, Washington’s probate inventory, purchase records, and even the name of the room provided curators with clues to the room’s 1799 appearance. George and Martha Washington’s references to this as the “Yellow Room” indicated the color of upholstery defining the space. The high values assigned in George Washington’s probate inventory identified the bed and furnishings as the finest from any of the home’s bedrooms, heading the list of guest accommodations. Additional evidence revealed that the room’s contents came together during Mansion renovations of 1797, following the Washingtons’ second retirement.
A reproduction bedstead draped with yellow damask takes center stage in the room, crowned with a damask-covered, carved cornice. This impressive display is a painstaking re-creation of the most valuable bed ensemble owned by the Washingtons, originally acquired by George Washington from London in 1758, as he was expanding the Mansion and making a bid to establish himself as a member of the ruling gentry class in colonial Virginia. The surviving shipping invoice describes in detail the bed and the accompanying suite of furniture, which included window curtains, Gothic-back mahogany chairs, and a bureau dressing table. Portions of the original bedstead’s carved mahogany footposts survive, as well as small fragments of the yellow silk and wool damask, which suggested the brilliance and quality of the original upholstery. These documents and artifacts guided the recreation by expert craftspeople, Harrison Higgins of Richmond and Natalie Larson of Williamsburg, Virginia.
The resplendent yellow damask drapery is set off by a stately neoclassical striped wallpaper, a reproduction of the fashionable grisaille (gray-scale designs) on yellow paper late 18th–century households occasionally paired with yellow damask suites. Period, carved Gothic-back chairs and a sinuous serpentine dressing table represent other elements of the 1758 suite, while a period basin stand and a reproduction Persian-style carpet stand as furnishings acquired by the Washingtons in 1774 from the neighboring Fairfax family mansion, Belvoir. Reproductions of four landscape prints, purchased by the Washingtons in the 1790s, complete the elegant arrangement, a testimony to the 40-year evolution of Mount Vernon’s interiors and the hospitality the Washingtons offered their most esteemed guests.
The refurbishment of the Yellow Room was supported by the Connoisseur Society; The Brown Foundation, Inc.; Jim and Jo Carol Porter; the George L. Shields Foundation, Inc.; Russell B. Adams, Jr.; and hundreds of donors from across the country.
In mid-summer 2020, work was completed on the North Garden House. Located in the upper garden, this small octagonal structure was built right after the Revolutionary War. Its primary function was to store tools and seeds, but it also briefly served as a schoolhouse for Washington’s step-grandchildren, Nelly and Washy Custis.
The restoration project presented a complex challenge to our architectural preservation team. While the building’s 18th-century framing survived, there was a pronounced level of deterioration throughout the structure. Adding to the challenge, the interior plaster pre-dated the Civil War and contained signatures of 19thcentury visitors. The team painstakingly replaced deteriorated framing members, all while preserving the integrity of the interior plaster. Final efforts included work on the siding and new cypress shingles to ensure the building is weather-tight to prevent future damage.
The restoration of the North Garden House was generously supported by an anonymous foundation; the Marietta McNeill Morgan & Samuel Tate Morgan, Jr. Trust; the Roller-Bottimore Foundation; the George L. Shields Foundation, Inc.; the Richard and Caroline T. Gwathmey Memorial Trust; and the Christine and Jaime Yordán Foundation.
Mount Vernon’s superb collection of Washington textiles now has a new home, thanks to a generous bequest from the estate of Heather Karen Hunt. In 2020, curatorial and collections management staff re-installed more than 700 objects—the largest surviving group of original Washington clothing, needlework, lace, furnishing textiles, jewelry, and portrait miniatures, as well as commemorative and study collection textiles—into new state-of-the art storage cabinets. These cabinets feature custom-size shelves and drawers designed to maximize capacity within the storeroom and are tailored to accommodate the particular needs of our holdings—from George Washington’s coats, to Martha Washington’s eight-foot-square bed quilts, to hundreds of small cuttings taken from their clothing as souvenirs. One cabinet also features the Washington family jewelry and miniatures, allowing behind-the-scenes guests and researchers the opportunity to view these distinctive accessories in proximity to the clothing they originally adorned.
Installation of these storage units provides the essential foundation for an ongoing strategic program to both preserve and make more accessible these highly personal and evocative Washington items. The inherent fragility of textiles and, in some cases, their size or form, necessitates special handling, custom storage, and carefully controlled conditions to support their use in exhibitions and research. Future phases of this program will create storage mounts to fit precisely to the dimensions of each object and will provide conservation treatments and scientific analysis as needed. Ultimately, advancing the care of and research into the Washington textiles will enhance our understanding of not only the Washingtons, but also the broader context of society, politics, and trade in America and the world at the time of our nation’s founding.

As the country grappled with the Covid-19 pandemic, cultural institutions worldwide saw their doors close to the public. Institutions scrambled to create digital offerings to remain relevant and continue their mission.
With the support of generous donors, the Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association had already been making investments in digital education for seven years. The Mount Vernon website is accessed annually by more than 8 million guests. Our virtual tour and Be Washington interactives have been vital components in classrooms around the country, and we were regularly streaming live events on our Facebook and YouTube channels.
When Mount Vernon closed its doors to the public for 99 days, the longest since the Civil War, our teams quickly expanded our digital programming. We began hosting daily livestreams from inside the Mansion, the museum, and the estate. We moved our symposiums, book talks, and lectures to virtual events. Our professional staff created workshops on a wide array of topics, from gardening to leadership, and we cultivated and grew a national membership audience through our exclusive members-only programming.
In total, Mount Vernon has hosted more than 153 virtual events since March 2020. We expanded our distribution to include Twitter and LinkedIn. We pioneered new structures for interactive lectures, allowing us to ask the audience questions and display them on the stream. This increased access, and participation now regularly sees hundreds of people tuning in live and thousands of people watching the event on-demand after the event has concluded.
The lessons learned in 2020 are being adapted and applied to all future events held at Mount Vernon. Our future hybrid event model will allow members from around the country and world to tune in to every public event, lecture, and symposium. Also, we will continue to hold digital-only events, allowing us to host speakers more easily from around the world.
Today, Mount Vernon reaches more people digitally than we can accommodate in person at any theater at the estate. The ability and experience gained this past year will have a long-lasting impact on our education mission to share the life and legacy of George Washington with all Americans.
For more than 20 years, the George Washington Teacher Institute has provided teachers the resources and materials they need to educate their students about George Washington’s legacy, the founding era, and the nation’s struggles with slavery. In most years, teachers from around the country attend week-long immersive sessions at Mount Vernon, interacting with its staff and collections. The Covid-19 pandemic required Mount Vernon to adapt to remote learning opportunities. While we were disappointed not to have teachers visit in person, the result was programming attended by a much wider audience of educators.
Each program offered in 2020 was rooted in the successful foundations of our George Washington Teacher Institute on-site programs (deep content, practical classroom application, and immersive historical experiences). Content-rich lectures were enhanced with robust Q&A sessions in video conferencing chats. Primary sources, normally paired with direct access to the Mount Vernon estate, were paired with guided virtual tours. Mount Vernon’s K-12 education team created a variety of digital programs to help teachers find resources and increase their own content knowledge of the 18th-century world of George Washington. Seven program series were hosted between March and December, ranging from monthly hour-long happy hours, to an in-depth three-day symposium focused on Slavery in George Washington’s World, to multiweek lecture series with leading scholars. Each of these programs allowed our staff to bring content, compassion, and resources directly to more than 900 educators from 47 states, as well as Puerto Rico and Washington, DC.
We heard from teachers that they also needed classroom resources to directly engage their students with our content and experts. Existing online educational resources developed over the last five years, like Be Washington and the virtual tour of the estate, were highlighted on a new Online Learning web page built for educators and on an Online Activities for Kids web page for families. We also launched a weekly livestream to explore teaching with Mount Vernon resources that aired on Mount Vernon’s social media channels as “Teaching Tuesdays” from March through June and reached more than 110,000 viewers.
In addition, we pivoted our on-site tours to directly support student learning on virtual field trips. More than 100 distance learning programs brought Mount Vernon into the homes and classrooms of more than 2,700 students across the country. They explored George Washington’s life, leadership, and complex legacies using the virtual tour and rich primary sources with topnotch student-focused facilitation. Teachers could trust Mount Vernon with their valued in-person virtual class time.
As a leading national historic site, Mount Vernon ensures that guests connect to quality and inspiring scholarship about George Washington and the world in which he lived. To enrich this experience, in 2020, Mount Vernon further developed its resources and interpretation to address enslavement of persons at the estate in a meaningful, relevant, and visible manner.
This past year was Brenda Parker’s first full one in the new role of African American interpretation and special projects coordinator. She works closely with K. Allison Wickens, the vice president for education and guest services, to identify and strengthen our work interpreting enslavement by creating inclusive learning experiences and conducting outreach to individuals whose ancestors were enslaved at Mount Vernon. Parker’s rich and deep knowledge of the lives of enslaved people on the estate has led to the creation of new program models and training sessions, as well as network building, and has inspired future project planning.
Parker’s innovative program strategies extend individual historical stories beyond bondage and have broadened our interpretations to include the legacies of life after enslavement. This connects our interpretation of enslavement with both tragedy and hope. Her museum theater piece, “Freedom Skies,” interprets the historic moment on January 1, 1801, when Washington’s will was put into effect by Martha Washington. Almost half of the enslaved community at Mount Vernon received their freedom, causing complex mixtures of joy and loss. Similarly, Parker’s livestream series with members of the descendant community helps connect Mount Vernon’s 18th-century history to people today. Each session explores how the story of hope unfolds over generations.
Parker’s work is visible in daily estate programming, where she continues her interpretation of Caroline Branham and Priscilla for our guests. This work allows visitors a deeply personal glimpse into the lives of those enslaved at Mount Vernon.
But her most enduring work may be behind the scenes. In 2020, she consulted with renowned authors and scholars, education networks, and her colleagues at Mount Vernon, offering reviews and feedback on interpreting African American history. With Covid-19 restrictions on-site, Parker worked with community partner Black Women United for Action to hold the annual Enslaved Memorial Ceremony virtually for the first time and expanded its reach nationwide to a record number of attendees. Continuing this work, in the early months of 2021, we expanded outreach to descendant communities with a quarterly email, genealogy workshops, and youth and family programs.
Mount Vernon continues to foster academic research on George Washington and the founding era. Now in its nineth year, the Research Fellowships program offers long- and short-term fellowships for scholars. This program provides funding and living space at the Fred W. Smith National Library for the Study of George Washington. Fellows gain access to the Library’s collections and interact with Mount Vernon staff to advance their academic pursuits.

On October 8, the 19th annual Spirit of Mount Vernon brought guests from the Washington, DC, corporate and government affairs community to the estate for a socially distanced celebration on the east lawn that included an online auction.
In a challenging year for the estate and the country, Mount Vernon’s largest fundraising event topped last year’s sponsorship and individual contribution support, with more than 20 new organizations participating and more than double the number of gold sponsorships. The event benefited Mount Vernon’s education and preservation mission.

George Washington valued fiscal responsibility in all his business ventures. The Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association carries on this timeless tradition of responsible spending and engages in robust fundraising.
We are proud to have spent 82 cents of every dollar received directly on programs connected to our mission, including historic preservation and collections initiatives, educational outreach efforts, and enhancements to the guest experience.
Your contributions are put to work. Although the costs of doing business continue to rise, in 2020 we allocated just 9 percent of the funds we raise to inspire more generous citizens to support our mission. Thanks to our conservative financial management, our administrative costs accounted for a mere 9 percent of our total expenditures.
Our 2020 audited financial statements are available at mountvernon.org/about or by request from our Finance Department.

Peter Family Collection
We are thrilled to report that in 2020 Mount Vernon had the exciting opportunity to purchase the finest privately owned collection of original Washington artifacts—carefully stewarded by Martha Washington’s namesake granddaughter, Martha (Patty) Parke Custis Peter of Tudor Place in Georgetown, and then by generations of her descendants. The Peter Family Collection contains nearly 100 remarkable items, highlighted by such treasures as Martha’s own gold, enamel, and diamond-studded watch and her French chair; several pieces of presidential china; rare examples of 18th-century glassware; neoclassical silver tea wares; the documented silver and coral baby’s rattle given by Martha Washington to her first great-grandchild; the child’s dressing table sent to the Washingtons by the Marquise de Lafayette; and a unique portrait plaque depicting General Washington in porcelain, given to the president on his 1790 tour of the southern states. This unparalleled assemblage promises a transformational impact on our collection, scholarship, and interpretation of life at George and Martha Washington’s Mount Vernon. As this landmark opportunity arose late in 2020, fundraising continues in 2021. We look forward to publishing a full record of the collection and its supporters in the 2021 Annual Report. Many items will be featured in the reinstalled Donald W. Reynolds Museum galleries in February 2022.

All contributions to Mount Vernon are tax-deductible under the limits of the law. The support of the many generous donors listed on these pages is deeply appreciated by the Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association, as is the support of the thousands more who made gifts of less than $500. Please note that these lists represent a donor’s total giving in 2020 and do not include purchases of tickets or event donations. Although every effort has been made to include all donors who support Mount Vernon with gifts of $500 or more, omissions and errors occasionally occur. We reserve the right to edit listings to comply with our organizational style guide. We would appreciate corrections and additions forwarded to the Senior Vice President for Development, Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association, P.O. Box 110, Mount Vernon, VA 22121.
Mount Vernon has a team of approximately 275 active volunteers. In 2020, 198 volunteers logged in a total of 8,421 hours. To The Council of the Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association of June, 1874:
LADIES:
It was my intention as well as my duty to have met you at this time, and conformed in person to the legal requisition accompanying a resignation so important as mine, but Providence does not permit.
I am at present not only unequal to such a journey, but the serious state of my health requires me, instead of turning my face towards the “spot” for which, since 1853, I have lived, labored and almost died, to seek the best medical skill, with the hope of prolonging, if possible, a life yet needed to finish what I began so many long years ago. One more duty is before me—one I regard as important— though circumstances have combined to make it now a very sad one.
It would have been a pleasure to have met, once more, those who have labored with me in our vineyard from the “early hour,” though now their numbers are so few; those who appreciated my work; its motives, its sacrifices; whether they were of the “early” or “eleventh” hour sister laborers; and to have taken a kindly farewell of all whose hearts have been, like my own, single unto their patriotic work—but it is not to be.
I will not yet, however, utterly resign the hope that I may be permitted to reappear among you some day, with my last self-imposed task performed; ready to say, “Now let thy servant depart in peace.”
But in parting, I feel it due to you as to me; to the responsibilities I solemnly assumed, which were so important in their results; to those you have taken upon yourselves, to say a few words as to those responsibilities, or duties laid down in the beginning of our work—not to be lightly regarded, for they were pledges to future generations as well as to ours. The minds and hearts which conceived the rescue of the Home of Washington; of the completion of a worthy “tribute” to public integrity, private virtue; an expression of the gratitude due and felt by a country destined to act such an important part in the drama of the world; conceived it with all the reverence felt in older regions for the resting places of their honored dead; where only pious hands are permitted to be in “charge,” so as to have them carried down to admiring ages in the same condition as when left.
Such was the pledge made to the American heart when an appeal was made to it to save the Home and Tomb of Washington, of the Father of his Country, from all changes, whether by law or desecration. Such, to the last owner of Mt. Vernon, ere he was willing to permit it to pass from his hands. Such to the Legislature of his mother State, ere she gave us legal rights over it. Such we are bound to keep. Our honor is concerned, as well as our intelligence and legal obligations. The mansion, and the grounds around it, should be religiously guarded from changes—should be kept as Washington left them.
Ladies, the Home of Washington is in your charge. See to it that you keep it the Home of Washington! Let no irreverent hand change it; no vandal hands desecrate with the fingers of—progress! Those who go to the Home in which he lived and died, wish to see in what he lived and died! Let one spot in this grand country of ours be saved from “change!” Upon you rests this duty.
When the Centennial comes, bringing with it its thousands from the ends of the earth, to whom the Home of Washington will be the place of places in our country, let them see that, though we slay our forests, remove our dead, pull down our churches, remove from home to home till the “hearthstone” seems to have no resting place in America; let them see that we do know how to care for the Home of our Hero! Farewell!
Ladies, I return to your hands the office held— so long under another name—since December 2d, 1853.
Respectfully,
Ann Pamela Cunningham
