Report of the President

I

t is truly an honor to serve as President of The George Washington Masonic National Memorial Association and a pleasure to serve with our outstanding Board of Directors.

On behalf of the Memorial Association, I extend our thanks for your support of the Memorial during this past year.

The Memorial Association has made significant progress this year as it continues its mission: “To inspire humanity through education to emulate and promote the virtues, character and vision of George Washington, the Man, the Mason and Father of our Country.” This past year we continued the work of repairing and restoring the Memorial to its original intended state.

The Memorial is an internationally recognized landmark, and it must remain as the shining beacon on the hill commemorating and reverencing the Great Man, Illustrious Brother George Washington. Without the efforts and examples of Washington we would not have this great country that we are honored to live in.

This year, work on the exterior of the Memorial tower continued and significant progress was made on the fifth through seventh levels. Also, this year some unplanned but necessary interior restoration was completed. During an inspection by the Board of Directors, we discovered that the mural on the south wall of Memorial Hall was bulging in the middle and the wall behind it was pushing against and tearing the painting. This mural depicts the most significant Masonic event in the history of our country, the Laying of the United States Capital Cornerstone by George Washington in 1793. Work began with the removal of the mural and the complete rebuilding of the interior wall behind it. Restoration of the painting has been completed and it will be reinstalled in time for our Washington Birthday Gala in February. We invite you to view the mural on your next visit to the Memorial.

We also established and are using committees to expand the opportunities available to the Directors of the Board to become more involved in the governance of the Memorial Association. The Board also fully endorsed the launching of The Landmark Century Campaign, a Capital Campaign to raise funds to continue and complete the restoration of the Memorial.

I want to congratulate and thank our Memorial Staff for the exemplary work they do every day to make sure that the image the Memorial presents to the public honors the memory of the Great Man. It is our responsibility to provide the Staff with the monetary support that allows them to continue their work responsibly and efficiently.

I extend our thanks to all of you that supported the Memorial in the past, and those of you that will continue to support the Memorial in the years to come. Together we can continue to positively impact our communities and our world, reminding them to always remember – George Washington, the Man, the Mason, and the Father of our Country.

REPORT OF THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

M

any tributes and eulogies have been written about Washington. The following was written by William E. Channing (April 7, 1780–October 2, 1842), Minister of the Federal Street Church in Boston, Massachusetts, 1803–1842. “To him belonged the proud distinction of being the leader in a revolution, without awakening one doubt or solicitude, as to the spotless purity of his purpose. His was the glory of being the brightest manifestation of the spirit which reigned in this country; and in his way he became a source of energy, a bond of union, the centre of an enlightened people’s grateful reverence, the Father of His Country, but not its Saviour. A people which wants a Saviour, which does not possess an earnest and pledge of freedom in its own heart, is not yet ready to be free.” This is a remarkable and accurate statement.

George Washington was the essential man of the Revolution and of his time, without him we would not have this wonderful country that we are blessed to live in. In this time of divisiveness, disharmony and disunity, a time when diversity is celebrated and a time when unity, compassion and cooperation seem to be entirely missing, we need the example of Washington’s character and his actions more than ever.

The vision and mission of the George Washington Masonic National Memorial Association is, “To inspire humanity through education to emulate and promote the virtues, character and vision of George Washington, the Man, the Mason and Father of our Country.” A bold, aggressive and focused vision that was conceived and is being carried out by the Board of Directors and the Staff of the Memorial. This has been an outstanding year of challenges, accomplishments and inspiration. We have completed nearly one half of the restoration of this magnificent Masonic Temple conceived and constructed to ensure the everlasting memory and legacy of George Washington. We have strengthened and expanded our outreach to the Masonic and public realms more than at any time in our history. We have launched a Capital Campaign to secure the funding required to complete the restoration and preservation of the Memorial. We are working to ensure the Memorial will stand through the coming years to inspire, educate and to promote harmony and union for our citizens, guests and indeed all of humanity. George Washington inspired not only his own countrymen but the entire world, in America he was known as the Father of His Country, in the rest of the World he was known as the Father of Freedom. We could not ask for a better example and guide for our efforts. As individuals and as an organization we must do our best to act and work to sustain the Memorial as one that Washington himself would approve and be proud of.

Annual George Washington Birthday Celebration

Congress has never declared a national holiday binding in all states and each state decides its own legal holidays. However, George Washington’s Birthday is one of eleven permanent holidays established by Congress. On February 22, 1832, Congress adjourned out of respect for Washington’s memory and in commemoration of his birth. Washington’s birthday was celebrated on February 22nd until 1968 when Congress passed the Monday Holiday Law which effectively removed any chance of Washington’s Birthday being celebrated

on February 22nd since the third Monday in February cannot occur any later than February 21st. Our George Washington Birthday Celebration begins by offering free admission to all our visitors on his Birthday, February 22nd. This is followed by the George Washington Birthday Celebration which is held on the Saturday closest to his birthday.

The 2017 Gala Birthday Celebration held at the Memorial was a great success. The annual event is a confirmation of the respect and veneration Freemasonry holds for him. The celebration began with a special Wreath Laying at the Tomb of Washington. Since the creation of the Memorial Association, the Officers and members of the Memorial Association have participated in this Annual Birthday WreathLaying Ceremony at George Washington’s tomb at Mount Vernon. The ceremony has been organized and faithfully conducted by Alexandria-Washington Lodge No- 22 since Washington’s death in 1799. The George Washington Symposium was held in the afternoon.

The theme was “George Washington and the Northern Virginia Frontier, 1732 to 1775.”

Participants were: Bruce Ragsdale, Ph.D., author of A Planters’ Republic: The Search for Economic Independence in Revolutionary Virginia. Jimmie R. McClellan, Ph.D, Dean of the Liberal Arts Department at Northern Virginia Community College, and William Ferraro of the George Washington Papers Project at the University of Virginia. The evening festivities began with a champagne reception for Members of the George Washington Memorial Society in the George Washington Museum and a reception in Memorial Hall for the Birthday Celebration attendees. The attendees then enjoyed an outstanding performance in the Memorial Theater by the Leeds Banner Girls under the Direction of Michelle Nybo. The group traveled from Leeds, North Dakota to perform for the George Washington Birthday Celebration. A Gala Banquet followed in Grand Masonic Hall with appropriate toasts to Washington. The final event for the evening was the presentation of the George Washington Memorial Award to Joseph Shumard by President Robert P. Conley. Mr. Shumard gave an inspirational talk on his involvement with and his many years serving as Chairman of the City of Alexandria George Washington Birthday Celebration. A special birthday cake concluded the evening. The Annual George Washington Birthday Celebration is a way for the Memorial Association to honor the birth, life and accomplishments of Brother Washington and a means to restore him to the position of respect and honor that he so richly deserves.

George Washington Memorial Society

On August 19, 2011, the Board of Directors approved the creation of a society dedicated to the support of the George Washington Masonic National Memorial. The Society is comprised of individuals who are dedicated to the support of the Memorial and its mission. The purpose of the Society is to raise awareness of and support for the Memorial. We now have one hundred and seventy-six Charter Members who made an initial contribution of $1,000.00 and have pledged $250.00 annually.

Public, Community, and Civic Events

The Memorial continues to participate in and to provide meeting and event space for community and civic groups, international and national organizations and for charitable, fund-raising events. Events this year included Alexandria Chamber of Commerce Annual Business Awards Ceremony; City of Alexandria Annual Employee Public Service Awards; the annual City of Alexandria Police and Fire Department Promotion and Retirement Ceremonies and their annual Holiday Luncheon Celebration; Andy Fredericks Training Days—Annual Fire Service Training Program to continue Andy Fredericks legacy of instruction on basic structural fire fighting; Alexandria Symphony Orchestra; Symphony Orchestra of Northern Virginia; Virginia Bronze Handbell Ensemble; Metropolitan School of Arts; The Metropolitan Chorus; Washington Metropolitan Philharmonic; Alexandria Choral Society; Eclipse Chamber Orchestra—world-class performances by some of the nation’s top Chamber Music Ensembles; George Washington Community School annual graduation; Alexandria Kiwanis Club and National Symphony Orchestra Concert to support the Youth of Alexandria Scholarships; Graduation Ceremonies for Commonwealth Academy, George Washington Community School and Chamberlain College of Nursing; Annual Just Dance Fathers Day Recital; Annual Shakespeare Summer Camp; American Musical Landscape; Knight Templar Annual Easter Sunrise Service; Virginia Opera Free Community Concerts; and First Night Alexandria—a family oriented, New Year’s Eve Celebration.

Memorial Programs

The Grand Lodge of the Month Program. This successful program continues to create awareness of and support for the Memorial. The Grand Lodge of the Month display is located in The Form and Function of American Freemasonry exhibit on the first floor of the Memorial. The majority of the Grand Lodges participating this year sent outstanding exhibits featuring their history and activities. Several Grand Lodges visited the Memorial during their month. We thank all the Grand Lodges that participated in the Grand Lodge Month Program for their interest in and support of the Memorial.

Holiday Ornaments. The Holiday Ornament for 2017 is The George Washington Masonic National Memorial surrounded by a wreath with Masonic symbols. The Memorial stands more than 330 feet high nearly a mile from the Potomac River in Alexandria, Virginia. Designed in the classical fashion, symbolizing the classical reference and model for the new nation created by Washington and our Founding Fathers. Built of Granite, symbolizing the strength, the courage, and the perseverance of George Washington. Erected on the highest hill in the area, pointing to the heavens, symbolizing the Divine Guidance and Providence that Washington believed was guiding his efforts in the creation of our nation.

The Memorial symbolizes the reverence, respect and admiration that the Masonic Fraternity has for our Foremost Freemason, our First Citizen, our First and Greatest President, Brother George Washington.

2017 Holiday Ornament— The George Washington Masonic National Memorial.

Dedicatory Tree Program. Since its conception in 2001 to beautify the Memorial grounds, reduce erosion and run-off, provide a habitat for birds and wildlife and to establish a tree canopy to create much-needed oxygen for the community, we have planted 700 trees and installed seven Dedicatory benches. The program is a meaningful way to honor and remember individuals and organizations with a living memorial.

Light. This Memorial publication continues to improve and expand both in size and distribution. It is mailed to nearly 350000 individuals and to untold thousands via the internet. The publication was named Light to signify the function of the Memorial spreading Masonic Light to the four corners of the world. Light is available to read and/or download from our website.

The Memorial Website. Our website, www.gwmemorial.org, is continually being improved and updated to reflect the changes, programs, projects and events at the Memorial and the activities of the Memorial Association. The Memorial also uses social media, such as Facebook and Twitter, to promote its mission.

Projects

2017 was a year of repairs, restorations, improvements and upgrades to the Memorial building and grounds, some planned and some not planned but required. One of the major projects for 2017 was the tower exterior restoration. This included the complete restoration of the exterior stonework on the fifth through seventh tower levels. All exterior mortar joints were cut out and re-mortared and lead weather cap was installed on all the horizontal joints. The restoration, upgrading and waterproofing of the fifth and seventh level roofs was completed.

The scaffolding has now been moved to enclose the third level. It will be expanded in the spring to encase the third and fourth levels of the tower. The other major project for this year, which is still on-going, is the removal, repair, restoration and re-installation of the Allyn Cox painting in Memorial Hall depicting Washington Laying the Cornerstone of the United State Capital in 1793. This mural is 48 feet wide and 18 feet high. In February of

2016, it was discovered that the south wall on which the painting is mounted was bulging in the middle. The wall was monitored and in February of this year it was evident that the wall was continuing to move and that the painting was beginning to tear along the bulge for a distance of approximately 30 lineal feet. The decision was made to have the mural removed and restored and to deconstruct and rebuild the interior South Wall of Memorial Hall. The deconstruction, construction and plastering of the interior wall has been completed and the mural is scheduled to be re-installed in January of 2018. A new Reception Station has been built and installed at the North Entrance. This new station is the location for the security camera monitors, the telephone, and computers and is manned by Tour Guides and/or Security Officers for daytime and evening events. Bronze hand rails were installed on the handicap ramps at the entrances to the North and South Lodge Rooms and the main entrance to Memorial Hall.

A concrete Walkway was installed from the front of the Memorial along the entrance driveway to connect to the sidewalks on Callahan Drive and King Street. These walkways were provided through the generosity of Brother William A. Simms, a life-long Alexandria native and active DeMolay and Mason. The on-going projects include the re-paving of the front driveway, the replacement of the windows in Memorial Hall and the cleaning and restoration of the Allyn Cox mural located on the North wall of Memorial Hall.

These are the major projects completed in 2017 and there are numerous other projects included in the ongoing maintenance and restoration of the Memorial.

Per Member Campaign

The George Washington Masonic National Memorial was conceived, financed, constructed and is owned and governed by the Grand Lodges of the United States, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. The goal of the Memorial is to have all these Grand Lodges support their Memorial with a one dollar per member annual contribution. The Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania is the newest participant in the program and contributes one dollar per member and five dollars per initiate. The Grand Lodges of Hawaii and Arizona also adopted participation in the program. The Grand Lodge of Hawaii contributes one dollar per member and five dollars per initiate. The Grand Lodge of Arizona contribute one dollar per member and twenty five dollars per initiate. California contributes one dollar per member and fifteen dollars per initiate. New Jersey contributes one dollar per member and ten dollars per initiate. Alaska, Connecticut, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Nevada, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, Puerto Rico, Utah, Washington, Wisconsin and Wyoming contribute one dollar per member and five dollars per initiate annually. Rhode Island contributes one dollar per member and three dollars per initiate. Nebraska contributes one dollar and fifty cents per member. Idaho, Indiana, Louisiana, Michigan and Virginia contribute one dollar per member. Kansas contributes fifty cents per member annually. Minnesota, Missouri and Ohio contribute twenty-five cents per member and five dollars per initiate annually. The remaining Grand Lodges contribute five dollars per initiate or from their General Budgets.

An annual per member contribution is the most fair way for all the Grand Lodges and thus all the Freemasons of America to support and ensure the continuation of their Memorial.

The George Washington Masonic National Memorial belongs to the Freemasons of the United States. It was conceived and created to honor the memory, character and legacy of Brother George Washington, our first and greatest President and our foremost Freemason.

The Memorial was financed entirely through private contributions. Not one cent of public funds has ever been nor will ever be received by the Memorial Association. Thank you for your continued support of your Memorial which allows us to fulfill the mission of the Memorial Association which is “To inspire humanity through education to emulate and promote the virtues, character, and vision of George Washington, the Man, the Mason, and Father of our Country.”

Memorial Collections, Library & Exhibits Museum Collections. The Museum Collections continue to be cataloged into a database. Now surpassing 2,600 in number, each item is described, digitally photographed, and individually numbered with an assigned storage location and a file folder. Each item’s digital image is linked within the database and available through the network drive. In the last three years, the museum’s database grew by more than one thousand entries. The entire museum collection was inventoried in July and every item was confirmed in its permanent location.

American Alliance of Museums Accreditation. Over the last few years, the museum’s collection significantly increased. Since late 2016, the staff has worked to achieve a higher standard of professional care by participating in the American Alliance of Museums (AAM) accreditation program. Like other institutional and professional accreditation, an AAM accreditation will earn the Memorial Association national recognition of our commitment to museum excellence and the highest professional standards, improve our relationships with other museums that may result in more loans and traveling exhibitions, greater accesses to funding agencies, and greater support for individual donors.

The process began with AAM’s Collections Stewardship Assessment. This provides the staff with a degree of understanding of the work needed to be done prior to applying for accreditation. Taking nearly a year to complete, this stage focuses on collections policies, planning, access to the collections and operations documentations.

To assist us in this first step, AAM provided us with a museum professional who had already gone through the process. On June 22, peer reviewer, Debra Hughes, Curator of Collections and Exhibits at the Hagley Museum and Library in Delaware, started our two-day assessment.

After hours of interviews with the staff, tours of the building, and walk-throughs of the collection storage areas, Ms. Hughes had gathered more than enough information to create a report on our collection stewardship status. Several weeks later, Ms. Hughes’ Collections Stewardship Report praised the care of our artifacts and the exhibitions throughout the Memorial as being well-crafted with visitor engaging objects and labels. One area she pointed out for “outstanding commitment” was of staff research that was “excellent for their potential use as the bedrock of interpretive information for tour, exhibits, and other programs.”

Our plan for 2018 is to address the issues described within the report and become an accredited museum within three years. The next step is to submit our policies to AAM’s Core Documents Verification Program and transfer the data on our museum collections into a professional collections management database.

Louis A. Watres Library. The library remains organized and ready for cataloging.

Besides expected small donations from Freemasons or their families, we received two large donations from the late W. Bro. Harry B. Lyon and R. W. Bro. W. Kirk MacNulty. The Lyon estate donation included his Masonic library and collections of general history books. The MacNulty’s donation not only includes a variety of esoteric books but also his important papers and research files for the several books he published.

Just prior to arriving in New York City to be inaugurated President of the United States, the brothers of Holland Lodge No. 2 of New York elected George Washington an honorary member. The brethren sent this certificate to Washington, dated March 7, 1789.

A section of the Mezzanine Floor within the tower was renovated into an archival storage area for U.S. State Grand York Rite and other Masonic governing bodies’ annual proceedings. The Grand Lodge of Michigan’s proceedings along with several other grand jurisdictions’ proceedings were digitized.

Exhibits and Displays

Grand Lodge of the Month Program. The 2017 Grand Lodge of the Month program included displays within The Form and Function of American Freemasonry exhibit. We received material from Grand Lodges of Indiana, Mississippi, Illinois, Alabama, Maine, Missouri, Arkansas, Michigan, Florida, Kansas, Texas, and Iowa.

North anteroom Display cases. Selected items were added into the display of 2017 donations from the Lyon, Egan Marshall, and MacHarg families, and more recently acquired items were added to the display of Memorial Association souvenirs such as plates, spoons, and matchbooks.

Other Projects

Washington’s Birthday Symposium. As part of the annual Washington Birthday celebration, the 2017 public symposium was held. Titled George Washington and the Northern Virginia Frontier, 1732–1775, the three speakers were Dr. Jimmie McClelland of Northern Virginia Community College, Washington scholar Bruce Ragsdale, Ph.D., and William Ferraro of the George Washington Papers at the University of Virginia. More than 200 people enjoyed the Saturday afternoon event.

Bronze Statue of Washington. In 1968 Rock Creek Episcopal Church, Washington DC, purchased a bronze reproduction of Houdon’s c. 1791 statue of Washington (original at the Virginia State House). In 1969 the church placed the statue on long-term permanent loan to the Memorial Association where it was displayed on the first floor, in the east end of Grand Masonic Hall. The next year it was moved to the Masonic section of nearby Mt. Comfort Cemetery. In the 1990s the church sold the cemetery to Dignity Memorial, Inc. After several discussions between the cemetery’s management and Rock Creek Church, they confirmed the statue is indeed the Memorial Association property. In 2017 the statue was repaired and cleaned by Conservation Solutions, Inc., Maryland. The statue will be displayed in Grand Masonic Hall.

Allyn Cox Mural of the U.S. Capitol Cornerstone Ceremony. Installed on Memorial Hall’s south wall in 1955, the oil paint on canvas mural is 48 feet wide by 18 feet high. In 2016 it was discovered the wall behind the mural had ruptured and torn the canvas almost its entire length. Olin Conservation, Inc., was hired to remove the mural and transport the panels to their studio. After constructing the scaffolding and a plastic-sheeted enclosed space the work took several weeks. Over the last several months, the adhesive on the back of the panels was removed and the front paint has been cleaned. Meanwhile, the terracotta wall was torn down and re-built and the entire south wall re-plastered. The mural is due to be reinstalled in early 2018. After which, the north wall mural of Gen. Washington attending Christ Church Philadelphia in 1779, will be cleaned in place.

George Washington Masonic “Evidence Book.” Continuing work on a book that documents Washington’s membership in, and relationship with, Freemasonry made great progress in 2018. Research visits were made to the Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania’s Library and Museum, Philadelphia, the Grand Lodge of New York’s Library and Museum, Manhattan, the Grand Lodge of Rhode Island’s Library and Museum, East Providence, the Grand Lodge of Masons in Massachusetts’ Library, Boston, the Scottish Rite Masonic Library and Museum (NMJ) in Lexington, Massachusetts, and the Boston Athenaeum.

Also in 2017, a database of more than 125 items related to George Washington and Freemasonry was completed. This database includes all known correspondence (original drafts and fair copies), Masonic books, lodge minute books, and artifacts such as Masonic aprons, a gavel, and a trowel. Fifty-nine of these items in the Library of Congress were digitally photographed. Another fifty items are in the greater Washington, D.C., area and are scheduled to be photographed in early 2018. The remaining items are held in Masonic and private libraries across the country and photograph requests will be sent to these repositories.

With the contents of the book identified, the Memorial Association and the University of Virginia Press are in an agreement to publish a “coffee-table” format book of color images of every item, or “evidence,” related to George Washington and Freemasonry. Chief Historian of the White House Historical Association, Edward Lengel, Ph.D., has written the book’s introduction. Social Media. The Memorial’s website and Facebook page have started to include more articles and blogs on various history relating to our mission, including, but not limited to, the history of the Memorial Association, George Washington, and Freemasonry. Over the upcoming years, we will continue to expand and disseminate information to make articles more available to the public.

Community Service. As the Memorial is in the City of Alexandria, we are honored of being asked to serve on various committees and boards. In May, Collections Assistant Tyler Vanice was appointed a Representative of the Masonic fraternity to the George Washington Birthday Celebration Committee and will serve for two years.

Publications & outreach. George Washington’s Rules for Freemasons in Life and Lodge, a small book containing the 110 Rules of Civility reorganized for Masonic purposes was published by Macoy’s Supply and Publishing Co. of Richmond. “A Firm Foundation for Freemasonry’s Memorial to Washington” was published in Light, Vol. 23., No. 1. A book review of The Treasures of English Freemasonry, 1717–2017, edited by Richard Gan, was written to be published in Ars Quatuor Coronatorum.

Communications & Development

C

ommunicating the positive message of the George Washington Masonic National Memorial is the first step toward promoting increased visitation and building a broad base of support. The Memorial connects each visitor to history and heritage, linking George Washington’s legacy to the present. Numerous means are used to communicate that vital message, including printed reports and newsletters, web pages, social media, guided tours, speechwriting, and public appearances.

Fundraising & Development

One of the key functions of the Memorial’s Communications office is supporting our fundraising efforts. We thank all of our donors for their enthusiastic support.

The Landmark Century Campaign. The announcement of the George Washington Masonic National Memorial’s designation as a National Historic Landmark in 2015 brought a fresh recognition of the important role that the Memorial occupies. The National Park Service emphasized the Memorial’s unique identity as “the only major unified, fully national initiative of the Freemasons and among the boldest attempts by a private organization to memorialize George Washington.” In their report, they hoped that this designation would promote a “preservation ethic” among those who care for the Memorial. Such a preservation ethic is firmly in place among the Memorial Association’s leaders, and, at their direction, a new capital campaign was designed in 2016 in order to promote that commitment to restoration within the Masonic world as well as the community at large. Inspired by the Memorial’s designation as a National Historic Landmark, the new Landmark Century Campaign is designed to embody that ethic of preservation and improvement. The goal is to raise $6.5 million in order to complete the interior and exterior restoration of the building already underway. Not since the original construction of the Memorial have we engaged in a fundraising endeavor of this scope.

Contributions to the Landmark Century Campaign are cumulative over time, and using the Memorial’s website or contacting the Memorial, donors may make monthly pledges in amounts to fit any budget. This means that a monthly pledge of $25 or more will accumulate over time, passing through the levels of recognition that are noted in our publications and on our website (see pages 37 to 49 for a list of recent contributors by level). Because the Memorial is a 501(c)(3) educational foundation, these donations are tax-deductible to the full extent of the law.

The Landmark Century Campaign was launched in 2016, and 2017 was the first full year in which the effort was in effect. Individuals, lodges, Grand Lodges, and other organizations may all participate in the campaign. The Campaign is promoted via the updated Memorial website, Facebook, the LIGHT newsletter, and through the Landmark Century Campaign brochure. Participation in the campaign has been growing steadily, driven by widespread interest in the Memorial’s restoration efforts.

Opposite: In November of 2017, the city of Alexandria installed new signs designed to simplify wayfinding for motorists and pedestrians along King Street, Duke Street, and Callahan Drive.

In 2017, the Landmark Century Campaign raised $511,960, with an additional $100,000 designated for restoration from a bequest.

The Friends of the Memorial program is a key component of the campaign, bringing in $135,953, or 26.5% of the Landmark Century total. Gifts to the Friends program may be made singly or through a monthly pledge. In 2017, 690 people participated in the Friends program, a 10% increase from 625 in 2016. The average annual contribution for participants in the Friends program in 2017 was $197. A distinction was noted between those who used the monthly pledge option, whose annual contribution averaged $262, and other Friends, whose average was $188 per year.

Another major aspect of the Landmark Century Campaign is the Patron Pledge.

A Patron is any donor who has given $5,000 or more to the Memorial Association over time (excluding tree dedications and George Washington Memorial Society dues, and donations

by Masonic governing bodies). In 2017, the number of Patrons increased by 15 to a total of 70. This increased growth was partially in response to the Campaign. A monthly payment option has been added, allowing a donor to take the Patron Pledge in amounts of $100 or more. This is intended to encourage participation in the Patron levels among those who wish to do so with smaller amounts over time. In 2017, there were 10 participants in the Patron Pledge, up from 4 in 2016. The average annual contribution of a Patron Pledge participant was $1,560.

The increase in the number of both Friends of the Memorial and Patrons—as well as an overall improvement in revenue from contributions—demonstrates the early success of the campaign. The convenience and efficacy of the website’s monthly contribution system allows for a higher average annual contribution per donor.

A major gift was received from the first Landmark Century Architect level donor of the campaign, William A. Simms. This generous contribution enabled the Memorial to begin major improvements to the grounds, including the addition of a new sidewalk connecting the Memorial to Callahan Drive and King Street along the Memorial’s driveway (see page 13 for photographs of this project).

Through the generosity of the Memorial’s supporters, we can continue to make progress toward the important goal of restoration and enhancement. (See the Report of the Executive Director for current details on the project to completely restore and improve the Memorial.)

Dedicatory Tree Program. This program, established in 2001, allows a donor to have a tree on the Memorial’s grounds dedicated to an individual or organization. Dozens of new trees have been planted and are now available for dedication. Today, each of the 675 dedicated trees on the Memorial’s grounds has its own web page, featuring complete donor information, Facebook and Twitter share buttons, photos of the tree and dedication marker, and interactive maps based on GPS coordinates. These are indexed both by dedication and by donor. This allows anyone—the honoree, the donor, their loved ones and associates— to easily find the tree when visiting us. Also, social media buttons allow instantaneous promotion of any tree through Facebook and Twitter. In 2017, twenty-four new trees were dedicated, a 19% increase over the prior year, bringing the total to 700 trees dedicated to date.

George Washington Memorial Society. Charter Membership in the George Washington Memorial Society remains a very popular way to support the Memorial.

Membership is based on an initial contribution of $1,000, followed by annual dues of $250.

The Society experienced 9.8% growth in 2017, gaining fifteen new Charter Members.

Digital Communications

Website redesign. Our website, www.gwmemorial.org, is an important resource for those who wish to learn about our services, activities, events, and history. In 2016, the Memorial’s web presence was updated with many enhancements. The technical basis of the site was upgraded from xhtml 1.0 to the latest standard, html5. One of the benefits of this upgrade is that it allows responsive layout of the design, which means that the site’s appearance is more flexible based upon whether the user is viewing gwmemorial.org on a large desktop screen or the smaller screen of a mobile device.

Along with the technical improvements, a significant amount of new content was added to the site. The site offers updated information on the exhibits, and better assists visitors as they plan their visits to Alexandria. It also features information to support the Memorial’s Landmark Century Campaign, with timely articles showing the progress of our restoration projects and user-friendly ways to participate by making one-time contributions or automatically repeating gifts.

Social Media. The Memorial is very active on the dominant social media platform, Facebook. Our highly popular Facebook page promotes widespread awareness of the Memorial, advertises events, recommends Gift Shop purchases, highlights new exhibits, and promotes tourism. Most posts generate between 2,000 and 6,000 views. Audience growth is actively pursued. On December 31, 2017, our Facebook page had 23,551 followers, an increase of 1,506 followers, up 6.5% from the last year’s number. Some of our most popular Facebook updates of 2017 included a post about Washington’s raising as a Master Mason, a post about the United Grand Lodge of England’s inclusion of an image of the Memorial’s cornerstone mural during their tricentennial celebration at Royal Albert Hall, and a post about the Memorial’s free admission on Washington’s Birthday.

Print Materials

Traditional print design is also a major part of our communications work. Each year, the Memorial makes use of a variety of documents, all of which reflect production values appropriate to the Memorial’s inspiring mission.

Capital Campaign Mailing. The need to communicate the new capital campaign resulted in a new kind of strategic mailing. Our Landmark Century Campaign mailing is a photographically-rich eight-page brochure with an integrated, detachable, postage-paid envelope. It was mailed to a larger number of potential donors than our prior direct appeals, with positive results. Each version of the mailing is updated with the latest information on the progress of the restoration work.

Light newsletter. Two editions of LIGHT of the George Washington Masonic National Memorial, our newsletter, were produced in 2017. This key publication is one of our primary modes of outreach and communication. The newsletter continues to be issued in the expanded 16-page format, which allows for greater and more substantial communication with our constituency. Distribution of the newsletter increased in 2017, allowing more people to learn about the Memorial and its mission, and contributing to the development of a wider base of support.

2016 Annual Report. The 52-page 2016 Annual Report was created in February and distributed to our Active Members and major supporters.

Washington’s Rules of Civility. At the beginning of 2015, a pocket edition of George Washington’s Rules of Civility was produced for distribution at the Conference of Grand Masters in North America. These proved to be exceptionally popular with the attendees, and many requests were received for additional copies. The Memorial has since made them available in several ways. Quantities are distributed upon request to Masonic organizations.

Individuals may request a free copy via our website. Also, copies are offered as a gift to all visitors at the Memorial’s front desk. As a result, over 20,000 copies of Rules of Civility were distributed in 2017.

Photography. The Director of Communications continues to provide day-to-day photography services for the Memorial, covering general needs, special events, architectural

perspectives, maintenance projects, and promotional photography. These images form the majority of those used in our print collateral and online presence. By exploring opportunities to see the Memorial in new ways, we are enabled to relate the Memorial’s place in the context of the community more vividly and to promote awareness and visitation.

Promotion

Grand Lodge of North Dakota. A special presentation about the Memorial was made at the annual communication of the Grand Lodge of North Dakota. The presentation included details about the ongoing restoration work and an advance summary of the Landmark Century Campaign. Special thanks are due to Roger Stout, Grand Master of North Dakota, for providing an opportunity to share our mission.

Ambassador Training. The revitalization of the Memorial Association’s Ambassador program is an important aspect of our work. The purpose of this program is to expand the mission of the Memorial Association into our constituent jurisdictions. Ambassadors spread the core message of the Memorial, promoting the virtues and character of George Washington within their home jurisdictions through education, special events, and advocacy.

Special two-day trainings were held for new Ambassadors from North Carolina and Maine.

Potential Ambassadors came to the Memorial for an interactive seminar designed to identify their individual skills. New Ambassadors are appointed for a three-year term, which is renewable. After an orientation and brainstorming session, each Ambassador outlined a set of goals for his region of the state. These goals were tailored to each Ambassador’s interests, skills, and strengths. In further developing the new Ambassador program, we are grateful for the assistance provided by Second Vice President Claire V. Tusch of Maine.

Tourism & Visitation

While our print outreach and digital marketing continue to grow in scope and prominence, the message of the Memorial is communicated most powerfully to those who visit the building and experience it firsthand through attending an official event such as our George Washington’s Birthday Gala or our guided tours, offered five times daily. Each year, thousands of visitors take the Memorial’s one-hour interpretive guided tour. In order to support the tour guides in their work, the Director of Communications and Development maintains and updates the Memorial’s Tour Handbook, containing our tour outline and essential customer service instructions.
