Gwinnett Medical Center has a new reason to brag: It was recently recognized in a study as one of America’s 25 best hospitals to work for. The national study, which was commissioned by Indeed.com, analyzed data from more than 72 million ratings and reviews by past and present employees in hospitals and healthcare systems across the country. Discovery High School senior Karissa Jackson has always been a fan of Beyonce and Jay-Z’s music. On Aug. 29, she became an even bigger one after the power couple announced Jackson was a recipient of a $100,000 scholarship from the BeyGood Initiative and Shawn Carter Foundation scholarship program.
“I had no idea I was going to get that,” Jackson said. “It’s really exciting and I couldn’t stop crying because it’s really a blessing to be awarded something like this.” Jackson was nominated by the Lawrenceville Boys and Girls Club, a place she has been a part of the last nine years and considers a second home. Club mentor Assane Beye has gotten to know Jackson over the past seven years and said her
involvement in the club is what sets her apart. “She’s just an unbelievable kid and everything that we look for in a Boys and Girls kid,” Beye said. “We normally like to see people come three times a week. She’s here Monday through Friday doing what we ask her to do and more.” Beye said Jackson has won the club’s Youth of the Year award twice, is the president of the Keystone Club and serves as
a teen mentor at the Boys and Girls Club. “It’s a big thing and we knew she deserved the scholarship,” Beye said. “She’s a great student with a 3.8 GPA, she does everything that needs to (be done) inside and out of the club and is a great leader. That’s everything you look for in someone to win something like this.” Jackson said she plans See SENIOR, Page 6A
