Last year’s Gwinnett County Public Schools seniors scored higher on average on the SATs than their peers both stateand nation-wide, according to information released by the school system on Tuesday.

Gwinnett’s Class of 2017 received an average score of 1084 out of a possible 1600. That’s 24 points higher than the national average and 34 points higher than the state average.

The Gwinnett School of Mathematics, Science and Technology scored highest on the SAT in Gwinnett with a 1315.

“Individual school averages can be greatly affected by the unique characteristics of each year’s test takers,” Gwinnett school officials said in a press release.

“Students can improve their SAT scores by doing well in rigorous courses, reading challenging books and articles and writing concise essays that include compelling details to support a persuasive argument.”

Last year’s seniors were the first to take a revised version of the SAT. In 2016, the College Board made content, format and scoring changes to the test. The redesigned SAT prioritized content “that reflects the kind of reading and math students will encounter in college and their future work lives,” according to a GCPS press release.

The test focused on evidence-based reading and writing as well as mathematics. Students could also choose to take an

In fact, Rodriguez was trying to buy a pistol from a fellow member of the Sur 13 gang so that he could “ride on” Rivera.

“At trial, the prosecution presented gang expert testimony which established that the term ‘ride on’ means to harm or kill another,” according to the DA’s trial summary.

The prosecution also admitted a picture during the trial that showed Rodgriguez sitting on a bed holding two firearms and a pistol at his side just minutes prior to Rivera’s murder.

Officers and gang investigators testified at the trial that Rodriguez held a leadership position in the gang Sur 13 and in a subset gang known as “El Combo.” Rodgriguez’s attorney argued that “El Combo” was not a criminal street gang. He said it was a Puerto Rican rap group to which Rodriguez belonged.

The prosecution rebutted his defense by showing various pictures of gang-related tattoos on Rodriguez’s body.

“Surenos 13” is displayed across his chest while the California penal code for murder, “187,” was tattooed on his right wrist.

Rodriguez also has a El Combo gas mask symbol on his neck and his gang name, “Joker G,” on his forearm.

While awaiting his trial in jail, Rodriguez attacked a fellow inmate to prevent him testifying at trial and continued to arrange multi-kilogram meth transactions from behind bars.

On Monday, after 12 days of trial, a Gwinnett County jury found Rodriguez guilty of committing felony murder, conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute meth, aggravated battery, influencing a witness, aggravated assault and three counts of criminal gang activity.

They also found him not guilty of malice murder and five other counts in the 15-count indictment.

Before sentencing, Gwinnett County Superior Court Judge Karen Beyers admonished Rodriguez for the lifestyle he’d chosen.

She then sentenced him to life in prison without the possibility of parole plus 135 years to be served in prison following his life sentence. It was the maximum sentence provided under the law.

Physician will know cause of low blood cells DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 90 years old and in good health. I recently saw my doctor and had abnormal blood test results. My white cell count was 2.1, my hemoglobin 9.5 and my hematocrit was 29 percent.

Is there any kind of vitamin or food I can take to raise these levels?

— M.A. ANSWER: Both your white blood cells and red blood cells are abnormally low. Before prescribing a course of treatment, such as a vitamin or special diet, it’s critical to find out why these counts are low. I don’t have enough information to narrow down a long list of possibilities, but I can outline the approach doctors generally take when considering this condition.

I would first want to know the results of your platelet count. I expect that it will be low, in which case the condition goes by the general name of “pancytopenia,” which just means “all the blood cells are low.” While it is true that some nutritional deficiencies can cause this (vitamins B-12 and folic acid, and the mineral copper are the most common), there are many other causes that are more common. Since all of these cells are produced in the bone marrow, a marrow biopsy sometimes is necessary. However, long before that point, a hematologist (blood specialist) will do a complete history and exam, and will look personally at your blood sample for signs of infection, immune system diseases, medication side effects and primary bone marrow diseases that can cause this problem.

Some of the causes are serious and benefit from early intervention, so I would recommend seeing a specialist about this soon.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I exercise six days per week (I’m 67). Frequently, the topic of measuring hydration comes up with different workout pals. I’ve read that coffee and tea count because, even though there is caffeine, there is water. A woman I know says that she subtracts any water with caffeine (coffee or tea) because of the caffeine. When I broached this subject with my daughter, who is an emergencyroom nurse, she said that she once worked with a doctor who indicated you have to subtract double the quantity of the caffeinated beverages to accurately account for the water you lose due to caffeine. I have only one or two cups per day, but I want to make sure I’m properly hydrated. I would love your advice.

— D.T. ANSWER: The very first time that people take caffeine, there is a mild diuretic effect: More fluid comes out of your body than goes into it. However, the kidneys rapidly get accustomed to this effect, so regular drinkers of caffeinated beverages like coffee and tea do not have any diuretic effect from continued use of caffeine.

This has been studied in volunteers many times, and I assure you that the myth of caffeinated beverages not being a hydration source is false, although many, including some medical professionals, believe the myth.

Consequently, coffee and tea count toward hydration.

BOC postpones vote on ‘farmmunity’ for another week

A proposal to build a farm-centered neighborhood on Lakeview Road near Grayson that has been plagued by delays along the public vetting process throughout the summer got hit with one more delay Tuesday night.

The Bluedress Farm proposal was originally scheduled to be voted on by Gwinnett County’s Planning Commission and Board of Commissioners in June.

The Planning Commission then postponed a public hearing on it twice. After the planning commissioners approved it in August, the Board of Commissioners then postponed its own hearing until this week.

Tommy Hunter asked for, and got, the issue tabled for one week.

“We’re real close,” Hunter told his fellow commissioners. “I just have some questions … so I’m going to make a motion to table this for one week.”

The commission is now scheduled to vote on the pro-

posal during its 2 p.m. Oct. 3 business meeting. No additional public comment will be heard during that meeting before the vote as the public hearing was held this week.

That does not, however, mean residents who support or oppose the project are barred from contacting commissioners before Oct. 3.

The proposal is something different for Gwinnett County because it would be a neighborhood that would include a community farm with a boathouse cafe that would have commercial functions as a coffee shop and a place where produce raised on the farm would be sold.

It would be built on a 27.65-acre site on the 1200 and 1300 blocks of Lakeview Road, with some of the land expected to be set aside for green space conservation.

“The family farm is dying, but we may have a fix for it,” Bluedress Farm planner Justin Brady said.

“I got the idea that maybe we could build a community around a working farm.”

The original proposal included 32 homes, but Brady told county commissioners that experts he had look over the plans told him he wouldn’t have enough homes to support the concept. Therefore, he presented new plans to commissioners Tuesday that bumped up the number of homes in the neighborhood to 45 and increased pedestrian pathways.

“We’re happy with the result,” Brady said.

But not everyone else is

happy with the idea.

Opponents to the project raised issues with the boathouse cafe aspect of the project, saying it would invite additional commercial development along Lakeview Road. They also raised concerns about the commission voting on a revised site plan that was handed out to commissioners before the meeting.

A group of residents in the area calling itself the Lakeview Road Coalition has formed in opposition to the commercial aspects of the proposal.

Coalition member Brenda Lee told commissioners that she felt Brady could make a farm-centered neighborhood work without having a commercial aspect to the project.

“Deny this and he can come back in 12 months with a plan that makes sense from the beginning,” she said.

U.S. justice department steps into GGC student’s free speech lawsuit

A Georgia Gwinnett College student who is suing the school, claiming that its speech zone and speech code policies have violated his First Amendment rights, got some backing from the federal government on Tuesday.

The U.S. Department of Justice filed a brief in Chike Uzuegbunam’s suit against the school, expressing the government’s interest in the case. In a statement, the department said the allegations “adequately represented violations” of students’ First and 14th Amendment rights.

Federal officials also

said there were several issues with school’s policies concerning student speech, arguing they are not content-neutral, were not tailored to “achieve a compelling government interest” and made it difficult to overcome what the Justice Department called a “heckler’s veto.”

“A national recommitment to free speech on campus and to ensuring First Amendment rights is long overdue which is why, starting today, the Department of Justice will do its part in this struggle,” Attorney General Jeff Sessions said in the statement. “We will enforce federal law, defend free speech, and protect students’ free expression.”

The lawsuit was filed

in December with Uzuegbunam and his attorneys asserting that the school restricted his ability to offer free speech to “two tiny speech zones” that are open for 18 hours each week.

The student asserted in the suit that school officials required him to ask for permission to speak three days before hand, and ordered him to not talk about his faith because it was deemed “disorderly conduct.”

Officials from the Department of Justice said in the brief that the government has a “significant interest” in the outcome of the case and “the vigilant protection of constitutional freedoms in institutions of higher learning.” They also said in the brief that the govern-

ment is also interested in the case because of allegations that there was disparate treatment of speech based on religion.

Justice department officials said Congress and the Supreme Court have previously weighed in on different issues brought up by the case, including free speech on college campuses and the expression of religious viewpoints.

“Congress has declared that ‘an institution of higher education should facilitate the free and open exchange of ideas,’” federal officials wrote in the brief.

“In recent years, however, concerns have been raised that some institutions of higher education have failed to answer this call, and that

free speech has been under attack on campuses across the country.”

Georgia Gwinnett College spokeswoman Asia Hauter said the school views First Amendment rights as being “of the utmost importance.”

“Though the College cannot comment on pending litigation, it has ensured and will continue to ensure that individuals are able to exercise their First Amendment rights on campus,” she said in an email.

Uzuegbunam’s attorney, Travis Barham, said in a statement that he was encouraged by the Department of Justice’s filing, which he said supports his client’s arguments against Georgia Gwinnett College officials.

“As the Department of Justice brief filed in this case affirms, students don’t lose their constitutionally protected right to free speech when they set foot on a college campus,” Barham said. “While touting commitments to diversity and open communications, Georgia Gwinnett College confined the speech of students to two ridiculously small speech zones, and then censored the speech that occurred in those areas.

“It is encouraging to see that the Department of Justice takes the constitutional rights of college and university students so seriously, and we hope that Georgia Gwinnett College will be held accountable for disregarding these freedoms.”

Revisiting the war in Vietnam “The highest patriotism is not a blind acceptance of official policy, but a love of one’s country deep enough to call her to a higher plain.” — Sen. Given the division that war caused in America, it is a pretty fair chronicling of the way things were half a century ago. The film brought back a lot of mostly bad memories to people of my generation.

Chief among them was the unfairness of those drafted to fight. The film notes Cal a disproThomas portionate number of African Americans were taken from inner cities. I saw that in my company at Fort Gordon, Ga., where the few white men, besides me, were poor West Virginians.

I had recently flunked out of my freshman year at American University and was listed as 1A, prime draft material. Those who remained in college or those who suddenly discovered an interest in The Almighty and enrolled in divinity school, remained deferred. A woman I knew at the draft board called to say my number was about to come up and urged me to make arrangements.

I was working as a copyboy at NBC News in Washington at the time and I asked the Pentagon correspondent if he knew someone I could speak to about a good assignment. He did and I wound up “fighting communists” with Armed Forces Radio in New York. Few others had such connections, which was also unfair to them. I was from a conservative family that was supposed to hate communists, but the Vietnam War, even in the mid-’60s, increasingly appeared to me more like Custer’s last stand, not World War II. The film notes the failure of generals and politicians at all levels. John F. Kennedy was concerned that pulling advisers from Vietnam might hurt his re-election chances in 1964. After his assassination, Lyndon Johnson had the same concern, and listened to generals trained in World War II tactics, which were wrong for Vietnam.

When Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara wrote a private memo to LBJ in 1967, expressing his belief that the war could not be won, Johnson shuffled him off to the World Bank. It would be two decades before McNamara spoke publicly about his doubts and confessed his misjudgments, too late for the nearly 60,000 noble and faithful patriots who were killed fighting what they were told was a war to stop the spread of communism.

Sen. Eugene McCarthy, D-Minn., who challenged Johnson for the 1968 Democratic presidential nomination and eventually forced him from the race, gave a speech in Chicago on Dec. 2, 1967, that sounded like surrender to “America: Love it or leave it” supporters of the war, but in hindsight it rings true.

“A war which is not defensible even in military terms, which runs contrary to the advice of our greatest generals — Eisenhower, Ridgway, Bradley and MacArthur — all of whom admonished us against becoming involved in a land war in Asia. Events have proved them right, as estimate after estimate as to the time of success and the military commitment necessary to success has had to be revised — always upward: more troops, more extensive bombing, a widening and intensification of the war.

Extension and intensification have been the rule, and projection after projection of success have been proved wrong.”

Again, the bravery of our military was never in doubt, but misjudgments by egomaniacal politicians are the real lessons of Vietnam. Current and future generations should watch this documentary and learn from the lessons of Vietnam, which, as evidenced by more recent wars, we apparently have not yet fully internalized.

Trump gets speech right at U.N. Donald Trump’s speech to the United Nations on Tuesday was not just great, it was totally refreshing.

The president’s address to the U.N. General Assembly was so perfect it almost made me forget all the horrible speeches his predecessor gave to that corrupt, bloated and anti-American body.

For the first time in eight years, the world saw an American president not spending half his time apologizing to the U.N. for our country’s past, present and future.

President Obama’s U.N. speeches always managed to make it sound like the United States was no different from Iran and North Korea.

He’d say we’re going to stop their evil, and we’re also going to stop our evil, as if there was a moral equivalency between us and those inhuman hellholes.

On Tuesday, President Trump did not pussyfoot around or ignore the obvious threats the rogue regimes of North Korea and Iran pose to a peaceful planet.

He blasted both countries, calling them out for violating “every principle on which the United Nations is based. They

Political promises of spending others’ money I can’t blame them, really.

It’s human nature to want something for nothing.

I speak of two tenants who recently moved into a rental unit I own. I made the mistake of renting the unit for one flat rate that included “free” utilities.

Since the tenants didn’t have to pay directly for their electricity usage, they cranked the air conditioner day and night. There was no incentive for them to turn it off when they were at work during the day or away for the weekend.

Whereas the electric bill for that unit averages about $50 per month this time of the year, their electric bill came in just under $200 per month — for the simple reason that someone else (that would be me) was footing the bill.

I got to thinking about this concept recently. It is the reason our government is so bloated and our deficit and debt (we just exceeded $20 trillion in debt a few weeks ago) are so high.

Such politicians never tell you that, to fund hundreds of new bribes, taxes will have to go up. Or that, to fund the dozens of unsustainable programs we already have, taxes will have to go up more.

Economic growth will suffer and, ultimately, everyone will suffer.

But nobody seems to care about that. That is, too few people have the desire or the ability to understand that our government cannot continue spending recklessly forever — we cannot keep borrowing and piling on debt without massive consequences.

To borrow from the late U.K. Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, sooner or later, our politicians will run out of other people’s money.

I learned my lesson. Never again will I include “free electric” in my rental contracts.

Mill Creek’s Jones, Parkview’s Brown picked for Georgia Dugout Club Hall of Fame

The Georgia Dugout Club will enshrine five new members, including two Gwinnett coaches, into its Hall of Fame at its annual Coaches Clinic scheduled Jan. 11-13 at the Marietta Hilton Hotel.

The five newest inductees include Mill Creek coach Doug Jones and Parkview coach Chan Brown. They will be joined by longtime Brunswick assistant coach Charles Skipper, Walton coach Shane Amos and Mercer University head baseball coach Craig Gibson.

“Those are five guys who have made a tremendous impact in the state of Georgia, not only in just their programs, but in the entire state,” said Georgia Dugout Club executive secretary Harvey Cochran. “They have met every qualification you could ask for.”

Jones is the only skipper in Mill Creek High School’s baseball history and his program annually ranks as one of the state’s best. Jones said he’s humbled to be part of the Class of 2018.

He may have never won a state title in his career, but he has left a positive stamp on prep baseball in Gwinnett County.

“I’m shocked,” Jones said. “Coaching baseball is like a ministry to me. It’s a calling. It’s what God has called me to do. We’ve had some bumps and bruises along the way, but we’ve made it.”

fore receiving his first job offer as assistant football and head baseball coach at Jackson County, where he spent one season before moving over to Parkview.

He was a football assistant and he coached under legendary Parkview baseball coach Hugh Buchanan (also a Georgia Dugout Club Hall of Fame member).

Jones left Parkview after seven seasons and became the head baseball coach at Brookwood High School in the fall of 1998. His best Broncos team was in 1999 when Brookwood finished as the state runner-up to nationally ranked Lassiter in the state’s highest classification. He stayed at Brookwood until 2004 when Mill Creek opened.

He boasts a 400-214 career coaching record and he has helped guide two teams to appearances in the state semifinals. He has coached Team Georgia and the Georgia Dugout Club’s Northeast All-Stars on multiple occasions.

Jones has also been a

football assistant at every stop and is just as respected on the football field.

One of the state’s decorated young coaches, Brown inherited the Parkview program from longtime coach Buchanan in 2005 and has kept the Panthers among the nation’s top programs.

A 1991 graduate of Tucker High School, Brown played collegiately at Hillsborough in Tampa, Fla., before returning to Georgia and playing under Mike Hurst (also a Georgia Dugout Club Hall of Fame member) at Georgia State.

He returned to Tucker in 1996 as a volunteer baseball and football coach. He was the head baseball and assistant football coach at Elbert County (19982001), assistant baseball and football coach at Northwest Whitfield (2002) and assistant baseball and football coach at Parkview (2003-04).

In 18 seasons as a head baseball coach, he boasts a 375-137 record. He has guided the Parkview program to nine region

titles and three state titles (2011, ’12 and ’15). His 2012 team was voted the national champions by Baseball America.

Meanwhile, the 2015 Parkview squad was named national champion by five national media outlets, including Baseball America and USA Today.

Brown was also named National Coach of the Year in 2015 by USA Today, Max Preps, Perfect Game and Baseball America. The American Baseball Coaches Association named him Southeastern Regional Coach of the Year three times (2011, ’12 and ’15), and the Baseball Coaches Association named him Regional Coach of the Year in 2015.

He boasts three Georgia Dugout Club Coach of the Year honors and three Gwinnett Dugout Club Coach of the Year awards.

“Coach (Hugh) Buchanan was my mentor at Parkview,” Brown told USA Today in 2015. “He was here for 28 years. He and (longtime Parkview assistant) Roy Massey helped groom me into what I am.”

Brown has coached in several national events.

In 2013, he was head coach of the East squad in the Perfect Game AllAmerican Classic. He also led the Team USA 15U squad to a gold medal in the Pan Am Games in 2013. Brown also guided Team USA 15U to a silver medal in the World Games in Mexico in 2014.

He has had 12 players drafted and sent more than 90 to college during his career.

Grayson’s Anderson Georgia Force roll to commits to play hoops win over Johnson Ferry The Georgia Force home-school at Charleston Southern Grayson senior Travis Anderson has made a commitment to continue his basketball career at Charleston Southern University.

The 6-foot point guard was Gwinnett’s second-leading scorer last season at 21.4 per game, guiding the Rams to the first state semifinal appearance in program history. He also averaged 4.0 assists and 2.1 steals.

Anderson transferred to Grayson as a junior after spending his first two high school seasons at Holy Innocents’ and East Jackson.

Archer cross country girls fourth at Wingfoot

The Archer girls cross country team finished fourth of 33 teams in the varsity division of the Wingfoot Cross Country Championships last weekend.

Sarah McCartney led the Tigers with a 10th-place finish and a careerbest time. Olivia Henry was 17th with a season-best time and Kelly Connerley placed 22nd.

GCPS to host informational booster club meetings

The Gwinnett County Public Schools athletic department has scheduled two upcoming sessions of its booster club essentials program, which provides information to parents and schools regarding how to properly run booster organizations.

The events are free and open to all athletic and fine arts booster club members and volunteer organizations. The first session is Thursday at Dacula High School and another follows Monday at Archer High School.

Both begin at 6:30 p.m.

Topics at the events include GCPS policy, proper formation, bonding and liability, state and federal requirements, steps to attain tax-exempt status, accounting and fraud prevention, compliance and a question-and-answer session.

There was speculation that Phil Mickelson might be left off the United States team for the Presidents Cup this week at Liberty National Golf Club in Jersey City, N.J. However, Steve Stricker polled the 10 players already on the team and his vice-captains before making his two captain’s picks, and the decision was unanimous.

Everyone wanted Lefty on the squad.

“We all know what Phil brings to the table,” Stricker said in making the pick after the 47-year-old Mickelson tied for sixth in the Dell Technologies Championship, the second event of the FedExCup playoffs. “He’s been on 20plus (United States teams).

He’s an important part of all these teams. He, too, is starting to play better. He guarantees me he’s on the right track.”

Mickelson has played on 23 consecutive U.S. teams in the Ryder Cup and the Presidents Cup. He has never missed the Presidents Cup as the Americans have built a 9-1-1 advantage over the International team.

Stricker knows what Mickelson means in the team room, with a younger teammate in the doubles events and to the fans in the New York-New Jersey area.

“I played with Phil in a U.S. Open at Bethpage (also in New Jersey), and it’s incredible how much support he gets from those people,” Stricker said of New York area sports fans.

“So hopefully he’ll use that to his advantage. He’ll be ready. He’s shown that over the years.

“Phil brings a unique dynamic to New York.

He’s loved everywhere, but especially New York. He’s a favorite son.”

Mickelson owns a 23-1612 record in the Presidents Cup, although he is only 3-5-3 in singles. He has a chance this week to pass Tiger Woods (24-15-1) for the most matches won in Presidents Cup history.

The Sports Xchange FLOWERY BRANCH — The Atlanta Falcons found a win in Detroit on a controversial weekend with reigning most valuable player Matt Ryan not on top of his game.

“What a team effort yesterday,” Falcons head coach Dan Quinn said on Monday. “I was really pumped about the defense and its resiliency, coming back and making some stops in some really opportune times. We knew it was going to take everything (we had).”

The Falcons will host the Buffalo Bills on Sunday before the early bye week. After the bye, they will face the New England Patriots on the road in a rematch of Super Bowl LI, a game they led 28-3 before losing 34-28 in overtime.

“There’s no doubt that we have to be better with the ball,” Quinn said.

Ryan opened on fire against the Lions, but cooled off and threw three interceptions that the Lions used to rally and nearly pull out the victory.

He was having his way with the Lions’ defense until free safety Glover Quinn stepped in front of his 17th pass attempt and returned it 37 yards for a touchdown.

Ryan hadn’t thrown an interception over his last 211 passes. He was victimized on the other two when running back Tevin Coleman and wide receiver Mohamed Sanu had passes clank off their hands and

into the waiting arms of Darius Slay.

“It comes down to taking care of the football, for sure,” Ryan said. “We talk about that all the time.

When you’re minus-3 in the turnover differential, it’s tough to overcome that. We were able to do it (against the Lions), but that’s certainly something that we have to clean up moving forward.”

Ryan hadn’t thrown three interceptions in a game since doing it against Indianapolis in a 24-21 loss on Nov. 22, 2015.

Ryan has thrown at least three interceptions in a game eight times during his career. Ryan was 24 of 35 for 294 yards and two touchdowns. He finished with a 77.6 passer rating.

Ryan opened the game by throwing a bomb to Julio Jones that was incomplete. The Falcons called pass plays on nine of the first 12 plays in the opening drive, which

culminated with a 4-yard touchdown pass to Sanu.

After the Falcons loosened up the Lions with all of those passes, the offensive line was able to maul them in the running game. Running back Devonta Freeman rushed for 106 yards on 21 carries and scored a touchdown and Coleman rushed for 46 yards on six carries.

“I’ll just say we’re getting better and better every week,” Freeman said. “You know what I mean? It’s a process, and next week we’re going to get better.

And we’re going to rest the next week, and the next week coming back, we’re going to try to continue to get better.”

Freeman caught three passes for 32 yards and Coleman had three for 43 yards. Combined, the running backs had 33 touches from scrimmage for 227 yards and a touchdown.

“I thought we played well offensively,” Ryan

said. “Our offensive line did a fantastic job today, we ran the ball extremely efficiently, had some explosive chunk runs.”

Right tackle Ty Sambrailo, who was starting for Ryan Schraeder, gave up two sacks, but overall Ryan was pleased.

“They did a great job in pass protection against a defense who’s been getting a lot of pass pressure, pass rush the first two weeks,” Ryan said. “So I was proud of the way our offensive line played.”

Jones caught seven passes on 12 targets for 91 yards. But slot receiver Taylor Gabriel had an electrifying 40-yard touchdown on a screen pass. He finished with five catches for 79 yards.

“It was good to have Taylor (Gabriel) back, he really made some plays today,” Quinn said. “I thought on third downs, a nice touchdown on the screen, so for him, dealing with an injury in the offseason, it was awesome to see him back in action today. Kind of looking how all of us are accustomed to seeing that kind of speed.”

The Falcons’ offense recorded a season high 428 total yards, including 151 yards on the ground, also a season high. It was the second straight game the Falcons had rushed for more than 125 yards.

The Falcons also had two scoring drives of 10 plays or more, and now have seven drives of 10 plays or more this season.

Bears face Packers on short week The Sports Xchange LAKE FOREST, Ill. — Facing Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers is usually enough to put the Chicago Bears defense in panic mode.

Doing it on a short work week has become an undesired trend lately thanks to NFL schedule-makers, and doing it on the road

Thursday again without the veteran presence of Quintin Demps at safety makes it an especially difficult proposition.

“There’s not really much he can’t do as a quarterback on the football field,” Bears safety Adrian Amos said of Rodgers. “He can run, he can throw, he can throw on the run.”

Rodgers did all of those

against the Bears last year on one play when he scrambled and heaved a football 60 yards to a waiting Jordy Nelson and set up a game-winning field goal late in the fourth quarter.

Now the Bears secondary must figure a way to stop Rodgers in a short work week for the third straight year without

10-year veteran Demps because of a broken arm.

They signed Demps in free agency to help end their problems defending deep, but are back to relying on Amos at one safety spot.

Amos, who started in 2015 and 2016, will line up alongside rookie safety Eddie Jackson and it might seem an open invitation for the Packers to throw deep.

Nothing is more treasured to a college football team than experience at quarterback.

Well, at least that used to be something people said.

More true freshman quarterbacks than ever are arriving at the intersection of Readiness and Opportunity, and we’re only a season removed from one such player — Jalen Hurts — taking mighty Alabama to within a play of the national championship.

As this season takes shape after four full weeks, true freshman quarterbacks are influencing several major programs, which means their young minds and mettle, arms and legs, will hold sway over Power 5 conference races and, therefore, the College Football Playoff and the national title.

Which brings us to Georgia.

True freshman Jake Fromm — handed the reins after one of last year’s crop of true freshman quarterbacks, Jacob Eason, suffered a knee injury in the opener — helped guide the Bulldogs to a 31-3 rout of No. 17 Mississippi State on Saturday.

Georgia (4-0) has emerged as the clear favorite in the SEC East and a legit threat to top-ranked Alabama in a potential SEC title game matchup.

The Bulldogs have a great rushing attack, a veteran and fearsome defensive front seven … and Fromm, rated the No. 3 pro-style quarterback recruit in the nation in the 2017 class, according to the 247Sports composite rankings.

Fromm was 9 of 12 for 201 yards and two touchdowns in the team’s complete effort against Mississippi State. One of the incomplete passes was a throwaway. The others

were drops.

Fromm’s first pass of the game was a 59-yard touchdown strike to receiver Terry Godwin off a flea-flicker.

“The kid is stepping up,” Georgia coach Kirby Smart said. “He’s starting to play. He’s always had that in him. He’s a good leader. He did a good job managing the game.”

With the rise of quarterback summer camps and clinics and coaching “gurus,” more recruits than ever come in with a reasonable readiness to make the jump to hyperspace.

Other true freshman quarterbacks thrust into big-time opportunities in the first month are Florida State’s James Blackman (first career start in a loss at North Carolina State); Texas A&M’s Kellen Mond (325 total yards in an overtime victory over Arkansas) and Texas’ Sam Ehlinger (nearly pulled off the upset at USC two weeks ago).

And over at Alabama, true freshman backup Tua Tagovailoa is waiting — and quite possibly ready, given his relief effort in Saturday’s rout of Vanderbilt — should Hurts be hurt.

Fromm leads the young pack for now, rated 10th nationally in passer efficiency with a rating of 172.0. Eason — one of the “flavors of the month” last season as a true freshman — has yet be to medically cleared to return to game action, but he’s getting closer.

He won the job through spring and fall competition, but Fromm always intrigued because of his skill, vocal leadership and decisiveness. Eason might not get his job back.

“He’s a born leader,” Georgia senior running back Nick Chubb said of Fromm. “He plays hard.

He makes the right call.

He does everything we ask him to do. He’s a great kid.”

Lauren Wyton led Grayson (26-13, 3-1) in kills with 17, while Courtney Presley followed with 16 kills.

Archer ended its night a perfect 2-0 with a 25-10, 25-1 sweep of Alcovy in a non-area match. Archer has now won 15 of its last 18 matches.

world Russia threatens to block popular social media site Russia says it will ban Facebook in 2018 if the social network fails to comply with local data storage laws.

Alexander Zharov, head of communications regulator Roskomnadzor, was quoted by official state media outlets on Tuesday as saying “the law is obligatory for all.”

“In all cases we will make sure the law is complied with, or the company will stop working in the Russian Federation,” he said. “There are no exceptions here.”

Russia’s law on personal data storage came into effect in September 2015.

It requires companies that collect the personal data of citizens to store the information on Russian soil.

Zharov said his agency has not been in contact with Facebook, but added that the company needs to comply with the law soon.

Puerto Rico’s main airport is barely functioning The largest airport in Puerto Rico is still crippled almost a week after Hurricane Maria.

Passengers hoping to escape the devastation have packed the main terminal, which is has no air conditioning since it’s running on limited emergency power.

Because of damage to radar and other equipment at the airport, only 10 commercial flights between San Juan and the mainland United States could take off and land on Monday. Only 10 more are scheduled for Tuesday, airport authorities told CNNMoney. Airlines have started flying larger than normal planes to handle as many passengers as possible on the few flights that can get in and out. They have also capped fares.

Authorities hope to resume international flights today. They had originally aimed to do so on Monday.

Trump: I will go to Puerto Rico

President Donald Trump said he will travel to stormravaged Puerto Rico next Tuesday.

Speaking in the Roosevelt Room, Trump said it was the earliest date he could reach the devastated island due to first responders’ ongoing relief and recovery efforts.

Trump said the U.S. territory was “literally destroyed.”

“I know many Puerto Ricans, and they’re great people and we have to help them. It really was devastated.

Some people say, I read it this morning, it’s literally destroyed,” he said, adding, “The infrastructure was in bad shape as you know in Puerto Rico before the storm, and now in many cases, it has no infrastructure, so it’s, you’re really starting from almost scratch.”

Trump, speaking later Tuesday during a news conference alongside Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, said a “massive effort” is underway in Puerto Rico to help the flattened U.S. territory recover.

The federal government is “doing everything we can” to help the island’s hard hit people, Trump said. “All available federal resources, including the military, are being marshaled to save lives.”

He said he was directing all relevant federal agencies to participate in the recov-

The most recent diagnosis of the neurodegenerative brain disease’s was given to former New England Patriot Aaron Hernandez. But one of the biggest obstacles in understanding CTE has been the inability to diagnose it in the living. New

At the time, authorities said both pilots were conscious and alert, but didn’t provide further updates about their conditions. On Monday, officials said McLain underwent surgery at Gwinnett County

Medical Center after the crash. He spent several days in the hospital and is still recovering from his injuries.

Duncan also underwent surgery and was “recently transferred to the Shepherd Spinal Center in Atlanta,” according to Gwinnett County police Cpl. Deon Washington.

“He is currently paralyzed from the waist down,” Washington said.

“He is still having pain but is improving each day. He is working hard with the staff at Shepherd Spinal Center to get back to being as independent as possible.”

The department said Monday that it will host a golf tournament Oct. 2 at Chateau Elan. Proceeds from the tournament will be donated to Duncan.

“It is anticipated that his home will need to be modified to accommodate wheelchair access,” Washington said. “The Gwinnett County Police Department is a strong family and we will continue to support the recovery of both injured pilots.”

“I don’t remember as a freshman in high school having conversations about kinetic energy,” Gunckel said. “And they were excited about it.”

Georgia’s State Road and Tollway Authority recently received a Toll Excellence Award for a program it launched on the Interstate 85 corridor in 2015 to address congestion on the interstate.

The International Bridge, Tunnel and Turnpike Association chose SRTA as the recipient of the Presidents Award for its Commuter Credits Pilot Program. The program is designed to offer drivers an alternative to driving by themselves on the interstate during peak traffic hours.

pilot program,” SRTA executive director Chris Tomlinson said in a statement. “Results show us that commuters are willing to try new methods of transportation given the right incentive.

“We hope that transit agencies use our experience as a best practice to highlight the benefits of collaboration and cross promotion of services.”

State officials said the credits program was designed to get drivers to consider either riding transit systems such as Gwinnett County Transit or Xpress buses on I-85, shifting their driving schedules away from peak traffic times or participating in carpools.

The idea, at least in the transit option is to give

riders toll lane credits for taking buses rather than driving during peak hours.

The authority said the program has gone well enough that it is already planning to expand it next year when it opens the tolled Northwest Corridor Express Lanes on Interstate 75.

IBTTA executive director and CEO Patrick Jones praised the idea in a statement released through the authority.

“Whether you are driving in Atlanta or Dubai, the goals of providing customers with greater mobility and safety remain the same,” Jones said. “SRTA is implementing solutions to complex, global transportation challenges.”

The economic development group said there were five finalists in the Established Business category and three finalists in the Pre-Venture category.
