BOC OKs mysterious ‘Project Rocket’ BY CURT YEOMANS

Gwinnett County commissioners Tuesday approved a mysterious large distribution center near Stone Mountain that is expected to generate as many as 1,800 jobs in south Gwinnett. There has been speculation that the center will be an Amazon fulfillment cen-
ter, but county officials have stayed tight-lipped on which company is behind the facility and it has officially only been referred to as “Project Rocket.” The distribution center would be four stories tall and have 2.5 million square feet of space on West Park Place Boulevard, but it has drawn pushback from nearby residents who are concerned about its affect on the area.
A height variance for the project was approved 4-1, with Commissioner Tommy Hunter, whose district the center would be located in, voting against it. Due to Hunter’s opposition, Commissioner Jace Brooks made the motion to approve a height variance. “Obviously, Commissioner Hunter voted against this, so I kicked it off and made the motion mainly because I am very supportive
of economic development and am supportive of job growth here, so I felt it was important to move ahead,” Brooks said. “And it was a building increase which enabled us to make some conditions address some of the neighbors concerns.” A decision on the proposed facility — the land was already zoned for a Gwinnett County commissioners Tuesday OK’d the mysterious “Project Rocket” distribution center on the Gwin-

Ellie Mae stood quietly in the back left corner of the Gwinnett County Fair’s 4-H Farm Friends barn, party hat resting on her right ear. “She ate some of (her cupcake) and then got really mad about it,” said Kaitlyn Turner, 4-H program assistant. “I think it may have been that it wasn’t real cream cheese icing; it was fake cream cheese icing.” Though Turner could have easily been talking about a fussy child, instead, she was speaking about one of the

Farm Friends’ two miniature donkeys, one of whom celebrated her 8th birthday on Saturday. While two goats also celebrated their 3rd birthdays the same day, Ellie Mae was the star of the show, largely because eight years before, she was born in the very spot she occupied Saturday — 4-H’s barn at the fair.
Last year at this time, the Gwinnett Stripers were in the middle of their search for a new team name and identity. This year, the Atlanta Braves’ TripleA affiliate will be looking for new front office leadership. The Daily Post has learned that Stripers vice president and general manager North Johnson and assistant general manager Shari Massengill have both resigned. 4-H Farm Friends donkey Ellie Mae celebrated her 8th birthday
