TROPICAL STORM IRMA AFTERMATH

Some schools faced leaking, but no major damage so far BY CURT YEOMANS curt.yeomans@gwinnettdailypost.com

Gwinnett County Public Schools will be closed today as district officials work to get some campuses back in operation. Two major issues caused by Tropical Storm Irma in the county are the reason why classes will be canceled for a third day: blocked roads and widespread power outages. As of 5 p.m. Tuesday, eight schools were without power, down from 17 earlier in the day. But school officials said transportation also played a major role in the decision to cancel classes. “While we are certainly concered about the power issues, the transportation piece is the bigger concern,” district spokeswoman Sloan Roach said. “Primary roads (in Gwinnett) are clear but there are still some issues From left, Vlevins Dejohnette, 14, Dominic Lindsey, 12, and Phil Lindsey roll a log out of a neighbor’s yard in Lawrenceville on with secondary roads and our buses would be using them. On Tuesday afternoon, two men worked to remove three large loblolly pine trees from the roof of Nancy Ross’ Lawrenceville house — while she worked to figure out what she was going to do next. “I’ve lived in that house for 30 years,” Ross said. “That’s the first time this has happened.” Ross wasn’t alone. The extent of the damage caused by Tropical Storm Irma was a first for many Gwinnettians, who spent Tuesday removing the debris the storm left behind.
