Gomez, whose wife also works for the Port Authority, continued, sharing his story with residents Tuesday evening at a Duluth event honoring the victims, survivors and first responders of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

A well-known figure in the north Georgia winery business, as well as in the health care and car industries, died Tuesday morning.

Don Panoz, founder of the Elan Corporation, co-founder of Braselton’s Chateau Elan Winery and Resort and co-founder of Milan Pharmaceuticals (later renamed Mylan) died Don Panoz from complications due to pancreatic cancer, those close to him said. He was 83.

“Amidst 9/11 remembrances today, Don Panoz slipped quietly into eternity at 83,” said Georgia Public Service Commissioner Tim Echols. “RIP Don Panoz.

Grandfather. Great-Grandfather.”

Panoz, who is survived by his wife, Nancy, and their children and grandchildren, began his career in 1961 when he and fellow Army buddy, Milan “Mike” Puskar, founded Milan Pharmaceuticals in West Virginia.

While at the company, Panoz headed a research group that invented time-release medication through a transdermal patch, known as today’s nicotine patch.

The company, however, did not develop the patch, and Panoz left Mylan in 1969, moving his family to Ireland, which is where, in 1970, he created Elan Corporation.

The corporation later became a leader in drug delivery products and technology.

Nearly 15 years later in 1984, the Panoz family, who were still living in Ireland at the time, opened Chateau Elan in Braselton.

Due to a Gainesville research laboratory Elan Corporation operated at the time, the couple visited the north Georgia area frequently, and during one of their trips, the family tried Muscadine wine — a

“I knew Gwinnett Tech would be in the excellent and more than capable hands of our great leadership team, and I want to thank David Welden for

once again stepping in admirably as acting president during my stint at Georgia Piedmont,” Cannon said.

“I look forward to getting back full-time to our great faculty, staff and now 9,000 strong student body so we can continue the great work at the college and our significant role in ensuring the socio-economic success of our Gwinnett and North Fulton communities.”

Prior to assuming the presidency at Gwinnett Tech, Cannon was president of Chattahoochee Valley Community College in Phenix City, Ala. Cannon has more than 30 years of experience in finance, operations, and leadership in higher education at Georgia technical colleges.

Cannon has been the acting president at Gwinnett Tech since 2014.

Warrants were taken out for Davis’ arrest in June and he was arrested the same day. He has been in the Gwinnett County jail since his arrest.

Georgia Gwinnett College is among the 10 best public regional colleges in the south, according to new rankings released

by U.S. News and World Report.

The Lawrencevillebased college was tied at No. 10 on the Top Public Regional Colleges South category list compiled by the publication for its 2019 Best Colleges rankings. It was tied at No. 52 for in the overall top Regional Colleges South category, which includes both public and private institutions.

U.S. News and World Report also ranked it between No. 458 and No. 503 among business programs, although its exact place in that ranking was not provided.

High Point University in North Carolina was ranked as the overall No. 1 school in the Regional Colleges South category.

The Regional Colleges South category is for smaller colleges in the south and therefore different from the

National Universities category, which includes the University of Georgia, Georgia Tech, Emory University, Georgia State University, Georgia Southern University, Kennesaw State University, Mercer University, Augusta University, the University of West Georgia and Valdosta State University.

In the overall top National Universities rankings, Emory was ranked No. 21, Georgia Tech was tied for No. 35 while UGA was tied for No. 46, Mercer was tied for No. 140 and Georgia State was tied for No. 187. Augusta University, Georgia Southern, Kennesaw State, West Georgia and Valdosta State were ranked in the No. 230 to No. 301 range where school’s individual rankings are not provided.

Princeton University in New Jersey was ranked the No. 1 school in the national universities category.

Meanwhile, the University of North Georgia, which has campuses in Cumming and Gainesville among its five locations, was tied for No. 58 in the overall top Regional Universities South category.

Across the nation on Tuesday, local governments, schools, churches and other establishments honored those who died in the 2001 attacks, along with the men and women who worked to rebuild the nation following the tragedy.

While Duluth also remembered Sept. 11, the city did it differently than in past years, this year having Gomez, a member of the Port Authority’s Emergency Services Unit,

share his story along with Duluth artist Kathy Fincher, who painted “The Dream Keepers,” a tribute to the children left behind after 9/11.

The painting, which hangs in the George W. Bush Presidential Library, is temporarily on loan to the Hudgens Center for special Sept. 11 memorial activities, is the basis for Duluth’s “The Dream Keepers 9/11 Monument,” a three-dimensional recreation of the Fincher’s painting.

Last summer, Gomez authorized a flag to be flown over Ground Zero in honor of Duluth’s dedication of the monument. The flag was then presented to the city’s first responders.

On Tuesday, Gomez again returned to Duluth to share his story — and the stories of the 2,996 men, women and children who perished in 2001.

While emphasizing that the attacks were, and continue to be, a tragedy, Gomez stressed the good that came from the attacks — namely, what the United States can, and did, accomplish in the face of such horror.

If there was room for another ride or booth out there, I’m sure the ride company would be wanting to bring it in. We’ve packed a lot in, and what’s amazing is when you’ve seen it empty, and then you see everything there, it looks like a different place.”

In total, the 10-day fair, which Thurman estimates is the second-largest in the state, is expected to host

Owen Cloyd “Red” Ashbaugh, age 89, of Locust Grove, Georgia passed away on Sunday, September 9, 2018. Owen was born August 12, 1929 in Grover Hill, Ohio to the late David Lawrence and Cora Pauline Ashbaugh.

Red loved gathering with his family at Lake Sinclair and being on the boat. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed playing with the seniors at Summit Chase Golf Course. Red retired as a plant manager from Aeroquip Corporation after 35 years.

Owen is survived by his loving wife of 68 years: Cara Lou Ashbaugh; daughters: Debby (Steve) Snyder, Diane (Bill) Shearer, Donna (Harold) Utt; grandchildren: Erica (Jay) Morris, Lora (Rene Sejas) Synder, Andy Shearer, Shelly (Nick) Smith; great grandchildren: Katie Morris, Cara Morris, Addy Kate Shearer, Lincoln Smith, Kane Smith; brother: Doyle Ashbaugh and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

A Funeral Service for Red will be held on Thursday, September 13, 2018 at 11:30 a.m. in the Chapel of Haisten Funeral Home in McDonough, GA., with Rev. Steve Mason officiating. The family will receive friends from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

The family would like to invite all attendees for a light lunch following the service.

She was also blessed with four great-great grandchildren Emma, Haleigh, Nathan and Weston and twins arriving in 2019 to Michael & Kait. Helen was a founding member of Winters Chapel Baptist Church in Peachtree Corners.

She and her husband were solely responsible for the presence of the church on its current property as they mortgaged their house to secure a loan to buy the property. Some of her fondest memories were of helping paint pews and picking out lighting for the Sanctuary. After graduating from high school, she went to business college in Columbia, SC. She worked full time as a Secretary throughout her life and even worked part-time until she was 77 years old at a CPA firm. After retirement she stayed involved with special trips with

about a quarter of a million people. “(We’re) second to the Georgia National Fair in Perry, which is the only fair that gets tax dollars and is run and owned by the state,” Thurman said. “We’re not county (owned); we’re private, so we have to make a living. But we feel like we do a good job with having a lot of things for people to do.”

Some of those include a bicycle thrill show, a small circus, a butterfly house that was last at the fair four or five years ago, pageants and performances and, of

course, livestock shows and viewing.

“I think pretty much every day there will be some kind of livestock show in the arena,” Thurman said.

“It’s all fun, though, and it’s great to see (the children) come through the gate and they’re pulling their parents.

They see the bright lights and all the rides and they’re like, ‘let’s get there, let’s do that’ and it’s just great.

“What we’re doing (Tuesday), though, is building the city, and the night of the 23rd, the city goes away and things go back to normal. It’s all fun.”

Pluto should never have been downgraded, say some scientists

Make Pluto great again?

That seems to be the aim of a new study that urges Pluto be returned to its former planetary glory.

The research, published in the scientific journal Icarus, said Pluto never should have been downgraded from a planet to a dwarf planet 12 years ago.

Let’s back up to 2006. That’s when the International Astronomical Union, the group that gets to name planetary bodies, established updated rules for what is and what isn’t a planet.

The IAU defined a planet as

a celestial body that orbits the sun, is round or nearly round and “clears the neighborhood” around its orbit.

It’s that last part that’s in dispute. The IAU said Pluto was just too small to clear the neighborhood, or knock other space rocks out of its path as it orbits the sun. And so, the astronomical union demoted Pluto to dwarf planet status.

Philip Metzger has a problem

with that. He’s a University of Central Florida planetary scientist and lead author on the study.

“The IAU definition would say that the fundamental object of planetary science, the planet, is supposed to be defined on the basis of a concept that nobody uses in their research,” Metzger said in a statement on the school’s website.

Metzger and his team looked

at more than two centuries’ worth of research and found just one study, from the early 19th century, that employed the orbit-clearing standard the IAU used to downgrade Pluto.

And, Metzger said, the standard used to classify planets changed in the 1950s after astronomer Gerard Kuiper said what really determines what is and what isn’t a planet is how a celestial body is formed.

Duke-bound Collins a key bat in Peachtree Ridge softball lineup

Felise Collins is one of seven seniors on the current Peachtree Ridge softball roster who played as freshmen in 2015, when the team went 7-20.

The young Lions rose steadily over the next two seasons and reached the state playoffs, though they would have liked a better finish in a difficult region — they finished fifth in Region 6-AAAAAAA last year and earned an at-large bid to state. They also lost in the opening round of the playoffs both seasons.

Their goals are higher this year, particularly for the big group of seniors.

“I think everybody’s working together a lot more (this season),” Collins said. “Everbody’s hitting, stringing stuff together, fielding and making the plays we’re supposed to make. That’s improved a lot this year. … Right now we are focused on a winning record.

We’re also looking to go further in the postseason than we did these past few years. We’re trying to make it to maybe the second or third round. I think we’ve got it this year. I think we can do it.”

Monica Daab Monica Daab is in her second year as the girls cross country head coach at Collins Hill. In this installment of “Getting to Know,” the 2009 Peachtree Ridge grad talks with staff writer Christine Troyke about a variety of topics, including being mentored by longtime Collins Hill cross country coach Andrew Hudson, not thinking twice about her college decision and finding some quiet on a beach in Bora Bora.

CT: Where did you grow up?

MD: I grew up in Lawrenceville.

Just down the street from here, actually. I went to Peachtree Ridge High School. I was born in Pittsburgh, but moved here when I was 2 1/2 and grew up in Gwinnett.

CT: Did your folks give you Pittsburgh sports loyalties?

MD: So, I am a fan of the Steelers.

It’s my favorite NFL team. But my college football love is UGA. I’m a double ‘Dog. I got my master’s of science degree from there (after undergrad).

CT: What sports were you into growing up?

MD: My dad was really good about getting me and my sister into trying a bunch of different sports. But what we both ended up loving was swimming.

I did that for about 16 years competitively from when I was 5 to 18 or 19.

For the first year of my undergrad degree, I swam club at UGA. CT: Was there any debating about where you wanted to go to college?

MD: No. I got in on early admission for UGA and as soon as I got accepted, my best friend and I looked at each other and were like, “Roommates.” It was a great experience.

I knew right away, as soon as I got accepted to Georgia, that I was going there and I was going to have a good time with it. And I did.

CT: When you headed off to school, was teaching and coaching the plan?

MD: No, no it wasn’t. I got my undergrad degree in exercise science so that I could, potentially, pursue being a physical therapist. That’s what I thought I wanted to do.

Toward the end of my undergrad career, I spoke with one of my professors, who gave me the opportunity to pursue my master’s degree in kinesiology with an emphasis on motor behavior. I love that whole class and that study.

My mentor, my advisor, my professor was such an inspiration to me that when I graduated from there, I didn’t know right away that I wanted See DAAB, Page 5B

While several factors have gotten better since back-to-back losses against Shiloh and Meadowcreek, the one glaring bright spot involves turnovers. The Wildcats have taken care of the football much better than their opposition, flipping around what happened in their two losses to open the season. “(Last Friday’s win) was good,” Swank said.

actually won the turnover battle for the first time this season. We had way too many penalties, which we have to fix. But all in all, the kids played well. …

The biggest improvement is turnovers. We were minus-8 (on turnovers) after our first two games. You can’t even compete when it’s like that.”

The back-to-back victories are encouraging to the Duluth players and to Swank, in his fourth

season as head of the program. Year 4 has been a threshold for Wildcat head coaches — the last head coach to stay longer than four seasons was Mike Strickland from 1991-97.

Strickland led the program to its last winning season in 1995.

Swank doesn’t have a winning record yet, but he has pushed the victory total by one yearly since he took over the rebuilding effort. His team, 3-7

last year, is hopeful of a strong finish when region play begins Sept. 21 (the Wildcats have a bye this Friday).

“Hopefully, we’ll get a few more (wins this season),” Swank said.

Earnhardt enjoys broadcast booth

SPEEDWAY, Ind. — Eight races into his NBC Sports broadcasting gig, Dale Earnhardt Jr. conceded it’s been a legitimate learning experience, but he’s loving the opportunity and figuring out how to be a good student of the occupation.

This weekend, the twotime Daytona 500 winner will drive the Chevrolet pace car prior to the start of Monday’s rain-delayed Big Machine Vodka 400 at the Brickyard — a first-time opportunity for Earnhardt at the historic track and one that he is genuinely excited about.

“I was asked if I would be interested in doing that and it’s such an historic race track and a big race for the series, plus the relationship with Chevrolet that I’ve had for years, it just made a lot of sense to me, as long as everybody with NBC and with the

broadcast didn’t mind,’’ Earnhardt said Sunday morning trackside.

“Obviously, I’ll miss the front end of the show and probably won’t get up into Turn 2 until a few laps into the race, but we’ve got a plan to make sure all that is real smooth. So it will be good. It will be a bit of a bucket-list kind of item for me, and I’m looking forward to it.”

Earnhardt will be making another “first” in two weeks at Richmond International Raceway.

Although he has retired from fulltime racing, he will be making a one-race start in a JR Motorsports Chevrolet in the Sept. 21 Xfinity Series race at the track.

It will be his first NASCAR start since he climbed out of his Hendrick Motorsports No. 88 after the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series season finale in Homestead, Florida, last November.

•From Page 1B to be a teacher, but there were definite signs that I should have listened to. It was a great experience — I just wish I would have figured it out earlier. I wish I would have just listened to myself and listened to the signs and figured it out.

Because I love teaching, I love coaching. The mentorship of it all, it’s indescribable. I guess it’s how you feel when you love your job. (laughing) CT: What did you do before you came to teaching?

MD: I was a substitute teacher for a whole year before I became a fulltime teacher last year.

Before that, I worked for a little over a year as a registered behavior technician in Florida. I performed applied behavior analysis techniques for children who needed behavioral interventions, activity of daily living type of interventions, for really little kids. The range was from about 2 to 11. It was actually where I found out that I wanted to be some type of teacher and help.

CT: How did you pursue the teaching angle?

MD: My husband and I discussed it and he said, “Try being a substitute and if you love it, then you love being a teacher.” After my first day, I came home and I was like “I love this. I love this! It’s so amazing. You get to be with the kids and you get to talk to them.” It was a really good experience. He said, “You found what you want to do.”

So then I went through the whole, what do I have to do to apply? How do I become a teacher? I reached out to my contacts and people I knew from growing up in the

school system here. I got a lot of mentorship and I have a lot of people who really helped me through the process. I would willingly give to anyone who wanted to become a teacher because it is a tough process.

CT: You subbed for a whole year in Gwinnett County and then a job opened (at Collins Hill)?

MD: I was a longterm sub for most of January 2017. That’s when I met my department heads for science here. They took me around and I got some good study tips for taking the science GACEs (Georgia Assessments for the Certification of Educators). They helped me with resources and study material from their classes — bio, chem, physics.

Then the science department heads reached out to me. They had a position open and after going through the job fair, keeping in contact with the administration here, making sure they knew my face, they offered me the physics position and I took it without even thinking twice.

This school is absolutely amazing.

CT: What about the cross country coaching?

MD: That came to me after I was offered and accepted the position as a teacher. The head cross country coach (Andrew Hudson) reached out to me and heard I was interested in doing some type of coaching. I didn’t have any experience in cross country, but I do have what would be the equivalent of six years of exercise science knowledge that I bring to the table. He asked me if I was open to being technically the assistant to the whole team, but the girls head cross coun-

try coach. He definitely runs things and I’ve been taking it as a mentor type of situation where I’m learning from him. I know some things, but he has more experience.

He’s been a great mentor and a great role model for all of our kids.

CT: How’s the team doing so far this season?

MD: Phenomenal.

They’re putting 110 percent into practices. The respect is off the charts.

Our runners are top notch. The hard work, you can see it in their practices. They’re putting forth the effort and we can see it.

CT: What is your husband’s name?

MD: Charles Daab IV. He’s actually an alum of Collins Hill.

CT: What’s your maiden name?

MD: Sakalik.

CT: How did you guys meet?

MD: We met when I was working as a lifeguard. We worked together. We were friends and dated other people.

Then right after I finished my undergrad degree, we were both in the right place to start dating and just realized we were meant to be together.

He’s my other half. I always look to him. Even for academic stuff, he’s a big science person, too, so he helps me with ideas and creative things like that. He’s the best thing that’s ever happened to me. For sure.

CT: Did you have an official first date?

MD: We did. He took me out dancing.

CT: What kind of music do you usually listen to?

MD: All types. I like the 90s hits, some of the 80s hits, rap, R&B, hiphop, pop. Some country, but, I mean, I can count

on maybe both hands how many songs I like.

And alternative rock and I guess some would call it punk rock. I just like a lot of different songs.

CT: Have you bingewatched anything lately?

MD: All of the episodes of “Psych” and then “Jack Ryan” new on Prime. That was a really good one.

CT: What’s the next vacation spot you’d pick if money where not an issue?

MD: Fiji. Or Bora Bora. Staying on those huts on the water. I’m thinking the peace and quiet. I like to get away from the noise when I’m on vacation.

CT: Do you have a go-to comfort food?

MD: It depends on my mood, but if it’s comfort food, it’s pizza or lasagna or spaghetti. My mother’s family is mostly Italian and so I grew up with the staples. But pizza is probably the top one.

CT: If you could have a dinner party with anyone, who would you invite?

MD: I would want to have dinner with my two grandmothers, Josephine Sakalik and Marie Hotsur. I was very close to both of my grandmothers and both women had a big influence in molding me into the person I am today. I love and miss them both dearly and would love the opportunity to see and talk to them one last time.

The third person I would want at the dinner would be my husband, Charles Daab. My grandmothers never got to meet him before we started dating, got married and I would love to sit down with them and have them meet him and talk with both of us.

Obama’s arguments fall flat

He’s back! President Obama has emerged from his supposed cloistered life to attack President Trump. Obama broke with a tradition apparently only modern Republican ex-presidents follow, which is not to speak ill of your successor.

Obama, who reportedly has been running his “Organizing for America” operation, along with his White House aide Valerie Jarrett from his expensive home in a Washington neighborhood, spoke Cal to a group Thomas of University of Illinois students last Friday, claiming it was his policies, not those of President Trump, that have produced the current economic boom.

“When you hear how great the economy’s doing right now, let’s just remember when this recovery started,” Obama said.

But during the Obama administration, the Gross Domestic Product never exceeded 3 percent. Obama said the days of strong economic growth were behind us, that many manufacturing jobs were lost and not returning and that candidate Trump’s prediction of 4 percent economic growth was fantasy. In the second quarter of this year, it exceeded 4 percent and manufacturing jobs are making a comeback.

By the time Obama left office, the unemployment rate had declined from a high approaching 8 percent at the start of his administration to just under 5 percent, but was beginning to tick back upward, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

In less than two years of the Trump administration, the nation has effectively gained full employment (3.9 percent unemployment rate) with minority unemployment reaching record lows.

Obama should receive some credit for the way his administration helped the country after the 2007 recession, but not all the credit he now claims for himself.

Hourly earnings, which were largely stagnant during the Obama years, have increased an average 2.9 percent over the last year.

Obama’s speech was part of a carefully coordinated strategy to win back a House majority for Democrats. This has included demonstrators at the hearings for Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh; the Bob Woodward book “Fear” and the daily and sometimes hourly torrent of anti-Trump invective from the major media, which see impeachment as their only hope of returning the establishment to power.

Trump did himself a favor by not responding to Obama’s speech in kind.

Instead of taking to Twitter for a blistering attack, he joked that Obama’s speech put him to sleep.

The president did something last week I have long urged him to do. Statistics are dry. Show people who have jobs they couldn’t find during the Obama years.

In a speech in North Dakota, the president brought a man onstage who thanked him for his economic policies that allowed the man to go back to work.

Here’s how The Daily Caller reported the story: “The man told a story about the coal industry under Obama and how ‘the coal industry absolutely had the boot of government on its throat.’ “‘Many, many jobs were lost,’ the coal miner said, ‘and many towns were destroyed by this. It was just a horrible thing. Horrible suffering happened in this country. Really for made-up reasons, I think. And what your administration does — has done — is bringing us back to life.’”

The audience cheered.

This is the way to counter the resistance. Keep showcasing people who were unemployed during the Obama years, but now have jobs. The president should then say if Democrats win a congressional majority they will stifle his successes and try to return to the failed policies of the past.

The Democrats’ sad circus I love Lindsay Graham.

The witty South Carolina senator, who’s usually more entertaining than most comedians, has been one of the highlights of the otherwise depressing televised Senate confirmation hearings for Supreme Court nominee Judge Brett Kavanaugh.

Graham put it perfectly Thursday morning. He said some people had been coming up to him and asking if this week’s ugly display of disruptions, rude moronic outbursts from the gallery and Democrat grandstanding had become a circus.

“I’m here to defend circuses,” Graham said, pointing out that it was safe for parents to take their kids to the circus but not to let them watch Senate confirmation hearings — as Judge Kavanaugh found out Tuesday when his daughters had to be taken out of the raucous chamber.

The Democrat circus’ acts included rookie Corey Booker of New Jersey pandering to his base with his cliched leftist ravings.

Then on Thursday, Booker dramatically announced that he would deliberately break the Senate’s rules and release “confidential” documents that would risk his expulsion from the Senate.

Booker, who showed the whole country why he’s never

It’s been sad to watch what dumb things self-serving Senate Democrats like him are willing to do to discredit a highly qualified nominee like Kavanaugh.

Booker and my senator, Kamala Harris of California, were more interested in creating “tough guy” videos for their 2020 presidential runs than engaging in serious constitutional discussions.

The Democrats are acting like circus clowns, because they and their progressive allies in the liberal media are scared to death of Judge Kavanaugh.

He’s not their kind of guy. He’s someone who wants to strictly follow the Constitution, not evade it or misinterpret it or rewrite it.

I hope the American people see the Democrats for what

they are — sore losers with no ideas and no plan. They still want to impeach the president even though there is no impeachable offense.

Bob Woodward’s gossip book, “Fear,” came out this week, and the Trump haters went nuts. But most of it was old or fake news, and there is nothing impeachable in it.

It’s the same deal for that anonymous op-ed from a Trump staffer that the New York Times ran Wednesday. There’s nothing new or impeachable in it, despite the desperate excitement of CNN, the Washington Post and Joe Scarborough.

Every president’s administration has had people who don’t agree with his behavior or policies. A few of them will leak or snitch or lie to the media.

What we have today in Washington is that there are lots of anti-Trump people who can get printed anywhere. It doesn’t matter what the New York Times’ op-ed or Woodward’s book says, however, because there’s still nothing impeachable.

For those people who say they don’t like Trump personally, I get that. Paying off two women to keep their silence about things that happened long before he was elected is not a good reflection on his personal morals. But it’s not an impeachable offense.

We know President Trump brings a lot of deserved criticism on himself. But again, I remind you: No one liked Ty Cobb, and he’s in the Hall of Fame.

So let’s put this in perspective — which the liberal media rarely ever give us. After less than two years of President Trump, the economy is booming. Unemployment is down.

Taxes and regulations have been cut. In the end, the president is doing everything he promised he’d do — including naming strict constitutionalists to the Supreme Court and other federal benches.

This week, we’ve been watching Trump’s legacy being constructed. It’ll live on at the Supreme Court for decades, because, as a recent president said, “Elections have consequences.”

So while Booker and the other members of the Democratic circus cry and make clowns of themselves on national TV, let me be the first to congratulate Judge Kavanaugh on his appointment to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Before the answering machine’s widespread adoption, people answered their landline phones with a pleasant “hello,” eager to learn who was calling. To be sure, says social scientist James Katz, answering machines were considered rude in the ’70s.

By the ’90s, however, most homes had them and lots of people were using them, quite rudely, to screen calls — people like my pal, Griffy. Calls to Griffy’s landline always made me grumpy: “Hello, this is Griffy, leave a message at the beep.”

Griffy demanded his friends leave messages on his machine, but always hung up on mine — until the invention of the “star 69” feature. When you punched “star 69” into your phone keypad, you’d get the number of the jerk who had last hung up on your machine.

To wit: Technology is making it easier than ever to be rude to our fellow man, but we must fight this impulse, or else our already overheated public discourse will become increasingly uncivil.

It’s not going to be easy, though. Even my parents use their answering machine to screen calls from my sisters and me.

Collins hopes to offer the same strengths to Duke that she has at Peachtree Ridge and in travel softball.

“She brings some intensity,” Wilson said. “She’s still improving. I think her game has really got some more upside to it. She’s come a long way from a ninth-grader to where she is now. She’s a confident player and she’s fun to coach.”

Before college softball, Collins and her teammates want to finish their final high school season better than ever. No matter how it ends, softball, both at the high school and travel levels, has been a blast, she said.

“We’ve got five senior offensive linemen, so we figured we better run the ball (this season),” Swank said.

The on-field success even netted some offthe-field accolades from

the Atlanta Falcons, who made Duluth its team of the week. Prior to Sunday’s Falcons vs. Carolina Panthers game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, the 25 Wildcats will lead the Atlanta players onto the field.

“That will be fun,” Swank said. “A lot of them have never been to a Falcons game before.”

Watson’s injury not as serious as feared The scene was scary Friday at Marietta when Grayson defensive back Kenyatta Watson was taken off the field after a head injury.

According to his father and Gryason recruiting coordinator Kenyatta Watson, his son was struck in the neck area behind his right ear by a knee. He did not lose conciseness procedures Friday night were mostly precautionary.

Watson was back in practice Monday afternoon.
