Physicians Guide Seniors benefit from physical fitness It may have been a few years since your glory days as the first-string quarterback or star of the track team, but if you are a senior you shouldn’t let advancing age prevent you from being active. Just because you’re getting older doesn’t mean that it’s too late to get in shape or stay in shape. In fact, research shows that older people who have never exercised can still benefit from physical conditioning. By starting a regular exercise program, you can help prevent coronary artery disease, high blood pressure, stroke, diabetes, depression and some cancer. Physical fitness reduces the effects of osteoporosis and arthritis — two conditions which can severely limit an older person’s lifestyle. Being in good shape physically can help you remain independent as you age and improve the quality of your life.

So how do you get started with a fitness regime if you’re older and haven’t been active? First, talk to your doctor. While you can begin an exercise program at any age, certain medical conditions such as cardiac problems, lung disease, diabetes, etc., mean that your progress needs to be monitored.

After establishing a medical base line, you will need to start slowly so you will be less likely to injure yourself. Remember to begin with low-intensity workouts and gradually work your way up. Wear comfort-

able clothes, the appropriate shoes for the activity, and be sure to drink plenty of water before, during and after exercising. Your doctor can help you determine which type of exercise is best for you and give you advice on how to make the most of your exercise program.

Planning Your Exercise Program Your program should include aerobic exercise, weight or strength training and exercises for flexibility. Aerobic exercise helps strengthen your heart and helps maintain lung capacity. Aerobic exercise may slow or prevent the buildup of plaque in your arteries and veins (atherosclerosis) and ward of hardening of the arteries by keeping them flexible. Sustained aerobic exercise may help control Type II diabetes by helping your body metabolize sucrose.

Weight or strength training helps strengthen your bones and muscles and may help lower your cholesterol. Weight training improves the strength of your ligaments and tendons so that less stress is placed on your joints.

Tufts University completed two studies on the benefits of strength training.

One study showed that older adults with osteoarthritis who participated in a 16week strength training program were able

to decrease their pain by 43 percent while increasing muscle strength. A second study focused on post-menopausal women. After menopause, women can lose up to 2 percent of their bone mass each year. The Tufts study found that women who did progressive strength training two days a week had a 1 percent gain in hip and spine bone density, a 75 percent increase in strength and a 13 percent increase in balance. Improving overall strength and balance through strength training may help reduce the risk for falls and decrease the number of fractures.

Flexibility training or stretching helps you improve the range of motion for your joints. In addition to your wrists, elbows, shoulders, hips, knees and ankles, stretching can help your back. Flexibility exercises can ease stiffness that often is associated with aging. Physical activity may keep arthritic joints from freezing. You should remember that becoming more flexible takes time. Do your stretching slowly and gently at first to prevent injury.

Getting Started For many people the easiest way to get started and stay with an exercise program is to join a class, gym or fitness center. Fitness centers may offer certified personal trainers who can help design a program that meets

your needs and takes your health conditions into account. You will get the maximum benefit from an exercise program if you work out on a regular basis. Make participating in an active lifestyle a priority, easy, safe, interesting and fun. As you become more active, you will notice that you have more energy, it is easier to do your daily activities, and chasing after your grandchildren doesn’t get you out of breath as quickly.

5 ways to quash stress

Essure procedure offers peace of mind The Essure procedure, offered by Greystone OB/GYN in Conyers, is the first and only FDA approved permanent birth control procedure to have zero pregnancies in clinical trials.

This new procedure, which can be performed in the doctor’s office without incisions or scarring, was found to be 99.80 percent effective during four years of clinical trials. Just about everyone at some point in time has experienced stress. Some suffer from stress powerful enough to have profound effects on daily life and personal health. A variety of strategies, from medication to meditation, can be effective at relieveing stress.

Stress can have distinct effects on health. Heart attacks, hypertension, immune system disorders, anxiety, and depression have all been linked to excessive stress.

Reducing stress has become a priority for many people. Here’s a look at five of them.

1. Progressive muscle relaxation: A person starts from the face and works down the body by tensing all of the muscles in specific areas while inhaling and holding breath. Then he or she relaxs the muscles while exhaling.

2. Guided imagery: With the help of a recording or one’s own imagination, a person pictures a relaxing scene with a possible guide answering profound questions.

3. Laughter: Laughing reduces the level of stress hormones, like epinephrine, dopamine, cortisol and others. It also increases endorphins.

Laughter is a good distraction and also a mild workout. It contracts the ab muscles and works out the shoulders.

5. Sex: Sex can boost mood, reduce bood pressure, promote relaxation through touch and provide a physical workout. All of these factors are good for reducing stress.

Physicians Guide Sedation Dentistry Sedation dentistry is used to provide a relaxing and anxiety-free experience for certain people receiving dental treatment. It enables individuals too afraid to go to the dentist to receive the dental care they need while avoiding the common apprehension known as dental phobia.

According to to the Dental Organization for Conscious Sedation (DOCS Education), a professional dental organization dedicated to ensuring that patients receive safe, comfortable and anxiety-free dental care, 30 percent of the population avoids the dentist due to fear. This all-too-common "dental phobia" prevents people from receiving necessary routine dental care, potentially compromising the health and functionality of their mouth and smile.

What Is Sedation?

Sedation is a process used to establish a relaxed, easy and calm state through the use of sedatives. Sedative drugs (tranquillizers, depressants, anti-anxiety medications, nitrous oxide, etc.) can be administered in a variety of ways. In the past, intravenous (IV) sedation – sedatives delivered via injection into the blood vessels of the hand or arm – was predominantly used to sedate a dental patient.

IV sedation is both safe and effective when administered by a trained professional. Today, however, sedation dentistry has evolved

to be even more conducive to a relaxing experience. Patients have alternatives to the traditional modalities of inhalation (nitrous oxide or "laughing gas") and IVs, such as those offering a "no needle" (meaning, no injection) approach that many people find more appealing.

Oral sedation dentistry is now the most common technique used in the United States and Canada to quell patient fears. The technique is easy and requires no needles. Best of all, the medications create such a comfortable experience that most patients do not remember the visit; it is as if they slept through the treatment. Although some forms of sedation (such as nitrous oxide gas) may raise your threshold for pain, most dental treatments still require a local anesthetic injected in the mouth, even when sedation dentistry techniques are performed.

This local anesthetic will temporarily block pain impulses from the affected teeth and gum tissue. However, this injection will occur after you are already sedated and comfortable, so most likely you won't be bothered by or remember the sensation of having the injection.

Regardless of the type of sedation dentistry you receive, it is important to have a responsible caregiver accompany you to the procedure (and drive you there if you must take oral medication before arriving for your appointment). The caregiver should drive you home after the procedure is complete and stay with you for an additional two to four hours at home.

Benefits of Sedation Dentistry One of the major benefits of sedation dentistry is that people often feel like their dental procedure lasts only a few minutes, when in fact it might have taken hours to perform.

Therefore, complex dental procedures such as smile makeovers or extensive rebuilding procedures that normally require multiple visits can often be performed in fewer appointments.

If you are reluctant to change the appearance of your smile because you are afraid or anxious about undergoing long or complicated dental procedures, sedation dentistry can make you feel comfortable during the treatment process and help you achieve a smile you can be proud of.

Also, because sedation dentistry addresses some of the fears that keep people from going to the dentist on a regular basis, sedation dentistry patients are more likely to receive recommended routine care. As a result, they are less likely to neglect their oral health or

allow oral health problems to build to the point when drastic dental treatments become necessary.

Sleep Dentistry or Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry has occasionally been dubbed sleep dentistry, but this term is misleading. In actual fact, you do not sleep during the procedure, but because of the effects produced by the sedative, you may feel sleepy.

Sedation dentistry enables you to be kept awake throughout the entire procedure, but you will feel relaxed and likely won't remember much about your treatment. The use of general anesthesia is not considered sedation dentistry.

Does Insurance Cover Sedation Dentistry?

According to DOCS Education, insurance companies do not pay for sedation; however, some non-intravenous sedation procedure codes may apply to your treatment.

For example, if you are undergoing periodontal scaling and root planing of all four quadrants of your mouth, insurance companies may cover the costs of this procedure if it is completed in one appointment if you are sedated, rather than requiring you to stretch out the procedure to four separate appointments.

Learning About COPD Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease affects thousands of people each and every year. The condition is largely caused by smoking or prolonged inhalation of lung irritants. There currently is no cure, but there are treatments available that can slow the progression of the disease.

COPD is a term used to categorize many different ailments of the lungs, most especially emphysema and chronic bronchitis. It occurs when there is airway obstruction or simply when a person has trouble breathing.

There are certain contributors to COPD. These may include: • Inflammation of the air passages that restricts airflow.

• Excessive mucous that restricts airflow.

• Air sacs, called alveoli, lose elasticity and cannot properly inflate with air.

• Damaged walls between air sacs that compromise breathing.

According to the pharmaceutical company Merck, about 12 million people in the United States suffer from COPD. It is second only to heart disease as a cause of disability that forces people to stop working. COPD is the fourth most common cause of death, accounting for more than 120,000 deaths per NewBeginnings 4x5 0626 6/8/11 year in the United States, and those death rates are on the rise, with 60 percent more

deaths now attributed to COPD than there were 20 years ago. Men and women have equal death rates, though men are at a heightened risk for the disease.

In terms of treating COPD, treatment options generally hope to lessen the severity of the symptoms. Quitting smoking is the single-most effective way to reduce the progression of the disease. Since COPD is a progressive disorder, it will only get worse over time and could lead to death.

Doctors may prescribe medications for individuals with trouble breathing. Bronchodilators relax the muscles around the airways, helping to open them up and make breathing easier. Inhaled glucocorticosteroids also may be prescribed. These reduce inflammation in the airways to help improve airflow.
