Minnie Davis knew something was wrong when she woke one morning to find a lump in her armpit. “I felt this nodule and that’s when I went, ‘OK, I need to go online and Google this,’” she said. “I looked on Doctor Google and there was so much all over the place, so that’s when I started getting scared. I went to the doctor and one thing led to another and I ended up getting a mammogram at Gwinnett Medical (Center). They said they saw something and they needed further testing.” Though Davis never thought that she would ultimately be diagnosed with breast cancer, the 44-year-old tells her story as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which falls in the month of October, and to raise awareness about the disease and its frequency. She also tells her story so women will act on any inklings they may have that something isn’t right — something she didn’t do until she woke up with the node in her armpit, despite her suspicions having been aroused several weeks earlier when she and her boyfriend were horsing around one night. “It was around Valentine’s Day (2017) and we were wrestling and he (tossed) me down on the bed and I landed on my chest,” she said. “I had on my shirt and my bra, so even though I was like, ‘Man, that hurt my right breast, this is weird,’ I (thought) maybe it was the bra or shirt. What’s been a great year for the Infinite Energy Arena got even better on Tuesday when the facility was named to Billboard’s 2018 Arena Power List. The Gwinnett arena came in at No. 8 in the top 10 arenas in the 10,001- to 15,000seat capacity. According to Billboard, the rankings are based on a 12-month gross of total ticket sales reported to Boxscore between June 20, 2017, and June 17, 2018. Billboard credited the Infinite Energy Center with a gross of $25.5 million during that time frame. The rankings include venues from the United States, Europe and Australia. Joey Dennis, general manager for the Infinite Energy Arena, told Billboard: “I love to get bands in here that have never played this (venue) because they really are blown away by how cool this

Simpson Elementary School in Peachtree Corners is a 2018 National Blue Ribbon School. School officials learned of the honor Monday after an announcement by U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos. The school is one of 13 in the state and 349 in the country to earn the distinction, which is based on overall academic excellence. According to the U.S. Department of Education, Blue Ribbon schools demonstrate that all students can learn on a high level. Simpson Elementary was named an Exemplary High Performing School, which places it among Georgia’s highest performing schools as measured by state assessments or nationally normed tests, a press release from Gwinnett County Public Schools said.
