Abby Thompson knew it was going to be a good day when Gwinnett County Police Department Officer Antwan Toney first walked up to her early one morning in October 2016. “Back around this time in 2016, I was a senior at Georgia Gwinnett College studying criminal justice, and because I’ve always wanted to be a police officer, I decided to do my internship with the Gwinnett County Police Department,” Thompson said. “They set you up with ride-alongs and (during) one of them, I was assigned to Officer Toney. I remember Officer Toney walked right up to me with a smile and was excited. After I introduced myself, he said, ‘Great, we’re going to have a lot of fun today.’” As they drove around the Snellville area, Thompson said Toney cracked jokes between serious conversations See TONEY, Page 7A

Walking up the stairs to Gwinnett Church’s stage, the men and women of the Gwinnett County Police Department’s 94th Academy — some in full uniform, some in civilian clothes — each held a single, flickering candle close to their hearts, the candles as straight as their single-file line. Projected on either side of the church’s stage, a photo of their fallen comrade, Officer Antwan Toney, beamed down at the officers and the several hundred community members who gathered in the church. “I never saw this man without that same smile on his face — not one time,” said Gwinnett Police Sgt. John Bailey, pointing to Toney’s photo. “The very last time I

the academy, I’m having a blast out here.’” As Bailey choked back tears, the police academy instructor — Toney’s class was the first one Bailey taught — continued. “See, you have to understand, we do this (job) because
