Central ‘keeping something amazing alive’ High school celebrates 60 years of education this week BY FRANK REDDY Staff Correspondent

If you ask Shane Orr, a Central Gwinnett alum and now principal of the high school, what makes his learning institution a success, he’ll tell you: It’s no secret. “It’s already a great school, and it’s been so for a while,” Orr said. “It’s like we’re tasked with keeping something amazing alive, as opposed to developing something new.”

The Lawrenceville area high school celebrates 60 years this week, kicking off the mileShane Orr stone with homecoming Friday. The event precedes an alumni softball game and an anniversary gala later in the week. Orr said being both an alumni and principal of the

school has offered him unique insights. “It’s amazing reflecting on some of my earliest memories of being on this campus … to now being the principal here and trying to insure that today’s students understand not only the importance of embracing the tradition but creating a legacy of their own.” sure that students today have Added Orr: “That has been the opportunities to make a pretty amazing experience memories of their own while for me — blending that past with the present and making See CENTRAL, Page 7A

Former Lilburn-area state legislator BJay Pak has a new title: U.S. attorney for the Northern District of Georgia. The U.S. Senate confirmed President Donald Trump’s nomination of Pak to the post late Thursday. Sen. Johnny Isakson’s office announced the confirmation Friday, and said the chamber confirmed the pick in an executive session. “President Trump’s selection of BJay Pak as U.S. attorney for BJay Pak the Northern District of Georgia was an excellent choice,” Isakson said in a statement. “BJay brings the passion and expertise required for this role, and I have full confidence that he will make Georgians proud as he works to protect their interests and enforce the rule of law.” Pak was a member of the Gwinnett Legislative Delegation in the Georgia General Assembly as a state representative from 2011 to 2016. On top of being a legislator, Pak was also an attorney, a role he continued after he left the House of Representatives. Trump nominated him for the U.S. attorney position in late July. Prior to serving in the General Assembly, Pak had served as an assistant U.S. attorney for the Northern District of Georgia from 2002 to 2008. During that time, he handled cases that involved drug trafficking, money laundering, intellectual property and white-collar crimes. Pak was praised by his predecessor, John Horn, in a statement released by his office Friday afternoon. “I wish the best to my friend, BJay Pak, during what will undoubtedly be an immensely successful term as U.S. attorney,” Horn said. “BJay’s skillful leadership and superb judgment will lead the office to even greater accomplishments, and safeguard the tradition

Former Brookwood standout speaks on storm’s destruction in her new home of Puerto Rico

Amid the chaos of evacuation and bunkering down for Hurricane Maria, Christie Hupman passed a chicken with its brood on the lush grounds of Hospital Auxilio Mutuo, where she works as a neurologist. She was struck with sadness with the thoughts of what would happen next when the mega-storm barreled through San Juan and the rest of Puerto Rico. She figured the birds had little chance against a Category 4 hurricane with sustained wins of more than 150 mph. “It was terrible,” the 2002 Brookwood High graduate said. “I knew they were going to die, but there was nothing I could do about it.” Only they didn’t die. As those in Puerto Rico dug out of the damage from the Sept. 20 hurricane, Hupman returned to the hospital grounds. The oncebeautiful, garden-covered property was skinned of plants and trees. Yet there was the same group of chicks with their mother, a boost of encouragement during difficult
