Issues related to machines used to put electronic ballots on the cards that voters use to cast votes created havoc at multiple precincts Tuesday, leading to three of them to remain open after other polls closed at 7 p.m. Gwinnett County spokesman Joe Sorenson said five precincts in the county experienced issues with the Express Poll machines, which create ballots on the voting cards. Gwinnett County Public Schools Board of Education race made history Tuesday night with the election of the first AfricanAmerican as a school board member. Democratic candidate Everton Blair, 26, will represent District 4 after defeating Republican candidate Chuck Studebaker
by a margin of 56.1 to 43.9 to fill outgoing board member Dr. Robert McClure’s seat. Meanwhile, Republican Steve Knudsen narrowly defeated Wandy Taylor 51.8 to 49.2 for the District 2 seat. Results are not official, however, until they are certified by elections officials. Blair, a graduate of Shiloh High School, ran on a platform to provide more opportunities to
students through resource equity as well as making teachers a priority. “The demands placed on teachers that fall outside of classroom instruction are growing,” Blair said. “We need to better support our educators by giving them the time and space to prepare, develop and execute on what they actually signed up to See BOE, Page 9A
