Police link suspects to other crimes Besides Marco’s Pizza shooting, duo allegedly involved in multiple robberies, murder case BY CURT YEOMANS curt.yeomans@gwinnettdailypost.com

Gwinnett County police said two people arrested for the Oct. 9 shooting and attempted robbery of an employee at a Marco’s Pizza in Lilburn have been linked to several Oshay Dametrius Howard Sims other robberies and one nightclub Cpl. Michele Pihera said murder that occurred in recent Dametrius Marquel Sims, 23, was months.

arrested Oct. 13 and Oshay Quante Howard, 20, was arrested on Oct. 31. At the time of the robbery, police said the employee was walking to the car after closing the restaurant for the night when he was approached by two people who attempted to rob him at gunpoint. The employee was shot in the chest, but police expect him to

survive. They also said it did not appear the suspects took anything. On Monday, Pihera said the detective looking into the case discovered similarities between the Marco’s Pizza shooting and four other robberies. She said police believe Sims was involved in each of the other robberies. They also believe Howard was involved in one of those robberies, but he is

also facing charges in an unrelated murder case, Pihera said. Other crimes Sims was allegedly involved in include an Aug. 14 robbery at a Steak and Shake on Pleasant Hill Road in Duluth, the Sept. 28 robbery of a Chinese food delivery driver on Mistletoe Lane in Snellville, the Oct. 1 robbery at Golden Corral on Stone Mountain

Since Craig Newton did not have any opposition in the Norcross mayoral race, he didn’t have to spend the last two months on the campaign trail. But that didn’t stop him from acting like a candidate. Newton, who has spent much of the last two decades on the Norcross City Council, spent the last two months on a sort of listening tour around the city, knocking on doors and meeting with residents. It wasn’t exactly campaigning as much as it was Newton preparing to take on a new role in

his city. “I’ve been to several houses and I’ve been to several meetings, I’ve talked with several citizens here in Norcross because I want to hear what they expect and I want them to know that I care,” he said. “Something I was told a long time ago by my grandmother was, ‘People don’t care as much about what you know unless they know that you care.’ That’s stuck with me.”

Newton is set to make Gwinnett County history when he is sworn in to office in January as the new mayor of Norcross, because he will be the first African-American to lead one of the county’s 16 cities. The history-making nature of his ascension to the mayor’s office has drawn a lot of interest in the county and the surrounding metro Atlanta area, he said. Georgia Supreme Court

Justice Robert Benham, who was himself the first AfricanAmerican ever appointed to the state’s high court, will swear Newton in as mayor. But Newton said the significance of his election doesn’t matter to him as much as how he performs the job. “I appreciate the historic part of my getting elected,” he said. “It means a lot to a lot of people who worked really hard here in Gwinnett, but my focus was not being first. My focus is being the best. I want to be the best mayor in Gwinnett. I want to have that moniker, and I appreciate the See NEWTON, Page 8A

Loganville voters overwhelmingly backed former Councilman Rey Martinez in the city’s mayoral race Tuesday, creating a history-making situation because he is believed to be the first Hispanic elected mayor of a Gwinnett County municipality.
