For an entire day after she got the news that her younger brother Nelson had been killed in a car crash, Xenia Umanzor said she couldn’t feel anything. There was just a numbness as she processed the news, she said. Nelson Umanzor was one of three Meadowcreek High School students killed in the crash a short distance from the school after its football game against Parkview Friday night. The other students killed in the crash were fellow Meadowcreek athletes, Brandon Martinez and Naseer Alwakeel. “I kind of didn’t believe it, and I didn’t want to,” Xenia Umanzor said. “I kind of felt like it was a nightmare, and

then it feels like as the days go by, it gets worse.” Umanzor was surrounded by hundreds of her brother’s

classmates at Meadowcreek’s football stadium Monday night as they grieved for him, Martinez and Alwakeel. Earlier in

the day, a janzah — which is a Muslim funeral service — was held for Alwakeel. An overflow crowd gathered at an Atlanta mosque to say goodbye to Alwakeel, FOX5 Atlanta reported. The station reported his uncle said his abrupt death should be a wakeup call for all of us. “It is a reminder that we need to be better spouses, better fathers, better wives, better neighbors, better bosses, better employees. Elevate our kindness and good actions,” Belal Alwakeel said. It’s advice Naseer lived during his short 16 years of life. See VIGIL, Page 5A

Two teens have been arrested in connection with the murder and robbery of a 21-year-old man in October. The Duluth Police Department arrested Alexander Powell, 17, and a 16-year-old juvenile for the crime. Powell is charged with armed robbery and assault with intent to commit a crime, and the juvenile is charged with felony murder, armed robbery and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. Police did not provide Alexander Powell the name of the juvenile. Law enforcement officials said Akeem Turner was murdered Oct. 14 during an armed robbery at 4146 Plantation Trace Drive. At the time, police said a witness saw a “super tall white male” get into a car with Turner, and then get his jacket caught in the door as he tried to get out of the vehicle. Powell is 7 feet tall. The witness told police the white man yanked his jacket several times before he freed it from the door and ran off. A black man with a stocky build and dark clothes then ran up to the car and yelled “Give me everything you got,” the witness told police. The witness also reported hearing three gun shots before he called 911. The witness attempted to render first aid to Turner while waiting for first responders to arrive on the scene. Police had said Turner was unconscious and not breathing when officers arrived on the scene. Powell played basketball for Duluth High School during his first two seasons of high school but transferred to a prep school in South Carolina after the 20162017 school year. Gwinnett County jail records show he was booked into the jail Oct. 27. There was no bond amount listed in the jail records, which also show he has not been released.
