DULUTH — As has been the case with every previous class being inducted into the Gwinnett County Sports Hall of Fame, the 2018 induction ceremony was a night for reflection. While there was plenty of emotion throughout the evening, Monday night’s ceremony at the Infinite Energy Forum’s Grand Ballroom meant different things to each of the five inductees. For example, it was a literal wake-up call for Peachtree Ridge grad and former Univer-

sity of Georgia and NFL punter Drew Butler. “When I got the phone call from (fellow Hall of Famer and former South Gwinnett and Georgia quarterback) David Greene, … (my wife) Jacqui and I were still living in Arizona at the time,” Butler recalled. “My phone’s ringing at 5:30 a.m. It kept ringing and kept ringing. Gwinnett County fire investigators are looking for a woman who they say lit a small pile of clothing on fire in front of a third-floor hotel guest room in Norcross last week. Around 1:15 a.m. April 25, firefighters responded to a report of a fire alarm activation at the Congress Hotel and Suites, located on Oakbrook Parkway, in unincorporated Norcross, where they found a burnt pile of clothes that witnesses said had been on fire. Witnesses told investigators that 21-yearold Shanel Velma Best Shanel Velma Best intentionally set the fire after “engaging in a domestic dispute with a female acquaintance inside the room,” a news release said. She had been staying in the room with three other adults and a child when the argument occurred. “Best’s actions were careless and placed multiple people in danger by blocking the guest room door and impeding egress from the third floor,” said Gwinnett County Department of Fire and Emergency Services Capt. Tommy Rutledge, spokesman for the department. “Fortunately, the people inside the room heard her voice outside in the hallway as she yelled and banged on the door in a fit of rage.” The occupants of the room told investigators that they noticed “an orange glow from the crack at the bottom of the door” and opened the door to investigate, which is when they found the fire. Though they were able to stomp it out quickly, the fire charred the clothing and scorched part of the carpet. The fire alarm also sounded due to the smoke buildup in the hallway, Rutledge said. Per their investigation, witness statements and items that were found in the parking lot that belonged to Best, fire officials obtained two felony warrants for her arrest — first degree arson- endangering human life and aggravated assault. Gwinnett flight school instructor remembered after fatal Forsyth crash BY ISABEL HUGHES

Local residents are mourning the loss of a young instructor at The Flight School at Gwinnett County Airport — Briscoe Field who died Saturday after the plane he was piloting crashed in Forsyth County. The pilot, 28-year-old Ernesto Antonio ArteagaMembreno of Grayson, was traveling with two

passengers, Litsu Chen, 30, of Lawrenceville, and Shen Yang Wu, 25, of Duluth, both of whom suffered non life-threatening injuries, officials said. Arteaga-Membreno was pronounced dead at the scene and the two other men were transported to Northeast Georgia Medical Center — Gainesville, according to Forsyth County Fire Department Division Chief Jason Shivers, a spokesman for the department.

The plane, we presume, was attempting to make an emergency landing on 369, but as it came down — it was heading westbound — it clipped a power line. As soon as it hit (Ga.) 369, it hit a car that was also going westbound, and one wing broke off to the east and the aircraft spun off into a bank off (the highway).” — Forsyth County Fire Department Division Chief Jason Shivers

As of Monday afternoon, Chen remained hospitalized, though Wu had been released. “Ernesto was a fine young man and an ex-

cellent instructor,” said Gary Stone, operations manager for The Flight School. “He’s been a real asset since he started in December and he fit right

in and pitched in whenever he could — he became a member of our family. We have only positive things to say about his attitude and personality, and this is truly a tragedy. Of course, our thoughts and prayers go out to his family, friends and loved ones, and he will be missed.” Forsyth County emergency personnel first responded to the accident, which occurred on Browns Bridge Road (Ga. Highway 369) near Waldrip Circle,

around 5:15 p.m. Saturday after receiving multiple 911 calls about a plane that had crashed, Shivers said. “The plane, we presume, was attempting to make an emergency landing on 369, but as it came down — it was heading westbound — it clipped a power line,” he said. “As soon as it hit 369, it hit a car that was also going westbound, and one wing broke off to the east and the aircraft spun
