2 overdose, die in same hour, area FROM STAFF REPORTS Two Lawrenceville men in the same neighborhood died of overdoses less than an hour apart on Friday morning. They lived only 0.3 miles from one another, and similar “drug packaging” was found in each house. The first call came into the Gwinnett Police Department at 6:09 a.m. from a house on Turtle Creek Way. The caller told officials that a young man was unresponsive. Officers and members of the Gwinnett County Department of Fire and Emergency Services “quickly responded to the home,” said Cpl. Michele Pihera. But the young man died. At 6:53 a.m., officials were called to the same neighborhood, this time to a home on Turtle Creek Court for what began as a medical call for another young man. He also died. At the scene of both deaths, officers found white sheets of paper folded up into multiple squares to create an envelope. The paper at the first home was large. At the second home it was smaller and ripped into a rectangle. Investigators believe these were drug packaging, but they still don’t know what kinds of drugs they may have held. “It is still possible that these overdose deaths were unintentional,” Pihera said. “It’s extremely important that we identify the source of this substance so investigators can try to prevent any further deaths.” Anybody with information to share in this case should call GCPD detectives at 770-513-5300. To remain anonymous, tipsters can contact Crime Stoppers at 404-577-8477. Tipsters can also text tips to 274637 or visit www.crimestoppersatlanta.org. Crime Stoppers tipsters can receive up to $2,000 for information leading to an arrest and indictment in this case.

Gwinnett to remember fallen Braselton cop on Memorial Day BY CURT YEOMANS
curt.yeomans @gwinnettdailypost.com
The Gwinnett Fallen Heroes Memorial is a place where the names of fallen troops from the county are honored, but it’s also a place where local fallen police officers, sheriff’s deputies and firefighters are remembered. On Monday, another name will be added to the memorial. County officials will unveil the addition of Braselton Police Sgt. Todd Helcher’s name on one of the black marble pillars that form a halfcircle at the memorial. Helcher died in a car accident in Hall County 12 years ago, and county officials were recently asked, and agreed, to add

on Monday. “Helcher, (who was a resident) of Clarksville, was a 16-month veteran of the Braselton Police Department when he was killed in July 2005 in a car crash as he was driving home from work,” county officials said in an announcement of the upcoming ceremony. The ceremony will begin at 1 p.m. at the memorial, which is located at the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center, 75 Langley Drive in Lawrenceville. In addi-
