Study: Area immigration enforcement soars BY ISABEL HUGHES

Though Gwinnett County Sheriff Butch Conway has long touted his cooperation with immigration officials, a Washington, D.C., think tank found that under the Donald Trump administration, that cooperation has soared. In the first 3 1/2 months of Trump’s presidency, Gwinnett County transferred nearly 250 percent more inmates into U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody than in the same period in 2016,
“
What I didn’t like was the people coming in and out of the jail. I saw it as a waste of taxpayer money to just keep booking the same people over and over when they didn’t have the right to be in the country to begin with. That’s what irritated me, and that’s why we began 287(g).”

a recently released report by the Migration Policy Institute showed. The 116-page document, titled “Revving Up the Deportation Machinery: Enforcement under Trump and the Pushback,” was
co-written by five researchers for MPI, a nonprofit research center that looks at migration trends and refugee policies at local, national and international levels. The report is the culmination of a yearlong study that
Police don’t stop anybody for only driving without license because you can’t know when you (pull somebody over) whether they have a license or not; it’s always for another offense. ... You also can’t know whether they are undocumented or not until you get them to the jail, and what I want to know is, are they doing the same to white people or are (white people) just getting tickets and not being (taken to jail)? Some people would call it profiling — I’m not going to call it profiling — but it sure looks like profiling.” — Charles Kuck, immigration attorney

Officials offer safety tips ahead of Memorial Day BY ISABEL HUGHES

As the Georgia Department of Natural Resources’ Game Warden boat approached Davis O’Brien and his two friends, the young man nervously greeted the rangers. “I’m State Game Warden Ryan and this is my partner, Matt,” DNR ranger Ryan Locke said to the men. “The reason we stopped you is because we need to perform a safety inspection. We need to see enough wearable Coast Guard approved life jackets
for everyone on board, a fire extinguisher and a type-4 throw cushion.” As O’Brien handed Locke the items, the ranger smiled, asking the boys if they had any fish on board. “I wish,” O’Brien said, laughing. “Alright — you’re all set,” Locke said. “Have a nice day.” Thursday morning’s interaction, which lasted just over a minute, is one of many boaters on Lake Lanier and other Georgia lakes should be prepared for going into

The recognition of a fallen Army specialist, a parade through the streets of Dacula and a ceremony in Norcross will highlight the activities taking place around Gwinnett County to mark Memorial Day on Monday. A major event happening Monday is Gwinnett County’s annual Memorial Day Ceremony, which will take place at the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center auditorium at 1 p.m. This year’s ceremony will serve as a reminder of the solemn origins behind Memorial Day because it will include the adding of a new entry to the roll of names listed on the Gwinnett’s Fallen Heroes Memorial: Army Specialist Etienne Jules Murphy. The memorial lists the names of Gwinnett residents who have died in combat in wars and military conflicts dating back to the War of 1812, as well as county employees who died in the line of duty and public safety officers who died while working for either Gwinnett or one of its cities. Murphy, who was from Snellville, was killed a year ago during a vehicle rollover in Syria, where he was serving in the fight against ISIS as part of Operation Inherent Resolve. Navy Capt. Baron V. Reinhold will delivery the keynote address during the ceremony. Reinhold is the commanding officer and professor of Navy Science for
