PRIMARY ELECTIONS 2018

Cagle, Kemp in runoff; Abrams wins FOX 5 ATLANTA

GUBERNATORIAL PRIMARIES

The Democrats know who they will put forward in November’s general election in Georgia’s gubernatorial race, while two Republican candidates are headed to a runoff in July. Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle and Secretary of State Brian Kemp will face a July 24 runoff for the GOP nomination for Georgia governor. Cagle and Kemp beat three GOP rivals in a race characterized by strong support for gun rights and tough talk on

immigration. But no candidate got more than 50 percent of the vote as required to win the nomination outright. Cagle garnered national headlines in February when he threatened to kill a tax break

benefiting Delta Air Lines for ending a discount program for the National Stacey Rifl e AssociaAbrams tion. Kemp made waves with a series of campaign ads including one where he says he has a “big truck” in case he needs to round up “criminal illegals” himself. July’s winner in the GOP race will face Stacey Abrams,

who won the Democratic primary in Georgia’s gubernatorial race. She is the state’s first woman nominee for governor from either major party, and if she wins the general election in November, she’ll become the first black female governor in the U.S. Former state House Minority Leader Abrams beat former state Rep. Stacey Evans in Tuesday’s race. Both are Atlanta-area attorneys. The race was characterized by a battle

over the candidates’ legislative records on education. Abrams is a celebrated romance novelist who made economic mobility and affordable health care cornerstones of her campaign. Abrams has garnered major party endorsements including Hillary Clinton, U.S. Rep. John Lewis and U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders. The candidates are seeking to succeed term-limited Republican Gov. Nathan Deal, who has held the office since 2011.

Shafer headed toward Republican runoff BY CURT YEOMANS

LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR PRIMARIES

Duluth-based state Sen. David Shafer held a commanding lead in the Republican primary for lieutenant governor Tuesday, but it wasn’t quite enough to avoid a runoff. With 85 percent of precincts across the state counted at 11 p.m., Shafer had received 48.74 percent of the vote — just under the 50 percent plus one threshold to win the race outright. The race to face him in the July 24 runoff, however, was neck and neck between former state Rep. Geoff Duncan and former state Sen. Rick Jeffares. Duncan narrowly led Jeffares by a margin of 26.18 percent to 25.1 percent as of 11 p.m. The winner of the Republican race will face Democrat Sarah Riggs Amico, who beat Triana Arnold James 54.86 percent to 45.14 percent. During his election night party at Madcaps in downtown Duluth, Shafer had anticipated the Republican primary race might run a little longer, telling supporters early in the night that it appeared headed toward a runoff. “We’re very encouraged by

Gwinnett BOC authorizes purchase of OFS property BY CURT YEOMANS

curt.yeomans @gwinnettdailypost.com

Anything could go on the 104 acres that Gwinnett County officials are planning to purchase from OFS in unincorporated Norcross. That’s because the county doesn’t have a clear plan yet for what will go on the site, other than they want

to redevelop it. Officials are calling it “the gateway of Gwinnett County,” but there is no clear plan yet for what that could translate to. There are some very vague ideas for what type of development the county may want, and what it doesn’t want, though. “We’re not going to want just any old development on it, you know a gas sta-

tion, a strip mall, that’s not what we’re talking about,” Nash said. “I visualize tall buildings to help deal with the site, I mean leave as much of that site flexible for other kinds of uses (as possible), but I’m just talking Charlotte’s ideas now. “As a board, we haven’t really coalesced (around a redevelopment plan yet).” Gwinnett County commissioners voted 4-1
