Inmate hit, killed Buford driver charged in work detail death FROM STAFF REPORTS A 44-year-old Buford woman faces a vehicular homicide charge after allegedly hitting and killing with her car a 22-year-old inmate who was on work detail Wednesday morning on Lawrenceville Highway, according to Gwinnett County police. Jennifer Adkins was charged with second degree vehicular homicide, distracted driving and following too closely. Police said she hit Hunter O’Conner of Mableton near the intersection of Lawrenceville Highway Jennifer Adkins and Lawrenceville Suwanee Road in Lawrenceville at 9:42 a.m. O’Conner had been following behind a work detail bus on foot so he could control approaching traffic when the accident happened, according to a report. “Investigators determined Adkins was distracted and did not see O’Conner,” Sgt. Jake Smith said. “There were no other occupants of the vehicle and no other injuries.” Smith said an investigation into the accident is still underway, but alcohol, drugs and speed are not believed to be contributing factors at this time. Adkins was arrested and taken to the Gwinnett County Detention Center.
