Struggle to understand homicide over pizza By Joshua sharpe joshua.sharpe@gwinnettdailypost.com
SUGAR HILL — The mother, a thin woman with an airy Southern accent, lounged swallowed in a large strawcolored recliner Thursday afternoon, ignoring the TV. It was an episode of “The Voice” on NBC, but she didn’t care. She was distracted, stunned really, trying to understand what happened to her son. Teresa Varnadore’s Shane Varnadore son, Shane, died late Tuesday night while delivering pizza for Papa John’s at an apartment complex near Lawrenceville. Why? Gwinnett County police believe a man and his teenage roommate gunned the victim down while trying to steal the four pizzas he brought to Wesley Herrington Apartments. Jermaine Young, 21, and Reginald Lofton, 14, who is being charged as an adult, face counts Jermaine Young of felony murder and armed robbery. “Senseless,” Teresa said, looking exhausted in the her cozy living room off Buford Highway, where the smell of the fireplace wafted and pictures of her children, Shane and Tara, decorated a shelf by the TV. In the early hours of Wednesday,

When Alex Weekes first started with the Harlem Globetrotters, he didn’t play with his hair out. Then someone told him folks love the hair. Now, it’s what he’s known for. “With the hair, there always comes some questions,” said Weekes, better known by his nickname, Moose. “‘You’re that guy with the hair.’ I’d rather them say ‘That’s Moose, the guy with the Globetrotters.’” Trouble is, the origin of Moose comes from his long locks. The 6-foot-8 Berkmar High School graduate maintains the hair didn’t jumpstart his career, but an old coach told him fans would never tire of it. Turns out, he was right. Though Weekes insists his basketball talent stands on its

Before posing — or resigning — for a contorted mugshot, a Tucker man allegedly caused a serious moped wreck. The wreck happened Wednesday, shortly before 10 a.m., at Sugarloaf Parkway and Villa Ridge Parkway outside Lawrenceville, said Cpl. Michele Pihera, spokeswoman Robert for the Gwinnett County Burdette Police Department. Robert Burdette, 46, is accused of running a red light with the bike and slamming into a Toyota Corolla, causing serious injuries for himself, as well as a series of charges. The other driver wasn’t hurt. Burdette was taken to Gwinnett Medical Center in Lawrenceville. “A white, crystal-like substance was found in Burdette’s clothing by emergency

400 Tasers, air cartridges, battery packs and warranties, according to Police Chief Butch Ayers. In all, 325 Tasers will be purchased and assigned to sworn police officers, and another 60 will be purchased as replacements. “This purchase will enable the Gwinnett
County Police Department to completely equip all remaining officers with a piece of equipment that has proven to be extremely effective in subduing combative or actively resisting persons,” Ayers told commissioners. “It limits injuries to officers and suspects, which in turn reduces workers com-
pensation claims, medical claims and lawsuits.” The high cost of the purchase raised some eyebrows, and questions about how officers are prepared to use the devices. “Do you have training operations and target practice associated (with the Tasers) similar to the way you do with firearms?”
Commissioner John Heard asked. Ayers said officers are required to undergo a comprehensive training course to be re-certified to use the Tasers once every 12 months. He added that some of the supplies being purchased will used to restock the department for training purposes.
