A Norcross church leader who police say has posed as an immigration lawyer, accountant and child care provider for the last four years is accused of defrauding her customers of at least $1.2 million, though the number is likely much higher, detec-
tives said. Melva Washington, 60, of Duluth was arrested Wednesday afternoon Melva at the Washington Anointed Vision Church, which is located in the 6100 block of Atlantic Boulevard in Nor-
cross, after Gwinnett police, along with U.S. Department of Homeland Security agents, raided the church following a several monthslong investigation into Washington’s operations. She was charged with first-degree forgery, false statements or writings, and unauthorized practice of law for allegedly running an illegal tax preparation business,

law practice and day care out of the church dating back to at least 2014, according to Gwinnett County Police Department Det. Nermin Culrarevic. “Two complainants came forward to us through a (legitimate) immigration attorney and their stories matched perfectly,” See FRAUD, Page 3A

A now-former Buford High School teacher and football coach is facing charges of sexual battery and sexual assault related to alleged incidents involving students at the school. Police Sgt. Jake Smith said Brad Elliott, 37, allegedly touched one female student’s buttocks without permission, prompting the sexual battery charge, and is accused of having a consensual sexual relationship with the other student, who was over 16. “There were two female victims, both students in Elliott’s classes,” Smith said. “Both incidents occurred on Buford High School property Brad Elliott during the current school year.” Elliott turned himself in to police Wednesday night and bonded out on Thursday. His bond on the sexual assault charge was set at $22,200 and the bond on the misdemeanor sexual battery charge was set at $2,400. “He’s probably looking down on it right now, thinking how great it is,” Charlie Underwood said about the unveiling of a restored 1956
tractor at the Duluth-area park that was once the late Archie McDaniel’s home. Underwood’s family used to live on Pleasant Hill Road near the McDaniel Farm. He and his son, Chuck, donated the tractor, an old Allis Chalmers WD45, to Gwinnett
County last fall to be displayed permanently at McDaniel Farm Park. The tractor showed signs of age, particularly lots of rust, but all of that changed recently. The informal unveiling held at the park Thursday afternoon was done to show
