There were sharks all over the Crews Middle School media center on Tuesday afternoon. Well, sort of.

The Lawrenceville-based middle school hosted local business owners, residents and entrepreneurs for its own version of the popular TV show “Shark Tank.”

For the past two months, eighth-grade students in Rod Hames’ business education class were tasked with creating a business, product and pitch to present to potential investors.

“We wanted to get kids out of the textbook and actually performing and doing what the textbook said to do,” Hames said. “We learn a lot when we say or hear things.

But when you do something it’s a different level of learning. That’s what today was about.”

In an effort to combat the county, state and country’s opioid and drug crisis, Eastside Medical Center, in partnership with Navigate Lifeline Gwinnett, recently launched a peer recovery program in the hospital’s main and south campus emergency rooms.

The program, which provides peer recovery coaches for emergency room patients who are in need of substance abuse support, is an attempt by the two organizations “to make a difference in the

Gwinnett commissioners heading to Athens for strategic planning Gwinnett County commissioners are heading to Athens later this week to chart out in which direction they want Gwinnett’s government to head over the next year.

The commission will hold its two-day Strategic Planning Session at the University of Georgia Center for Continuing Education on Thursday and Friday. The annual gathering of commissioners and county department heads is an opportunity to discuss what is going on in the county and what issues they need to be on the look out for.

The first day of last year’s strategic planning session, which was also held at UGA, resulted in commissioners expressing a need for collaboration and teamwork during conversations led by UGA’s Carl Vinson Institute of Government.

Most of all, however, the two-day meeting offers the county’s leaders an opportunity to sit down together and simply plan.

A big part of the session will deal with setting goals for the next 12 months. Each commissioner comes up with a list of issues and goals they would like to see addressed in the upcoming year, and the group gradually whittles that down to a list of top projects, issues and themes they want to tackle in the next year.

That feedback helps influence some of the trends and issues that department heads may tackle in their budget requests that will be unveiled later this year.

The agenda calls for county leaders to meet from 8:30 a.m. to 5:45 p.m. Thursday and 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Friday.

Cause of death doesn’t mar life DEAR DR. ROACH: My 89-year-old husband died two years ago, and it has been a great sorrow and puzzlement to me and his family that his death certificate listed the cause of death as Lewy body disease. Yes, he had some dementia for the last two-and-a-half months of his life, when he was in the hospital and then in a nursing home (where he got C-diff), and hospice, where he died. However, at that time, he had an extremely low body temperature and was taking a lot of medication.

After his death, I asked hospice and our family doctor why such a cause of death was given, and they said that they get their records from the hospital. They said that there’s no way to put “failure to thrive” or other such causes now, and indicated that something precise has to be stated. My family and friends have been mystified. My husband was a calm, loving man of good judgment.

He never raised his voice or lost his temper, even in the last few months of his life. If he had shown any symptoms of Lewy body, I would not question the cause of death. All I want is the truth. — P.C. ANSWER: I am sorry you are still in pain after two years, and hope I can help.

Let me start off with explaining Lewy body dementia. Many people have not heard of it, but it is one of the most common forms of dementia, after Alzheimer’s disease.

In Lewy body disease, dementia — especially with early loss of visual-spatial abilities (trouble driving and getting lost are common and early symptoms) — is necessary for the diagnosis. The dementia routinely gets better and worse, sometimes over seconds, sometimes over days. Symptoms can include drowsiness or naps, staring spells and episodes of disorganized speech.

In addition to the fluctuations in mental ability, sleep disturbances, symptoms that resemble those of Parkinson’s disease and visual hallucinations are now called “core clinical features” of this condition. People with two or more of these core features are likely to have Lewy body disease. There are new, specialized brain, sleep and heart tests that can support the diagnosis. Making the diagnosis early is important, since some medications that sometimes are used for people with Alzheimer’s disease (such as haloperidol, often used for severe agitation) are dangerous in people with Lewy body disease.

I don’t have enough information to say whether Lewy body dementia was likely to be present in your husband. However, I would ask you not to let what is written on his death certificate affect your memory of him.

He rarely acknowledges anyone, drinks and smokes while tinkering in his garage every day and does things like keeping the kids’ soccer balls when they land in his yard until a parent comes to retrieve it with the child.

We ignore his alcohol breath and unpleasant personality and have a civil relationship with him. We have taught our children to be respectful no matter how much they dislike him (unlike some others in the neighborhood).

He has been a good neighbor by informing us when our garage door is open late at night, our outdoor pipes are leaking or gushing water, etc.

I have asked him for advice on what to do regarding an outdoor household problem, and he has voluntarily fixed it for us with supplies from his garage.

— Enabler Dear Enabler: Sidestepping the issue of enabling, I’d like to point out that when you give your neighbor wine, you are providing him with the tools to make him less competent, healthy and (selfishly speaking) less useful to you. If you were really grateful, you could also throw in a carton of smokes, making him happy but decreasing his life span.

There are many ways to thank this good neighbor that don’t involve feeding his addiction — for instance, you could give him a gift card to his favorite hardware store. fundraiser on our estate for a local nonprofit. One of the major sources of income for this event is the multiple cash bars. We offer a variety of beverages, including fine wines.

For the past two years, one couple (who are close friends, neighbors and business associates) have hosted a “pre-party” at their home, which we, of course, cannot attend due to our preparation obligations. They then arrive late with several other couples in tow.

This year they even arrived with their own wine, which they not only drank but shared with several other couples. I did not learn of their “private bar” until my husband and I walked them out. Near their vehicle was a pile of wine bottles dumped on the lawn. The amount of alcohol from the bottles left lying on our lawn amounted to about $300 to $400 in lost drink ticket sales.

I feel insulted and hurt, and I am stunned by their behavior. Aside from business associations, we see each other often. Am I overreacting? How should we handle this situation?

— Wined Out Dear Wined Out: First, let me thank you for outlining the very essence of the phrase “first-world problem” in this space.

And yet, even though your dilemma occurs on an estate and involves fine wine,

when you boil it down, this issue simply amounts to people behaving badly and the question of how to respond. And you should respond.

You say, “Daisy and Tom, we found a pile of wine bottles on the lawn near your car, and I think they came from you and your guests. What’s up with that?”

If you’re stunned and disappointed, you should say so. I’m not suggesting that you bill these people for the estimated amount of spilled or drunk wine that might have gone to charity, but the advantage of speaking your own truth, plainly and clearly, is that you give someone who owes you an explanation or apology the opportunity to offer one.

And then after you have had your say, you move on. Don’t dwell, punish or gossip. Consider the matter settled.

McDaniel, who has been in the jail for about a year, is one of 75 inmates who participates in Operation Second Chance, more colloquially known as the Jail Dogs program, which celebrated its eighth anniversary Tuesday.

Since its inception in 2010, the program — a partnership between the Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office and Society of Humane Friends of Georgia that saves dogs from the county’s animal shelter by using inmates to train the dogs until they are adoptable — has successfully adopted out 416 dogs.

Started initially with five dogs pulled from the euthanasia line at the shelter, the program houses 31 dogs, each of which has a primary inmate handler plus one or two secondary handlers.

The dogs sleep in their primary handler’s rooms, though the secondary and tertiary handlers allow for more inmates to have access to dogs while also providing continuity for the dog, should one of its handlers leave the unit.

Trainers, who are community volunteers, visit with the dogs and inmates three times a week, where they teach the inmates how to train and care for the dogs while also forming bonds with the men and the animals.

Head trainer Charles Baranowski, who has been with the program since its beginning, said the program was “a calling” for him.

he said. “When we first started this, the Sheriff called over to our kennel club and said, ‘Do you have any trainers?’

We had a few come over and they were around for a while, and then we had some others, but I said, ‘Hey, I’m retired, I love doing this,’ and now we’re going into the ninth year.

“Like the sheriff says, it’s a two-part program: It’s for the dogs, but also hopefully we can help rehabilitate some of these inmates. I always say to (the inmates), ‘These dogs will hopefully teach you something you don’t know about yourself.’”

For McDaniel, that’s exactly what the program has done.

“When I came in here, I said, ‘I’m going to use this to my advantage,’” he said. “I’ve got a dog, I get to eat every day, I have a bed to sleep in and I’m not drinking and I’m not doing drugs. I’ve used this more as a rehab for myself than I have with (official rehab facilities).

I’ve never been clean this long — granted, I’ve been in jail this whole time — but I said when I put in for the dog program, ‘This is it. This has to be it, because I’m at the end of the rope and this is my life.’”

It’s not just McDaniel who has benefited from the Jail Dogs program, though; in December, inmate Shane Hawkins

published a book about his experience in the program and as a handler.

Though he was sentenced last month to 15 years in prison for his charge of driving under the influence — serious injury by vehicle, he previously told the Daily Post that the program, and his dog, Roxy, “taught (him) more than (he) probably taught her.”

“She (taught me) what it took to have patience and the discipline and trust,” he said, “and I realized I could give back with the (program).”

Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office Col. Dan Pinkard, who helps oversee the Jail Dogs program, said while he doesn’t have specific numbers, the program has been proven to lower the rates of inmate recidivism.

“We’re very proud of our inmates in the program and have very few problems with them,” Pinkard said. “While I don’t have the physical data, if you track the inmates, you will find that recidivism is lower because the inmates leave the program with a sense of giving back to the community, a sense of accomplishment and unconditional love for the dogs — and some inmates have never had that. It does change lives, and we’ve got those stories from inmates who have been through the program to (prove) it.”

A Lawrenceville nonprofit that offers help to families and communities struggling to care for their pets hit a key fundraising goal in its bid to keep its doors open Tuesday, but it is not out of the woods yet.

Daffy’s Pet Soup Kitchen has been struggling financially this year, according to its founder, Tom Wargo. Unexpected vehicle repairs, moving expenses for some items that had been kept in storage, and a prolonged effort to get a store that would have raised money for the nonprofit to stay open have all hit the nonprofit.

Wargo was also recently in an accident from which he is still recovering, making him unable to focus on fundraising efforts.

The 21-year-old nonprofit got behind on its rent because of its financial struggles and faced eviction if $10,000 wasn’t raised by Wednesday morning to pay for its space at the Lawrenceville Square shopping center.

The 8-day-old campaign reached that goal Tuesday, raising about $5,000 in 24 hours alone on a GoFundMe page.

“We’re not the rescues, we don’t get the ‘thank yous’ all the time,” Wargo said. “Most of the people that we help out, it doesn’t seem like they (fully) know what we do, so when we raise $10,000 in a week, it makes me feel really good that people appreciate what we’re doing.”

While reaching the $10,000 goal was important, some new twists popped up Tuesday that brought good and bad news for the nonprofit.

One bit of good news was that a court hearing on whether Daffy’s should be evicted was postponed a

On the other hand, its landlord sprung two bits of not so good news on the group: With April about to begin, an additional $3,500 for next month’s rent is being thrown on the pile. In addition to that, the group has to move out of a storage space that it been using for free under an agreement with the previous landlord this week.

In all, Wargo estimated that when the amount of money that GoFundMe takes out of money raised on the site is factored in, Daffy’s has to raise about $15,000 to be fully caught up on its rent.

The GoFundMe page was set up at www.gofundme.com/evicting-daffy039-pet-soup-kitchen to raise the money. By Monday afternoon, after seven days of donations, $5,735 had been raised. By 5 p.m.

Tuesday, the amount was up to $10,746.

“We do have another week to a week-and-a-half to come up with the other $4,000 to $5,000, and I’m pretty confident that we can do that,” Wargo said.

“But the moving is a big thing.”

In addition to money, though, the group needs two things: about 5,000 square feet of space to store pet supplies and volunteers to help move it.

Daffy’s runs a food bank that helps animal rescue groups by offering pet food at affordable rates, and it steps in to provide pet supplies to agencies in communities that have been hit by natural disasters, such as floods or hurricanes. It also operates a small store that sells items to try to raise some of the funding it needs.

“Anytime we get money, we put it into the charity,” Wargo said. “We’ve been low (on funds) many times, (and) we’ve had to reach out for money for this or that, but it’s normally because we’re growing certain programs. This is the first time that it’s been legal, like, ‘Here is your eviction paperwork, you’ve got one day.’”

Daffy’s had been working to open a new store at a different shopping center for the past 15 months, spending a lot of its money to get that ready while waiting for the OK from local government

officials to open. The idea behind the new store is that it would make it possible for the nonprofit to sell more products to raise more money to fund its programs.

On top of that, a truck Daffy’s used to transport pet food and supplies to areas stricken by natural disasters broke down during a trip to Louisiana last year. Other vehicles have needed maintenance as well.

In February, it spent money that would have otherwise gone to rent to move supplies out of one of five spaces it had been using at the Lawrenceville Square shopping center so another tenant could expand its business.

Then Wargo was in a multi-vehicle wreck and spent several days in the hospital. He said he still feels some of the effects of a post-concussion syndrome.

As a result, the injuries are preventing him from being able to move the supplies that have to be relocated himself.

“In the last year, it’s just been pretty bad,” Wargo said.

Snellville officials have a suggestion for residents who have prescription drugs that they no longer need or want: give them to the police.

The Snellville Police Department received a grant from CVS Health’s Medication Disposal for Safer Communities Program to set up a drug collection unit at the department’s headquarters. The idea behind the unit is to give residents

residents to drop off unneeded medications, city officials plan to continue undertaking other efforts to collect medications.

While the drug collection unit will be open 24 hours a day, Snellville police are encouraging residents to mainly use it between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.

“The Snellville Police Department will still participate in the National Drug Takeback initiative twice a year,” Snellville Police Chief Roy Whitehead said in a statement.

“This new program allows us to provide service 365 days a year, enhancing our willingness to partner with our community to properly dispose of these substances.”

Police: Mother drives into pole to prove God would protect family

A mother of two who recently drove her SUV into a pole did so intentionally to prove to her children that God is real “and he would protect them,” Norcross police said.

Bahari Warren, 25, of Stone Mountain was charged with two counts of first-degree cruelty to children after she struck a metal and concrete pole at the intersection of Peachtree Industrial Bou-

levard and Holcomb Bridge Road in Norcross last Wednesday, acBahari cording to Warren Norcross police Sgt. Eric Butynski, spokesman for the department.

“We responded to a single-vehicle crash just after midnight on March 21,” Butynski said. “A Gwinnett Police Department officer was already on scene, but we deter-

mined it was (Norcross’) limits, so we took over.

We spoke to the driver first, the mother, who said, ‘You’ll find out tomorrow on Facebook what happened.’ We then talked to the kids and asked what happened, and the kids pretty much said that mom wanted to prove God was real and he would protect them.’”

Butynski said the mother told her children, who are 5 and 7 years old, to buckle up before she “crossed over the median from the northbound to the southbound lane and

drove straight toward a metal and concrete pole.”

“We then talked to the mom, who said pretty much the same thing — that she wanted her kids to know that God would protect them,” Butynski said. “The kids also told us that as she accelerated toward the pole, the mom had her eyes closed.”

Duncan running for lieutenant governor to put ‘policy over politics’

Former state Rep. Geoff Duncan has held many titles in his life.

He’s professional baseball player, businessman and a member of the Georgia House of Representatives.

The Cumming resident now hopes to not only add a new title — lieutenant governor — to that list, but to also use his past experiences to help lead Georgia into the future. He told the Daily Post on Tuesday that his past experiences give him insight that has guided him as a public servant.

“I think it gives me a better perspective than most inside the system,” Duncan said. “When I look at a lot of these issues that pop up, I don’t know which government program is supposed to deal with it. I don’t know which line item in the budget has been dealing with it for decades.

“I just look at it through the lens of kids in the public schools, regulations that have slowed down small businesses — in my own life, my faith being a part of trying to solve a lot of the problems and the challenges.”

Duncan is one of three Republicans running for the No. 2 position in state government, and will face state Sen. David Schafer, R-Duluth, and Henry County-based former Sen. Rick Jeffares in the May 22 primary. The winner of that race will face the winner of the Democratic primary contest between Triana Arnold-James and Sarah Riggs Amico in the

fall.

For Duncan, the message isn’t about who he’s running against, but about the climate he wants to bring to the lieutenant governor’s office. He said there are four “C”s that he feels are important: churches, charities, corporations and citizens.

He also said politicians should focus on policy matters instead of backdoor political minutia.

“When I looked up and I saw the opportunity, saw that the position would be open, I felt encouraged by a number of folks and myself that I could do it better, he said. “I felt like I could do it bolder and I could create the culture in the Senate that rewards policy over politics.”

Library users who live in Peachtree Corners will have to go a few days without their local library branch next month because of the air conditioning system.

The Gwinnett County Public Library system announced its Peachtree Corners branch will close April 23 so its HVAC system can be replaced.

The branch won’t be out of commission for long, though. The library system said it plans to stay closed until April 27.

Minister, family arrested after allegedly attacking officers

A minister and his family members who were caught on body camera video attacking Lilburn police officers Sunday are facing felony charges stemming from the incident.

Wilmer R. Cruz, 38, Cristina Cruz, 37, their 17-year-old son who is also named Wilmer Cruz and their 16-year-old son were charged with obstruction of law enforcement, aggravated assault against law enforcement, obstruction of a 911 call and other charges after they were “repeatedly instructed to stand back” from speaking with a missing juvenile who police had located in a tan Cadillac Escalade near Inglesia Cristiana Evangelica Church on Lawrenceville Highway in Lilburn.

As the officers walked up to the car, the Cruz teen began “sizing (them) up” while blocking the

officers from getting to the car, the report said.

A crowd of people, including the husband and wife, began surrounding the officers and grabbed at them, the report said.

At one point, Wilmer Cruz Sr. and the 17-yearold Cruz pushed one of the officers against the church’s glass, choking him until the officer could regain control, the report said. At another point, Cristina Cruz grabbed the officer’s taser and pointed it at him until he drew his gun.

The group was also kicking and grabbing the officers, who eventually called for backup and were able to regain control of the situation, though not before at least one officer used all his taser cartridges, to no avail.

The Cruz family is being held without bond at the Gwinnett County Jail.

It was not immediately known from reports what relationship they had with the runaway teen.

According to Russian state media TASS, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the government “deeply regretted” the U.S. decision to expel to their diplomats, and would analyze the situation before submitting a proposal for retaliatory action to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Facebook sources tell CNNMoney the 33-year-old CEO has come to terms with the fact that he will have to testify before Congress within a matter of weeks, and Facebook is planning the strategy for his testimony.

The pressure from lawmakers, the media and the public has become too intense to justify anything less.

The Facebook sources believe Zuckerberg’s willingness to testify will also put pressure on Google CEO Sundar Pichai and Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey to do the same. Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley has officially invited all three CEOs to a hearing on data privacy April 10.

That means Washington, not London, will be the stage for the trial of big tech.

Zuckerberg today turned down a request from British lawmakers to answer questions on the social network’s privacy practices and will send two deputies instead.

Budget contributes to national insecurity President Trump wants us to believe that the ridiculous 2,232-page spending bill passed by Congress, but unread by most members, is a matter of “national security,” because it has money to rebuild the military. No one justifies any of this misspending on constitutional grounds because there is no justification for it. People are getting pay raises for adding to the debt.

That’s not promoting national security.

Crushing debt — whether in government or in one’s personal life — creates insecurity. History shows that enormous debt has been a contributing factor to the collapse of nations and empires.

Why is there more money in the bill for the Department of Education when Secretary Betsy DeVos wants to cut her spending budget by 5 percent and focus on a $1 billion school choice program instead? How does this department “educate” students and why does it even exist?

In its analysis of the bill, the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank based in Washington, D.C., got it right: “In addition to the defense increase, the omnibus provides an additional $63 billion in funding above the Budget Control Act caps for domestic spending. This increase is unwarranted. There are numerous wasteful, inefficient and misguided nondefense programs that could be cut or eliminated entirely. Furthermore, agencies will likely rush to spend all this additional money over the next six months, leading to even more waste. Instead of going through the regular order budget process, Congress continues to fund the government by self-created crisis, failing to perform its oversight function and allowing wasteful and inappropriate spending to continue year after year.”

This is not what voters expected from the 2016 election. There is always an excuse for additional spending. And it is almost always based on lies and the failure of too many members to put American citizens first and their own careers second. President Trump asked the Senate to eliminate the filibuster, which would presumably remove the Republican justification for going along with threats by Democrats to “shut down” the government. That is as likely to happen as ending wasteful and unnecessary spending.

In the musical “Oklahoma,” the character Ado Annie sings “I’m just a girl who can’t say ‘no.’” That should be the theme of Congress. So addicted have people become to government with nearly half the nation receiving a check of some sort and the other half paying for it, it has become a fiscal version of the opioid crisis.

The stock market reacted to this and other bad monetary news by shedding 1,400 points off the Dow Jones Industrial Average last week. President Trump has been bragging about recent record highs in the market. It appears his bragging days are over for now. There is little in this bill to brag about other than shoringup the military. All of the other misspending would be shameful, if Washington politicians knew how to feel shame.

Trump’s indiscretions his own business So now it’s collusion with Stormy Daniels?

The obsession by some in the media with the affair that Donald Trump allegedly had with a porn star 12 years ago shows how desperate his haters are to drive him from office.

For the anti-Trump forces in the media, Stormy has become the Joan of Arc that will bring down the president who was elected in large part because everyone hated Hillary.

But don’t bet on it.

I have no idea — and don’t really want to know — what Stormy did to become “an award-winning American pornographic actress, stripper, political figure, screenwriter and director,” as Wikipedia describes her. Stormy is now 39 and not the porn star she used to be. Maybe she’s launching a whole new career — going on “60 Minutes” and tattling on the famous people she had sex with.

I have no idea if she and Mr. Trump had a tempestuous affair, a one-night fling, or if they innocently shared a round of golf and split a case of Diet Coke.

I also don’t care. It was 2006.

Whatever it was, the StormyTrump deal was a private and consensual relationship. The liberal media shouldn’t care

Michael Reagan about Stormy’s relationship with Trump, either, but they are drooling over her sex story and trying to weaponize her.

Is her story real news or fake? If it’s true, so what? It was 2006. Does it disqualify Trump from being a good president or just prove he’s a lousy husband?

For Republicans, does it wash away the successes he’s had in office — tax reform, lower unemployment, deregulation, potential peace deals with North Korea?

I get tweets from people all the time who ask, “How can you support someone disgusting like Trump who was having all that sex and being unfaithful to his wife?” People tell me I’m disgracing my father’s name with my support for Donald Trump.

“Wait a minute,” I say. “I don’t approve of what Trump

may or may not have done with Stormy or anyone else when he was married. But I also don’t think it’s anyone’s business.”

On that score, I agree with my father. In 1960, he knew the Republican National Committee and Richard Nixon were in possession of photos that showed the very married John Kennedy entering and leaving various hotels with young women who were not named Jackie.

When Nancy, my sister Maureen and I asked my father at dinner if the Republicans were going to use the photos to help Nixon win, he said, “No — and they shouldn’t. It’s a private affair between a man and his wife. It’s not a public affair, and it should not be made public.”

My father knew that JFK’s busy career as a philandering senator had nothing to do with whether he’d make a good or bad president. Likewise, what Donald Trump did with Stormy Daniels in 2006 says nothing about his presidency. It says more about how our society has changed since the 1960s.

Back then, when it came to sex, Jack and Bobby Kennedy were as professional as Stormy Daniels — and almost everyone in Washington, Manhattan and

Hollywood and the media knew it. But back then people were allowed to have a less-than-perfect private life — even if they were from the other party.

Today it’s totally different.

Because of social media, there’s no such thing as privacy anymore. Mainstream journalism has adopted the standards of the National Inquirer, and when it comes to politicians, movie stars and athletes, the public has come to expect to hear the latest private dirt on them all the time.

People didn’t stop liking Frank Sinatra’s music when they heard about the things he did in his private life. Nobody cared about what NBA superstars Kobe Bryant or Magic Johnson did in private as long as they performed on the court.

So when it comes to President Trump, maybe we should count the scoring he’s been doing in Washington — not the kind he did in private before he was elected president.

Narcissism and the Republic: ‘Me the people?’

Boy, is narcissism getting out of hand with younger generations.

San Diego State psychologist Jean Twenge examines the trend in two books: “Generation Me” and “The Narcissism Epidemic: Living in the Age of Entitlement.”

Twenge says the self-esteem movement — in which everybody gets a trophy — has produced many “me-centered” young adults, whose opinions of their own skills and talents are often out of sync with reality.

Why is this an issue? Because, says Psychology Today, “True narcissists can only see things from their own perspective.” They are incapable of the civility and thoughtful deliberation a representative republic requires to address the many challenges ours is facing.

Lucky for me, I grew up in the ’70s, when it was impossible to become self-centered.

Unlike many modern parents, who often give their children unique names to demonstrate how “special” they are, I was given the biblical name Thomas, after my father. I never took myself too seriously, because thousands of other kids had names — Bill, Bob, Tim,

Tom Purcell Joe — just as common.

Families were bigger in the ’70s. Growing up as the only boy with five sisters was awfully humbling.

When I was 12, Bobby Grebber, the neighborhood bully, began roughing me up. Well, I didn’t have older brothers to teach me how to fight; my sisters taught me. I looked Grebber dead in the eyes and said, “You are sooooo immature! Get a life!”

Even though I had five sisters, my father, always pinching pennies, made me wear hand-me-downs. It wasn’t too bad most of the year, but Easter Sunday was unpleasant. Do you know how hard it is to outrun a bully with your pantyhose bunching up and your bonnet flopping in the wind?

We never experienced a self-esteem movement at St.

Germaine Catholic School. The nuns didn’t worry about making us feel good about ourselves.

They focused on pounding values into us and making sure we mastered math, science, reading and writing. Any narcissistic tendencies were wacked out of us with a hard, wooden ruler.

I attended a public high school where I was finally able to attempt a little narcissism — until my parents saw a slip in my grades. That resulted in a temporary loss of every privilege. No B grade or better meant no car, friends or the freedom to leave the house.

I made it to Penn State University, where I gave narcissism a full go. It was there that I was introduced to my first love: Rolling Rock beer. By the time I was a junior, I had attained, to quote comedian Frank Nicotero, a “3.2” (blood-alcohol level).

But my parents intervened and humbled me yet again.

No B grade or better meant no more cash.

What’s worse, my father, worried that my liberal arts major would fail to land me a job, persuaded me to sign up for more practical courses. I’m the only person ever to graduate from Penn State with a major

in English and a minor in air conditioning and heating.

In any event, unlike older generations which had little choice but to be humbled out of their narcissistic impulses, newer generations are getting too self-centered.

Twenge tells NPR that millennials score higher on the Narcissistic Personality Inventory than prior generations. She says narcissism is evident in pop songs, which focus on the self, as well as in books that frequently use phrases such as “I am special” and “all about me.”

And obsessive use of social media, home of the “selfie,” certainly nurtures a narcissist’s worst tendencies.

Perhaps parents should re-embrace some of the harsh child-rearing techniques of prior generations, so that we may reverse today’s Narcissistic Personality Inventory scores.

Because today’s growing narcissism is hurting an entire generation of our children, which is not good for our country.

By Christine Troyke Georgia Gwinnett College softball coach Kat Ihlenburg was scouting another player when Archer catcher Sydney Willhite caught her eye.

The Tigers were playing Central Gwinnett and Ihlenburg knew the game was a good chance to see some local talent.

But neither was on the other’s radar in the fall of 2015.

“I have lived 20 minutes away from here and had no idea there was a softball program,” Willhite said.

Ihlenburg got to see Willhite throw a runner out. Then she swatted a couple of big hits.

And she was smiling the whole time. Trademark Willhite.

Ihlenburg talked with some of the fans in the stands and was surprised to hear Willhite, a senior with obvious talent, hadn’t yet committed to a college.

Willhite had offers, but they

were all out of state.

Ihlenburg got her number after the game against Central and Willhite came to see the campus facilities.

“It was kind of last minute,” Willhite said. “But as soon as I came here, I just knew it.

coaches didn’t — they were just like, ‘here’s our game plan.’ She took me in like a kid of her own and that was a great feeling to have. And it’s close to home. I love being around my family so that was a huge part of it.”

Willhite made a fast transition to the college game, at the

plate and behind it, last year.

“Archer prepared me very well, not only as an athlete, but as a person,” said Willhite, who was a freshman on Archer’s state championship team. “But it was a little bit different with coaching styles — and they pitch differently. The speed is faster and the movement is a lot different.

“We have a better knowledge, from our pitching coach, of where we should pitch and what the hitters are going to do. We’re a lot more prepared with scouting reports. We know exactly what we’re facing.”

Willhite played 55 games as a freshman, starting in 50 of those, with a .342 batting average and a .990 fielding percentage. She hit eight home runs — second only to a record-setting 10 from Brashante Dareus — and 14 doubles with 42 RBIs. “She was a really awesome surprise (last year),” Ihlenburg

said. “We thought she would come in and split time with the other catchers, but she was so consistent and so determined when she hit that I couldn’t take her out.”

Willhite wants to be the one with a bat in her hands in clutch moments and she’s even-keeled on the occasions when it doesn’t go her way.

“As a catcher, to regain focus after you have at-bat that upsets you is huge,” Ihlenburg said.

“She’s just genuinely happy all the time, she always works hard and she’s truly passionate about the program.

“She’s one of the best teammates and you can’t give that label out lightly.”

A shoulder injury has limited Willhite to a degree during her sophomore season. She isn’t ready to be the everyday catcher again yet, but Willhite See WILLHITE, Page 12A

HOSCHTON — While Parkview’s Justin Long and Grayson’s Christopher Mitchell had record-setting meets, Archer’s boys team scrapped its way to a second consecutive title Monday at the Gwinnett County Track and Field Championships at Mill Creek.

The Tigers followed up their breakthrough 2017 performance with a gutsy effort led by seniors Sterling Warner and James Cragin. They racked up 112 points to hold off Parkview (89). Peachtree Ridge (59), Shiloh (53) and Grayson (49) also finished in the top five.

“Winning last year was so important for us, it was a big step trying to build a program as young as Archer is,” Archer coach Ethan Kasson said. “Being able to come back and do it again means a lot for our community, for our program that we’re growing. It gets us to where we want to be on the map with

the state of Georgia. There are still a lot of things out there we’re looking for.

We’ve got a good squad heading into state, that’s the ultimate prize for us.

But winning this thing, it’s a big deal. We put a lot of stock in this because this is the best county in Georgia and it has the best coaches in Georgia. It’s special to win this, especially for this group of seniors.”

An injury to sprinter Daniel Robinson didn’t

help the Tigers’ title hopes, but his teammates, led by Warner, stepped up.

Warner was county champion in the 100-meter run in 11.06 seconds, was second in the 200 in 22.59 and played a pivotal role on two second-place relays.

“I thought Sterling Warner stole the show, him and James Cragin,” Kasson said. “We know what we get from James every week. The kid’s resume speaks for itself. He’s

going to Georgia Tech.

Sterling’s one of those kids who’s been in the program for four years, trusts the process of things we do and he runs with a purpose.

We had some injuries and setbacks with Daniel and we needed somebody to step up when Sterling did.

“He did in both our relays, was county champ in the 100 and getting second in 200 out of Lane 1, that saved our bacon for real.

We needed Sterling to step up when he did. I couldn’t be more proud of him.”

Warner’s only runner-up finish was to Long, one of the meet’s stars. The Parkview senior won the 200 in 21.54 and was first in the 400 at 48.07, following up county meet records in both those races (21.40 in the 200 and 47.47) during last Saturday’s preliminaries. Teammate Keith Williams gave the Panthers a 1-2 finish in the 400 with a time of 49.55.

“We were all, at one time shocked and at one time like, ‘Wow, they noticed how much we were doing,’” Willhite said. “It was an incredible feeling and an honor to be part of something like that. But we still have a lot of hard work to do.”

Still, the ranking has had an effect on the atmosphere.

“It just feels like we have something going on inside of us,” Willhite said. “At practice the other day, it was just a normal practice and all of a sudden we just started cheering screaming and everyone just got the chills. We’re like, ‘What is happening?’ But it was just a good feeling.

“I know we have a target on our backs because of the No. 1, so we’re going to play every team as hard as we can. It just gives us an opportunity to get better. It’s exciting.”

Lanier’s Walker commits to Oglethorpe

Lanier senior Alex Walker has made a commitment to the Oglethorpe University men’s basketball program.

Walker, a 6-foot-3 guard, played his first three high school seasons at Peachtree Ridge before transferring to Lanier. As a senior, he averaged 15.1 points and helped the Longhorns to the state playoffs.

Bassette honored as Longhorns’ all-time scorer

Bailey Bassette, a Lanier senior, was honored recently as the girls basketball program’s alltime leading scorer and as a 1,000-point scorer.

Bassette, who scored 1,037 career points, averaged 8.8 points and 4.3 rebounds as a senior for the Longhorns’ state playoff team. She averaged 11.6 points as a junior.

Bears’ Canale to play baseball at Gordon State Mountain View senior Dominic Canale has announced his commitment to the Gordon State College baseball program.

The left-handed pitcher, who is 4-0 this season, had a 2.42 ERA with 25 strikeouts in 26 innings as a junior.

Bears’ Lee picks Augusta Mountain View senior Matthew Lee has made a commitment to the Augusta University baseball program.

Lee, a catcher, had 11 RBIs as a junior for the Bears.

Grayson’s Meadows, Wise honored with ceremony

Grayson seniors Parker Meadows and Bryant Wise were honored Tuesday with a college signing celebration at the high school.

Meadows, a center fielder, signed with Clemson. Wise, a pitcher, signed with Emory.

Meadows hit .393 with four home runs, 19 RBIs and 12 stolen bases as a junior, and also was 4-2 with a 1.87 ERA and 33 strikeouts in 30 innings pitched. Wise was 1-1 with a save as a junior pitcher.

Defenseman Todd joins Gladiators out of Mercyhurst

The Atlanta Gladiators signed rookie defenseman Zach Todd on Tuesday.

Todd, 25, finished his collegiate career this season for Mercyhurst University, where he had 26 points in 37 games.

The Holden, Mass., native’s 23 assists tied for the overall team lead.

In 104 career games for the Lakers, the 5-foot10, 181-pound defender notched 53 points.

The Gladiators play Kalamazoo at 7:05 p.m. today at Infinite Energy Arena in Duluth. Atlanta has four games left in the regular season and sits in the South Division’s final playoff spot with a 10-point margin over fifth-place Jacksonville. The Gladiators trail third-place Orlando by four points. Kalamazoo is locked in a threeteam battle for the final spot in its division.

Over the last decade, the Gwinnett County All-Star Basketball Games have always provided one last opportunity for some of the county’s top high school talent to showcase their skills and represent their schools.

But as the doubleheader enters its 10th edition Thursday night at Grayson High School — the girls game tips off at 6 p.m., followed by the boys game at approximately 7:30 p.m. — one of the games will have a distinctly different look.

While the girls game will feature teams divided up by certain schools and areas, the boys game will have the distinction of having teammates from specific schools matched up against one another.

Pierce expects the new format to add a little extra spice to what is already an entertaining evening. “(The players) thought it was funny,” Pierce said. “They were excited, though. It’s made practice (this week) real competitive — a little more competitive than I can remember.

“It’s going to be interesting. You know, teammates don’t want to lose to each other (especially) the last time (playing) in high school.”

Parkview staves off Central in 2-1 win

LILBURN — The Parkview boys soccer team scored its goals against Central Gwinnett early in each half during Tuesday night’s home game.

The first goal, from Gerson Montano, came in the second minute of the match, and Alec Leake added another in the second minute of the second half.

Despite playing from behind the entire game, the second-ranked Black Knights pressured the No. 4 Panthers throughout, forcing the outcome to hang in the balance in the waning minutes of the match.

Central scored to bring the score to 2-1 with just more than seven minutes left.

The Knights continued to press their attack, coming close to finishing an equalizer with three minutes left, but Central’s closerange shot on goal was blocked by a couple of Parkview bodies.

Parkview never had a moment to catch its breath.

With 21 seconds remaining in the match, Central goalkeeper Christopher Sanchez skied a free kick from midfield, and a Knight redirected the pass on goal toward Parkview goalkeeper Max Carlson.

The senior keeper was in good position, planted his feet and snared the shot, which was headed inside the post to his right.

When time expired, Parkview (10-4-1, 3-1) passed Central (9-2, 3-2) in the Region 7-AAAAAAA

“We don’t score many goals in the run of play,” Klinect said.

“We’re stingy on defense, so getting the goal up early helps us because we’re a sound defensive team.”

Thursday’s game against Norcross and an April 13 match against Brookwood are the final two games in what has been a crucible of a region schedule this season.

As of Monday, Region 7 had four of its seven teams ranked among the Top 10 boys programs in Class AAAAAAA. Parkview started region play with a 1-0 loss to Meadowcreek and has clawed its way back into playoff contention by knocking off one region rival after another.

The Archer girls lacrosse team does bi-weekly physical evaluations to keep the players accountable, but head coach Leslie Stuart has to keep the results a secret from sisters Jessica and Emily Flynt.

“They’re so competitive with one another,” Stuart said, “but they’ve never had a fight or even a disagreement on the field.”

Two years apart, they’re best friends.

The lifetime connection binds them in ways few teammates ever achieve.

During a summer 7-on-7 travel tournament, the Flynts combined to score six straight goals.

Emily: “Just because of the …”

Jessica: “… transition …”

Emily: “… pass, pass shot. It was pretty awesome. People on the sideline were like …”

Jessica: “… they must be related. And in high school, every game, there’s at least one goal where the parents are like, ‘Oh, there go the Flynt sisters.’ But it’s always nice to know I have someone I can look up the field and she’s, boom, right there.”

“We don’t even think about it,” said Emily, a

sophomore. “We just look up and — it’s the first person I see when I have the ball.”

Not surprisingly, Emily is the Tigers’ (6-3) top goal

scorer and Jessica leads them in assists.

They have one play they run consistently, capped in a backdoor cut, that results in at least one goal a game.

It’s so hard to stop, that Stuart isn’t even worried about other teams scouting it.

“They have so much trust in each other,” Stuart said. “Jess and Emily, they’ve clearly carried the team all season, but it was the Lakeside game (on March 17) where they really synced together. That’s what everyone was talking about after the game.

When they work together, it’s awesome to see.”

Archer won the area title last season and is 4-0 so far this year. The Tigers’ game tonight against rival Grayson will decide the area title.

“Last year’s team, it was all the seniors who started the Archer youth program,” Jessica said. “We had all been playing together for a long time, so it’s a little bit different with this team.

But it’s actually working out really well. Our team chemistry is already awesome. We do a lot of team bonding on and off the field. That helps a lot.”

Jessica, a member of Archer’s Tigers of Distinction and leader at the school, picked up lacrosse in seventh grade.

“Honestly, my mom was just like, ‘Let’s try something new this year,’” she said. “I was into soccer and gymnastics, but it wasn’t really for me. We just signed up, came to a practice and I fell in love with the sport.”

Emily, who was involved in swimming and basketball, went along happily.

“I found them pretty interesting and I liked watching her play,” she said.

The next year, both girls were on the field.

The running was an appeal, but more than that, the teamwork.

“Always on the field, we play well together,” Emily said. “We aren’t ever mad at each other on the field because we know how the other one plays.”

Emily made a splash as a freshman.

“Since Jess played with all those girls since middle

school, I already knew all of them and was friends with a lot of them,” Emily said. “They all knew how I played, but I didn’t expect to start games my freshman year of high school.”

It was a memorable debut.

“Actually, in warmups, we were just passing and the ball hit me right in the nose,” Emily said.

“She was bleeding everywhere,” Jessica said.

Emily spent all of warmups getting the bleeding to stop.

“When it was game time, coach asked if I was OK,” Emily said. “I said yes and she’s like, ‘Are you ready to go in?’ I was like, ‘Yes!’ “I was super pumped because it was my first high school game.”

The Flynts have been a force of nature since. They never tire of the game.

“No,” they said simultaneously, smiling.

“We love it,” Jessica said.

“It’s the sport for us,” Emily said.

Bowyer breaks 190-race drought Watson surges in Ryder Cup team rankings

MARTINSVILLE, Va. — Monday’s STP 500 didn’t start off as the Clint Bowyer show, but for the veteran who hadn’t seen Victory Lane since October 2012, the ninth win of his career will be one to remember.

It had been 190 races since Bowyer last won, and for one of the big stars in the sport, the move to Stewart-Haas Racing has finally paid dividends.

Bowyer led 215 of the 500 laps at Martinsville Speedway, all of them in the final 240-lap segment, to close the race and get the coveted Grandfather Clock that serves as a trophy at one of NASCAR’s most storied tracks.

“You know, to have it come here, this is a place where I have come so close to winning the Grandfather Clock,” he said of the track in Virginia. “It was just time. It was so cool driving up here and it felt good.”

Keselowski was fourth and Hamlin rounded out the top five.

When the final 240-lap stage began, Blaney was still out front after pit stops.

NASCAR now takes a week off for the Easter holiday and is back in action at 2 p.m. April 8 at Texas Motor Speedway for the O’Reilly Auto Parts 500 on the 1.5-mile D-shaped oval. It’s the last weekend off for the Cup series until June 17, a span of 11 races.

Nemechek hangs on for truck win

MARTINSVILLE, Va. — In a race delayed for two days by a freak snowstorm in southern Virginia, John Hunter Nemechek charged to the front on a restart with 31 laps left Monday and held off Kyle Benjamin to win the Alpha Energy Solutions 250 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race by a mere .106 seconds.

The victory was the first at Martinsville for Nemechek, who had two previous runner-up finishes at the .526-mile short track.

This time, despite Benjamin pounding his rear bumper in the final corner, Nemechek earned the grandfather clock trophy that goes to the race winner.

“I’ve finished second here multiple times so, tick, tock — we finally got a clock,” Nemechek said.

“It’s going to be awesome to take that thing home.”

Nemechek picked up his sixth career win in the Truck Series in his third start of the season, and he did it with a skeleton staff at the race shop owned by his father, Joe Nemechek.

“I can’t thank everyone on our staff enough — everyone who pours their heart and soul into this deal,” Nemechek said.

After Nemechek grabbed the top spot on Lap 220 of 250, he held it through three subsequent cautions. Nemechek cleared Benjamin after the final restart on Lap 244, and though Benjamin closed on the No. 8 Chevrolet over the last seven laps, finally getting to the bumper in the final corner, he needed a few more laps to make a concerted run at the victory.

“We had a really good truck, mostly for long runs, and unfortunately, it

came down to a short run,” said Benjamin, who was making his Martinsville debut. “It’s Martinsville, so I figured I had to give him a run for his money in the last corner.”

Benjamin had a lead of more than one second over Todd Gilliland when a debris caution slowed the race on Lap 214 and gave Nemechek the chance he needed on the subsequent restart. The shuffling of the order, at least, alleviated one case of divided loyalties.

Pole winner Ben Rhodes led the first 23 laps Saturday before rain and snow halted the race. With heavy snow falling Saturday night and early Sunday morning, NASCAR was forced to postpone the finish until Monday.

Rhodes won both the first and second stages of the race, collecting two playoff points, but severe trouble with his right front tire on a Lap 145 pit stop after the second stage dropped him to 15th in the running order.

Rhodes never recovered from the loss of track position and came home 12th.

Johnny Sauter lost two laps changing a battery after losing power on Lap 224 and getting rear-ended

Brett Moffitt, who pitted late for new tires, fought his way up to third at the finish and is third in points, 31 behind Sauter.

Work involves frequent standing, bending, stooping, lifting & stretching. Work outdoors in hot & cold weather & lift up to 50 lbs frequently. Temp position, F/T, 40 hrs/ wk. Employer will offer 40 hrs of work/wk, M-F 6A-3P, depending on weather conditions.

Workers will be paid no less than 13.83/hr.

Workers will be paid by check on Fri (bi-wkly).

Employer will use a single workweek as its standard for computing wages due. No overtime req’d. The employer will make all deductions from the worker’s paycheck req’d by law.

Work on Sat’s may be req’d. Workers needed to begin work on 4/1/181/31/19. Employer will on-the-job provide training in proper use & maintenance of landscaping power tools & Employer equipment. will provide workers at no charge all tools, supplies, & equipment in order to perform job duties. Employer shall pay directly (or alternatively reimburse workers in the first workweek) for any visa, border crossing & other related fees, incl those mandated by the gov’t (except passport fees). Travel to various job sites around the metropolitan statistical area of the city of Atlanta, incl Fulton, DeKalb, Gwinnett counties, to customers sites to perform landscaping services. Workers are responsible for daily transport to & from the designated pick-up loc at the Duluth office.

Employer will then provide each work crew w/ daily transp among the customer worksite locations. Transp from employer’s loc to multiple customer work sites will be provided. If the worker completes 50% of the work contract period, employer will arrange & pay directly for transp & subsistence from the place of recruitment to the place of work. Upon completion of the work contract or where the worker is dismissed earlier, employer will provide or pay for worker s reasonable costs of return transp & subsistence back home or to the place the worker originally departed to work, except where the worker will not return due to subsequent employment w/ another employer. The amount of transp payment or reimbursement will be equal to the most economical & reasonable common carrier for the distances involved.

Daily subsistence will be provided at a rate of $12.07/day during travel to a max of $51.00/day w/ receipts. The employer guarantees to offer work for hrs equal to at least 3/4 of the workdays in each 12-wk period of the total employment period.
