Two Gwinnett residents were arrested as part of an eight-state investigation, titled Operation Southern Impact II, to curb child exploi-

tation that yielded 76 arrests total, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation announced Friday. Thirteen children were also rescued or identified as victims. The operation, which was coordinated by nine Internet Crimes Against

Children Task Forces in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia, focused on “persons who possess and distribute child pornography and those who are sexually exploiting

children in other ways using technology and the internet,” a GBI news release said. Those arrested range in age from 17 — a Forsyth County student from Suwanee, Forsyth County Schools spokeswoman Jennifer Caracciolo con-

firmed to the Daily Post — to 72. According to the GBI, the operation’s planning began about four months ago and “culminated in two days of investigative actions to include search warrant executions, undercover operations

and arrests” in the eight states. A total of 222 law enforcement and prosecutorial agencies participated in the operation. In Georgia, 34 people were arrested, many of See OPERATION, Page 5A

On Thursday, 7-yearold Tripp Halstead’s supporters learned through social media that the boy had died from an infecTripp Halstead tion after a brief stint in the hospital, with his parents by his side. “His little body was just done fighting this last infection,” his mother, Stacy Halstead, wrote in a Facebook post on Tripp Halstead Updates, a page that has more than 1.3 million followers. “His little heart gave out. Clad in green and with beverages in hand from more than 350 breweries, guests celebrated St. Patrick’s Day. “All week we had been watching the weather and we had a running joke that we wouldn’t talk about it to

make sure we didn’t jinx it,” festival marketing director Rachel Pillow said. Despite an early morning shower, people came out in droves.
