Area grad who drowned in Lake Lanier mourned BY ISABEL HUGHES
isabel.hughes@gwinnettdailypost.com
Family, friends, former teammates and school officials are mourning the loss of a 21-year-old Central Gwinnett High School graduate who drowned in Lake Lanier late Saturday afternoon after going into “distress” in the water. Karon Antiwoin Jackson of Lawrenceville was found in about 10 feet of water nearly an hour after rescuers began searching for him off Lanier
Park in Buford around 4 p.m. that day, according to Gwinnett fire spokesman Justin Wilson. Gwinnett County 911 call-takers had Karon received a call from Jackson Jackson’s friends saying they had “swum out to the boundary of the beach area at the park and were returning to shore when (Jackson) went into distress and under
the surface of the water,” Wilson said. Multiple bystanders attempted to help the man without success, he said. Jackson, who graduated from Central Gwinnett in 2015, played basketball at the school, earning All-Region 8-AAAAAA honors as a senior after the 2014-15 season. His former coach, Branden Mayweather, told the Daily Post that he and others were “devastated” by the news of Jackson’s drowning.
Local responders arrived at Buford’s Lanier Park shortly after 4 p.m. after receiving 911 calls about a swimmer who had drowned, according to Gwinnett fire spokesman Justin Wilson. (Special Photo)
