Bang! The plexiglass partition that separated the back of Master Patrol Officer Nicholas Bezon’s patrol car from its front rattled, the acrylic divider vibrating from the force of the blow. “You’ve got to be kidding

me,” Bezon said under his breath, an expletive interjected into the middle of the sentence. In Bezon’s back seat, 21-year-old Jhalil Joseph lay on his left shoulder, messy dreadlocks falling around his slumped head and bleeding face. Though Joseph arguably caused the greatest commotion

Davis For two weeks in April they were part of a team of 11 linemen who built 9 miles of power line to San Isidro Chris and MurmutaWallace ni, two places that had been waiting 10 years for the ability to plug in a radio or a television. The project was funded by National Rural Electric Cooperative Association International Foundation, which represents more than 900 not-for-profit electric cooperatives and public power districts from around the United States. “I went down there expecting to help people,” said Davis, 39, of Winder. “I didn’t realize how much it would affect their lives.” Getting to the work site wasn’t easy. The crew flew to Miami, then took a 6.5hour flight to La Paz, where another connection dropped them in Cochabamba, the country’s fourth-largest city. That’s where they set up shop each day and took a 45-minute ride into villages. This wasn’t going to be the typical work detail, either. The team — which included crew members from four other Georgia EMCs — had

to depend on their years of skill and training to get the job done. It wasn’t any place for a rookie; Wallace has 16 years of experience and Davis has 19.

The crew worked from 7:30 a.m. to around 6 p.m., when it began to get dark. They used old-school equipment and were forced to climb the power poles rather than rely

on a modern lift to hoist them to the top. And they labored all day in the thin air found at their 13,000-foot elevation. It
