Woman charged with stabbing, killing mom 35-year-old told police victim hurt herself FROM STAFF REPORTS

Jacquelyn Craft

A 35-year-old woman is in jail after allegedly stabbing her mother to death Monday night in unincorporated Snellville. Gwinnett police responded to

a report of a death at 3809 Leach Road about 11:30 p.m. Jacquelyn Craft reported that her mother, Evelyn Craft, had stabbed herself to death, according to Gwinnett Police Sgt. Jake Smith. He said officers located the

victim deceased from apparent stab wounds. “Responding officers found the circumstances suspicious and contacted Homicide Unit detectives,” Smith said. “Detectives and the Crime Scene Unit investigated further and found evidence which contradicted Jacquelyn Craft’s

story.” Police arrested Jacquelyn Craft and have charged her with aggravated assault and felony murder. She remains in custody at the Gwinnett County Detention Center without bond. Both women lived at the home where the alleged crime occurred.

The scribbling of notes and the soft echo of aspirin being crushed by 13 pairs hands resonated through one of the Georgia Campus of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine’s pharmacy labs. Under the guidance of future pharmacists and doctors, a select group of students from Meadowcreek and Berkmar high schools were learning how to take a solid pill form of aspirin and make it into a liquid form, something common in the pharmaceutical field. This activity is one of many different hands-on lectures and labs that students from the two Gwinnett County public schools have participated

in for the past two weeks as part of GA-PCOM’s Opportunities Camp. In its second year, the camp serves to allow local high school students interested in health care careers a chance learn more about the field. The program’s primary goal is to increase the number of underrepresented minorities in health care careers. The camp began June 18 and has allowed students to dissect a pig heart and a sheep brain while learning about anatomy, as well as study case studies in diabetes and mental illness. See PCOM, Page 6A

Gwinnett County is worried that the stormwater system south of Gwinnett Place Mall, as well as a section of Venture Drive in Duluth, is in danger of failing because of two sinkholes that formed in the area last week. The county has filed a lawsuit in Gwinnett Superior Court against the owners of two adjacent properties on Venture Drive where the sinkholes formed Thursday. The sinkholes formed on the edges of properties owned by Venture Outlet Mall and Best Friends Development Inc., including in a parking lot connecting the properties and a stormwater detention pond that they share. County officials have said the sinkholes formed because an underground stormwater pipe that they claim Venture Outlet Mall and Best Friends Development are responsible for failed. Venture owns the Santa Fe Mall, and Best Friends owns the property that houses Sam’s Club. “It is apparent that Venture is not going to repair the sinkholes or the failing stormwater pipe, or perform any repairs without court intervention,” county officials said in the lawsuit. “It is not yet known whether Best Friends will accept responsibility for repair and ongoing maintenance of the sinkholes or the failing stormwater pipe which caused the same.” The county wants the court to order Venture Outlet Mall and Best Friends Development to repair the sinkholes, or to authorize county crews to go on the property to take steps to secure a stormwater manhole on Venture Drive itself. County officials are asserting that Venture Outlet Mall owner Fred Filsoof has repeatedly refused to repair the sinkholes,

This sinkhole caused a large section of driveway connecting the parking lots of the Santa Fe Mall and Sam’s Club to collapse Thursday. Gwinnett County officials are now suing the property owners to get them to repair this hole and another one that also formed in the same driveway. (File Photo)
