Hudgens Education Center drops toddler care BY TREVOR MCNABOE trevor.mcnaboe@gwinnettdailypost.com

Gwinnett Technical College is making changes to its program at the D. Scott Hudgens Jr. Early Education Center, an on-campus early childhood care and learning facility, beginning July 1. In a letter dated June 4, Gwinnett Tech Acting President David Welden said the college will no longer be offering infant and toddler programs. The announcement left some parents shocked. “The move is a betrayal of the center’s founding mission and of the donors and community members who helped to make this great vision a reality,” said Aimee See GWINNETT TECH, Page 6A

Lanier Island Management’s Virgil Williams, from left, Margaritaville Chief Marketing Officer Tamara Baldanza-Dekker, Safe Harbor Development President Darby Campbell and Margaritaville CEO John Cohlan raise cans of Landshark to toast the opening of Margaritaville at Lanier Islands on Wednesday. The attraction opened under the Margaritaville format seven weeks ago. Right now, it includes the beach and water park area, and offers cruises on Lake Lanier, but the officials who run it want to eventually grow it into a major attraction that is well-known across the southeast. Minimum wage work can’t pay apartment rent anywhere in U.S. BY ISABEL HUGHES isabel.hughes@gwinnettdailypost.com

Though the economy is booming and employment numbers are up across the nation, finding affordable housing is still difficult for many, and, for much of the country’s lowest-paid workers, making ends meet with even the cheapest monthly rent is out of reach. According to an annual report released Wednesday by the National Low Income Housing Coalition, nowhere in America can a minimumwage employee working a standard, 40-hour week afford a two-bedroom apartment. The report, which is titled “Out of Reach,” documents the gap between wages and the cost of rental housing across the United States yearly, examining the more than 3,000 counties that comprise all 50 states.
