“Before leaving for Namibia I was apprehensive about what was going to come out of this trip,” Nelson said. “I was unsure if I was going to enjoy myself or if the whole experience would leave me with any impact. But the camp very quickly changed my mind and from the first or second day I knew I made a great choice by coming.” Nelson was one of 100 girls from the United States, Ethiopia, Kenya, Namibia and eSwatini — the county formerly known as Swaziland — who took part in the
camp, which ran from June 17-29. It offered participants opportunities to explore various STEAM fields, as well as receive mentorship and leadership training. “Being surrounded by the girls from Kenya, Ethiopia, eSwatini, and Namibia and hearing about all of their struggles being female back in their home countries also helped me realize how privileged I am to be American,” Nelson said.
