They dressed in patriotic fashion for the event, with Jessica wearing sparkled star antennas and red, white and blue streamers in her hair while Dewey wore a USA basketball jersey.

“We didn’t get to do anything last year because he was working, and we’re about to celebrate six years of being married, so this is kind of our little six-year thing that we’ve got going on,” Jessica Hicks said.

BUFORD — Bouncy houses, slides, climbing towers, food, music and fireworks. What more could people ask for on the Fourth of July?

The Mall of Georgia hosted the 15th annual Star Spangled Fourth on Tuesday as thousands of residents from Gwinnett and surrounding counties came out to celebrate.

For many families, the number of activities for kids was the driving force for them coming out.

“There are a lot of kid-friendly activities out here,” said Cumming resident Jamie Short, who was there with his wife and two kids. “It’s been a while since we’ve been here, so we figured today would be a great day to come.”

For Short’s youngest child, the fireworks would be his first, something Short said he is looking forward to.

“He’s never seen them, so it will be interesting to see how he reacts.”

For Snellville resident Dorinda Quarshie, a quick internet search for the day’s events brought her to the Buford mall, and she wasn’t disappointed — nor were her kids.

“This was the closest thing to us, and we wanted to see the fireworks,” she said. “Plus, they’re showing ‘The See MALL, Page 7A

Gwinnett proposing higher tax rate to address retention issues

Gwinnett County commissioners will hold three public hearings later this month to give residents a chance to weigh in on the county’s plans to raise property taxes this year.

Officials are proposing

a 7.4-mill rate, which is up from the rate of 6.826 mills that was adopted last year.

Charlotte Officials Nash said the millage rate, or property tax, increase will give of-

ficials the opportunity to do two things. One is to balance the budget, and the other is to begin setting aside money that can be used in the future to address hiring and retention issues.

Hunter issue prompts talk of diversity, race relations

For some people in Gwinnett, the controversial comments made by Commissioner Tommy Hunter on Facebook, which have sparked months of protests at commission meetings, isn’t the problem.

To them, Tommy it’s just a Hunter symptom of a larger issue of race relations and a lack of diversity in the county’s top local elected positions as well as top appointed roles in county government. The topic has been broached by some speakers at public comment periods during commission meetings over the last few months.

“That’s our next fight,” Okoye said.

There are two distinct, although related, lines of thought about what issues have been exposed after news of Hunter’s social media comments, including calling U.S. Rep. John Lewis a “racist pig,” came to light in January.

One line of thought is that it has shed light on a diversity issue in county government. Each of the five county commission members is white, as are most of the appointed department heads.

Okoye first raised the issue during a commission meeting Feb. 8, when he cited figures he gathered himself which compared

the makeup of the Gwinnett County commission to those of commissions in the comparable neighboring counties of Cobb, DeKalb and Fulton.

The Fulton County commission’s makeup is currently split between three African-Americans and three whites, although there is also one vacant seat on the commission.

The DeKalb County commission is split between four African-Americans and three whites.

Meanwhile, the Cobb County commission is less split, with four white members and one AfricanAmerican. Cobb County also previously had an African-American county manager, but he retired May 1.

Okoye has argued that Gwinnett, which is larger than every other Georgia county except Fulton, should have similar diversity on its county commission and among its departments heads, especially since it is a majority-minority county.

He concedes the makeup of the commission is up to the voters of the county, but he has said appointed positions are a different story.

“The commissioners are elected, I have no problem with that,” Okoye told the Daily Post in February. “But why is it that the County Administrator, Mr. (Glenn) Stephens is white, the deputy (county administrator) is white, (Communications Director) Joe Sorenson is white and the clerk is white.

“Is there no qualified non-white person for these appointed positions in a population of close to one million people?”

Commission Chairwoman Charlotte Nash previously told the Daily Post the county is trying to increase the amount of diversity in its appointed positions and that she anticipated that, as positions become available, people who reflect greater diversity could be promoted or hired to fill those positions.

The other line of thought that has emerged from the Hunter situation is that it has exposed racial issues in the county, even though county officials often praise Gwinnett for its diverse population.

Susan Clymer, who has regularly spoken at commission meetings since the protests began, said it is not enough to focus on getting Hunter out of office anymore. She asserts that this needs to be treated as an opportunity to bring about substantive change in Gwinnett in terms of race relations and how diversity is handled.

“If we are just focused on getting rid of Tommy Hunter, nothing will change,” Clymer said.

“Unless we really address the underlying issue of racism, and really tackle it, whether it’s through book discussions, through our elections or whatever, nothing will change.”

In April, protesters linked Hunter’s comments to another incident this spring involving two white Gwinnett County police officers who were fired after video emerged of them beating an African-American man on a street during a traffic stop.

“If the mentality of a commissioner is one of abuse, insult and disrespect, then that mentality trickles down to other county officials, including the police,” Lawrenceville resident Maxine Wheatley told commissioners during a commission meeting April 18. “We need to correct this. We need to take action. We need to address these issues here in Gwinnett County.”

Clymer has encouraged commissioners to read the book “Waking Up White,” which deals with the issue of “white privilege,” and that call has not fallen on deaf ears. During last month’s public hearing reprimanding Hunter, Commissioner John Heard said he began reading it because of Clymer’s recommendation.

“Being born and raised in North Georgia, I didn’t realize what white privilege meant, and I don’t know that I still do, but I’ve come a long way in understanding some of it,” Heard said at the June 20 hearing. “I do know that the strength of Gwinnett County — this 21st Century Gwinnett — is something that we are addressing.

“The Gwinnett of the 21st century is strong because of our diversity. It is the best asset we have, and if we don’t embrace it and we don’t acknowledge it and advertise it, then we’re the losers for it.”

The family had been floating down the river, heading to East Jones Bridge Park, when the father got sick.

“Gwinnett Fire and Johns Creek Fire both responded to the river with their Swiftwater Rescue Teams,” Rutledge said. “While the boats were deployed in the river for a search, a crew of Gwinnett firefighters on the riverbank made visual contact with the group from a distance.

“The rescue boat from Johns Creek Fire was close and made it out to the group on the water.”

After the father was taken onto land at Medlock Bridge Park at 7:28 p.m., paramedics evaluated him for possible transportation to a local hospital. Rutledge said the other family members did not complain about injuries and were given a courtesy ride to East Jones Bridge Park.

Testosterone treatment reserved for men with symptoms DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 70-year-old male. I receive testosterone injections (in the butt) from my provider every three weeks, and have been receiving these injections for roughly five years.

My provider reviews my bloodwork every six months before he writes a prescription renewal for testosterone, which I then take to his office for safekeeping and the regular injections. My latest bloodwork indicates that my testosterone serum is low at 310, and free testosterone is low at 4.9. After five years of injections, I continue to have low T; it does not seem to be improving. At my most recent visit, the doctor increased the injection dosage from 2 ml to 3 ml. I am concerned because of the heart, prostate and other risk factors I read about. Any advice or cause for concern?

— M.M. ANSWER: Testosterone treatment is indicated for men with symptoms of low testosterone levels and confirmed by blood testing. It is not a “tonic” to be used without due consideration.

There has long been concern about adverse effects of testosterone, especially to the prostate and to the heart. Most prostate cancer is testosteronesensitive, and removing testosterone was one of the oldest treatments for prostate cancer. However, restoring normal levels of testosterone in a man with low levels is now considered to have low potential for increasing prostate cancer. It has not been definitively proven to be safe, but the many studies that have been done have been reassuring. Authorities recommend more-aggressive prostate cancer screening for men on testosterone treatment.

Athletes using extremely high doses of testosterone (many times greater than the doses you are taking) are at risk for heart attack and stroke. However, these data cannot be used to consider the risk in men who are prescribed testosterone with a low level, where the goal is to get to normal.

Testosterone treatment reduces several key risk factors, including cholesterol. Most of the welldone studies show little if any risk from testosterone treatment; some have shown some benefit.

Since the dose you were getting wasn’t bringing your blood level up, I think increasing it is appropriate.

The usual goal is a blood level of 500-600, but that may not be appropriate for everybody.

North Korea claims to have conducted its first successful test of a long-range missile that it says can “reach anywhere in the world.”

Tuesday morning’s missile test reached a height of 1,741 miles, according to state broadcaster Korea Central Television, which would be the highest altitude a North Korean missile had ever reached.

The country claimed it was an intercontinental ballistic missile, or ICBM, which would put the United States on notice that Pyongyang could potentially hit the U.S. mainland.

U.S. military analysts believe it probably was a two-stage ICBM, a U.S. official with knowledge of the Americans’ analysis said.

North Korea appears to have timed the launch for maximum political effect, giving the order to fire on the eve of the July Fourth holiday, just days after President Donald Trump spoke with Japanese and Chinese leaders about the North Korean threat and before this week’s G20 meeting.

Donald Trump, Insulter in Chief A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.” (Proverbs 15:1) President Trump once referred to the health care bill passed by the House as “mean.” So how should we characterize his remarks about MSNBC “Morning Joe” co-host Mika Brzezinski? The president of the United States, reacting to her criticism of him, claimed Brzezinski was “bleeding” from a facelift when he saw her last New Year’s Eve at his Florida resort. He further described her as being “dumb as a rock.”

That’s worse than mean.

It’s cruel.

In my Cal experience Thomas of having been insulted for things I have written and said, the personal attack achieves nothing, except perhaps to make the attacker feel good. It almost always invites a similar response.

In an interview with the magazine InStyle, Brzezinski speculated that first lady Melania Trump wants out of her marriage: “I know Melania. I haven’t talked to her in months, but if my gut is right, I don’t think she’s going to put up with it much longer. I know nothing.

That’s just my instinct and I go with my gut and my gut’s always right.”

That, too, was a cruel thing to say. See what I mean? I recall an old joke that when you fight “an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth” all you will get out of it in the end is two blind and toothless people.

Mrs. Trump fired back in a tweet through her communications director, saying she supports her husband and when he is insulted he will “punch back 10 times harder.” In a speech last November, she denounced cyber bullying: “We have to find a better way to talk to each other.” Yes, we do.

Leaving aside the president’s legitimate claim that most of the liberal media are against him and his policies, what good does it do to engage in personal insults, especially against people who do not have anything close to presidential power? Fewer than 1 million people watch “Morning Joe.” The president commands the attention of the entire nation.

Sen. Susan Collins, R-ME, reacted to the insulting presidential tweets, telling the New York Times: “I don’t think it directly affects the negotiation on the health care bill, but it is undignified — it’s beneath a president of the United States and just so contrary to the way we expect a president to act. People may say things during a campaign, but it’s different when you become a public servant. I don’t see it as undermining his ability to negotiate legislation, necessarily, but I see it as embarrassing to our country.”

Other Republicans have expressed similar sentiments and called on the president to stop the insults.

What should get the president’s attention is a poll conducted by Fox News, his favorite network. Taken just before his comments about Brzezinski, the poll found that 71 percent of respondents believe the president’s tweets are hurting his agenda. Just 17 percent see them as helpful.

During the campaign Mr. Trump promised to win so much we would grow tired of winning. I’m not tired yet.

He should focus on his policies, which are appealing to most Republicans and conservatives, and I would argue will benefit the most people. From putting constitutionalists on the federal courts, to curtailing illegal immigration, repealing and replacing Obamacare, reforming the tax code, cutting spending, defeating ISIS and much more, these are issues his supporters care most about. Winning has a way of silencing one’s opponents.

The president has said his tweeting is a way around the media, but using tweets to insult people does not benefit him, or his agenda. Much of the world, which is used to looking to America for leadership, is appalled by his behavior.

The president should cool it with the tweets for a while — at least the insulting ones — turn off the TV, stop reading newspapers (except my column!) and focus on pursuing his agenda. If he won’t, he will be playing into the hands of his opponents. Winning a policy battle is far better than trying to win a battle of insults. That’s a fool’s pursuit.

I offer my gratitude because after years of being the last of my immigrant family members to undertake the naturalization process, my mother just took the oath to become a U.S. citizen.

It finally happened after 10 years of prodding and needling and of painting doomsday scenarios about crazy, obscure ways that legal permanent residents can accidentally become deportable. For instance, paperwork mishaps like failing to file a change of address form to the Department of Homeland Security within 10 days of a move could put a green card holder at risk of fines, jail or even deportation.

But, ultimately, all it took was a new president promising to do his best to rid the country of immigrants to get her to undertake the long, arduous process.

She started her application process less than a month after the November election and now I can sleep easy knowing that no bureaucratic slip-up will send my mom back to the country where she spent only the first third of her life.

My mom was hardly alone in hesitating to make the leap.

They joyously swore to support our Constitution, renounce allegiance to all other countries and also vowed to bear arms on behalf of the United States when required by the law.

That’s right, America, my mom’s got your back!

Hopefully, President Trump will inspire an unprecedented number of immigrants to become new Americans. And may they be energized to help others attain the safety of citizenship.

Today’s kids need a taste of parents’ 1970s summertime Ah, summer is upon us.

That means the media are publishing a spate of articles that offer tips to parents on how to make their kids go outside and play — some of the articles encourage parents to let their kids experience a 1970s childhood.

I grew up in the Pittsburgh suburbs in the 1970s, and it truly was a glorious time to be a kid in America.

We went on bike hikes deep into the hills, visiting the game reserve in the county park to feed the buffalo (there really were buffalo there!). Or we’d find the steepest hill and race to the bottom.

Some days, we’d play baseball from dawn until dinner.

Or we’d go down to the creek and build a dam out of rocks, then catch frogs, crayfish and minnows.

One of my favorite activities was building shacks and forts.

With all the new houses going up nearby, we were able to scarf some scrap materials and use our imagination to design and build our own little dreams.

Or we’d dabble in a little mischief. It was a primitive hunting instinct that led us

Tom Purcell to whip rotten pears at moving cars. Everyone once in a while, a driver would screech to a halt, cuss, then chase after us. We’d escape by running through a dark, 500-foot creek aqueduct that ran under the neighborhood.

The only real rules for kids then were that we were given lots of trust until we messed up, and that we be home for dinner.

I still hear my father’s booming voice ricocheting off the hills: “Tom, dinner! Tom, dinner!” Some families used bells or horns to call their kids home.

And summer dinners were grand. My father grilled up chicken or pork chops, while my sisters and I brought the salad, vegetables and potato

salad out from the kitchen.

My mother made sun tea most days, and after several hours exploring the woods, those summer dinners always hit the spot.

After dinner, we’d listen to broadcaster Bob Prince announce the Pirates’ games — “You can kiss it goodbye!” he’d say when Wilver “Willie” Stargell smacked one into the upper deck. And after cleaning up, we’d head on up to the woods. We’d play the games we invented until darkness settled over the hills.

Too few kids are experiencing such activities playing outside these days. Thus, they’re suffering from NatureDeficit Disorder, a term coined by journalist Richard Louv in his book “Last Child in the Woods.”

Louv spent 10 years traveling around America, interviewing parents, kids, teachers, researchers and others to learn about children’s experiences with nature. His findings: During the last 30 years, our sensationalist media have “scared children straight out of the woods and fields.” Parents are afraid to let kids out of their

sight — afraid their kids might get hurt.

Add to that the advent of television, video games and the internet, and the result is this: Kids aren’t getting out much anymore. And because they’re not getting out, they’re withdrawing from nature — the chief place where they use all five of their senses at once.

“We don’t yet know why it happens, but when all five of a child’s senses come alive, a child is at an optimum state of learning,” Louv told me. “Creativity and cognitive functioning go way up.”

The consequences of withdrawing from nature are not good. Kids lose their sense of being rooted in the world.

They’re more likely to experience stress, hyperactivity, attention-deficit disorder and other modern maladies.

Thankfully, there is a solution: Allow today’s kids to get a taste of the glorious ’70s childhood experiences their parents got to enjoy not so long ago.

A female passenger in a stolen Nissan died Saturday night after the man driving the car steered into oncoming traffic at a Suwanee intersection trying to flee from a Forsyth sheriff’s deputy.

At about 10 p.m. Saturday, at least two suspects stole a car from the Shell Gas station on Buford Highway near Samples Road in Forsyth. Those suspects were allegedly Alston Wade Spence, 28, and Andrea Allison, 38.

The victims called 911, and moments later a Forsyth Sheriff’s Office K-9 unit patrolling Buford Dam Road saw the stolen 2003 Nissan.

Spence was reportedly driving. When the deputy tried to stop the Nissan, Spence fled down Buford Dam Road into Gwinnett County.

Throughout the chase, Spence drove more than 20 miles above the speed limit, failed to obey stop lights and passed cars in a no-passing zone. When he got to the intersection of Sycamore and Appling roads, Spence took a curve incorrectly and drove over the double-yellow lines and began driving

on the wrong side of the road at about 10:50 p.m., according to warrants.

That’s Alston Wade when he hit Spence an oncoming car. Allison was ejected from her seat and died at the scene.

The four passengers in the other car were all treated for non-life-threatening injuries, according to Forsyth County Sheriff’s Dep. Doug Rainwater.

Spence was booked into Gwinnett County jail on Sunday at 6:31 a.m., according to the jail log. In his jail mugshot, he’s wearing a neck brace and sporting a large bandage on his forehead. Spence is facing nine charges including felony vehicluar homicide, fleeing or attempting to elude police and driving on the wrong side of the road.

Officials also realized Spence was driving with a license that had been suspended since 2013.

Spence is being held without bond. The Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office had a hold on him and he’s also wanted in Hall County for a felony probation violation.

PUBLIC NOTICE TAX INCREASE The Gwinnett County Tax Assessor is required to review the assessed value of property in the county which includes the cities on a regular basis.

When there is a change in the fair market value of property, the Tax Assessor must adjust the value of real property to reflect that fair market value of real property in the County. This process is known as property reassessment.

The Lawrenceville City Council is carrying out a deliberate strategy to increase the quality of life for the citizens of the City by providing additional high quality municipal services. In previous years the City has rolled back the millage rate so that there was a net tax savings. By not ‘rolling back’ the millage and adopting a millage of 2.025, which is the same as last year, instead of 1.909, the City must advertise a tax increase.

The City of Lawrenceville has tentatively adopted a millage rate which will require an increase in property taxes by 6.08%. Wesleyan has county’s top returning passer, but needs to make sure Ramsey has receiving options

Having an experienced quarterback, especially Gwinnett’s leading returning passer from last season, is a luxury a lot of county teams would love to have as the high school football season approaches.

But even with Banks Ramsey back for his fourth season as his starter, Wesleyan coach Franklin Pridgen and his offensive staff knows there are still plenty of challenges ahead before the Wolves kick off the 2017 campaign Aug. 18 against Therrell.

The biggest one will be developing the kind of depth and reliability at receiver that will give the 6-foot-5, 215-pound senior the same variety of targets to throw to that he had a year ago, when he threw for 2,778 yards and 31 touchdowns.

“Having Banks back (at quarterback), because of his experience and physical ability and also his versatility, is going to be a big deal for us,” Pridgen said. “The receiver question is something we’ve been answering with all the passing work we’ve been doing in 7-on-7 tournaments.”

On the surface, it seems like a tall order with the team’s top two receivers from last season

— Harrison Cook, Gwinnett’s leader in receptions (70) and yards (1,061), along with 14 TDs, second in the county, and Grant Frerking (53-747, 10 TD) — lost to graduation, plus Grant Summers (31-364, TD) having given up football to concentrate on basketball.

But based on what he’s seen during spring practice and summer 7-on-7 work, Pridgen

is very optimistic with how this year’s receiver corps is developing, and the chemistry they’re building with Ramsey.

J.D. Kavel moves over to receiver after serving as Ramsey’s back-up under center last year, while Wesleyan will also benefit from the addition of Johns Creek transfer Tommy Tremble, a 6-4, 225-pound senior and three-star rated tight end.

But the Wolves will particularly lean on one of the few experienced returning receivers in senior Zach Peterson, who hauled in 43 passes for 567 yards and five touchdowns in 2016.

“Zach is a senior and was among the top five (receivers in Gwinnett County) last year,” Pridgen said. “J.D. was our back-up quarterback last year, and this year, we’ve moved him full-time to receiver. He’s done beautifully. Those two guys have helped answer the (depth) question. We also have a newcomer, (Tremble), who is a very athletic tight end who can split out wide and play some receiver, and he’s going to be a big target for Banks. So those three guys, along with a healthy supporting cast — another senior named Brae Davidson and Stewart Stamper — those guys right there will give Banks really good targets.”

Peterson’s experience will

be particularly important early on as the newcomers gains more comfort with the Wesleyan offensive system and their receiving routes.

But according to Pridgen, the biggest adjustment the newer receivers will have to make lie more in the very fabric of the program, rather than the Xs and Os. Once again, he’s liked what he’s seen from the less experienced players in that area thus far.

“Trying to acclimate them into our culture — whether it’s a young guy coming in or a newcomer joining us, they’ve got to get acquainted with who we are,” Pridgen said.

“Wesleyan is a different place.

We’re not like everybody else.

We do things differently. We have very high standards, and we look at football being more than just a game.

“So they have to get accustomed to our identity, and they’ve done that and I’m really proud of them for that.

They’ve definitely embraced Banks and we have a lot of younger kids who we’re trying to do the same things with. So we’re trying to acclimate the incoming freshmen along with some of these new additions.

So far, it’s been a great month (since spring practice). It’s one of our best Junes in recent memory.”

John Harris stands alone, a symbol of past Mill Creek offensive lines.

The Virginia Tech commit stands 6-foot-4, 280 pounds, a large highschooler by most standards but not for his high school football program, which has averaged around that weight on the front for several seasons.

Once another big body on a high school line full of them, Harris is the oddity for the Hawks as he prepares for his senior season. His fellow linemates figure to be considerably smaller than the Mill Creek lines of late, and more like the typical high school lineman.

“It’s a hard-working group that will probably be different because we’re not near the size we’ve had the last four years or so,” Mill Creek offensive line coach and assistant head coach Josh Lovelady said. “Harris is 280 and then we’ve got a bunch of 240, 230, compared to the 275, 280 we’ve had the last however many years.”

Harris also is the lone returning player with significant varsity experience, having played on Mill Creek teams that have advanced deep in the playoffs in recent seasons. The other four starters up front last year — Tyler Fannin (6-4, 295), Jack Franklin (6-4, 315), Nick Campbell (6-2, 280) and Collin Janowski (6-2, 260) — all graduated. Fannin, a Virginia signee, was the Gwinnett Touchdown Club’s Offensive Lineman of the Year in 2015 and 2016.

The exodus of linemen left four spots open alongside Harris. Lovelady said the competition was stiff in the spring for those openings, and it will continue into the preseason practices with five players vying for the four starting roles.

Seniors Daniel Wakesa and Zion Barjolo have made their mark, as have juniors Max Mixon, Jonathan Leech and Ethan Marshall.

“Right now, it’s those five and Harris that have stepped up through spring,” Lovelady said. “We still have four spots and it’s a wide-open process. The biggest thing is getting these guys to understand we’re not rebuilding. It’s a next-man-up mentality.”

Lovelady expects the same consistent performance from his revamped line, which also will block for a very different offense, one that was hit hard by graduation. Senior Brady Longenecker is the favorite to replace pro-style passer Cameron Turley, a Georgia Tech baseball signee, at quarterback. Cole Wroble is the most experienced running back coming back.

A nice boost up front also comes from two experienced tight ends, seniors Adrian Jackson and Andrew Johns.

How those tight ends play, as well as the linemen next to them, play this season will be a telling factor if the Hawks can match their offensive production of the past. They averaged 39.4 points last season with a balanced attack that averaged 182.3 passing yards and 156.9 rushing yards.

“We’re going to adjust our schemes slightly to our talent and where we’re more talented,” Lovelady said. “Over the years, we’ve done more passing some, more running some. You’ve got to be able to do it all. With Jacorey Lewis (at running back), we ran it all the time.

With Turley, he was more drop-back (quarterback) so we threw it more often.

Daniel David (at quarterback) was more option.

“For all three, we had to block with the same kind of mentality. And we have the same expectation of working hard and executing.”

Meeks’ career averages in 454 NBA games are 9.8 points, 2.2 rebounds and 1.1 assists since he was drafted by the Milwaukee Bucks in 2009.

Porter, a restricted free agent, averaged 13.4 points, 6.4 rebounds and 1.5 steals for the Wizards last season. He shot 51.6 percent from the field, including 43.4 percent from 3-point range, and is considered a good defender.

The Brooklyn Nets and Denver Nuggets may also be meeting with Porter.

Heat, Bosh, officially part ways The Miami Heat waived forward Chris Bosh on Tuesday and announced the franchise will retire the 11-time All-Star’s

uniform number.

The move was expected, coming six weeks after Miami, Bosh and the players’ union had agreed to a resolution on the former Yellow Jackets’ contract status.

The 33-year-old Bosh missed the 2016-17 season after failing a preseason physical. Team doctors refused to clear him after Bosh was forced to miss the second half of the previous two seasons due to blood clots.

Earlier this week, the NBA notified the Heat that the remainder of the salary owed to Bosh — $52.1 million over two years — would not count against the team’s salary cap, although the standout forward will receive the money.

Juniors share spotlight in one’s emotional Daytona finale

There were a record number of cautions and wrecker trucks dispatched at Daytona during this year’s 400-mile summertime classic. Stage racing turned into crazed racing.

Given the 14 cautions, this race never really found a rhythm.

Beyond gas mashing and crashing, the race was a tale of three drivers: the top two finishers and pole winner Dale Earnhardt Jr. — one of those caught up in the bent steel jamboree.

The winner was Ricky Stenhouse Jr., who won for the second time in seven races by beating Clint Bowyer to the flag stand, backing up the idea that there’s plenty of young studs to take over for Earnhardt Jr. after he retires at the end of the season.

Still, this race was a reminder that Earnhardt Jr.’s epic journey will be hard to match in a sport that reserves legendary status for a select few.

The summer and fall are now looking to be one long fare-the-well for Earnhardt Jr. He may not have legendary statistics, but he still stirs the drink in NASCAR. The son of seven-time champ Dale Earnhardt Sr. would be the first to acknowledge his father’s personality and wheelhouse prowess were the stuff of rare occurrence.

So, Earnhardt Jr. was a little surprised that he was treated like, well, a champion in his final appearance in a points race at Daytona. Then again, it will

be hard to forget the night he passed Johnny Benson on the outside in Turn 4 to win in the summer of 2001 — the same turn where his father had been killed that February.

That victory was the beginning of a tide of affection for the son who might also be king, although as it currently stands he has yet to win a championship. Earnhardt Jr. turned out to be merely excellent behind the wheel — but a truly engaging guy outside the crucible of the cockpit.

The way he has carried himself despite the grief and pressure to measure up has earned him much applause in the various social platforms, not the least of which are grandstand cheers.

Unlike his father, who took the divide-and-conquer approach, Earnhardt Jr. has been more like “King” Richard Petty — trying to be inclusive.

“We have watched the sport and grown within the sport through his eyes — the relationship he had with his dad, and then his dad’s tragic death,” said

teammate Jimmie Johnson, the driver who has tied Earnhardt Sr. and Petty with seven championships but has never won a Most Popular Driver award. “He is a very entertaining guy, and a very open guy. I know I’ve appreciated the ride along the way and I’m sure the fans have as well.”

Earnhardt Jr. said he was taken aback by the outpouring from fans, even though he has been the sport’s most popular driver ever since when.

“I just didn’t expect all that attention all week,” he said. “My phone buzzing all day long with social media going crazy.

Everybody talking about this being my last Daytona race. I hope every weekend isn’t like this as far as that goes. The attention and the reaction from the fans makes me feel great.

Hopefully we are able to turn that around and back on them for the rest of the season and thank them for all they have done.”

After coming back from two laps down early to get back into the thick of the lead draft, Earnhardt Jr.

was collected by one of many accidents occasioned by contact. Kevin Harvick, who likely suffered from a bent fender cutting his tire, spun directly in front of the No. 88 Hendrick Motorsports Chevy.

This was not a race for those fearful of mashing the gas. Plate racing meant all cars were equal in the draft — if not drivers.

With stage points at hand and a possible trip to the postseason playoffs up for grabs for the non-winners, Daytona presented itself as an equal opportunity dance party for all.

Perhaps it was Stenhouse Jr.’s first career victory at Talladega that might have skewed some thinking. If he could do it after four years of not winning, maybe anybody could win at Daytona.

Stenhouse Jr. proved that first victory was no fluke.

He said he spent much of the race trying not to run into cars ahead of him, such was the speed of his Roush Fenway Racing Ford. But he, too, had his aggressive moments, such as when he cut down inside fellow Ford driver Ryan Blaney at the exit of Turn 4 to take the lead.

When Kyle Larson’s Chevrolet vaulted into the air on the back straight, it was Stenhouse Jr. who filled the gap. The contact of Larson’s tire to the nose of the Ford is what launched him. In overtime, Ty Dillon — who along with Daniel Suarez suggested even a rookie might win — guessed wrong in the draft and Stenhouse Jr.’s powerful Ford finally had clean air. But in

retrospect, it seemed like nobody could prevent him from backing up his first career win at Talladega as long as he survived the carnage.

“Yeah, it’s nice to do that in a short amount of time,” said Stenhouse Jr. when asked about persuading others his talent is for real by winning a second time.

“You know, not waiting another year and getting it in the same year is really important for us. I think it’s something that after you win the first one, it was awesome for a week. But then somebody else wins the next week, so it makes you want to continue to win and get back up here in the media center, get back in Victory Lane, and get everybody talking about your team. That’s what it’s all about, and all the guys work really hard, and they deserve to celebrate.”

Stenhouse Jr. predicted a short-track win is in his future, but that Roush Fenway still has work to do on the 1.5-mile tracks. If so, Stenhouse Jr. is not a title contender. But his performance was a clear sign that Jack Roush’s decision to hand over day-to-day operations to younger members of his staff is paying dividends after two winless seasons.

The victory also confirmed the Fords of Roush Yates Engines are the best on the plate tracks.

Winless is the theme song now for Bowyer, a runner-up for the second time in as many races in his Stewart-Haas Racing Ford.

“Second (stinks),” Bowyer said, “but it’s better than third, you know? We finished second two weeks

in a row, so that’s a huge confidence booster for our team, but nonetheless, the pressure cooker is turning up.”

Aside from the usual career considerations, the pressure is coming from the playoffs. At present, Bowyer is OK on points to make the top 16, but would prefer to take his season’s first victory to gain entry to the postseason instead of letting one of the other drivers in the same winless predicament do likewise.

Bowyer had enough to beat Paul Menard to the finish line, but not Stenhouse Jr. “You’re sitting there looking up there, that green-white-checker (and) coming to the green there, and you’re thinking, ‘Oh, no, somehow, some way, I’ve got to get up there and keep one of those guys that are going to be first-time winners out of this thing,’” Bowyer said. “That’s real, it’s alive, and it’s something you’re going to have to pay attention to. You hope you keep riding this wave and turn one of those seconds into a win.”

Bowyer said he was happy he didn’t crash or flip — which Larson came very close to doing. On the other hand, he has joined that cadre who are fighting a case of Stenhouse Jr. envy, which includes other winning veterans such as Joey Logano, Kyle Busch, Denny Hamlin, Matt Kenseth and Earnhardt Jr. — all looking for a playoffclinching victory.

At the beginning of the season, nobody would have thought this would be a prevailing ailment among these drivers.

Coaching takes Mill Creek’s James to Maryland

Former Mill Creek offensive lineman Micah James has landed on the coaching staff of a majorconference collegiate football team.

James, a 2009 graduate of Mill Creek, is headed into his Micah James first season as a graduate assistant for the Maryland Terrapins. He has had previous coaching stops at Arkansas State, also as a graduate assistant, and at Faulkner University, where he was the offensive line coach.

Before his coaching career, James played at Georgia Military College for two years after graduating from Mill Creek before transferring to Middle Tennessee State for his final two seasons.

And it was a connection made at MTSU that helped James land his first coaching position.

“After I graduated (college), I tried out for some NFL teams, and it didn’t work out,” James said.

“But I was working with my little brother’s eighthgrade team at the time and one day, I was just hanging out with some friends and (former MTSU offensive line coach) Coach (Glen) Elarbee told me that he was going to Arkansas State and thought I would be great for the GA spot.”

And again at ASU, James made a connection that helped him get this Maryland gig.

Walt Bell was the offensive coordinator at ASU when James was there and is now the offensive coordinator for the Terps. That prior relationship allowed James to not just move on to a school in a Power Five conference, but also to go home.

“I am originally from Landover, Md.,” James said. “We moved down to Georgia when I was in high school. To be honest, I used to come up (to Maryland) a lot when I was in high school. But since I graduated, because of

football and college and all of that, I haven’t been up here a lot. So it has been great (to be back).”

For James, knowing what he wanted to do was not always so simple.

He struggled when he was younger in trying to determine a career path, but when he looks back at those years, he looks back at who helped him grow the most. And that is what he wants to do for young players now.

“I wasn’t one of those people that always knew what I wanted to do,” James said. “I knew that I wanted to impact people.

That is what I’m good at, dealing with people.

What I looked back at was the people that impacted me outside of my family.

And that was my teachers, coaches and my youth pastor.”

Those former coaches saw that he could become a coach one day, as well.

James started off as a defensive player at Mill Creek before switching to the offensive line as a junior. Hawks offensive line coach Josh Lovelady was

the man responsible for trying to help him adapt to the position and while making that change is a tough transition, Lovelady said that James took it in stride.

“Some things just come naturally to some kids,” Lovelady said. “For Micah, he was someone that had to really study. A lot of times he would ask me questions and wear me out.

Every Friday we had tests for blocking assignments for the games. He didn’t take it for granted. He really studied. It mattered to him. I saw that he enjoyed knowing and the process of learning.”

While his former coach enjoyed having him, James took just as much from Lovelady and every other coach that he has been under.

The way that he was treated by his coaches allowed James to further fall in love with football and helped him mold a coaching style of his own.

“I’ve had a lot of great coaches,” James said. “One of the things that they all talk about is to be honest with yourself and be hon-

est with the kids. You can feel when someone is not being genuine to you. So I just try to be extremely honest with the players because that is something that I really appreciated (from my coaches). If you show the players that you care for them, they will run through a wall for you.”

Now he takes that philosophy with him to Maryland, a team that showed promise in its first season under head coach D.J. Durkin.

While the school is in a major football conference, it is not considered a bigtime program nationally.

Durkin is establishing a culture of grit, toughness and player development, and that may make it the perfect place for someone like James to connect with players.

“I think he is going be a great fit,” Lovelady said of James at Maryland.

“I think that the school matches his personality.

Maryland is a school that encompasses doing right and maybe not having the five-star recruit every year but they develop players.

Micah was a guy that had to be developed. That’s why I think Maryland is a good fit for him.”

But James is just happy to be back in his home state and feels that this new opportunity gives him a great chance to learn and expand his network, helping him inch closer to his goal of becoming a Division I offensive line coach.

He is now a far cry away from being a young man with no idea of what he wanted to do for a career.

But he still thinks back to those days when he was down and stumbled upon what he feels is his true life calling.

“I was really down and kind of lost when I didn’t make it in the NFL and those tryouts didn’t work out,” James said. “When I got out of (playing football), I was kind of just around. I was at home and just trying to figure things out. Then I helped with my little brother’s eighth-grade team, and when I got out there, I had an absolute blast. It made me realize that coaching was my destiny.”

Djokovic, Federer breeze into second round Tavani

Soccer camps hit milestone

The Sports Xchange Second-seeded Novak Djokovic and third-seeded Roger Federer didn’t need to win three sets on Tuesday to advance to the second round at Wimbledon in London.

Both stars moved on after their respective opponents retired from their matches in the second set due to injury.

Djokovic was leading 6-3, 2-0 and up 30-0 in the third game when his opponent, Martin Klizan of Slovakia, retired due to an ailing ankle.

“It was great to be back on Centre Court, the cathedral of tennis, where I have many special memories,” the 30-year-old Serb said. “It’s never nice to win like this, but I tried to focus on my game plan. I thought I served well, but didn’t do so well on my returns.”

Djovokic will face 22-yearold Czech Adam Pavlasek, who overcame dropping the first set to post a 6-7 (7), 6-1, 6-3, 6-1 victory over American Ernesto Escobedo in two hours, five minutes.

While Djokovic advanced in 40 minutes, Federer needed just three more to reach the second round of Wimbledon for the 15th consecutive year. The 35-year-old Swiss star, who has seven Wimbledon titles to his credit, was leading 6-3, 3-0 before his opponent, Alexandr Dolgopolov of the Ukraine, stopped in the second set with an ankle injury.

Kerber fends off Falconi, Vandewegh advances The Sports Xchange Top-seeded Angelique Kerber of Germany took her first step toward potentially returning to the final at Wimbledon with Tuesday’s 6-4, 6-4 victory over American Irina Falconi in London.

The opening match at Centre Court on Day 2 at Wimbledon traditionally features the women’s winner from the previous year, but Serena Williams is taking the rest of 2017 off due to her pregnancy.

Williams bested Kerber in last year’s final, but the latter took the coveted spot on Tuesday and fended off Falconi to avoid another early-round setback.

A Gwinnett County soccer tradition turned 15 this summer.

Tavani Soccer is in the midst of another summer of soccer camps for youth players, with sessions already held in Dunwoody, Duluth and Johns Creek. Two more camps will be held this month at Bunten Road Park, as well as another in Johns Creek.

The camps are a labor of love for the Tavani family. Camp director Gregg Tavani, the Academy director at Gwinnett-based Atlanta Fire United, is joined on the summer staff by his brother Michael, his father Filiberto, his mother Elaine, among others, including Mill Creek girls head coach and AFU assistant Academy director Vince Hayes.

“We love teaching players about soccer, the most popular sport in the world,” Gregg Tavani said. “We enjoy seeing players develop and improve their game. We have a camp curriculum in which we focus on a different topic every day such as dribbling, passing and shooting. Our camp is highlighted by two 3v3 and 4v4 tournaments during the week.

We have a family atmosphere in which our family has enjoyed working with soccer families over the last 15 years, and we look forward to many more.”

The first session at Bunten Park is July 10-14 and the second is July 1721. Both featured the Original Camp from 9 a.m. to noon for boys and girls ages 6 to 15, followed by the Elite Camp from noon to 1:30 p.m. for boys and girls ages 8 to 15.

From July 10-14, a Striker and Keeper Camp also will be hosted to focus on those positions from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. It is open to boys and girls ages 9 to 15. A Campioni Camp, with club-like advanced training, will be held from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. July 17-21 for boys and girls ages 9 to 15.

Both the Bunten Road locations also will have a Junior Camp from 9 to 11 a.m. It serves as an introduction to soccer for boys and girls ages 4 to 6.

The Tavani Soccer summer events conclude July 22 with the Coppa Tavani, a 3 vs. 3 and 4 vs. 4 tournament from 9 a.m. to noon. Teams and individuals are welcome to register for the tourney.

Martinez scores twice in comeback win The Sports Xchange ATLANTA — Josef Martinez scored twice, and Atlanta United overcame an early deficit to knock off the San Jose Earthquakes 4-2 on Tuesday at Bobby Dodd Stadium.

Carlos Carmona and Anton Walkes added goals for United, and Miguel Almiron, Julian Gressel and Greg Garza had assists to help Atlanta overcome an early 1-0 deficit.

Tommy Thompson and Chris Wondolowski scored for the Earthquakes, who were reduced to 10 men for the final 65 minutes.

United was without starting goalkeeper Alec Kann, who will miss six to eight weeks with a quad injury sustained Saturday in a road win over Columbus. Kann had recorded back-to-back clean sheets, but United’s shutout streak ended quickly against San Jose.

Martinez gave Atlanta its first lead just a minute later, redirecting another Garza cross past Bingham to put United up 2-1.

Wondolowski delivered

the quick answer, finishing off a high cross from Nick Lima to tie the United. But Atlanta wasn’t done.

Walkes scored the goahead goal off a header from an 81st-minute set piece, and Martinez added the clincher in the 89th minute.

Wondolowski made his 229th career start for the Earthquakes, the most in franchise history.

Mickelson set to tee it up without ‘Bones’

This week, Phil Mickelson begins life without caddie Jim “Bones” Mackay, who has been carrying his golf bag for 25 years.

Mickelson will have his brother, former Arizona State golf coach Tim Mickelson, by his side when he tees it up on Thursday in the Greenbrier Classic on the Old White TPC Course at the Greenbrier Resort in White Sulphur Springs, W.Va. “This is an opportunity for me to spend time with one of my favorite people in the world, my brother Tim,” said Mickelson, who maintains the breakup with Mackay was amicable.

“There’s nobody I like or love or respect more than Tim, and for us to have this time together the rest of the year is something I will cherish.”

Something else has to change for Lefty at the Greenbrier.

In three previous starts in the tournament, he has posted scores of 70-73—143 in 2011, 71-71—142 in 2012 and 74-68—142 in 2013, and missed the cut each time. He is an aggregate 7 over par for the six rounds.

“This course is brutally difficult,” Mickelson said after failing to reach the weekend in 2011. “It’s a very hard golf course. It’s hard to get the ball stopped.

It’s a tradition that dates to the late Sam Snead, the Greenbrier’s first golf professional emeritus, whose 82 victories are the most in PGA Tour history.

“My family, like all others who have visited the resort, loves the Greenbrier,” said Mickelson, whose primary residence is near San Diego. “I’m excited (to) be calling the Greenbrier Sporting Club home and to be part of such a wonderful community. … The Greenbrier truly is America’s resort.”

Lefty will be making his first start since missing the U.S. Open at Erin Hills last month because of

his daughter’s high school graduation.

When the Greenbrier Classic was canceled last year after historic rain and flooding swept through West Virginia on June 23, less than two weeks before the tournament was scheduled to be played, Mickelson offered to do more.

The TPC Old White Course could not be was repaired in time for the tournament, but the Greenbrier Course was much more significantly damaged. Phil Mickelson Design is handing the renovation of the course, which was designed

by Seth Raynor and opened in 1929.

Norcross’ Tardy set for third Women’s U.S. Open appearance

Bailey Tardy left her family at the beach last week, returning to Gwinnett to dig into preparations for her third Women’s U.S. Open.

“Obviously you have expectations and standards, and I think I put mine pretty high,” Tardy said.
